2 DESCRIPTION
Wavetrend is a RFID tag system that allows you to protect your computer
from unauthorized access whenever you leave its immediate vicinity. This is
achieved with three easy to install components:
1. The Wavetrend RFID tag reader attached to a serial port on your
computer
2. The Wavetrend application software
3. A Wavetrend identification tag
The identification tag transmits on a regular basis an identification message to
the reader, which then communicates this message via the serial port to the
application software. The application software then decodes this message to
determine if it came from a valid, configured tag. Only if the message is valid
and from a configured tag, does the application software allow access to the
computer. If the application software does not receive any message from a
valid tag within a pre-configured time period, it will lock the computer and
disallow any access. The computer will only be unlocked again once a valid
tag message is received or if the user enters a valid access code.
The messages sent out by the tag are never identical as they are subjected to
a proprietary aging algorithm and thus ensure a high level of security.
When the computer is locked, a screensaver is activated so that the content of
the screen is hidden from inquisitive eyes. The screensaver provides
complete protection from operations such as [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Del] and even
operations such as powering down and up will have no neutralizing effect.
If for any reason the tag is lost or malfunctions, the Wavetrend application
software will allow you to override it via a configured password.

3 INSTALLATION
Installing the Wavetrend software is a simple six-step process and the
installation software will guide you along the way.
Before you install the Wavetrend system, you should however decide whether
you want an Administrator or User level installation. The differences between
the options are:
3.1
USER LEVEL INSTALLATION
If you will be using the Wavetrend system in a single user environment with
only one RFID tag, it is recommended that you use this option as it allows you
to configure one access password to give you access to all system functions.
The following features are however not available in this configuration:
; Location tagging
; Password usage counter lock
; Alternate password for general use
3.2
ADMINISTRATOR LEVEL INSTALLATION
If you will be using the Wavetrend system in a multiple user environment with
each user allocated a tag, it is recommended that you install the Wavetrend
system using this option.
Only the administrator of the system will have the rights to configure or alter
system critical configuration options such as communication port, data
logging, adding or removing user access privileges and shutting down the
Wavetrend system.
Users will be assigned an additional password that allow them access to only
those components that directly affect their usage of the system i.e.
screensaver logo, timeouts, Quick-Lock hot keys etc.
Using this installation option also allows the administrator to configure a
location tag, and to set password usage counters.
Please note that in an Administrator level installation, the administrator
password is required to suspend or close the application, whereas the user
password will suffice for all system operations, in the User level installation.

LICENSE AGREEMENT
The first screen displayed during the installation process is the license
agreement (Figure 2).
For the installation process to continue, it is necessary for you to accept the
license agreement. Please ensure that you read this License agreement
carefully before you proceed. When you indicate your acceptance of the
agreement, by selecting the ‘I accept the above License Agreement’ button,
you will automatically be taken to step 1 of the six-step installation process.
Should you decide not to accept the agreement, you will be presented with the
screen shown in Figure 3, where you can then decide to terminate the
installation process.
If at any time during the installation you want to terminate the installation,
select the ‘Cancel’ button. You will be presented with the screen shown in

STEP 1: INSTALLATION OPTIONS
The first step in the installation process requires you to select the type of
installation you require.
You are given two options, User level and
Administration level. See paragraph 3.1 and paragraph 3.2 earlier in this
document for a detailed description or the differences.
It is important to remember that none of the installation options are binding nor
do they lock you into a certain set of choices. It is simple to change any of the
options at any time once the Wavetrend application is installed and running.
Make your selection of the type of installation you want by clicking on the
option of your choice and then click on the next button to continue to step two
of the installation process.
Note that if you select the User installation option, you will skip step 3 of the
installation process, as the user installation does not require a user password.

STEP 2: ADMINISTRATOR SETUP
In step two you need to register the Administrator password. It is important
that you select a password that is not obvious and easy to guess. Do not use
obvious passwords such as birth dates of someone close to you or a name of
a friend, relative or a loved one.
NOTE: The administrator password allows you to bypass the Wavetrend
security system or to change any of the configuration options at any time, and
thus the security of the system depends on the complexity of the password
you decide to register.
It is also advisable to change the password often so that the chance of the
security being compromised is reduced.
The password you chose must be at least 5 characters in length and may be
up to 20 characters in length and may contain any character that you can type
on the keyboard.
It is recommended to choose a password that consists of alphabetic, numeric
and symbol characters. See Table 1 for some samples of possible
passwords.

You need to enter your chosen password twice to ensure that the intention
and spelling you require is confirmed. If the confirmation password does not
match the original password, you will see the message shown in Figure 6
displayed. The password entry fields are cleared and you need to re-enter
them again.

When you have entered your chosen password and confirmed it and all the
requirements have been met, the ‘NEXT’ button will be enabled and you can
proceed to the next step.
4.4
STEP 3: USER SETUP
If you have selected the User Level Installation, this step is not required as
only one access password is provided for, for all system functions. Please
proceed directly to STEP 4.
In step 3 you need to register the user password. This is the password that
the general users of the system may use if they have lost their tag to gain
access to bypass the Wavetrend security system.
You have to option of allowing use of this password and to set parameters to
its use. The additional features are configured in the actual Wavetrend
application. Please see section 5.4.2 later in this User Guide.
The same rules as set out in section 4.3 apply when configuring the User
password.
Once you have selected and entered the User password correctly, the ‘Next’
button will be activated and you can proceed to Step 4 of the installation
process.

STEP 4: HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
In this step you will configure the Wavetrend reader for use by the system. All
that is required is to plug the reader into an available serial port and to
configure the port number in the system. Full instructions are given on screen
in a simple 5 Step process.
When you click on the ‘Test’ button, the screen shown in Figure 10 will be
displayed giving you and indication of the reader detection progress. Typically
the Reader Test takes 10 seconds to complete.
If the Reader Test was unsuccessful, you will see a screen as shown in Figure
11 displayed. You then have to ensure that the reader is plugged in correctly
and that the selected port was configured correctly. Then you can retry the
test. If the test keeps failing, please refer to your hardware vendor to ensure
that your hardware and serial port are functioning correctly. To abort the
installation, select the ‘Cancel’ button.

STEP 5: PRIMARY USER CONFIGURATION
In this step you will assign the primary user tag for use by the Wavetrend
system.
Before you proceed please check the Identity number of your tag(s). The tag
ID is a two-part number that is printed on the label attached to the tag. When
shown on screen all prefix zeros are removed.
Once you have identified the tag number that you want to assign to the
primary user you can proceed with the configuration.
All tags that are detected by the system are shown in the ‘Detected Tags’ list
box. Please ensure that the tag you wish to assign is displayed here. If for
some reason you do not find it in the list, place the tag closer to the reader
and go back to Step 4 of the installation process and redo the reader test.
Enter a user name for the primary user in the ‘User Name’ entry box. This
user name will be listed in the log to allow easier identification and association
of a tag with its assigned user. The system will allow you to enter any name
up to a maximum length of 40 characters. You may use any characters that
are available on the keyboard.
Now you must assign the tag by selecting it from the list box and clicking on
the ‘Assign tag to User’ button. You may also double-click the tag ID in the list
box to assign it to the user.
Once you have assigned the tag ID and have supplied a user name, the ‘Next’
button will be enabled and you may proceed to the final step of the
installation.

STEP 6: SYSTEM SETTINGS
The final step of the installation process allows you to configure the initial
system settings.
The first setting is the ‘Screen Saver Delay Time’.
This setting determines how much time must elapse from when a tag is last
detected by the Wavetrend RFID system up to when the screen saver must
activate and lock the system.
The following delay times are allowed:
10 Seconds, 20 Seconds, 30 Seconds, 1 Minute, 2 Minutes, 3 Minutes, 4
Minutes and 5 Minutes.
It is recommended that you initially select the default delay time of 30
Seconds and once you have familiarized yourself with the system modify this
value in the Wavetrend application to suit your needs.
Next you can configure the Data Logging.
Again we recommend that you accept the default settings of ‘Perform Data
Logging’ enabled and ‘Delete Logs at Month End’ enabled until you have fully
familiarized yourself with the system and the change the settings in the
Wavetrend application.
The Wavetrend system is supplied with an extensive logging system that will
automatically log all actions performed in the Wavetrend application for
analysis and auditing at a later stage. Any access or configuration changes
will be reflected in the logs so it is easy to determine if there is any tampering
with the system. A full history of usage is also given so one can easily see
who had access to the computer and at which times and which tags were
allowed access.
If you feel you do no require a log to be kept you may disable to logging
system.
If you enable the ‘Delete Logs at Month End’ option, all logs are kept for a
period of 30 days. The log files older than a month will then be automatically
deleted from the system to prevent unnecessary data accumulation.
Once you have set the System settings to your requirements, select the ‘Next’
button to finalize the installation.

FINALLY: CONFIRM OPTIONS
A screen as shown in Figure 15 is displayed listing the installation options as
you have configured them during steps 1 to 6 of the installation process.
Please check them carefully and ensure that the displayed options are what
you require. If any option needs to be changed, use the ‘Back’ and ‘Next’
buttons to navigate to the relevant settings screen and change it as
necessary.
Once you are happy with all the Installation Options, select the ‘Accept
settings and continue Installation’ button.
All required files will then be copied to your computers hard drive and the
configuration will be saved. When all the files have been copied you will see
the screen shown in Figure 16 displayed.
Acknowledge the screen by selecting the ‘OK’ button. The screen shown in
Figure 17 will then be displayed to indicate that the Wavetrend Security
Application will now automatically start up to protect your computer.

5 USING THE WAVETREND SYSTEM
5.1
STARTING THE WAVETREND SYSTEM
The Wavetrend security application will automatically be started whenever the
computer is powered up and the operating system has initialised. An
indication is given to the user that the Wavetrend application has fired up by
displaying the Wavetrend splash screen as shown in Figure 18. This screen
will only be shown at initial power up of the system and will display for a
period of approximately 2 seconds.
If you have closed down the Wavetrend application for some reason (Only the
system administrator can do this), you can restart Wavetrend by clicking on
the Wavetrend application icon under the Programs section in the Start Menu.

WAVETREND IN OPERATION
When Wavetrend is in operation the Wavetrend icon as shown in Figure 19
will be shown on the taskbar on the bottom right edge of your screen. The
icon may be shown in different colours to indicate the current state of the
system.
•
Green: Normal operation and that the Wavetrend system is active.
•
Grey: The Wavetrend system has been suspended. You can reactivate Wavetrend from the taskbar menu.
•
Red:
Wavetrend is disabled or bypassed. When in this state,
Wavetrend will revert to normal operation once it detects a valid tag in
its environment.
Figure 19: Taskbar Icon
You can also get an indication of the current state of Wavetrend by resting the
mouse pointer on the Wavetrend taskbar icon. After a short while a popup will
appear indicating the current state.

5.3
VIEWING SYSTEM STATUS
To get an indication of system status, you may display the system status
monitor at any time. Activate the Wavetrend taskbar menu and select the
‘Show Status’ option. A screen as shown in Figure 21 will then appear on the
lower right hand side of your screen. Here it is simple to see the current
Wavetrend system activity.
The status monitor displays the amount of time remaining before the
Wavetrend system will lock the computer by activating the screensaver. The
time is given in ‘Minutes: Seconds’ format next to the ‘Time Remaining’ item.
The amount of time elapsed since the last time a configured User tag or a
configured Location tag was detected is also shown in the bar displays.
Should any bar reach the right hand side, the system will activate the screen
saver.
The next line gives an indication of reader activity. The value is an indication
of how much data is processed by the Wavetrend system each second. The
more tags you have in the environment, the higher this value will be. If you
see a value of 0 (ZERO) it means that the reader is not picking up any tags in
the environment and you need to either reposition the reader or the tag.
Figure 21: Status Monitor
Two LED indicators are also shown. The top LED gives an indication of
reader activity. Whenever it is shown in green it indicated valid data being
received by the reader and thus indicates that there are tags in the
environment. The lower LED indicated detection of a valid, registered tag.
Whenever a tag that is registered with the system is detected it will indicate
9HUVLRQ
3DJH
8VHU*XLGH
green, and when a tag is detected that is not registered with the system is
detected or no tag is detected, it indicates red.
If you have an active Internet connection you may click on the Wavetrend logo
and you will be taken directly to the Wavetrend support website.
Clicking on the ‘Hide’ button will close and hide the Status Monitor display.
You may drag the display to any location on the screen and also have the
system remember the last display position. Refer to section 5.4.8 later in this
document.
5.4
CONFIGURING THE WAVETREND SYSTEM
To alter any system settings or to add, remove or modify users you need to go
to the properties system. Activate the Wavetrend taskbar menu and select
the ‘Properties’ option.
You will then be prompted to supply the access password in a popup screen
as shown in Figure 22. You may supply either the Administrator or the User
password. The options and settings you may access are determined by the
password you supply.
Figure 22: Password Entry
If you enter a password that is not configured in the system, you will get an
indication of this as shown in Figure 23. REMEMBER: Passwords are case
sensitive.
Figure 23: Invalid Password Entered
Once you enter a password that is recognized by the system, the Wavetrend
properties screen is displayed. At the top of the screen you will have a tabbar with the options that you may change. The tab-bar depends on which
password was entered.

Environment Settings
If you entered the properties section using the Administrator password all
options shown in Figure 26 will be available.
If you entered here by using the User password, you will only have the ‘User
Settings’ options.
On this screen you can configure the screensaver delay time, enable and
configure location tags and configure the functionality of the function keys
during the boot process (Windows 95/98/98SE only).
The screen saver delay time determines how much time must elapse from
when a registered tag was last detected by the Wavetrend system up to when
the screen saver must activate and lock the system.
The times given in Table 3 are permitted.

Table 3: Permitted Delay Times
To enable or disable location tagging simply check or uncheck the ‘Enable
Location Tagging’ checkbox.
A location tag is an additional tag that must be present in the environment for
the system to unlock and allow access. One can thus hide an additional tag in
the office to ensure that the computer may only be accessed in the vicinity of
the location tag. If the computer is removed from the vicinity of the location
9HUVLRQ
3DJH
8VHU*XLGH
tag it will remain locked even if a configured user tag is present. An
alternative use is to give the location tag to the chief accountant or any other
person of authority. Access to the computer can then only be gained if and
only if both the user and the person of authority are present.
Assign a tag by either double clicking on the required tag ID in the list shown
or by clicking on the required tag and then clicking on the ‘Assign Tag ID’
button.
Should the required tag ID not be shown in the list box, you need to reposition
the reader or place the tag into closer proximity of the tag reader.
Figure 26: Environment Settings Configuration Screen
If you have a location tag configured, the Location Tag bar will be active in the
Status monitor as shown in Figure 27. From the Status Monitor it is also easy
to determine whether it is the location tag or the user tag that is not being
detected by looking at which bar is timing out.

The ‘F-Keys’
If you are running Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or 98SE you may enable or
disable the Function keys during the boot process. The function keys allow
you to display a Startup menu or to boot the system in safe mode. To disable
these options you need to disable the ‘F-Keys’. Ensure that the checkbox is
not checked to disable the boot keys.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Enabling the ‘F-Keys’ allows a user to gain access to
your system during the boot process, and it is thus recommended that the ‘FKeys’ are disabled at all times.
The ‘F’-Key option is not available under Windows NT or Windows 2000.

5.4.2
Configuring Passwords
Select the ‘Passwords’ tab at the top of the Properties screen. The screen
displayed depends on the supplied password.
If you entered the
Administrator password you will be shown the screen shown in Figure 29
below.
If you entered the User Password you will only be permitted to modify the
User password.
Use this screen to modify the configured passwords at any time.
Figure 29: Password Configuration Screen
As the system administrator you may also set additional options for the user.
These are:
Enable User Password access – If this option is checked the user may use
the password to gain access to the system when he does not have the tag
present. If the option is not checked, the user can only gain access to the
system by presenting his tag. This is one method of ensuring that the user
has the tag with him at all times.
Enable Counter Lock – Check this option if you want to limit the number of
times the user may use the password to gain access to the system without his
tag. If this option is not checked there is no limit to the number of times the
user may use the password to gain access to the system.
Specify the number of times the user may use his password under the
‘Password usage count before lock’ option.
9HUVLRQ
3DJH
8VHU*XLGH
The ‘Current value of password counter’ gives you an indication of how many
times the user may still use his password before his password will be locked
out of the system. When this value reaches zero (0) he may no longer use his
password to gain access and only his tag will be recognized.
The password counter can be automatically reset by presenting the Primary
tag to the system by checking the ‘Automatically reset’ option. This option will
ensure that presenting the primary tag to the system will reset the password
usage counter. If this option is not checked the Administrator will need to
reset the counter manually by pressing the ‘Reset’ button.

Additional System Settings
This screen allows you to configure miscellaneous system settings and to
configure the hotkey required to activate Quick Lock.
Quick Lock is an option that is available to the user at all times so that he can
activate the screensaver whenever he requires it. Typical use would be
where the user has sensitive data on screen and someone who may not have
access to the information walks in. All that is required is for the user to press
the Quick Lock key combination and the screensaver will immediately activate
even though the tag is still present. The system will remain in Quick Lock until
the user enters his password or he leaves the vicinity of the reader with his
tag for a period exceeding the time period configured in the ‘Time to elapse
before Quick Lock…” option at the bottom of the screen shown in Figure 38.
If the user leaves the vicinity of the reader with his tag for a period exceeding
the configured time, the system will automatically revert to normal operational
mode and unlock the system when it next sees a configured tag.
As supplying the user password can only disable Quick Lock, this mode is
indicated by a message on the screensaver screen. The user however has
the option of deciding if he wants this message to be displayed, by checking
the ‘Show Quick Lock message…’ check box.
Figure 38: Additional Settings Screen
When the screensaver is displayed the user has the option of also displaying
a clock. To enable the clock display, check the ‘Display clock…’ option.

The system monitor screen may be dragged to a different location onscreen.
To have the system remember the last position that the system monitor was
displayed at, check the ‘Remember last position…’ check box. This will
ensure that the system monitor window will always appear at the position you
dragged it.
If you want to have the system remember the last state of the status monitor
window, i.e. visible or not visible, check the ‘Remember last state…’ option. If
the status monitor was visible/not visible when you shut down the system, it
will be automatically be visible/not visible the next time you start up the
system.
Checking the ‘Allow user to suspend…’ option, will allow the user to suspend
the system from the Wavetrend taskbar menu. It is recommended that this
option remain unchecked for most installations. Suspending the Wavetrend
system makes the serial port available for other uses but compromises the
security of the system, as it will now not be able to lock when required.

7 NOTES ON INSTALLATION
Effects of Mechanical shielding
The Wavetrend tag uses low power Radio Frequency transmissions to
communicate with the Wavetrend reader plugged into your computer. The
environment can adversely effect these transmissions, especially the
presence of metal. The result would be loss of range on your Wavetrend
system. Repositioning your computer can rectify this situation. Should this
approach not rectify the situation, an extension cable is included in the
Wavetrend kit, which extends the serial port connector so the reader can be
sited away from any screening effects.

8 ADDING ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE SECURITY
Setting Your Boot Sequence
Changing the boot sequence is an advanced option modifying your
BIOS/CMOS settings and should only be undertaken by advanced PC users.
If the boot sequence is set so that the system first boots from your primary
hard disk, this will ensure that the Wavetrend software will be running first,
preventing booting from the floppy drive.
IMPORTANT: This sequence might not apply to your system, if your system is
different and you cannot find the boot sequence consult your PC users
manual or contact your supplier.
Switch off the system (Shut Down)
Switch the system on (Power Up)
Press the delete button “Del” to go to “CMOS Setup
(Some systems use “F1”, some use “F2”, some use “Ctrl-Esc”)
Choose “BIOS Features Setup”
Choose “Boot Sequence” e.g. A, C, SCSI
Change the sequence so that your primary boot device boots first or that your
primary boot device is your only boot device.
Go to “Save Settings And Exit”
The system will now restart, booting from your hard disk first. Please be
aware that any future recovery of your machine, it will not boot from floppy,
until you go back into your BIOS/CMOS settings and restore your boot
sequence to floppy first. For additional security you should password protect
your CMOS settings, this password should be kept in a safe place if it is lost it
may be difficult or impossible to restore your PC.
