2011-12 Community Report ()
Message from the
board president
On behalf of the Dallas Stars Foundation, I would like to thank you for your generous
donations and support that have allowed us to make a positive impact in the community.
As the foundation enters its 15th year, the drive to continue our mission of giving back and
remaining a fixture in North Texas is stronger than ever thanks to our reinvigorated Board
of Directors and the forward direction of the new Dallas Stars’ ownership.
Our past contributors have laid a firm foundation that has allowed our players, coaches,
and staff to transition the excellence displayed on ice to organizations and communities
who need it most. Your help continues to fortify that foundation for future donors to
support us on our philanthropic path.
In our community report you will find highlights from our fundraisers, community
involvement, and the wonderful organizations we work with. We are confident 2012-13
will lead to nothing but growth and success with the backing or our new ownership, new
ideas, and most importantly, your continued generosity.
Go Stars!

In its continuing commitment to the community, the Stars organization established the
Dallas Stars Foundation, the official charity of the Dallas Stars’ management and players.
The Dallas Stars realize that professional sports teams have a tremendous social and
economic impact upon their cities and states. A team’s athletes are called upon to provide
leadership, inspiration and support for their community. With this in mind, the Dallas
Stars Foundation was created to help maximize the Stars’ presence in the community
and to assist various non-profit organizations, particularly children’s charities, through
philanthropic grants and program implementation.

Dallas LIFE Playground BUILD Day
Dallas Stars players, Vern Fiddler and Stephane Robidas,
alongside the Pro Players Foundation, Stars Executive
Jason Farris and several volunteers visited the Dallas LIFE
Homeless Shelter on May 12 to build the playground that
the Dallas Stars Foundation helped fund through our grant
program.
The playground features a swing set, slides and picnic
tables and the Dallas Stars logo painted on the wall behind
the equipment. Kids from the shelter were happy to test out
their new playground and to have a safe, new area to play.
A ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Pro Tem Pauline
Medrano followed the build and commemorated the donation.
Dallas LIFE Playground DESiGN Day
On September 24th, former Stars players, Bob Bassen
and Jere Lehtinen visited the Dallas LIFE Homeless Shelter
and took part in a design day for their new playground that
the Dallas Stars Foundation and the Pro Players Foundation
helped fund.
Children from the shelter were asked to draw their dream
playground at the event and elements from their drawings
would then be integrated into the final design of the new
playground. Bob Bassen and Jere Lehtinen assisted the kids
with their drawings and showed them how to use a hockey
stick and how to shoot a puck.
The kids were thrilled to attend the event that featured the
Stars slap shot cage and bounce house and were surprised
to receive a set of hockey equipment from the Alumni.

Educational Programs
stick with reading
Recognizing that illiteracy remains
a persistent problem in our nation,
the Dallas Stars Foundation created
the Dallas Stars Stick with Reading
program, presented by JCPenney and
A#1 Air. The program was established
in 1998 to encourage kids to develop
the habit of reading in their free time.
Students record their extracurricular
reading over an eight-week period
for the chance to win prizes. The
classroom that read the most minutes
earned tickets to a Dallas Stars
game while the school with the most
minutes overall won the opportunity
to host the Stick with Reading rally
next year. The individual student in
each of the three age groups reading
the most minutes won the opportunity
to attend a Dallas Stars game with
their family, meet Steve Ott pre-game
and receive his autographed jersey,
and be recognized on the jumbotron
during the game.
Ott attended and spoke at the
Dallas Stars Stick with Reading rally,
held at Taylor Elementary in Plano
to kick-off this season’s program.
Steve delivered a heartfelt speech
about the importance of picking up
a book and reading. Toby Petersen
and Adam Pardy accompanied Steve
to the rally, where they spent the
afternoon talking about the benefits
and importance of reading. Half

High School Media Day
The Dallas Stars Foundation hosted its annual High
School Media Day on January 23. High School Media day
is an annual event created by the Dallas Stars Foundation
in their ongoing quest to provide support and educational
opportunities for children in the Dallas community.
60 students from DFW area high schools were invited
to attend a Dallas Stars practice, followed by a “mock”
press conference with select Dallas Stars players and
media professionals. Veteran, Dallas Stars play-byplay analyst Ralph Strangis served as the Emcee for the
event. Students were able to ask questions and pick the
brains of the professionals. Dallas Stars forwards Eric
Nystrom, Michael Ryder and Mike Ribeiro joined the
13
panel after practice and team meetings. They fielded
questions from the students, covering topics such as the
upcoming All-Star game, current injury struggles and
their favorite career moment.
Each student who attended High School Media Day
was encouraged to participate in a contest, showcasing
what they learned from the day’s events. They were
encouraged to write an article or, new to the program this
year, produce a two-minute video recapping their day at
the Dallas Stars High School Media Day. Article winner:
Dani Sureck, Plano Senior High School, 12th grade. Video
winners: Joshua Pullum and Jesse Guadiana, Nimitz

Hospital Visit with
Gage Kirkwood
Gage Kirkwood, 8, was diagnosed with strep
throat, which landed him in the hospital. While
in the hospital, it spread and something attacked
his kidneys and caused complete kidney failure.
He spent Thanksgiving and Christmas in the
hospital and found out while Vern was visiting
that he would spend New Year’s Day in the
hospital as well. Gage was undergoing dialysis
at the hospital and would have to continue those
treatments once he was released as well.
Upon Vern’s arrival, Gage’s mom, Stacy, was in
tears. Vern and Gage hit it off immediately when
Vern asked Gage and his siblings if they wanted
to see something scary. The kids were intrigued
as Vern popped out his false teeth. Gage asked
Vern if he wears the fake teeth to play, how many
teeth he’s missing and how he lost them.
Vern gave Gage a goodie bag that included a
Fiddler jersey and other Stars items, and he even
invited the Kirkwood family out to an upcoming
game. Vern visited with Gage and his family for
an hour and the family was extremely grateful
for his visit.

Children’s Medical Center Hospital Visits
When it comes to putting a smile on a child’s face the
Dallas Stars know exactly what to do on and off the ice. The
entire team visited the patients at the Children’s Medical
Center Dallas on December 6th. The visit to the Children’s
Medical Center is an annual tradition for the Dallas Stars
and one that the team always looks forward to.
The team split up into several groups to visit different
playrooms in the hospital. The players passed out
autographed player cards and participated in several
different activities including coloring, video games, Guess
Who and Foosball.
Players also made visits to individual patient rooms for
those that weren’t well enough to make it to the playrooms.
14
Several of the players donned gloves, masks and hospital
robes in order to visit the patients in restricted rooms,
making sure no one was left out. The patients were so happy
to see the Dallas Stars that one patient asked for a hug from
each player that came to visit him.
Forward Vernon Fiddler made a young boy’s day when he
took the jersey off his back and gave it to the patient. Fiddler
also brought the boy and his family to a Dallas Stars game
where they met the entire team after the game.
It’s moments like this that make the visit to the Children’s
Medical Center a favorite for both the Dallas Stars, the patients
and their families. Even when they aren’t scoring goals, the
Dallas Stars are finding a way to make people smile.
Military Night
The Dallas Stars were proud
to participate in honoring the
military on March 10th. The
Dallas Stars players utilized
custom camouflage-themed tape
on their sticks during warm-ups
of the home game vs. Anaheim,
in honor of the United States
military.
The sticks were autographed
by Stars players and auctioned off
by the Dallas Stars Foundation.
The $5,200 raised benefited the
USO United Through Reading
Program and other military
children’s programs.

The Dr Pepper StarCenters asked elementary school students to submit essays as to why their school should win a
visit from a Dallas Stars player. Two fifth graders from Andrews Elementary in Plano, Jennifer Xia and Shachi Patel, were
deemed the winners, so on the afternoon of March 19th, Stars defenseman Trevor Daley paid them a visit.
After presenting Xia and Patel with a gift bag featuring various Stars autographed items, Daley along with StarCenter
personnel worked with the two winners and several other students, showing them stick handling techniques and even
taking shots with a street hockey ball at one of their classmates who had donned some goalie gear.
Light the Night Walk
Once again this season, the Dallas Stars Front Office employees
pledged their time for the 2011“Light the Night Walk.” All front office
employees were encouraged to register and participate in the walk
which benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk is the nation’s night to pay tribute and bring hope to those
who are battling cancer. Walks take place in communities throughout the United States and Canada, typically in the fall.
On these special nights, thousands of participants carry illuminated balloons and raise funds for vital, lifesaving research
and patient services.
On October 22nd, the Stars Front Office team participated in Light the Night Walk in downtown Dallas. Employees
raised over $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. The
Dallas Stars brought in further revenue for LLS in the form of grants from the Dallas Stars Foundation and the NHL. All
of the Dallas Stars efforts combined to raise a grand total of over $27,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The
Light the Night walk was once again a huge success and we look forward to another successful event in 2012.

At the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation
for a fundraising event, Sheldon Souray and
Toby Petersen generously donated the
unique opportunity for 4 guests to have
dinner with themselves and their significant
others. Both athletes are supporters of
JDRF’s mission to find a cure for Type 1
Diabetes, which Toby was diagnosed with at
the young age of 5. This item accompanied
with Stars ticket packages and autographed
memorabilia totaled close to $4,000 in auction
items donated for the cause.
Teammates For Kids
Dallas Stars players and coaches
participate in donating to the
Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids
Foundation. The Foundation focuses
on contributing financial resources
to non-profit organizations that benefit children’s health, education,
and inner city services. 100 percent of the money donated goes to
children’s charities!
Teammates contribute a predetermined sum of money based
on selected categories for their in-game performances. A hockey
player, for example, could pledge to contribute $1,000 for every goal
he scores in a season, or a goalie could pledge to donate $500 for
every shutout. The Teammates for Kids Foundation then TRIPLES
all donations made by professional athletes!

“Movember,” which began about 12 years ago in
Australia, is designed to help bring awareness to prostate
cancer and other men’s diseases. By growing moustaches
in November, some Stars players helped raise funds and
call attention to how prostate cancer can be prevented.
The movement has caught on in recent years in North
America, especially in Canada. Stars Defenseman Mark
Fistric headed up the team’s efforts, and the rest of the
team gladly signed on to take part! Through Mark’s and the
Stars in the community
rest of the team’s fundraising pages, more than $13,600
was raised by the Dallas Stars for the cause, which was the
second most of all NHL teams that participated.
Mark Fistric and his wife Geena attended the Dallas
Moustache’s event on November 1st to kickoff Movember.
Drink and merchandise sales at the social event were
donated back to the cause. Dallas Moustache is a local
initiative that supports Movember and their goal of bringing
awareness and funding to men’s cancers.
TOBY Petersen | Michael Young
Charity Bowling Tournament
This season Dallas Stars Forward Toby Petersen helped fellow DFW
athlete, Texas Rangers, Michael Young with the 1st Annual Michael Young

benefited Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer. Petersen participated with other athletes,
sports personalities and entertainers.

Hockey Fights Cancer
The Dallas Stars held their annual Hockey Fights Cancer
night on October 13th. The Stars recognized and raised
money for several charitable organizations for their efforts
in cancer research - Pancreatic Cancer Action Network,
Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers, Susan G. Komen
for the Cure, and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Cancer patients from these organizations got the
opportunity to participate in some fun behind the scenes
activities such as: serving as the Dr Pepper Stick Kid,
sitting in the penalty boxes during warm-ups, and sitting
on the player bench post-game.
The Dallas Stars Foundation raised close to $10,000
through a silent auction consisting of lavender wrapped
sticks the team used during warm-ups, ticket sales, and
19
collections at the door by the Dallas Stars Wives and
girlfriends.
Ralph Strangis and Daryl Reaugh auctioned off their
Hockey Fights Cancer ties from years past, and the winners
were invited to come up to the booth to watch the postgame show, and to the winners’ surprise, Ralph and Razor
put them on the show.
Stars players wore Hockey Fights cancer decals on
their helmets all month. Coaches, broadcasters and front
office execs donned lavender Hockey Fights Cancer ties.
All proceeds from Hockey Fights Cancer fundraising were
divided evenly between the four cancer organizations that
attended this special night.

Love for Lokomotiv/Skrastins Donation
On September 7, 2011, 44 lives were lost in the worst tragedy in professional hockey history. A plane carrying crew
members, hockey personnel, coaches and players of the Russian Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team went down.
In a united effort to show support for the grieving families, hockey wives and girlfriends from around the world created
Love for Lokomotiv in hopes to raise money for their friends.
The Dallas Stars wives and girlfriends honored the victims of the Lokomotiv hockey team by selling remembrance
bracelets. All funds raised directly benefited the families of the Lokomotiv team. The bracelets were sold all season at the
Dallas Stars Foundation table. The Dallas Stars raised over $7,000 for the families of the Lokomotiv team and the Dallas
Stars Foundation donated an additional $1,000.
The tragedy struck particularly close to home for the Dallas Stars and their fans as one of their own, former defenseman
Karlis Skrastins, died in the accident. Skrastins left behind his wife Zane and their three daughters. The Dallas Stars
honored Skrastins in a pre-game ceremony on March 24th and set up a trust fund for the three girls, of which the Dallas
Stars players pooled together a significant donation.

and Tara Storch, whose daughter Taylor, passed away in a skiing accident at the age of 13. Her parents quickly made the

such as sticks, pucks, jerseys, and
pennants. The bags were in very high
demand, selling out at each game!
This year’s Green Bag Sale raised
close to $6,000 for the Foundation!
Hall of Fame
Dallas Stars Hockey Hall of Fame
Inductees Joe Nieuwendyk and Ed
Belfour generously signed Hall of
Fame pucks and Dallas Stars jerseys,
with all proceeds from the sale of
these items benefitting the Dallas
Stars Foundation. Fans were invited
to own a piece of hockey history
by purchasing the one-of-a-kind
pucks and jerseys at the Dallas
Stars Foundation table and online
throughout the season. Thanks
to Joe’s generosity, a total of
$3,400 was raised for the
Foundation.
St. Patty’s Day Jerseys
For the first time in team history,
the Dallas Stars wore special St.
Patrick’s Day jerseys during warmups before the game on March
16th. Each jersey had a unique Irish
nickname for the player and was
the only jersey produced of its kind.
Some of the names included: #14
McChubbs (Jamie Benn), #32 O’Lehts
(Kari Lehtonen) and #28 McCrush’Em
(Mark Fistric). Fans were able to bid
for the jerseys on an online auction.
The auction raised over $15,000 for
the Dallas Stars Foundation.

Announcements
For a $50 donation, Stars fans were
able to welcome, congratulate or
wish a close friend a Happy Birthday
on the Stars jumbotron. The custom
message appeared on the jumbotron
during the game, the message
was announced in the arena, and
a goodie bag was delivered to the
fans’ seats. All proceeds from these
announcements raised $3,800 for the
Dallas Stars Foundation.
wives holiday tree raffle
wives holiday tree raffle
The wives and girlfriends of the
Dallas Stars players decorated mini
Christmas trees representing each
of the players. Each tree included
autographed memorabilia, gift
cards, and favorite items of each
player. The Dallas Stars Foundation
sold raffle tickets for a three game
period in December. Fans would
purchase tickets and drop them in a
bucket under the tree they wanted
to win. The Holiday Tree raffled
raised $10,000 for the Dallas Stars
Foundation.
