and guide and car must sometimes wait clients 2-3 hours. But very easy to find cheap taxi near

Note 1.2: Brief information about Lake Baikal settlements:
1. The small but tourist-wise settlement of Listvyanka is located on the western shore of Lake Baikal, 70 km from
Irkutsk. This old-style Siberian village situated at the source of the Angara River is famous for its trade history. From
the 18th century a ferry took merchants across the lake on their way to Mongolia, China and the Far East. The Museum
of Lake Baikal (Limnological Museum) provides information about the origin and wild life of the lake.
A great snack on the shore is omul, a delicacy of Lake Baikal , which has been just smoked for you.
2. Bolshie Koty is a small village, located on the lakeside of Baikal shore, 20 km northeast from a popular tourist
destination – Listvyanka. There are only two ways to get to Bolshie Koty - by boat or on foot; therefore, it is a quiet
and peaceful original Baikal fishermen village with few visitors. Surrounded by hills and picturesque rock cliffs this
solitary village has its own rhythm to life measured not by hours but by seasons making you completely relaxed and
free of busy schedules, noise and rush hours.
3. Khuzhir is the only big settlement on Olkhon Island. Olkhon is the largest island of Lake Baikal. It is 71 km long
and 15-25 km wide,. It is located 302 km from Irkutsk. Ferry operates from mid-May till mid-November from 09:00
am till 8:00 pm. In wintertime (from the end of January till the beginning of April) it is possible to go on the ice from
the mainland. Olkhon Island is the most beautiful and mysterious place on the Lake. The climate here is dry in
summer and there is not much snow in winter. Olkhon has forest and steppe parts, spectacular cliffs and sandy
beaches, small lakes and hills with picturesque view from the top. The Island is also well-known as one of the centers
of Shamanism, a primitive form of religion of the native people – Buryats.

Description:
Irkutsk was founded in 1661 when the Russian military cossack troops
established a fortress on the right bank of the Angara River. From late 17th
century, it was a political, economical and cultural center of Siberia. The
city's Russian classical architecture dates back to the period of the 1880s
when the city boomed after gold was discovered in the area. Most of the brick mansions and grand public buildings
varying in architectural styles were constructed in the late 19th - early 20th century. The beautiful Russian Orthodox
churches and a Polish Cathedral (the only Siberian Gothic-style building) are located in downtown. You will see many
small one- and two-story wooden houses or cabins that are decorated with "wooden laces" (hand-made carvings) as well
as modern constructions of the 20th century. Tourists visit either the Irkutsk Museum of Regional Studies or the
Decembrists' House. During the city tour of Irkutsk, our guide tells you about the development of the Siberian city
evolution, and shows the most interesting sights and peculiar features of one of the most beautiful cities in Russia.

Using our company's car, tourists and a guide come to the settlement of Ust-Orda, the administrative and
cultural center of Ust-Orda Buryat National Region, situated 70 km from Irkutsk. Its population is about 10 000
people, mostly involved in herding cows and sheep in the vast Mongolian-like steppe. In Ust-Orda, the local guide
meets the guests and takes them on an excursion of the Local Lore Museum, showing the history of Siberia from
the Stone Age to the present day using fossils, rock-painting, pictures, authentic tools, robes and dresses, weapons
and jewelry.
After getting dressed in Buryat traditional clothes, the tourists are invited into a yurt. Before entering, the main

Tour starts by special tourist modern train on Saturday from Irkutsk eastbound to Sludyanka and then to Port
Baikal. 4-5 stops from 15 min till 1 hour on more interesting spots. In Port Baikal tourists take a ferry to Listvyanka
and are transfered to Irkutsk. On Sunday the trip goes the other way. From from Irkutsk there is a transfer to Listvjanka
by bus then ferry and at 11.30 am boarding on the ORR modern train to go to Sludyanka and late in the evening

The famous Circum Baikal Railroad going along the south-western shore of Lake Baikal is one of the most
complicated railways in the world. The total length of its 38 tunnels is 7 km. The whole road is 86 km long. You can
take photos of Lake Baikal, ORR tunnels, bridges and railway stations. Lunch is included.

In the morning of Day 1 transfer to the station (about 09:00am local time) where tourists take a local train from
Irkutsk to the southern part of Lake Baikal. It takes about 2.5 hours to arrive at "Black Valley" station from which
tourists walk for 1 hour down the deep valley to the shore of the lake, where they spend some time on the beach or
walk to the nearest tunnel, and have some time for lunch. In the afternoon tourists take the ORR local train (about
2:00 pm), which has only two passenger carriages and one or two cargo wagons. The train goes very slowly, about
25-30 km/hour. With its long stops the travel time is about 4 hours. It runs along the Baikal shore, 5-20 meters from
the Lake and through the many tunnels. You can open the doors while the train is moving and take photos of Lake
Baikal, ORR tunnels, bridges and railway stations. In the evening, the train arrives in Port Baikal. The tourists
spend the night at a homestay in Port Baikal or Listvyanka. Since the train often arrives Port Baikal, after the last
ferry leaves for Listvyanka, the clients has/have to spend the night in Port Baikal in a homestay. On Day 2, tourists
have a full day excursion in Listvyanka, where they visit the Museum of Lake Baikal, a Russian Orthodox Church
made of wood and the viewpoint over the outlet of Angara. Then they take the afternoon public bus to come back to
Irkutsk.
Itinerary:
Today, we take the morning local train (9:15 am) on the Trans – Siberian Railway from Irkutsk to
“Black Vallye”, on the southern shore of Lake Baikal. Some time is spent here taking in the beauty of
this magnificent lake before boarding the ORR train to Port Baikal along the Old Railroad. We spend the
night in a homestay in Port Baikal or in Listvyanka.
Day 2: Our day begins with an excursion of Listvyanka, a traditional Siberian village. This will be followed by
a visit to The Limnological Museum (Museum of Lake Baikal) where you have a chance to learn about
the history, flora and fauna of this incredible and unique lake. In the afternoon, you will return to Irkutsk
by public transport (bus or boat).

immediately appear in one‟s mind: the boundless snow plains, Russian troika rides, never ending frosts. Some of these
stereotypes are true, some are not, and some are just funny. But one thing is for certain; you will be surprised and

Early this morning we begin our tour with a transfer from Irkutsk to Lisvyanka village. The good way/highway
from Irkutsk to Lake Baikal goes through a picturesque taiga-forest up and down the high hills. After a 1-hour drive
we will come to a viewpoint facing the Shaman Rock, at the source of the Angara River. Many myths and legends are
connected with this place.
The small but tourist-wise village of Listvyanka is located on the shore of Lake Baikal, 70 km from Irkutsk. This oldstyle Siberian village is famous for its trade history. From the 18 th century its ferry took merchants across the lake to
Mongolia and China and the Far East. In the old wooden church of St.Nicholas, you can burn a candle to your safe
and successful journey.
From Listvyanka we invite you to an unforgettable and safe journey on the ice road from Listvyanka village to
Bolshie Koty (a small settlement 20 km to the north). Here you will have a chance to drive/walk on the transparent ice
of the world renowned Lake. The ice is so clear that you can recognize the bottom stones through it. Usually Lake
Baikal is frozen over from mid January to early May. In this period it‟s the biggest skating rink with the ice thickness
of a meter or more. The lake serves as a temporary road, forming a navigable land route between the settlements at its
northern and southern ends. The safest period for such a trip, especially in the southern part of Lake Baikal, is from the
beginning of February to the end of March. The route goes along the shore of Lake Baikal. You may get out of the car
and walk around the ice to see how thick and strong it is (75-cm thickness of the ice is enough to hold a 15-ton truck
on it). The duration of this journey is about 1 hour.
You will also have the opportunity to visity The Museum of Lake Baikal (Limnological Museum) which provides
information about the origin and wild life of the lake. A video film gives you the opportunity to see the deepest point
of the lake‟s bottom (1.637 m) from the submarine board. From the museum, a path climbs to an observation point
with excellent views of the lake and mountains, Port Baikal and the Angara River.
In Listvyanka village, a variety of hot- or cold-smoked and salted omul and grayling fish is on sale. Several
private cafes and restaurants offer traditional Siberian or European cuisine.
At your request, a car can take you to the Museum of Wooden Architecture, half way from Listvyanka to Irkutsk.
A 2-hour excursion gives you an impression of the lifestyle of the 16th to 19th century Russian. Here you can learn
about the various aspects of village life, see the interiours of a Russian fort and a 15 th century watchtower, as well as

This is a very similar tour to the 3.2 Tour. An added activity is Dog Sledding, a fun and exceptional
experience.
You will be transferred from Irkutsk to Listvyanka village, Lake Baikal. Where you will enjoy a sightseeing
tour, a visit to St Nicholas Church, viewing point over the source of the Angara River and of course Dog Sledding!
You will also have an opportunity to visit the Museum of Lake Baikal (Limnological Museum) or the Museum of
Wooden Architecture (entrance ticket to only one museum is included).
You will depart your hotel/homestay around 9.30am and return at 5 - 6pm. Duration of the tour is 8-9 hr.
Note: When taking a dog sled ride, there is a possibility to share a lap among tourists, e.g. the lap of 10 km can be
started by one tourist and after 5 km ride a shift with another person may be done, so 2-3 tourists can try dog sledding
one after another during 10 -15 km ride. It is also possible to arrange a ride longer than 10 km.
(for one adult 5 km or more km).
After sightseeing around the Listvyanka settlement tourists will have a chance to view an open-air dog cage to see how
the harness is put on the dogs, the instructor will tell you about the huskies' character, teach you to hitch dogs up

The best time is from January 15 to March 15. This route offers great opportunities for back-country skiing in one
of the most beautiful and little known areas of Siberia. Gorgeous views over the valleys and mountain chains, virgin
slopes for beginners and for experienced skiers, authentic atmosphere of Siberian pioneer‟s life. Lots of snow and
sunshine, crystal air and pristine forest leave the unforgettable impressions of Russian winter.
Khamar Daban is not the highest mountain range in the area (the highest summit is 2375 m), it is popular among
local tourists who come here both in winter to ski and in summer for trekking and white water rafting. The snow layer
is typically about 1.5 meters deep in this region. There are still very few roads or trails going deep into the highland,
many peaks are still unclimbed and unnamed. The Alpine zone is located higher than 1600 m. Gentle slopes of the
Khamar Daban Mountains at the southern termination of Lake Baikal are the natural borderline of the Mongolian
territory and the Tunka Valley. Most of the summits are rounded bumps on barren ridges, linked by easy trekking
passes. In winter, it is a professional hunting area. The Khamar-Daban is rich in wild life and local people still busy
with traditional way of hunting - trapping sable, as it‟s fur is among the most beautiful and expensive ones. Other
animals include: musk deer, weasel, otter, elk red fox, hare, wolf etc.

Our 5-days back-country skiing tour in the Khamar Daban Mountains is for experienced skiers and true nature
lovers. Minimum distance to cover on skies is 80 km in 5 days. Trip starts from Sludyanka, a railway station at Baikal,
95 km from Irkutsk. Tourists ski up the Sludyanka River valley, pass the life marble quarry. Overnight at a weather
station cabin or in a hunter's lodge. During the next three days, they ski in alpine, climb up the Cherskiy peak, ski in
the surrounded valleys and passes, mountain lakes. Overnights in a cabin near the mountain lakes. Depending on the
skiers' skills, tourists do long or shorter round trips and ski down one of the steep summits. Tourists come back to
Sludyanka town.

This annual ski marathon has been held since 1976 for fans of cross-country skiing (the organizer is “Ski fans
Club”, professional skiers participate also). The piste goes through the taiga forest; it starts from one of the small
stations of the Trans-Siberian railroad “Ogonki”, which is situated mid way between Irkutsk and Lake Baikal, 60 km
from the city. The snow and air in this area are very clear and fresh. Normally the temperature during this time is
about -5 –14 C degrees. The race consists of 3 laps in the taiga forest, skiers run classic style. Participants may run
only 1or 2 laps if they want. The beginning of the piste is 670 meter above the sea level. The highest spot is 805
meters above the sea level, the difference in altitude between the laps is about 60 m. The marathon starts at 11-30 am.
We recommend the skiers experience our tour 4.4, which is in the same area where the marathon takes place or to stay
in one of the hotels in Irkutsk and have 1 day skiing trip in the forest close to Irkutsk.

The Super Baikal Ski Marathon has been held since 2000 as an official ski competition, although ski fans have
run this race for more than 25 years already. In spring, days get longer and day temperature is -4-10 oC, there is plenty
of snow. Alltogether it makes skiing conditions perfect. On March 8-th, Russia celebrates the International Women‟s
day, and sportsmen devote the fight in the super race to their beloved. The piste starts in Sludyanka town, situated at
the southern extremety of Lake Baikal, and located on the Trans-Siberian railroad (105 km from Irkutsk). The Piste
goes through Khamar-Daban mountains, along Sludyanka and Utulik rivers. The race starts at 4-00 am; and the skiers
run from Baikal shore (480 meters above the sea level) up Sludyanka river about 28 km to the highest spot of the piste
(1950 meters above the sea level, in alpine zone), the watershed between Sludyanka and Utulik rivers. Then the skiers
run down along the small stream “Spuskovaya”about 18 km to Utulik river and downstream towards Lake Baikal. This
area is rather wild and during this super marathon you may see wild birds and animals (sable, musk deer, goats etc).

Description: We offer a day trip to a popular Siberian ski resort situated right on the shore of Lake Baikal in
Baikalsk city. On top of the Baikalsk Mountains there is a magnificent view of Lake Baikal and the snow covered
peaks all around. Total length of Baikalsk ski slopes is over 15 km, maximum altitude difference –550m, 5 lifts. The
resort is one of the best in Siberia and the Far East of Russia, in 2001 Mr.Putin spent his seven-day vacation skiing in
Baikalsk. Snowboarding and cross-country skiing are also popular there.
Tourists are picked up early in the morning from hotel / homestay by private car and a guide and transferred to the
Lake Baikal shore, Baikalsk city (140 km, 3 hours). The road to Baikalsk is a part of the Moscow-Vladivostok
highway, going along the Siberian taiga forest. There are also a few gorgeous viewpoints on the way. The day is spent
at ski slopes, in the late afternoon driving back to Irkutsk.

smooth, sometimes rugged, but never the same. The woody hills of Pribaikalskiy ridge, with sharp capes, precipitous
cliffs, small sandy beaches rapidly following each other on the shoreline.
The section of Baikal from Bolshoe Goloustnoe to Bolshie Koty settlements is often clear ice, letting you
experience a magic feeling of speed skating on the world‟s biggest skating ring. Sometimes however, right after a
snowfall the ice may be covered with a layer of snow, in this case, please be ready to walk a few kilometers.
The first day is spent in Irkutsk getting your bearings and having a chance to familiarize yourself with this beautiful
city. A morning transfer to the settlement Bolshoe Goloustnoe which is the place where you will begin the exciting
experience of skating/walking on Lake Baikal to the village Bolshie Koty, about 30km. The night is spent under the
beautiful Siberian sky in a homestay/chalet. On the third day you will continue your skating/walking journey to the
village of Listvyanka, 20km. Here you have an option of getting a transfer back to Irkutsk where you will have a city
tour on the fourth day or staying overnight in this beautiful Siberian village and having a guided tour around its central
part, as well as having a chance to visit the Limnological Museum (Lake Baikal Museum) which provides information

Usually Baikal freezes over at mid January and in a few days the ice grows thick enough to hold a man. It is
followed by rather short period when the ice is mirror-smooth and one can hardly understand if the huge immensity is
hard crystal or it is very still and quiet water. Later on, the snow will partly cover the surface, wind will make it hard
and bumpy, cracks in ice will appear. End of January and early February is the ideal time when Baikal skating fans
hold a traditional skating tour along the western coast. This several day tour is one of the most fascinating and extreme
trips at Baikal. It requires good skating skills, winter travel experience and hunger for adventure. The tour starts in the
settlement Bolshaya Buguldeyka and runs down south, passes along Peschanaya Bay, Bolshoe Goloustnoe to Bolshie

Note: 1. The road to Olkhon (totally 300 km) is partly a bumpy dirt road going up and down snow covered hills (50

OLKHON ISLAND brief information:
Olkhon is the largest island on Lake Baikal. It is 71 km long and 15-25 km wide. Olkhon is the most beautiful
and mysterious place on the lake. The climate and landscape here are different from the rest of the lake. Average
temperature in Summer is 20 - 23°C above zero, many sunny days, rain is a rare thing. In winter there is not much
snow, or wind. Temperature is about –20°C. The Nature on Olkhon varies greatly: gorgeous sandy beaches followed
by spacious steppe hills, dramatic capes, pine-tree forests and picturesque rocks, beautifully coloured with yellow, red,
orange lichens. The island‟s dry southern end is rolling grassland – great for off-road mountain biking. In the centre of
the island, this natural environment transforms into thick woodland and at the northern tip there‟s a fair chance of
spotting freshwater seals. The channel between the island and the mainland is called Maloe More, it is one of the few
places at Baikal where water in summer is warm enough for swimming.
The Island is famous for being the centre of Shamanism, the common religion of the indigenous people of
Siberia: Buryats, Evenks, Tuva. Many of the shamans‟ sacred places and rock paintings are still found there. The
biggest settlement of Olkhon is the fisherman village of Khuzhir with a population of about 2.000 people.

Listvyanka, Bolshie Koty and Bolshoe Goloustnoe are located on the southwestern shore of Lake Baikal.
Allthough the 3 villages are not too far from each other, their history and character differ a lot. Listvyanka, the popular
tourist destination with developed infrastructure, the quiet and small Koty village, spread out fisherman Goloustnoe
settlement. The hike from Listyanka to Bolshoe Goloustnoe is one of the most comprehensive, naturalistic and
beautiful hikes available to tourists in the relatively short time in Baikal region. The flat surface of the biggest lake
looks so vast and unreal that one can hardly imagine it. Ice, like waters of the lake, is never the same: transparent and
black, with skies reflecting in it, full of cracks and bubbles ornamentally frozen in a meter thickness, rough and
smooth, snowy, torn with pressure ridges and holes. The new experience of “Arctic Trekking” is so new and
fascinating, that distance is covered quickly, time flies. The woody hills of Pribaikalskiy ridge, with sharp capes,
precipitous cliffs, and small sandy beaches slowly follow each other along the shoreline. The trail sometimes comes
close to the shore; sometimes take a long zigzag to the sea.
The route is 50 km long. We provide an experienced guide, food, sleeping bags, isomats, other camping

It is essential to have warm boots, wind stopper clothes, goggles.
Every winter Lake Baikal freezes over in the second fortnight of January. From the beginning of February till
the beginning of April the unique challenge of Baikal ice hiking / wild skating can be done in 2 days from Listvyanka
to Bolshie Koty village. The trail sometimes comes close to the shore, sometimes take a long zigzag to the sea.
In the morning tourists are transferred from Irkutsk to the Lake Baikal, 65 km. The breathtaking hike is started
in Listvyanka, one of the oldest Russian settlement on the lake, nowadays - the popular tourist destination with
developed infrastructure. Trail leads 16 km northward along the southwestern shore and finally comes to the small,
former gold mining Bolshie Koty village . With the population of about 60 people, this magnificent place is so quiet in
winter, that one immediately feels “on the edge of the world”, away from culture and civilization. Overnight in log
made boutique hotel “Koty Chalet”. In the night the traditional Russian winter fun – banya, with hot steam and birch
brooms dinner is followed by the Baikal dinner. Next day walk around Koty villager, hike back to Listvyanka and
departure to Irkutsk.

Thickness of ice near Listvianka is norlly 70-80 cm, in warm winter - 45-55 cm.
Cars start driving from Listvyanka to Koty from second part of February till the beginning of April.

The best time for Trekking is from May 10 till September 20, for Canoe trips from June 10 till August 25
Even though the 3 villages are not too far from each other, their history and character differs a lot. The hike from
Listyanka to Bolshoe Goloustnoe is one of the most comprehensive, naturalistic and beautiful hikes available to
tourists in the relatively short time they spend in Baikal region. The trail goes along the lakeside in the larch and pine
tree forest, through the steppe slopes, pebble beaches, and green meadows with gorgeous views of the turquoise-blue
vastness of the great lake.
The route is 50 km long. We provide an experienced guide, food, tents, sleeping bags, isomats, other
camping gear and canoes for sea kayaking. The road from Irkutsk to Bolshoe Goloustnoe takes about 3 hours
by our company‟s van.
Note: 1. A part of the route from B.Koty to Listvyanka (20 km) goes through a rugged terrain and takes about 5-6
hours for an experienced hiker. Upon your request, a hydrofoil can be taken from B. Koty to Listvyanka, where
tourists may go sightseeing with their guide.

This tour combines nature trekking along the shore of Baikal, white water rafting down a Siberian river and

Rafting segment is 4 days and covers about 95 km. A picturesque river gorge, fast and unexpected rapids, the virgin
taiga-forest are the exceptional features of this part of the tour. A Relaxing trip to Olkhon at the end of the adventurous
tour provides a perfect opportunity to sense the magnificent beauty of Baikal, to observe the life style of native Buryat

The Tour starts in a popular vacation and camping place – Peschanaya Bay. It takes about 4 hours by speedy
hovercraft to get there from Irkutsk city. During our first trekking journey from Peschanaya to the Goloustnoe village
there is no proper trail along Baikal, so the shore is rather untouched. The High cliffs of Pribaikalskiy range fall
straight into the turquoise lake waters. There are several national park rangers‟ huts on the way, the only inhabited
areas on the route. On the third day the Goloustnoe settlement is reached. It is a big former fisherman and logging
village with a nice church. We spend the night with a family in a wooden cabin, O/W outside, a traditional Russian
sauna is awaiting in the evening. Canoes are left with the family. From today, our journey continues along a trekking
trail. The narrow trail goes slightly up and down along Baikal. Tourists pass the beautiful Kadilniy cape, small sandy
and pebble beaches, Seagull cliff and climb Skreaper pass with superb views over the lake. Bolshie Koty is a cozy
quite village with no automobile roads. One only gets to Bolshie Koty by boat or in winter by a 4WD vehicle on the
ice.

Both settlements, Listvyanka and Bolshie Koty are located at the shore of Lake Baikal, 20 km away.
Nethertheless two villages differ a lot: Listvyanka is one of the mostly visited places on the lake, Bolshie Koty is a
much more remote and isolated village (reachable only by feet or by boat, no road) where one can relax and take a
break from city life and traffic noise to simply enjoy the beauty and serenity of this region. This fully guided adventure
tour offers a good combination of sightseeing in famous Listvyanka and trekking to a peaceful remote area of Bolshie
Koty.

6.1.6. WINTER
HIKING TOUR ALONG Lake Baikal SHORE (as summer Tour 7.1.1) - 4 Days/3 Nights:
The best time is from February 25 till April 10. (Possibility from the Feb 1st, but it is rather cold & windy). At
the end of March-beginning of April possible to see Baikal seals on ice, but as usual
on enough far distance.
Tourists need to have warm clothes, wind breaker, goggles, and good hiking boots!!!
Allthough the 3 villages are not too far from each other, their history and character differ a lot. Listvyanka, the popular
tourist destination with developed infrastructure, the quiet and small Koty village, spread out fisherman Goloustnoe
settlement. The hike from Listyanka to Bolshoe Goloustnoe is one of the most comprehensive, naturalistic and
beautiful hikes available to tourists in the relatively short time in Baikal region. The flat surface of the biggest lake
looks so vast and unreal that one can hardly imagine it. Ice, like waters of the lake, is never the same: transparent and
black, with skies reflecting in it, full of cracks and bubbles ornamentally frozen in a meter thickness, rough and
smooth, snowy, torn with pressure ridges and holes. The new experience of “Arctic Trekking” is so new and
fascinating, that distance is covered quickly, time flies. The woody hills of Pribaikalskiy ridge, with sharp capes,
precipitous cliffs, and small sandy beaches slowly follow each other along the shoreline. The trail sometimes comes
close to the shore; sometimes take a long zigzag to the sea.
The route is 50 km long. We provide an experienced guide, food, sleeping bags, isomats, other camping
gear. If tousists have skills, skates or skies are taken for this tour. The road from Irkutsk to Bolshoe
Goloustnoe takes about 3 hours by our company‟s van.

brief information on OLKHON ISLAND:
Olkhon is the largest island on Lake Baikal. It is 71 km long and 15-25 km wide. Olkhon is the most beautiful
and mysterious place on the lake. The climate and landscape here are different from the rest of the lake. Average
temperature in Summer is 20 - 23°C above zero, many sunny days, rains are seldom. In winter there is not much
snow, or wind, temperature is about –20°C. The Nature on Olkhon is extraordinary and varies greatly: gorgeous sandy
beaches followed by spacious steppe hills, dramatic capes, pine-tree forests and picturesque rocks, beautifully coloured
with yellow, red, orange lichens. The island‟s dry southern end is rolling grassland – great for off-road mountain
biking. This transforms into thick woodland and at the northern tip there‟s a fair chance of spotting freshwater seals.
The channel between the island and the mainland is called Maloe More, it is one of the few places at Baikal where
water in summer is warm enough for swimming.
The island has been formed during millions of years of tectonic development. Lake Baikal‟s deepest point
(1637m) is near the Eastern Shore of the Island. On the island there are several small lakes, the highest mountain is the
forbidden Zhima Peak, 1300m-high,. Olkhon Island has several archaeological sites, beginning with the remains of an
Iron Age fortress built by mysterious Kurykans, the ancient Chinese people who lived here between 500 and 1000 AD.
The Island is also famous for being the center of Shamanism, the common religion of the indigenous peoples of
Siberia: Buryats, Evenks, Tuva. Olkhon, always considered as a sacred spot, served as a place where Shamanist
ceremonies, donations, festivals and funerals took place. Many of the shamans sacred places and rock paintings are
still found there. The biggest settlement on Olkhon is the fisherman village of Khuzhir with a population of about
2.000 people.

One of the most attractive and wild areas interesting for any traveler or photographer. This area was named after a
small river that left a deep and narrow canyon in the ridges of the flat plains of the valley. The valley of Tunka is
sprinkled with settlements as it is good for agriculture and cattle breading, with rich soils and good pastures. The
Tunka Area was traditionally populated with Siberia‟s indigenous people - Buryats, the descendants of Mongols, who
has developed original culture.
From Irkutsk, travelers are driven in a Russian 4WD military-style vehicle to the valley. The road to Lake Baikal
curves through the thick bushes of Siberian taiga-forest. , This is a part of the main highway between Moscow and
Vladivostok that stretches for over 10.000 km. After driving for about 2 hours from Irkutsk, before the road zigzags
down to the lake, we make a stop at a magnificent point with a view of the waters of Baikal and the Khamar-Daban
Mountains beyond. At a small market place, local people sell a variety of smoked fish from Baikal and other local
delicacies. Right below your feet, the Kultuk settlement is situated at the southern extremity of Lake Baikal, from
where the road makes sharp turn to the west and after climbing a relatively gradual pass gets to the "Golden Tunka
Valley".
The Tunka valley belongs to the territory of the Republic of Buryatia. In two hours, you finally come to the
Arshan settlement is located at the sole of the Sayan Mountains (Tunkinskie Pinnacles) that are snow topped for over
ten months a year. It is famous as the biggest natural mineral water health resort. Sunny weather, nice scenery and
clean highland air make it an attractive destination for both Russian and overseas travelers. Those who like adventure
activities can take the trek up the Kyngarga River gorge. Another popular climb is the nearest summit of 2.005 m. If
you take pains to overcome the steep slope and challenging path, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the
surrounding picks, forests, plains and lakes of Tunka and the Arshan village. Ancient volcano cones are clearly visible
at the bottom of the valley. Various relaxing trips in the vicinity of Arshan are also available,. Some examples include

The East Sayan Mountains is a relatively young, rocky mountain system covering a vast territory from Altay
Mountains throughout Tuva Republic to Russia-Mongolian border and Lake Baikal. The heart of this land -the Oka
valley, hidden in the center of Sayan Mountains, is separated from the nearest railway station with more then 400 km
of taiga forest, swift rivers, High Mountain passes. Thirty years ago the Oka valley was virtually untouched, so
Russian geographers and geologists had to organize a charter biplane flights or a long horse trip to get there. But the
fame of that outstandingly beautiful country with people and culture which survived through centuries excited the
adventure seekers. A dirt road, built at 15 years ago, opened the access to the region. Now the western part of Buryat
Republic with the center in Orlick settlement (490 km from Irkutsk) is getting very popular among Russian and foreign
outdoor enthusiasts. Many natural attractions keep high interest to this magnificent land. Trekkers come to enjoy the
uninhabited mountain valleys and extinct volcanoes, relax at thermal baths, climb unknown summits, white-water fans
appreciate tough rapids of the Oka river combined with picturesque views and good fishing. Horseback riders,
fishermen, bikers are developing new routes around Orlick.
We offer 6-day jeep tour to the Oka valley. Tourists spend the first day near Lake Baikal, having lunch at the
coast of the world‟s deepest lake, in the afternoon they come to Arshan spa, situated at the foot of the Sayans.
Beautiful views, clean air, a number of mineral springs made Arshan an interesting place to visit. Next morning jeep
drives up the Tunka to the vast Okinskoe Plateau, called a small Tibet, and further to Dab Khag, (1600m above the sea
level). You‟ll see the Oka, which starts from the lake as a tiny small spring and turns to a great river. Dab Khag is a
small buryat farm, where a family of peasants and hunters lives. Tourists are meet-and-greet in the house according to
the traditions of nomads. Next morning a day horse trip to ancient volcano lava fields in the wide valley of Oka is
done. True hikers can also climb a mountain to observe the whole valley. On the other day jeep takes a group 15-20
km up the Oka River, where the dingey is pumped and a short rafting is started. On rafting tourist can enjoy beautiful
views of Oka and Sayan Mountains from the water and try fishing for grayling, pull and other Siberian fish. In the
evening, sauna is followed by traditional Buryat family dinner. One of the most impressive experiences is a touch to
distinctive culture of Buryats, descendants of the great Genghis Khan.

The best time is from early June till early September. The total bicycling distance is 120 km (about 40 km a day),
nights in hostels or in tents. Good quality asphalt road, slanting low hills, so the whole route is easy to cycle. When
passing through railway stations, tired riders can always get a lift by local trains, which are quite frequent. The route
can be supplemented by one/ two-day trip into the valleys of the Hamar-Daban mountain range, at the tourists' request.
Description:
Tourists get a local train from Irkutsk to town Sludyanka located at the southern extremity of Lake Baikal. In the
afternoon the group starts riding towards Ulan Ude. On the way riders will pass two marble quarries, small warm water
lakes near the Snezhnaya (Snow) river, beautiful mountain streams, thick Siberian taiga-forest, solitary beaches of
Lake Baikal and many other natural attractions. In the evening of Day 4 the group takes the suburban train to Irkutsk.
Arrival in Irkutsk the on same night. Another option is one day cycling along the Old Baikal Railroad.

This is One of the most interesting tours on Lake Baikal. While on the boat voyage, several stops in many
picturesque and well-known places will be made where tourists can get a chance to walk and explore the areas for
about 0,5-4 hours. This tour combines the thrilling feeling of a sea voyage with some relaxation such as: sunbathing on
the best sandy beaches of Baikal, walking along the shore and witnessing various artifacts of ancient cultures. We also
take small dinghies or canoes to try paddling on the sea.
A rented boat of "Yaroslavets" type (24 m length, 4 m width) has one quite spacious passenger cabin with 4 berths,
and a dining cabin, which can also serve as a sleeping room for 2-3 persons. Tourists stay overnight either on board or
on the shore in tents. Though this boat has 4-5 sleeping beds for tourists, it can be rented for up to 12 tourists; in this

6.5.1. RAFTING TOUR ON THE IRKUT RIVER, Grade II st

The best time for this Grade II tour from settlement Anchuk to Shamanka village is July and August. This 4-day
rafting route of 110 km is designed for beginners. Russian catamarans and rubber rafts can be used for the trip. The
average flow rate varies from 100 to 120 m2/s with an average fall of 5 meters over 4 km. The region is almost
uninhabited; a few hunters‟ huts can be found on the Irkut River banks. As well as Picturesque river gorges,
unexpected rapids and the virgin taiga-forest.
Description:
The travelers are transferred from Irkutsk to Kultuk. Along the southern part of the Lake Baikal area. Tourists
begin their rafting adventure at the Anchuk Resort before the Zyrkuzunskaya Bend where the Irkut River squeezes
through a tight gorge. The banks are steep and forested. The river is 50 to 100 meters wide. About 5 km before it turns
to the west, there are three shoals. After the shoals and a straight section of 12- km, the Zubkogan Rapids emerge
(Grade 2). Further along, another, straight section begins. Fishing is good near the junction of the Bolshaya (Big) and
Malaya (Small) Zubkogan streams, and there are buildings nearby to provide shelter. One km downstream is another
rapid called Zubkoganskaya Shoal and next to it the Maly (Small) Rapid. The left side is choked with rocks; the river
still flows through with the help of the steep forested slopes; the valley soon opens up at the Shiroky (Wide) River
which flows into the Irkut River.
The most difficult rapid of the tour, the Bolshoye (Big) Rapid is 5 km downstream from the junction of the Irkut
and Shiroky Rivers. It takes you through 300 meters of waves and huge boulders scattered throughout the riverbed.
After the rapids, the valley turns to the east, and large rocks appear on both sides. However, more rapids are coming.
The long and tricky Kosaya (Oblique) Rapid is 7 km past the Bolshoye Rapids. Next is the Byk (Bull) Rapid which is
under a high wall of reddish rock 10 km past the Bolshoye. Finally, Glubokaya (Deep) River meets the Irkut and the
river valley grows wider. Traces of timber-cutting can be seen on the banks, and it is easy to spot the places where logs
were dropped into the water for their journey down to Irkutsk. There are a few forested islands on the way to the
deserted settlement Vyguzovo on the river's left bank. The trip ends with the 0.5-km wall of the famous Shamansky
Cliff. Shamanka, the first large settlement on the left bank, is located under this cliff. Although there are loose rocks on
the face, rock climbers use the cliff for practice. These unsteady rocks are hazardous and climbers should be cautious.
At Shamanka, a ferry connects the settlement with the road on the right bank.

The East Sayan Mountains are a relatively young, rocky mountain range covering a vast territory from the Altay
Mountains throughout the Tuva Republic to the Russian-Mongolian border and Lake Baikal. The heart of this territory
–is the Oka valley, 240 km long, hidden in the center of the Sayan Mountains, separated from the nearest railway
station with more than 400 km of taiga forest, swift rivers, and high mountain passes. Thirty years ago the Oka valley
was virtually untouched by civilization, so Russian geographers and geologists had to organize a charter biplane flights
or a long horse trip to get there. But the fame of that outstandingly beautiful country with its people and culture which
survived throughout centuries excited the adventure seekers. A dirt road, built 15 years ago, opened the access to the
region, and still there is no single industrial plant in the area. Now the western part of Buryat Republic with its center
in Orlick settlement is getting very popular among Russian and foreign outdoor enthusiasts. Many natural attractions
ensure continual interest to this magnificent land. Trekkers come to enjoy the uninhabited mountain valleys and extinct
volcanoes, relax at thermal baths, climb unknown summits,. white-water fans appreciate tough rapids of the Oka River
combined with picturesque views and good fishing. Horseback riders, fishermen, bikers are developing new routes
around Orlick.
Our ten days horseback tour in the surroundings of Orlick will provide you with a perfect opportunity to
experience the endless expanses of Siberian taiga forest, camp in the wildness, ride a small Buryat horse, and acquaint
you with the Buryat culture by seeing the way that Buryats used to live throughout the centuries.
On The first day, tourists are driven to Lake Baikal. A stop will be made at the viewpoint over the southwest
extremity of the world‟s deepest lake,. Following this, the drive continues up the Tunka to the vast Okinskoe Plato
(2200m), called a small Tibet, and further to Orlick along the Oka, which grows from a small spring to a great river. In
Orlick they meet their local guide and have a traditional dinner. Next morning tourists pack their bags and begin the
horseriding adventure up the Sentsa river valley. On the following day they come to the Khoyto-Gol spa. Situated on
the slope of the hill in spruce and cedar tree forest, the mineral baths of 33 oC put the body into a tranquil and relaxed
state. The day after, the group takes an easy round trip through taiga forest to Shutkhulaysky miniral springs to taste
the ferrous waters. After a days rest another famous spot is visited. Riding horses up the Dunda-Gol river with many
lakes, tourists cross the Zhoigan-Daban pass (1935m above the sea level) and get to one of the most spectacular
corners of the Tuva Republic – Zhoigan spa. On this territory of less then one acre, there are about thirty sources of
mineral waters of different content and temperatures that vary from 18 to 40 oC. Rising more then 3000 m. high snow
capped massif of Peak Topographer surrounds the place. The group returns to Khoiyto-Gol the following day. At the
final stage of the route the track leads travellers northeast through a labyrinth of gorges to the Volcano Valley.The
Two ancient volcano craters located close to each other are easily recognizable in the vastness of the lava fields. After
observing the volcanoes tourists go down the Zhombolok - narrow green-water river. In the place where the
Zhombolok flows into the Oka near the Sayany settlement, tourists turn their horses up the valley to reach Orlick.
Itinerary:
Day 1:
Arrival in Irkutsk, trsf to HTL. City tour 1 hour, observation tour of Lake Baikal 5-6 hrs.
Day 2:
Driving to Lake Baikal, then via the Tunka valley to Okinsky pass and down to Orlick (1600m)
Day 3-4: Beginning of horseback trip up the Senca valley. Arrival to Khoyto-Gol spa.
Day 5:
A day trip to Shutkhulaysky mineral spring.
Day 6-7: Radial trip to the Tuva Republic, including a visit to the Zhoygan spa. Sightseeing. Coming back to
Khoyto-Gol.
Day 810:
Visiting the Kropotkin volcano through the lava fields, riding down the Zhombolok river to Sayany
settlement and further to Orlick.
Day 11
Return to Irkutsk.
Day 12:
Breakfast, transfer to station / airport

The Chivyrkuysky Bay at the northern part of the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula is one of Baikal's most beautiful and
picturesque bays. Surrounded by dark blue mountain ridges and thick taiga, it gives the impression of real wilderness.
The bay's relatively shallow depth (18 m), warm water, and the abundance of sea grass in the coves make it attractive
for all kinds of fish such as perch, pike, trout, grayling and omul. From Ust-Barguzine tourists trek or hitch-hike to the
small settlement Monakhovo at Svyatoy Nos Peninsula, where the trek begins. After 6 km trekking along the
shoreline, you come to the settlement Kurbulik. This largest village at the Chivyrkuysky Bay has about 20 houses
along its big, sandy beach. Fishing is excellent here. The road goes northward along the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula
shoreline. Soon it gradually becomes a path turning to the west and goes along the beautiful sandy bays of Krestovaya
and Zmeinaya. Most tourists come to the Zmeinaya Bay for fishing, swimming and thermal springs. The mineral hot
water baths (45C) are situated 5 meters away from the waters of Baikal. So right after you get red and can't stand the
temperature anymore, you jump into the cool waters of the Zmeinaya Bay to chill out - this is one of the favorite forms
of entertainment for the locals. From the Zmeinaya, the trail continues to the north to the Onkogonskaya Bay. With its
rocky capes and flowering meadows, it is a very picturesque place and a opportunity for taking pictures.

Public boat from Irkutsk to Ust-Barguzin. Summer schedule is from 15.06 to 10.09. At Other times train to Ulan Ude and bus to Ust-Barguzin.
Day 2:
Hiking to Kurbulic settlement. Overnight in a tent on the beach.
Day 3:
Hiking to the Zmeinaya Bay.
Day 4-5: Camping in Zmeinaya Bay. Excursions to thermal springs, Onkogonskaya Bay, fishing, and
swimming.
Day 6:
Hiking back to Kurbulik

6.5.4. CANOEING DOWN THE LENA RIVER

Lena River (4.400 km in length) is the longest river in Siberia, and one of the longest rivers in the world. The
following Class 1 easy canoeing (sea kayaking) tour in the upper, relatively calm reaches of the Lena River covers 340
kilometres within ten days. It is best taken during July and August, when weather is mild or warm with 15 to 25C
days and cool 6 to 10C nights. In addition to rafting, the trip has some excellent opprotunities for fishing, swimming
and photography. Although there are no strong rapids or shoals at this part of the Lena, tourists can enjoy endless and
virgin taiga forest on both sides of the river. At one time, The Lena was quite unpopulated and very remote. It
therefore became a destination for political exiles during the Stalin time. The ruins of some prisons can still be found
near the banks of the river. Travellers will pass several old, original Siberian villages, where most of the people now
are busy with fishing and hunting. The Lena River is also a nesting place for some rare species of herons, eagles,
cranes etc.

6.6. MARATHONS IN BAIKAL REGION
6.6.1.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING BAIKAL MARATHON, 50 KM -

This annual ski marathon has been held since 1976 for fans of cross-country skiing (the organizer is “Ski fans
Club”, professional skiers participate also). The piste goes through the taiga forest; it starts from one of the small
stations on the Trans-Siberian railroad “Ogonki”, which is situated mid way between Irkutsk and Baikal, about 60 km
from the city. The snow and air in this area are very clear and fresh. Normally the temperature during this time is about
-5 –14°C.
The race consists of 3 laps in the taiga forest, skiers run classic style. Participants may run only 1or 2 laps if they
want. The beginning of the piste is 670 meter above sea level. The highest spot is 805 meters above sea level, and the
lap difference in altitude is about 60 m. The marathon starts at 11-30 am. We recommend the skiers to experience our
tour 4.4, which is in the same area where the marathon takes place or to stay in one of the hotels in Irkutsk and and go
for a 1 day skiing trip in the forest close to Irkutsk.

The Super Baikal Ski Marathon has been held since 2000 as an official ski competition, although ski fans have
run this race for more than 25 years already. In spring, when days get longer and the temperature is -4-10 oC, there is
plenty of snow, and alltogether this makes skiing conditions favorable. On March 8-th Russia celebrates the
International Women‟s day, and sportsmen devote the fight in the super race to their beloved.
The piste starts from Sludyanka town which is situated at the Southern part of Baikal, on the Trans-Siberian
Railway (105 km from Irkutsk). The Path continues through Khamar-Daban mountains, along Sludyanka and Utulik
rivers.
The super marathon starts at 4-00 am and the skiers run from Baikal shore (480 meters above the sea level) up
Sludyanka river, about 28 km, to the highest point of the route (1950 meters above the sea level, in alpine zone), the
watershed between Sludyanka and Utulik rivers. Then the skiers run down along the small stream “Spuskovaya”,
about 18 km, to Utulik river and downstream towards Lake Baikal. This area is rather wild and during this super
marathon you may see wild birds and animals (sable, musk deer, goats etc).
