HISTORY IS MADE!
A miracle is often considered an extraordinary event in
human affairs; a league is an association of persons brought
together by a common interest, goal or cause. So, by
definition, the Miracle
League is an association of
people brought together to
take part in extraordinary
events in human affairs. This
rationale rings true when
speaking of the Miracle
League.

The Miracle League, a
national organization, which started in Rockdale, Georgia in
1998, is a nonprofit organization that provides individuals with
special needs the opportunity to play sports, regardless of
ability and age. The first field opened in April of 2000 and in
April of 2012 the Miracle League Field built in Northampton
Township, Pennsylvania became the latest added to the
growing number of athletic fields for special athletes around
the world.
The Miracle League of Northampton Township PA joined
the national organization in 2007 and on September 13, 2008
the Township Board of
Supervisors authorized the
construction of the Miracle
League fields to be built at
the Northampton Township
Municipal Park on Hatboro
and Bristol Roads in
Churchville. The site was
chosen due to its close
proximity to fields that were already used by the township's
youth sports leagues. It was determined that the existing park
infrastructure would support the additional activity and allow
the Board of Directors to
focus their fundraising
efforts solely on the
construction of the fields.
These fields, uniquely
designed with special
surfaces, allow athletes
with special needs the
opportunity to participate Photo by Tom Sofield
in sports without barriers. The project was met with
overwhelming support not only by the Township Supervisors
but by the community as a whole.
The first event held in December 2008, an ice cream
social, was organized to inform the special athletes and their
parents of the project. The first 'official' fundraiser, a beef-nbeer was held in January of
2009 followed by numerous
fundraising events such as
golf outings, an art auction,
headline performances and
the Invincible Dinner to
name a few. Many dropped
their “change' into cans
Photo by: Dinn Mann placed throughout the
business community, scout troops held bake sales and
concerts, and brides and grooms made donations in lieu of
giving wedding favors to their guests. In school year 2010-11
Council Rock School District named the Miracle League their
charity of choice and many students contributed by playing
dime bingo, selling used books and hand-made bracelets,
washing cars and many other creative ideas which became
successful fundraising activities. Corporations, foundations,
small businesses and individuals made generous
contributions powering the efforts of the organization to build
a baseball and a multi-purpose field.
After only two and a half years of fundraising, ground
breaking ceremonies took place on July 28, 2011. The Miracle
League Board of Directors had succeeded in raising close to
$1 million, enough money to build both fields complete with
dugouts and scoreboards! An unseasonably warm winter
followed, allowing the asphalt subsurface to be poured in
January 2012, and construction quickly progressed under the
watchful eyes of the entire community.
On Sunday April 29,
2012 with sunny skies and
smiling faces a little bit of
history was made. Hundreds, if not thousands, of
people celebrated the
grand opening of the fields;
an extraordinary event, truly

a miracle!

PARKS & RECREATION
Northampton Township Parks & Recreation
has adopted a Tobacco Free Zone Policy!
Throughout the years discussion has taken place about
prohibiting or curtailing smoking at the Township Parks.
April 2011, at the start of the spring sports season, the
Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth (CRCHY) and
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) made a
presentation to the Parks and Recreation Board asking that
Northampton Township support the initiative to promote a
tobacco free environment within the Township Parks. On
March 1, 2012, the Parks and Recreation Board adopted a
Tobacco Free Zone Policy for all Northampton Township
parks and recreational facilities. Use of tobacco products is prohibited in
designated "Tobacco Free Zones.”
• Tobacco product use in proximity of children, youth, and adults
engaging in or watching recreational activities is unhealthy and
detrimental to the health of others.
• Tobacco products once consumed in public spaces are often
discarded on the ground posing a risk of ingestion to toddlers
and causing a litter problem.
• As parents, leaders, coaches and officials, we are thought of as
role models, and the use of tobacco products around youth has
a negative effect on their lifestyle choices.
The Township of Northampton does not allow the use of tobacco products
in tobacco free zones in Township parks and recreation facilities. A tobacco
free zone is any area within 50 feet of active recreation including but not
limited to amphitheater, athletic fields, basketball courts, hockey rinks,
playgrounds and tennis courts.
We greatly appreciate your voluntary compliance with this new policy!

DORNEY & WILD WATER KINGDOM
Sunday afternoons in the 1940s found me in the Churchville
General Store pasting rationing stamps into books to be turned in
to the Rationing Board so my grandfather, Leroy K. Lennon, could
replenish his stock of rationed commodities such as gasoline,
kerosene, sugar, butter, meat and more. Many items were rationed
during WWII because they were needed to support our armed
forces.
The North and Southampton Dutch Reformed Church put the
church in Churchville; but Jesse J. Finney put the general store in
Churchville. The village was originally known as Smoketown,
probably because of the prevalence of local Dutch men smoking
their traditional long stemmed pipes. After 1816, when the church
was completed, the village gradually became known as
Churchville. Historian J.H. Battle reported that the village around
the church consisted of only twelve homes in 1871. Farmland
surrounded the little village. However, with the advent of the train
coming through in 1878, Churchville began to grow and Mr.
Finney, a retired farmer, built a general store in 1883.
By the turn of the century, Frank and Marion Heston were the
owners. Frank Heston can be seen standing on the steps of the
store in this 1908 photo. My grandfather began working for the
Hestons in 1901 when he was seventeen years old. He purchased
the business and the property in 1921. His son, Victor L. Lennon,
was proprietor from the late 40s to the early 80s. Gordon Stott was
the owner briefly, before Jin Man Kim and Eun Sil Kim bought it and
it became the Churchville Deli as seen in a recent photo.
If you want a hoagie, stop in at the Deli at 123 Bustleton Pike in
Churchville. If you want to learn more about Northampton
Township history, stop in at the Archives at the Northampton
Township Library. Township history awaits you there.

NEW SERVICE THAT HELPS NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP
POLICE FIND AND RESCUE PEOPLE WHO WANDER NOW
AVAILABLE IN THE TOWNSHIP
SafetyNet by LoJack will help Northampton Township Police protect Township residents with Autism and Alzheimer's
from the dangers of wandering.
Northampton Township Police Department and LoJack SafetyNet, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of LoJack
Corporation, today announced that a new service for people with Autism and Alzheimer's is now available in the
Township of Northampton. SafetyNet by LoJack helps caregivers provide an added layer of protection for loved ones
with cognitive conditions from the life-threatening behavior of wandering. The service also provides Police with the tools
and training to more effectively find and rescue those individuals if they wander and go missing.
The Northampton Township Police Department has been trained and
certified on the SafetyNet service, as well as equipped with search and rescue
equipment. The Police can now use the SafetyNet service to find and rescue
people at risk who go missing. SafetyNet eliminates the countless man-hours
that can be required in traditional search and rescue operations.
To bring this valuable service to Northampton Township, SafetyNet provided
a set of electronic tracking systems to the Police Department. In addition,
SafetyNet officials and industry experts provided certified training for Police
Officers on the use of its specialized equipment to find and rescue individual
clients enrolled in the service. The Search and Rescue Receivers, certified
training and ongoing support are provided at no cost to the Northampton
Township Police Department or the residents of Northampton Township.

NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK INITIATIVE
On October 12, 2010, President Obama signed the “Secure and Responsible Disposal Act of 2010”. This
provides for the disposal of controlled substances by ultimate users, long term care facilities and survivors of
decedents.
The Northampton Township Police Department, in conjunction with the Bucks County District Attorney's Office
and the Council Rock Coalition for Healthier Youth, has participated in several drug take back events in the past few
years. Each event continues to grow in the quantity of drugs that we take in.
In October 2011, the Northampton Township site took in approximately 250 lbs. of Bucks County's total 2100 lbs.
that was taken in.
The Northampton Township Police had several requests to establish a permanent location so that residents can
drop off their old prescriptions at any time. In response to the requests, the Northampton Township Police
Department installed a permanent Drug Drop Box in
the lobby of the Police Station at 50 Township Road,
Richboro, Pa. The box is available for drop offs 7 days
a week, 24 hours a day.
Please help keep our children and water systems
safe by disposing of your old and unused prescription
medications properly.
The 2012 Drug Take-back Day was held on April
28th. Bucks County, again first in the State, took in
4,396.33 lbs. Northampton Township brought in a
combination of 572 lbs. 133 lbs. came in on the 28th
and 439 lbs. were collected from the drop off container
in the Police Administration Building lobby.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CODE
ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT
As summer approaches, swimming pools will be
open. As a result, there are several safety items that must
be completed.
Door alarm batteries to the pool area should be
changed to make sure that they operate properly. In
addition, make sure that all gates, closers, and latches
function correctly. Check the entire fence
area for any needed repairs as well.
If you have any questions, feel
free to contact the Code
