DOSSIER DE PRESSE 24 HEURES DU MANS 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup PRESS KIT LE MANS 24 HOURS 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup under License www.oak-racing.com OAK RACING AT THE LE MANS 24 HOURS OAK Racing will enter four prototypes at the Le Mans 24 Hours and is targeting a podium finish for the fourth consecutive year. 1 Based at the Le Mans 24 Hours Technoparc, OAK Racing has developed both its activities as a manufacturer and its Design Office, which has created a brand new LMP2 car. The team has also entered endurance racing’s premier category, LMP1, and has put in place an international sporting programme, which began in March with three cars competing in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. A fourth car, an LMP2, will also race at the Le Mans 24 Hours courtesy of the invitations won by the squad in 2010. The team will therefore enter four OAK-Pescarolos, two LMP1s and two LMP2s. “Following our three consecutive LMP2 podiums at the Le Mans 24 Hours, OAK Racing has made another huge step forwards,” says Jacques Nicolet, President of OAK Racing, “2011 is an exceptional year for us for many reasons. “Right from the beginning of the season, the team has had to manage an enormous workload, starting with creating and building a new LMP2 car to be ready for Sebring as early as March. We also had to face the difficulties caused by the accidents of the #24 and #15 cars less than seven weeks before Le Mans. Despite all of this, the team has kept its motivation intact and our four cars are ready. Our objective is to maintain our achievements of previous years, and why not do even better, even though we are on a learning curve in the LMP1 class! “2011 is also the year that our programme globalised with an entry into the ILMC, which is about to become the FIA World Endurance Championship. The series perfectly matches the multi-cultural nature of our drivers – French, Monegasque, Portuguese, Belgian, Japanese and Czech!” under License License under www.oak-racing.com www.oak-racing.com #15 and #24 LMP1s 2 #15 OAK-Pescarolo LMP1 The #15 car is given to Guillaume Moreau, Pierre Ragues and Tiago Monteiro. Guillaume and Pierre, both young, talented endurance drivers, have numerous podiums under the belts. They have participated in Le Mans several times and have already climbed the LMP2 podium in 2010 and 2008 with OAK Racing. Ex-Formula 1 driver Tiago Monteiro also has experience of the event and has enjoyed many successes in FIA World Championships, particularly the WTCC where he has raced since 2007. He replaces Matthieu Lahaye, injured during the recent Spa 1000kms, although Matthieu will still join the team during the week as a sporting consultant. #24 OAK-Pescarolo LMP1 In the #24 car, three experienced gentlemen drivers will share the driving duties for the third successive year: Jacques Nicolet, the team owner, Richard Hein and Jean-François Yvon. The crew has already proven its competitiveness with a podium at the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours. “In the LMP1 class we are on a steeper learning curve,” explains Managing Director François Sicard. “Our objective is not to challenge the big car manufacturers, but to be part of the tight battle between the petrol cars of the privateer teams and to be well placed overall. In view of the first ILMC and Le Mans Series races, we hope to do well even though we haven’t been able to score many results up until now. Le Mans is a unique race where experience counts for a lot!” The LMP1 OAK-Pescarolos are powered by the latest V8 Judd DB 3.4 litre engine and benefit from aerodynamic evolutions created by the team’s Design Office. The cars will run on Dunlop tyres, OAK Racing being the company’s official LMP1 development team. under License www.oak-racing.com #35 and #49 LMP2s 3 #35 OAK-Pescarolo LMP2 Following a third place at the 12 Hours of Sebring and sixth at the Spa 1000kms, the #35 LMP1 car sees solid gentlemen drivers Frédéric Da Rocha and Patrice Lafargue again team up with Andrea Barlesi. The 19-year-old Belgian driver won the Formula Le Mans title in 2010 and, along with Patrice Lafargue, will be making his Le Mans 24 Hours debut this year. He is also the youngest driver in the 79th edition of the race, which, with Frédéric Da Rocha. gives the crew the unique statistic of boasting the youngest and oldest drivers in the event. #49 OAK-Pescarolo LMP2 The #49 LMP2 car, the team’s fourth OAK-Pescarolo prototype, will receive logistical and technical support from close neighbours and friends DAMS and boasts an international driver line-up composed of Jan Charouz - Czech Republic-, Nicolas De Crem - Belgium - and Shinji Nakano Japan. The car will carry the team’s traditional pink-and-black colour scheme. Jan Charouz, reserve driver of the Lotus Renault GP Formula 1 team, has already starred in endurance racing, winning the 2009 LMS title and reaching the second step of the LMP2 podium at Le Mans with OAK Racing in 2010. The team’s new recruit, ex-Formula 1 driver Shinji Nakano, will be making his fifth appearance at Le Mans. Finally, the third member of the crew, and the team’s ‘non-professional driver’ as required by the regulations, is the promising youngster Nicolas De Crem, who finished second in LMP2 at the recent Spa 1000km and is only 20-years-old. “Following our LMP2 podium finishes in 2008 and 2009, we achieved a fantastic double result in 2010 with both our LMP2 cars finishing inside the top ten overall and second and fourth in class,” says François Sicard. “After finishing on the podium with the #35 LMP2 at Sebring in March, we would like to carry on that momentum and either repeat our recent results at Le Mans, or even better them, despite the fact that the entry is very competitive. We are confident in the quality of our crews to help us achieve this objective.” The LMP2 OAK-Pescarolos are powered by the new V8 Judd HK 3.6 litre engine. They are both brand-new cars produced by the team’s Design Office to meet the 2011 regulations. They are shod with Dunlop tyres. www.oak-racing.com under under License License An LMP1 and LMP2 manufacturer 4 OAK Racing has created its own Design Office, managed by Nicolas Clémençon under the supervision of Christophe Chapelain, the team’s Technical Director. The Design Office has ensured the development of the two specs of OAK-Pescarolo prototypes. The most important evolution has been made to the OAK-Pescarolo LMP2 car, the Design Office only keeping the tub from the original. Every mechanical part has been rethought and the aerodynamics developed with sessions in the wind tunnel. The work done on the LMP1 OAK-Pescarolo has mainly surrounded modifications to its aerodynamics with the creation of two different body kits, one for shorter races and a special version for the Le Mans 24 Hours. Both were validated in the wind tunnel. The team has grown continually since the end of 2006 when it was purchased by Jacques Nicolet and now employs around 50 people, all dedicated to the outfit’s two main activities. Quality partners The three prototypes the team has entered in the ILMC will all carry the iconic blue-and-orange racing livery of Gulf Oil International after this year the team become an official partner of Caroil, the exclusive, official distributor of Gulf lubricants for France, Belgium and Luxembourg. The #49 LMP2 will carry the team’s traditional black-and-pink livery. Dunlop, tyre supplier for the LMP2s for the past two years, has strengthened its already solid partnership by appointing OAK Racing as its exclusive LMP1 development team. The tightening of the links with the tyre manufacturer guarantees stability for the team and secures the technical evolution of the prototypes which benefit from the essential qualities of the Dunlop tyres and crews. “The 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours sees Dunlop equipping the largest number of cars for many years,” explains Jean-Félix Bazelin, Dunlop Motorsport Competition Director. “We have a very close working relationship with OAK Racing and the definition of our products is based on the exchanges between Dunlop and the team’s development engineers. We have utilised our mutual expertise in the relationship between cars and tyres to create high-performance, reliable, bespoke compounds, crucial for a race such as the Le Mans 24 Hours which gives the tyres a very hard work out! We have full confidence in our partners OAK Racing and together we are targeting a podium finish!” under License www.oak-racing.com SPORTING PROGRAMME 2011 5 OAK Racing will enter two OAK-Pescarolo LMP1 prototypes and one OAK-Pescarolo LMP2 prototype in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, and another OAK-Pescarolo LMP2 prototype at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Intercontinental Le Mans Cup is a new international series organised by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest. It includes seven events spread across three continents; Europe, USA and Asia. Five of the races belong to existing series, the American Le Mans Series and Le Mans Series.
