THE TORCH
MANSFIELD CHRISTIAN SECONDARY
“From the Principal’s Desk”
It’s here…the season when we wait with
expectation for the coming of Christ. In its simplest
form, it’s a season of reflection and waiting in awe at
the coming of the newborn King. In its most
complicated form, the Christmas season can be
turned into a frenzy of shopping, activities, and
events that could leave you exhausted. Regardless of
how you choose to spend this Christmas season,
I pray you will find quiet time to talk with God. Even
a few minutes of quiet every day will help with stress
relief. Focus your mind on Him, recognize His
presence, and obey what He tells you.
“DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN
EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION
WITH THANKSGIVING LET YOUR REQUEST BE
MADE KNOWN TO GOD. AND THE PEACE OF GOD,
WHICH SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year!
GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN
CHRIST JESUS.”
-Philippians 4:6-7

THE ROAD TO ENLISTMENT
I began to look into the Air National Guard in October
of this year, and God started to tug at my heart.
Throughout the past two months I have met many people
who had a military background, and each one of them
encouraged me during my time of decision.
A four year bachelor’s degree is often times the draw for
most Airmen to the Air National Guard. The Guard
provides a monthly allowance for textbooks, food,
clothing and housing. In addition, I will receive top of the
line training for a career in the military as an Airman.
My calling is such – “I, Spencer Favers, have chosen to
follow the call of both my nation and my Lord, to take up
arms and defend those that I love.”

IMAGE
Each year WMFD TV and WMFD.com invite area choirs to
perform their holiday music programs for us to share with you.
This year Image was invited to record their Christmas music at
WMFD’s studio, and our students did a fabulous job! You can
hear their music on WMFD’s website, and these performances
will also air on WMFD TV starting Christmas Eve and all day on
Christmas Day! What an exciting opportunity!
Congratulations to our Elementary Choir, Middle School Choir, and Image students on a very successful and
worshipful Christmas concert on December 10th! A few highlights include singing the Casting Crowns
moving rendition of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" with
our Image band, accompanist, combined choirs of 70 students,
and soloist freshmen Caleb Hignite. Our capable senior, Lilly
Buckley, conducted Image as they sang Pentatonix's "Silent
Night." Sheryl Brown and the Middle School Choir sang a gospel
version of “Jesus, What a Wonderful Child” complete with
choreography and cool shades! Our Elementary Choir sang three
beautiful
numbers with
many soloists as well. We even had some 1st grade students
recite Luke 2:1-20...so adorable and impressive! A huge
thank you goes out to our choir students, amazing parents,
supportive faculty, staff, and administration, and the Lord
Jesus Christ for giving us a reason to celebrate! We hope to
see you at our multicultural Fine Arts Gala on March 10,
2016! ~ Heidi Zentz

REAL LIFE CADAVER
On December 4th, the Anatomy class visited North
Central State to acquaint our students with a
cadaver. We reviewed and discussed the eleven
systems of the body and located the exposed main
organs and muscular systems. During this field trip
our students got an overview of a human cadaver
and the regions of the body that had been dissected.
This was an amazing “real life” experience that
vividly demonstrated God’s creative design of
humanity in His own image. This experience made
Acts 17:27 come alive; "God did this", especially
designing and engineering human anatomy so that
man would seek His face.
The connection of all of the atoms, molecules, cells,
tissue and systems in the human body is aweinspiring in its complexity. Yet our anatomy
displays sin’s decaying influence in our body’s
frailty through age, disease and every day anomalies.
The purpose of this visit was to convey the
magnanimous creation that is our framework
through introducing ourselves to the cadaver.
We plan to make a second visit in March to study
specific systems (the muscular system, the
cardiovascular system and the general senses) of
the human body. We are looking forward to
assessing our students’ ability to learn and to
process information about these systems in our
third visit in mid-April.

CHESS CLUB
Mansfield Christian’s Chess Club meets every first
and third Friday of each month. We currently have 10-15
people in attendance. We have some instructional time going
over aspects of the game but most of the time we just play
each other. A few times during the year we have pizza and
drinks while we play! It is a time of fun and fellowship. We
are looking forward to putting on a chess tournament school-wide.

Press Box Project
Mansfield Christian Soccer fans can thank senior
Croix Sweval for the school’s new press box.
Sweval was in need of one more Boy Scout Merit
Badge to become an Eagle and decided to help the
school in the process. He had planned to build a
kick wall for the soccer teams. However, since the
new practice field wasn’t ready, he opted for
constructing the press box. Croix states, “I was
interested in the design and construction process.
I have been involved in Scouts since the first grade,
and I became a Boy Scout when I was 11 years old.”
Sweval belongs to Troop 152 whose charter is
Resurrection Parish in Lexington. He has 31 merit
badges and needed one more to earn the Eagle.
According to Croix, “I sent out over 90 letters with a goal to raise $3,000 with the school providing the
remaining funds. I ended up raising approximately $5,500. The project has been a good way for me to give
back to not only the community but also to the school. MCS treated me well, and they deserved something
nice back. It is a nice way to stand out and make a lasting impact.” Upon graduation he plans to attend college
for pre-med.

7th & 8th grade Christmas Service Project
What’s the best way to spread
Christmas cheer? Buddy the Elf
would say, “Singing loud for all to
hear!” On Monday, Dec. 14th over 80
Mansfield Christian School Junior
High students and chaperones spent
the day at Crossroads Community
Church lending their time and hard
work to spread a little Christmas
cheer. They helped make Christmas a
little merrier for over 400 families in
Richland County by playing a part in
the organization of the Adopt-A-Child
project. Area businesses, non-profit
organizations, and individual families
provided over $100,000 in gifts and
needed items for over 950 children in
this grand scale community outreach.
MCS students tirelessly transported,
sorted, and packaged these gifts to play a part in sharing Jesus with these families. The day ended in Bible
reading and prayer over each child’s name. In the end, the MCS students learned how to show love to
people they haven’t even met, enjoyed time together, and yes….there may have been a little singing as well!

North American Project
For the past 7 years in 9th grade geography we have done what is affectionately known as the "NAP" or
North American Project. The project consists of three main parts. Part one requires the students to
construct a model of the North American Continent. They are permitted to use any type of building
material (clay and play-dough are always the most popular). The project must include major natural
formations such as rivers, lakes and mountains along with identifying the major natural resources. Part
two of this assignment entails a "play by play" description of how they created the project. Some choose
to do a time lapse video, some a power point, and others use photographs. These “play by plays” help the
students when it is time to present their individual projects. Following the presentations, a reflection paper
is due. Students must write about God creating the Earth and how His design is perfect. This year was
very successful as a number of students discovered new items about North America while at the same time
having fun and learning about our God’s creation.

Freshmen
Field Trip
On Wednesday, December 9th,
the freshmen class at MCS took a
field
trip
to
Stambaugh
Auditorium in Youngstown, Ohio.
They attended a performance by a
professional acting company out
of Boston called the Chamber
Repertory Theatre.
The actors dramatized five short
stories and one poem, all of which
the students had read in English
class before the day of the show.
The stories included two of Edgar
Allan Poe’s best-known works:
“The Raven” and “The Tell Tale
Heart.” The other stories were
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,”
“The Necklace,” “The Monkey’s
Paw,” and “The Celebrated
Jumping Frog of Calaveras
County.”
Although the trip was long, the
students
agreed
that
the
performance was worth the drive.
Their two favorite performances
were “The Tell Tale Heart” and
“The Celebrated Jumping Frog of
Calaveras County.” The acting
company consisted of only five
actors. Many of the freshmen
expressed how impressed they
were that the three men and two
women were able to portray such
a wide variety of characters.
Thank you again to the parents
who were willing to help transport
the students all the way
Youngstown.
It was a fun,
successful day!
