Class of 2014 leaves a legacy

It’s 2010. The gym’s bleachers are packed and fit to burst.
Mr. Bilbrey’s voice booms
over the loudspeaker, daring
students to out-scream each
other for the coveted spirit
stick. Everyone looks towards
the upperclassmen, wondering
if the seniors or juniors will
win it this time. But after five
minutes of auditory chaos, Mr.
Bilbrey releases the spirit stick
into the air, and it flies toward
none other than the freshmen.
That same class turns out to
be the current Class of 2014
seniors. In addition to an impressive knack for winning the
spirit stick, the Class of ‘14
leaves behind a rich record of
admirable academics, vigorous volunteering, and stupendous support for their fellow
classmates.
With ten Academic Allstars, nine AP scholars, five
National Merit Commended
Scholars and one National
Merit Scholar, there’s no debating the sheer intelligence
of this year’s seniors. Enrollment for senior honors and
AP classes is particularly high,
and college acceptances range
anywhere from California to
Paris, including several highlevel institutions like Tufts
University and the University
of Notre Dame. In short, the
scholastic legacy of the Class
of 2014 will be hard to forget.
In addition to analytic intelligence, the graduating class
contains several individuals
who excel in creative and artistic intelligence.
Seniors Jessi Hawes, Mary
Buchholz, Erika Gavrock,
Anna Arnold, and Abbey Muffoletto will have their artwork
displayed at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis Art Show
this month. At the Wordsmith
Writing Competition, senior
Lucy Kaplan placed first in
her grade level freshman and
senior year. She also placed
second in the overall competition this year.
Kevin Rotzoll, lighting technician of the spring musical
West Side Story, and Sydney
Valadie, assistant director
of West Side Story, both recently received nominations
for “Outstanding Technical
Achievement” at the 2014
High School Musical Theatre
Awards, hosted by the Orpheum. The school-renowned
band Half Dollar Tonic, which
includes seniors Matthew Incardona, Kenny Ledet, and
Brice Norris, won the 2014
SBA Talent Show, performed
at this year’s Junior/Senior
Prom, played several shows
at the New Daisy Theatre, and
performed on Fox 13 News.
As for sports, eight senior
athletes have signed to continue playing sports in college.
Two students, Mayson Morrissett for cross country and
Grace Summers for tennis,
received Top Five Honors in
the Commercial Appeal’s Best
of the Preps. In addition, this
year the seniors led the girls
bowling team to their sixth
State Championship title.
The seniors also put their
bright, strong minds towards
more practical experiences.
Throughout the years, the

astounding amounts of effort towards school projects,
volunteer efforts, and other
community service organizations. The senior project raised
around $3,000 for Habitat for
Humanity, and the seniors
won the class competition
for the canned food drive this
year. Senior Becca Siciliano, a
member of the Bridge Builders Leadership Board, has immensely helped expand and
further the Bridge Builders
program over the past year.
The volunteer work of the
seniors may have contributed
towards the refreshing attitudes exhibited by the class
as a whole. Though it’s hard
to make generalizations about
such an eclectic group of individuals, many students regard
the Class of 2014 as especially
accepting towards alternative
mindsets and divergent personalities.
For example, this year’s prom
queen, Lucy Kaplan, is not a
stereotypical prom queen; she
flaunts a half-shaved ginger
’fro, prefers her plethora of
freckles to a spray tan, and
sports a unique pair of cat-eye
glasses. The Class of 2014 realized that a real queen should
not be chosen based on her exterior beauty, but rather by her
authenticity and the warmth
of her heart. Therefore, they
chose Lucy as queen, and Lucy
is ever grateful to the senior
class.
She said, “I felt like I didn’t
have that many friends before
high school, but now the seniors have given me the freedom to talk to and befriend
people from any background
or any kind of group. It makes
me feel like our class is such a
special, special place.”
The Class of 2014 definitely
demonstrated their supportive
attitudes at the last pep rally
this year, where they cheered
on the freshmen and eventually rushed forward to combine
forces with them and jointly
win the spirit stick. It was a
good end to a vivacious four
years in the Nest. These seniors will undoubtedly spread
their wings and take off, flying
on to accomplish feats bigger
than St. Benedict itself.

My guess is at this time last
year, when Mr. Valadie penned
a brief message to the Class of
2013 seniors, you either didn’t
read it or, if you did, you certainly didn’t care. I understand
that. Soon, the days you have
been counting down will end.
There will be great celebration, and rightfully so. You’ve
earned the right to enjoy it.
But what you’ve also been
counting down is the end of
some very long and very good
friendships. When the procession exits graduation, never

to be a good student. Going to
college is a privilege--make
the most of it. There is nothing
to fear from embracing learning and acquiring wisdom.
Depending on which university you attend, there can
be several different ways of

For example, not too long
ago, I would have never envisioned myself on the school
newspaper staff. Even then,
I wouldn’t have necessarily
pictured myself becoming a
co-editor. Obviously, that’s not
the only “change” I’ve gone
through, but to list all of those
changes—the new friends
I’ve made, the new affinities I found, the new talents I
discovered—would be to turn
this editorial into part of my
autobiography.
But see, that’s the point. You
can change so, so much during
your high school years. And
you know what? That’s more
than okay; it’s supposed to
happen! Now is not the time to
set your life in stone. Now is
the time to be free, take your
hands off the steering wheel,
see where you end up, and go
from there.
And now I’d like to diverge
a little from my editorial and
use the last of my text space
to say a little something special to my friends. I know I always send you guys a general
Valogram each February, but,
considering it’s senior year,
I figured I might as well also
do something a little bit bigger, too. You all are some of
the most important people in
my life, and you changed my
life—and me, in general—
completely.
I hope you all know you
mean the world to me. Thank
you guys for being with me
through high school, no matter how I changed or how you
changed. I’ll miss you all a
lot—I’ll never forget any of
you, and I hope you’ll never
forget me. I love you.

college.
That conversation ended in
my mom threatening to duct
tape me to a kitchen chair
with nothing but college applications and a pencil. I then
threatened to eat the applications, never go to college, and
spend the rest of my days as a
train hobo. At that point, my
dear mother decided to give up
on me for the night.
Unfortunately for both of us,
we had that exact conversation
several times over the course
of this year. Fortunately,
though, my mom had a secret
weapon up her sleeve.
One night after another conversation ending with the
same adamant declaration that
I wasn’t going to college, she
silently left the room and returned with her phone in hand.
She simply handed it to me
and walked out.
On the line was my older
sister. I don’t remember how,
but she managed to convince
me all of the big decisions and
changes coming up weren’t so
bad after all. Senior year you
have a lot of people giving you
advice and telling you what
they think is right for you. My
sister told me to take their advice to heart but still make all
of my decisions for myself and
do what is right for me.
That night marked the end of

Finding my niche isn’t really
my niche.
I came into high school with
the misconception that these
four years are the time when
you find out who you’re supposed to be and where your
spot is in life—your niche.
And I thought that once you
discovered those two things,
they didn’t change. Your personality stayed the same, as
did your hobbies, interests,
and friends. Just like permanent labels.
But in reality, that’s not the
case.
The greatest lesson I’ve
learned in the past four years
is high school (and life) is not
about defining yourself. It is
about discovering your potential. You are not confined to
being one specific person—
you’re not even confined to
the exact same friend group
for four years.
The person I am today is not
the same person I was freshman year. In fact, I’m not the
same today as I was sophomore year or junior year, ei-

To be honest, I never thought
I would be writing this: my senior sign off, my last editorial,
the last thing I will ever write
for The Eagle’s Eye.
As with everything about senior year, it’s bittersweet. On
one hand, I’m sad to leave the
place I’ve made my home for
the past four years. On the other hand, I’ve definitely spent a
full four years at SBA, and I’m
ready for something new. I’m
ready for a change.
Change used to scare me. I
don’t mean the jingling coins
everyone has floating around
their wallet, either. I mean
change in the fullest sense of
that terrifying six-letter word.
At the beginning of the school
year, my mom told me I needed to start considering where I
wanted to go to college. I sim-

Saying “no” to the reality of goodbye
Kayla Wiliamson

No.
Just no.
No, I don’t want to accept
the reality that I will soon be
leaving the place where I’ve
spent the last eighteen years.
No, I don’t want to apply for
more scholarships, look at my
financial aid packages for the
umpteenth time, or discuss
how I’m going to avoid a strict
Ramen-and-tea diet. And no, I
don’t want to realize this is the
last editorial I’ll be writing for
my school newspaper. No.
What would I say yes to, then?
I say yes to laying in bed, eating chips, and re-watching
old episodes of Doctor Who. I
say yes to staying up all night
writing poetry which I’ll most
likely abhor the next day, yet I
still keep it anyway.
I say yes to laughing at how
my last sentence accidentally
rhymed while I was talking
about poetry, and how maybe
that’s some kind of twisted
pun. Or maybe not. My puns
are usually more like “I’m
done’s.”
In essence, I say yes to rejecting reality, procrastinating my
future, and pretending this is
not the end. Goodbyes are my
greatest fear, so I’m going to
avoid them and shield myself
from the impending hysterical misery by using frantic attempts at humor and repeated
uses of the word “no” whenever anyone brings up college.
Now, before you admonish
me for my naive methods of
coping, I fully understand how
terrible of a strategy this is.
It’s a horrible idea. It’s more
immature than “your mom”
jokes. It’s just going to make
me freak out even more when
the end does come.
So, yes, I do know these
things. But there’s nothing I
can do about it.
The problem is that I’m simply not ready. I may have spent
every second until now ruminating on how exhilarating it
will be to finally leave Memphis, but I forgot that leaving
Memphis also means leaving
the people I grew up with. I’ve
built my life around these people, and I don’t want to have
to tear it down and start anew,
even if it means finally following my dreams.
So, no, I’m not leaving yet.
Only when I am on my plane
to Boston, all my belongings
stuffed carelessly into suitcases, will I finally allow the reality of farewell to hit me.
than what tunes I’m listening
to.
Change is exciting and nerveracking at the same time. In
reality, change is all around
us, so there’s no need to fear,
right? As my father likes to tell
me, “The only thing constant
in life is change.”
As a senior looking back
on high school, I realize how
much I have changed because
of my experiences in high
school. The classes I took, the
teams I played for, and the
people I met all influenced
me in some way and helped to
create the person I am today.
To say the least, high school
did not go according to plan.
I thought I would play soccer
all four years and maybe even
play in college, but life has a
funny habit of not turning out
as we hope. In February of my
freshman year, I tore my ACL.
Suddenly, I could barely walk,
let alone run.
Nevertheless, my knee injury helped open my eyes to
new things. Sophomore year
I found myself trying out for
the swim team, where I met an
amazing group of teammates.
One thing led to another, and
by my senior year I was a
member of three SBA sports
teams.
My injury is what made me
recognize all the options my
high school had to offer me.
Learning to try new things is
one of the most valuable lessons St. Benedict taught me,
and it is a lesson I advise everyone to try.
Change happens every year
in high school, not just freshman year. Once you find your
friends, don’t confine yourself
to just that one group. Branch
out and meet someone new or
try to get to know someone
better each year. I didn’t even
meet one of my closest friends
until my sophomore geometry
class. I still think she is one of
the main reasons I passed that
class.
When choosing classes,
check out something a little
different. If you are interested
in art, but painting isn’t your
style, try photography or film.
I tried out newspaper for the
first time as a senior, and it
has honestly been one of my
favorite classes of my high
school career.
High school is a time for
learning--not only learning
about academics, but also
learning about yourself. What
are your strengths and weaknesses? What do you like to
do? Who do you like to spend
time with? As this school year
comes to a close, enjoy every
moment, because you will
never get another chance to be
where you are today.
ple who would eventually help
me learn more about myself. I
had never thought about being a writer before, but it was
the support of my friends and
family that pushed me to pursue what I now believe is my
true passion.
The concept of college is,
admittedly, a rather terrifying
thought for me, as it probably
is for a lot of people who are
going farther away than the
general vicinity of Memphis.
Will I meet new friends there?
Will I be able to handle myself
in difficult situations without
my parents’ guidance?
You never know what you’ll
discover about yourself in your
college years. I didn’t think
I could take someone on a
proper date before high school
rolled around, and now I’m in
a steady relationship. I had absolutely no faith in my cooking skills, and even though I
still can’t cook, I am actually
trying to learn. I would have
never expected that four years
ago.
My point is the future is unknown for a reason. The world
around us surprises us by constantly revealing new things
about ourselves and others.
You never know just what
you’re capable of until you try
it.
Does that mean you should
live college life recklessly?
Absolutely not. But don’t
be afraid to burst your own
bubble in order to truly experience the world around you.
Those same types of experiences we’ve had at this school
are waiting for us outside thse
walls. The only difference is
where we’ll be.
We’ve spent four incredible
years jumping around with our
wings outstretched, learning
how to fly. Now, after all our
efforts and practice, it is finally time to raise our heads high
and soar, as Buzz Lightyear
would say, “to infinity and beyond.”

While driving home last
week, a debate was going on
in my head. Senior superlatives were due the next day and
most of my blanks remained,
well, blank. I didn’t know who
to put down for “Most Likely
to Be a Beach Bum” or “Most
Likely to Marry a Pro Athlete,” and I figured those superlatives didn’t matter all that
much anyway.
There were some I did care
about, but I just couldn’t think
of the right person. I struggled
the most with “Most Changed
Since Freshmen Year.” I mean,
we all have changed since
freshmen year, but who has
changed the most?
With all this thinking about
“change,” my thoughts soon
turned to myself. How much
have I changed? Just by comparing my current iPod playlists to those of my freshman
year shows the difference. Today I was jamming out to Shakira in my car, but four years
ago I would have been in my
room rocking to “Best of Both
Worlds.” Now, a different kind
of change is on the horizon for
me, something much bigger

Change is inevitable.
You’ve heard it before from
countless cliché speakers, but
it really means something
when you think about your
high school experience. The
things I’ve done and the people I’ve met have all changed
how I see myself.
I would never have imagined
any of this occurring when
I first stepped through these
doors in August of 2010.
I was extremely shy back
then, not overly willing to
talk to anyone around me. I
wanted to remain in the background, like I always did; but
life told me “no.” I met new
people relatively quickly, peo-

New Zambezi exhibit
to open at Memphis Zoo
Bailey Coppedge
News Editor
The Memphis Zoo has
plans underway for the construction of a new hippo
exhibit named the Zambezi
River Hippo Camp. This
new exhibit will give the
hippos much needed space,
and it will feature an underwater viewing facility similar to the current one in the
polar bear exhibit.
The hippos in the Memphis
Zoo, Splish and Binti, are
long overdue for an exhibit
upgrade, as their current living quarters are cramped and
unnatural. The Zambezi exhibit will provide a healthier,
more natural environment.
The Memphis Zoo currently does not have a plan
for the old hippo exhibit once
the hippos move to Zambezi.
The most exciting part of
the new exhibit is the view
that has never been seen
before. The viewing facility will provide an exciting
new look at Splish and Binti
as viewers can observe their
previously unnoticed underwater habits. “Even though
they’re large, they’re pretty
agile,” said Laura Doty, the
zoo communications specialist.
Construction is scheduled
to begin within the next few
weeks, and the exhibit will
open in either late 2015 or
early 2016, depending on the
weather. At this time, “there
isn’t a plan to have an official
opening ceremony,” said Ms.
Doty.
When free associating with
the word “college,” most
people would fire off words
like “partying,” “freedom,”
“responsibility,” or “pizza.”
Most people remember college
as a relatively exciting time,
filled with experiences you
can’t have anywhere else. But
this kind of rosy retrospection
leaves out the parts of college
and young adult life which no
one wants to talk about: adrenaline-inducing situations.
College places adolescents,
who have little experience
with the “real world,” straight
from a somewhat-sheltered
high school environment into
a completely new situation
with no parents, little supervision, and unfamiliar circumstances. Though the concept
of “being free” is ideologically
enthralling, being alone in an
unfamiliar city can actually be
terrifying; you may find yourself stuck in a situation where
you or someone else is in potential danger, but you don’t
know what to do.
College parties are perfect
examples of situations that can
start out fun but can go downhill quickly. It’s no secret that
college parties involve alcohol, and many college students
may choose to drink underage.
The easy availability and
abundance of alcohol at college parties leads to many instances of alcohol poisoning.
Symptoms of alcohol poisoning include excessive vomiting, mental confusion, slow
or irregular breathing (fewer
than eight breaths per minute),
and low body temperatures,
according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism.
If you’re at a party and you
suspect someone has alcohol
poisoning, stay with them at
all times and remain calm. If
the person exhibits several of
the above symptoms, call 911.
While waiting for medical personnel, Mayo Clinic advises to
make sure the individual stays
on their side or upright; if they
pass out and lay on their back,
there’s a possibility they may
choke on their own vomit and
never regain consciousness.
Even if they become angry or
resist your efforts, they are at
a serious risk and you should
continue taking care of them.
After all, it’s better to have
them angrily alive than dead.
In addition, be careful when
walking home after those college parties. If possible, never
walk alone—the buddy system
they taught you in third grade
will always come in handy.
However, if you are forced
to walk by yourself, be cognizant of your surroundings:
keep your head up, act like
you know where you’re going
even if you don’t, maintain a
calm, confident exterior, and
stay out of dark or unpopulated areas, as advocated by the
Edmonton Police Service. The
more afraid, lost, and vulnerable you look, the more likely
you are to be attacked or harassed.
If someone still assaults or
harasses you despite these precautions, the most important
thing to remember is to channel your adrenaline towards
keeping a level head. When
in scary situations, a human’s
sympathetic nervous system
kicks in and causes quickened
reflexes, heightened awareness, and an increased heart
rate. Victims should utilize this
heightened state of consciousness to make swift, intelligent
decisions, such as yelling “call
911” rather than “help,” since
bystanders are more likely to
intervene when they perceive
a legitimate emergency.
Authorities suggest employing basic self-defense tactics:
stomp on the attacker’s foot
with your heel, gouge at the
attacker’s eyes with your fingers, kick their shins with your
whole foot, or slam your head
backwards into their face if
they grab you from behind.
All in all, remember to keep
your wits about you at college.
The “real world” is certainly
enticing, but it comes with
drastic consequences if you
don’t know how to handle being on your own. It’s highly
probable that a terrifying incident will occur in your college
years or during young adulthood, and everyone needs to
be prepared.

Water Polo
The SBA water polo team
has greatly improved since its
inaugural season last year, according to co-head coach Molly Pickering.
“It’s a whole lot better than
last year. The kids have been
much more confident in their
abilities,” she said.
The team started the season
off victorious after a hardfought 14-13 overtime matchup against St. George’s. Standout senior Brice Norris scored
six of the teams’ 14 goals and
led the team in scoring. In the
following match against MUS,
the Eagles fell short, with a six
point loss.
Next, the Eagles won another overtime thriller against
CBHS, 8-7. Freshman Ray
Wynne scored four goals,
while senior goalie Kyle Nestler racked up numerous saves,
helping to keep the team alive.
Kyle was the primary starter, while freshman Ian Blair
played backup. Ian plans to
take over as goalie next year.
SBA’s team consisted of ten
boys and ten girls. Juniors
Sarah Kutas, Allie Evans,
and Jessica O’Brien led the
girls while Brice, Ray, Garrett
Mitchell, Brett Wagner, Matthew Smith, and Matthew Barczak anchored the boys.
The Eagles used a man-toman defense, which made the
matches more competitive.
“It’s a fun game to watch,”
said Coach Pickering.
games included a win against
Briarcrest and two tough losses against CBHS.
During the first two losses
of the season, the Eagles were
shut out, 0-3 against CBHS,
and 0-1 against Bartlett. Although the offense was briefly
silenced, the defense has remained strong, led by seniors
Michael McGuire and Patrick Graham. Seniors Hunter
Story and AJ Sturdivant have
worked hard protecting the
goal as first-year members of
the team.
Rounding out the roster
is Michael Berra, the only
freshman on varsity, a team
that consists of nine seniors.
Johnny Aeschilman is also a
strong member representing
the sophomore class.
In an 8-1 victory against
Northpoint, senior Thomas
Gilman and junior Luke Parker
scored hat tricks (three goals),
while Austen Graves and Peter
Wagner each kicked in one.
Peter scored a hat trick
against Cordova, leading the
Eagles to a 5-0 victory.
Head coach Nick Dressman
believes the SBA soccer program is “back on the radar”
and “it’s not unrealistic to
make a run at State.”
The Eagles’ first playoff game
will take place on May 10.

The Eagles and Lady Eagles

SBA with a 96% win percentage and three consecutive individual region championships.
“Her game was already great
as a freshman. As a senior, it’s
beyond expectations,” said
Coach Hervey, reflecting on
Grace’s time at SBA.
The boys have “worked
hard, in spite of some tough
opponents,” said Coach Hervey. The team pulled off wins
against Arlington and Brighton. After winning a singles
match against St. George’s,
8-2, senior Henry Evetts said,
“I’m very happy about this

Many of the guys this season are new to the game. They
“only picked up a tennis racket
for the first time six months
ago,” said Coach Hervey.
The girls finished second in
the region, just behind Hutchison, and the boys finished
fourth.
Track and
Field
The SBA track and field team
competed in several multischool invitationals this year
including the Houston Track
Classic, the largest meet in the
state, with over 1,000 athletes
competing. Highlights included a first place win by the
4x800 team of seniors Mayson
Morrissett and Theresa Stoddard, sophomore Madeleine
Stanfield, and freshman Catherine May.
The excitement continued
as sophomore hurdler Courtney Parker and senior sprinter
Alex Rittman qualified for the
finals after winning the preliminary heats in their events. The
girls distance team of Mayson,
Theresa, Catherine and junior
Cara Carpenter also brought
home third place medals.
Another highlight of the season was the girls’ second place
finish at the Dyersburg Invitational. Standouts included
senior Brittany Phillips’ first
place finish in the shot put,
senior Sarah Brannon’s first
place in the discus, and other
top honors from the distance
team. For the boys, junior
Brad Reber took first in the
triple jump.
Overall, the team is looking
forward to the future, since
freshmen make up a majority
of the sprint team. Freshmen
sprinters Victoria Guffin, Avery Graziosi, Anna Schuman,
Brittany Tant, and Sam
Childers are busy learning
blocks and handoffs for competition in the relay events.
Freshmen Isabella Giddens
and Kamryn Carpenter are
beneficial members of the hurdling team.
Freshman distance runner
Ray Wynne is training hard
and recently ran under five
minutes in the 1600m race.
Head coach Dianna Cervetti
is excited about the progress
made by the team so far. “We
have a great coaching staff this
year. Plus, everyone is really
working hard on the relays
and their individual events,”
she said.
In addition to returning assistant coaches Janet Daleke
and Don Williams, three new
coaches joined the staff this
year. Haley Gilmore coaches
the sprinters, SBA Class of
‘10 alumna Meagan Nichols
coaches the hurdlers, and SBA
Class of ‘10 alumnus Peter
Armstrong works with the
pole vaulters.
The team will compete in
the Region Tournament in
mid-May with hopes of qualifying for the State Tournament
on May 22 and 23.
Trap
Shooting
The Wingmasters trap shooting season began in March
with the first shoot of the year.
“Conditions were tough,
although the Eagles emerged
unscathed and unfazed. Mother Nature could not thwart our
accuracy,” said head coach
Eric Wells. Coach Wells is assisted by Mr. Bret Bilbrey, Mr.
Tom Link, and Coach Caleb
Marcum.
The team’s top shooter, freshman Ivan Scheidhauer, finished third in the JV division
at the shoot. Junior Braxton
Brewster finished first in the
alternate division, and he was
surprised to hear the results. “I
didn’t think I got first when I
finished shooting,” he said.
The team consists of 16
members, including five girls
who have made “substantial
improvements,” according to
Coach Wells. The team is divided into various squads of
five, boys and girls included,
which then compete against
CBHS, MUS, SAA, FACS,
Arlington, Briarcrest, Tipton
County, and many other local
schools.
“Many of the perennial West
TN powerhouse teams have
noticed the Wingmasters’
prowess at the range,” said
Coach Wells.
The Wingmasters continue
to improve as the season progresses. “Everyone is getting
far more comfortable with
their guns. They’re out there
busting 100 caps a day,” said
Coach Wells.
At the second shoot of the
season, the Wingmasters’ first
team finished fifth out of 375
shooters. Freshman Annie
Longoria finished fourth out
of all JV girls, while Ivan finished first in the male division.

Student businesses encourage growth
Almost everyone has at least
one hobby or some kind of extracurricular activity, whether
it be playing videogames, jogging, or surfing Pinterest.
Some after-school activities,
like jobs or volunteer positions,
can be more beneficial to one’s
future and provide a variety of
skill sets and learning experiences. But what about going
one step further and running
your own business? While this
may seem like an uncommon
path to take, five SBA seniors
actually do.
“I’ve always liked to make
polymer clay sculptures in
my free time. Around fourth
or fifth grade, I started giving
them as gifts to teachers and
friends. I’ve continued doing
that now at SBA,” said senior
Luckie Krog. “Eventually I
had a sort-of revelation—put a
hook on a small sculpture, and
it becomes an earring!”
After making her first pairs
of earrings for Lucy Kaplan
(two sets of cheeseburgers and
two sets of fries), Luckie Krog
launched her earring-making
business called “Hook ‘Em,”
in February of this year. She
sells pre-made earrings out
of her backpack and online
at Storenvy.com, but she also
takes custom orders for “any
animal or inanimate object
people want.”
Joining Luckie’s ranks in the
SBA student business world
are veteran entrepreneurs
Lucy Kaplan, Hailey Warriner,
Ricky Graziosi, and Joseph
Pearlman, who have all been
running their businesses for
one year or more. Lucy sells
hand-embroidered and painted
patches, pins, barrettes, and
wall hangings through her
Tumblr-based shop named
shoplikls (formerly an Etsy
online store known as freshpoked).
Hailey, along with her
mother, sells personalized car
decals, etched glass, monogrammed headbands, and cup
holders through their business
Barbara’s Designs.
Ricky and Joseph cooperatively run J and R’s Cuts,
a contracted labor business
whose services include grass
cutting, landscaping, and
“anything you don’t want to
do.”
For Ricky and Joseph, J and
R’s Cuts is more than just a
simple pastime and way to
make money—it’s a solid step
into the direction of their future. The two plan to be roommates at the University of
Memphis, with Ricky majoring in computer science and
Joseph majoring in a businessrelated field. They hope to one
day combine their skills and
start another larger, more seri-
ous business together.
“Right now, J and R’s Cuts
is our stepping stone into the
world of business,” said Ricky.
“It’s like our learning process
for success.”
“We’d like to grow it through
college, start our careers, and
maybe even get it big enough
to sell one day,” said Joseph.
While Hailey’s, Lucy’s, and
Luckie’s student businesses
don’t necessarily pose quite
as great of a potential impact
on their futures, that doesn’t
mean they haven’t received
any benefits from them. All
three hope to continue supplementing their normal income
with profit from doing something they enjoy, but they
also feel as though they have
grown in responsibility and
maturity through their experiences, among other things.
“While Hook ‘Em is what’s
allowing me to go to prom, its
advantages definitely go beyond just profit. It forces me to
not come home and sleep every day, so I’ve become more
productive—it gives me a goal
and something to accomplish.
I’ve also learned the value of
a dollar through my experiences, and I actually spend
less money than I did before
I had this job,” said Luckie.
“Lastly, I think every bit of entrepreneurship experience I’ve
had in my life, including Hook
‘Em, is going to end up mak-
ing me a saleswoman. And
that’s good, because life is basically selling stuff, whether
it’s a product, or service, or

The annual Germantown
Charity Horse Show (GCHS)
will celebrate its 66th year
on June 3-7. Since its origin
in 1947, the horse show has
aimed to bring the community of Germantown and the
surrounding area together by
providing fun entertainment
while donating proceeds to a
local charity. The horse show
will feature jumpers, western
pleasure, saddlebreds, and
walking horses.
For the past 14 years, the
GCHS has donated its proceeds to the Memphis Exchange Club Family Center,
a charity whose mission is to
stop childhood abuse. The Ex-
change Club provides a safe
haven for children suffering
abuse at home while also offering programs to help both
children and adults gain support and knowledge on how
to handle difficult family situations.
With the generous donations
of the Germantown Charity Horse Show, the Exchange
Club is able to fund counseling and other programs for
children and families.
In order to host such a large
event, the horse show relies on
volunteer workers, namely the
Germantown Charity Horse
Show Princesses. The princesses are junior and senior
high school girls who have not
only maintained good academ-
ic standings but also are highly
active in extracurricular activities and community service.
The “Queen” of the royal court
is a college-age student who
has shown dedication to the
horse show and her academics.
This year, three SBA students
have been crowned “princesses” for the show. Juniors Ciscily Crislip and Lana Kabel and
senior Alanna Oliphant are
current members of the royal
court, along with 20 other girls
from across the Mid-South.
“My favorite part has been
making new friends. We had a
ball at the fashion show and it
has helped us grow closer together,” said Ciscily.
Throughout the months leading up to the horse show, the
princesses attend luncheons,
teas, and even participate in a
fashion show and royal ball,
complete with a white ball
gown and a tux-adorned date.
In order to understand what
the horse show is all about, the
princesses visit the Exchange
Club and interact with the children who have been subjected
to domestic violence.
“I’m really excited to work
with the kids at the Exchange
Club. I’m so thankful for this
opportunity to make a difference in our community and
meet new people while doing
it,” said Lana.
Working through the horse
show allows the princesses to
give back to their community.
“It is such a great way for
Germantown and Tennessee
to show how much our youth
cares about society and charity,” said Ciscily.
At the horse show the princesses will perform a variety
of jobs insuring the show will
run smoothly. Some jobs include helping to decorate the
Main Show Ring, presenting
ribbons and trophies to class
winners, and serving ice cream
cones to horse show spectators
and exhibitors. A few princesses will even participate in
the show as riders.
Senior Becca Siciliano was

Show princess in 2013. “It was

St. Benedict alumni return to the track
Alanna Oliphant
Features Editor
Most people never return to
high school after they’ve graduated. However, a handful of
alumni haved returned to SBA
as coaches, staff, or teachers.
As instructors, alumni are able
to give back to the school by
training current students in
athletics and the classroom.
This year the SBA track and
field team gained two new
coaches from the Class of
2010. Former 4x800 relay runner and record holder, Meagan Nichols, and former pole
vaulter and four-year cross
country runner, Peter Armstrong, were both welcomed to
the team.
Coach Nichols, a former track
and cross country athlete at the
University of Memphis, is an
assistant to the distance team
as well as the hurdles coach.

tion to completing an internship in the athletic department

Director, Mr. Steve Winnette.
“I wanted to come back because I strongly believe in
Coach Cervetti and her training. She influenced my whole
life, from the foods I eat to
my job as a journalist,” said
Coach Nichols.
Coach Armstrong returned
to SBA because of his opportunity to work as an intern. “I
decided to do it because I want
to eventually coach and teach.
SBA seemed like the best
place to start,” he said.
Although coaching can be
stressful, it is also rewarding
for both Coach Armstrong and
Coach Nichols.
“My favorite part about
coaching is seeing my athletes
progress from conditioning in
October to the races now. It’s
great to see all their hard work
pay off,” said Coach Nichols.
Coach Armstrong enjoys interacting with his athletes and
savors the experience he has
gained by coaching. “They
all have different personalities and are super cool kids.,”
he said. “It’s a learning experience, because you have to
learn when and how to push

them, which I sometimes do
too much of or not enough.”
However, although both
coaches spend many hours
with the team, coaching is
not their only pastime. Coach
Nichols still enjoys running,
and she participates in halfmarathons and local running
groups.
“I do some freelance writing
for the Memphis Flyer,” said
Coach Nichols. “I really like
to do food articles, although
I’ve written on a large range of
topics.”
While Coach Armstrong continues his education, he earns
extra cash by emceeing trivia
nights at a local club. He also
plays guitar and keyboard for
the band Spaceface.
As for being an athlete in college, Coach Nichols advises,
“You have to be prepared for
the time commitment and
learn to balance school, sports,
and travel.”
Student participates in sprint car racing
Savannah Boettcher
Sports Editor
Many SBA students participate in activities outside of
school such as ballet, theatre,
horseback riding, or multifarious sports. Junior Howard
Moore enjoys an exciting afterschool activity known as
sprint car racing.
Howard started off racing
dirt bikes and go-karts at a
young age. He then bought his
first go-kart, No. 23, when he
was eight. However, he only
started racing sprint cars last
year.
“I’ve been around cars my
whole life,” said Howard,
“and I like going fast.”

These next few years are
very important. You will be

on short dirt tracks. Sprint car
races typically include 24 cars
and range from 30 to 50 laps,
lasting approximately ten to
20 minutes.
Howard has raced in states
all over the South, including
Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and
Texas. Howard’s favorite track
can be found in Waco, Texas.
“I like Waco because the track
is only a quarter-mile,” he
said.
When in the car, Howard
enjoys being alone with his
thoughts and the roar of the
cars around him. There isn’t
a crew chief or spotter to assist him in navigating the dirt
track.
His No. 23 Engler Motors
Chevy with a Maxim Chassis gets up to 650 horsepower
and can reach 120 miles per
hour. Last November, Howard
earned $3,000 after winning at
Riverside Speedway in West
Memphis. While there, he also
won Rookie of the Year.
In the car, Howard is protected by no more than a helmet and a HANS (“Head and
Neck Safety”) device, which
stabilizes the neck.
In all of his time racing,
Howard has never suffered an
injury; however, he has been
involved in many wrecks,
including flipping over in a
mini-sprint.
The sprint car season lasts
from March until November,
the same time of year as NASCAR, a sport which, ironi-
cally, Howard is not a big fan.
However, he is quick to point
out that he is not opposed to
becoming a NASCAR driver
due to the great pay.
Howard races for the thrill of
going fast and the joy of winning. “My favorite part has to
be the adrenaline rush.”
This season, Howard hopes
to gain more experience while
adding wins to his resume.

Online deals help High school movies to watch

As senior year winds down,
many future college students will need to add to their
wardrobe since a high school
uniform will no longer be required. To save time and money, online shopping may be the
answer for stylish looks at an
affordable price.
A popular store for college
students is Forever 21. The
store tends to have the latest trends at incredibly cheap
prices. Shopping online at Forever21.com provides choices
that are most likely not featured in stores. The online
store also has other collections
to choose from such as Love
21 and a boys’ section that
features a wide variety of hip
clothing.
Senior Dacia Williams said,
“I love shopping at Forever
21, especially online, since I
feel like there are more options
available.”
Another online store that features attire for a college wardrobe is ASOS.com. ASOS is
a major online fashion brand
that sells both men’s and
women’s clothing. This store
recently launched their college
program, ASOS on Campus,
which gives college students
the opportunity to get 10 percent off their purchases. ASOS
on Campus also offers special
programs that give away free
merchandise and promotional
items each semester.
Urban Original, found at Urbanog.com, is another online
fashion store for women. Here,
shoppers can enjoy weekly
sales such as “buy one, get one
half off.” Urban Original offers popular styles and brands
that are often cheap, but still
good quality.
“I love the sales! I literally
buy all my shirts from Urbanog.com,” said MTSU senior Khloe Williams.
Unique ice cream
parlors sprinkle
Memphis with flavor
Lauren James
Reporter
Now that warmer weather
has finally arrived, dessert lovers can rejoice with a cold dish
of ice cream.
Memphis contains many offthe-wall ice cream places that
satisfy any sweet craving. For
example, Maggie Moo’s Ice
Cream and Treatery, a downtown shop, is a sugar paradise.
Upon walking inside, brightly colored walls and a friendly
staff greet customers.The store
offers everything from ice
cream cakes to “pizzas” made
with ice cream and icing.
They have an extensive list of
flavors and mix-ins to create
the perfect frozen treat.
Maggie Moo’s is open Mondays through Saturdays from
11 A.M. to 11 P.M. and Sundays from noon to 9 P.M.
Sheridan’s Frozen Custard
is another shop for those looking for a different twist on ice
cream. The shop offers a variety of treats, including sundaes, lattes, and other specials,
but their concrete custard remains the top seller.
Customers can pick from the
menu or build their own con-
crete concoction, using two
flavors of custard and their favorite toppings.
“What more is there in life
besides ice cream?” said sophomore Amanda Magusiak, a
frequent customer of Sheridan’s.
With locations at 6745 Stage
Road in Bartlett and 8075 Macon Rd in Cordova, Sheridan’s
is open Mondays through
Thursdays from 11 A.M. to 11
P.M., Fridays and Saturdays
from 11 A.M. to midnight,
and Sundays from 2 P.M. to 11
P.M.
La Michoacana, a small shop
located at 4091 Summer Avenue, is gaining attention from
ice cream lovers. Though they
serve other food, La Michoacana’s authentic Mexican ice
cream outshines the rest.
The flavors range from corn
and avocado to mint and vanilla, and they have everything
from popsicles to sundaes. La
Michoacana is open every day
from 1 P.M. to 9 P.M.
“La Michoacana changed my
life,” said senior Lucy Kaplan.
“Even the weird-sounding flavors are amazing! Plus, it’s super cheap.”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Charismatic and witty Ferris Bueller decides to play hooky from school along with his girlfriend, Sloan, and hypochondriac friend, Cameron. The trio borrows Cameron’s father’s Ferrari for a day out on the streets of Chicago just to “see something good today.” This movie
has got it all: an amazing cast, quick-witted dialogue, fast cars, Chicago scenes, and a script
you can quote for days. One of my all-time favorite high school movies. 4.8 out of 5 stars
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Charlie starts high school as a loner, but makes friends with
two seniors: Patrick, a popular homosexual boy, and Sam, an
attractive, free-spirited girl. Together, the trio attempts to handle
coming-of-age emotional troubles while listening to “good music” and performing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I highly
recommend reading the book before seeing the movie; however,
the acting by Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller
make you feel like you’ve known the characters your whole
life. 4.7 out of 5 stars
Grease
Greaser Danny Zuko falls in love with goody two-shoes Sandy over the summer, and the couple thinks they will never see
each other again when school starts. To their surprise, they are
enrolled in the same high school. Their love eventually overcomes the troubles caused by cliques through beautifully choreographed song and dance. Grease is a timeless classic filled
with catchy songs and controversial relationships that will
leave you wishing you were in high school during the 50’s.

10 Things I Hate About You
Cameron, the new kid at school, wants to date Bianca. However, she can’t, because her
sister Kat isn’t dating anyone. In an attempt to fix this situation, Cameron gets rich kid Joey
Donner, who also has a crush on Bianca, to pay mysterious and handsome Patrick Verona to
date Kat. At first Patrick and Kat hate each other, and Patrick is just doing it for the money,
but the two eventually grow to love each other. Starring Heath Ledger, Julie Stiles, and
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this Shakespeare-based movie is hilarious, romantic, and very enjoyable to watch. 4.3 out of 5 stars
Mean Girls
Raised in Africa, Cady Heron moves to the states to attend
high school. She makes friends with the popular girl clique
known as The Plastics, Janis Ian, an outcast and a bit of a
goth, and Damien, a hilarious and flamboyant boy. The story
revolves around Cady and her role in tearing apart The Plastics and almost the entire school. It’s one of the most hilarious
and quotable high school movies out there. 4.5 out of 5 stars
Clueless
The daughter of a litigator in L.A., Cher is a rich, popular, manipulative, and ditsy girl who
wants to get her driver’s license. She convinces her teachers to raise her grades, helps the
new girl to be popular, and finds love for her friends and herself. Cher’s narration throughout the movie is sidesplitting, and the overall plot is sweet and cute. 4.4 out of 5 stars
Napoleon Dynamite
Quirky Napoleon Dynamite helps his new friend, Pedro, get
elected as class president while dealing with his uncle, who
dreams of his glory days in high school football, and his 32year old brother, who still lives at home and “chats online with
babes all day.” The movie is peculiar, hysterical, and definitely
worth the watch. 4.2 out of 5 stars
Rebel Without a Cause
Jim Stark moves to a new town, befriends an emotionally troubled boy nicknamed Plato,
catches the eye of his neighbor, Judy, and proves to the cool kids he is not a “chicken.” This
film is filled with great 50’s clichés, including switchblade fights, drag racing, slicked-back
hair, and leather jackets. The movie not only focuses on teenagers and their problems, but
also on the shortcomings of the parents’ ability to guide them. It’s a classic high school film
everyone should see at least once. 4.3 out of 5 stars

Options available after graduation
Rachel Hofer
Co-Editor
Four years of maintaining
grades, balancing extracurriculars, and generally working
hard lead up to one daunting
decision: college.
For most people, this decision is a question of what
four-year college they should
attend and what their major
should be. However, the end
of high school doesn’t have to
mean the beginning of a fouryear bachelor degree program.
In fact, there are several posthigh school options that many
graduating students don’t even
consider.
One such option is the gap
year. A gap year simply means
taking a year between graduating high school and starting
college. This is an option students who would like to take a
break from traditional schooling before starting college
should consider.
Taking a gap year doesn’t
necessarily mean quitting
school and living on your parents’ couch for a year; there
are many ways to have a productive gap year. One way to
do this is by spending the year
working and saving money.
This is a realistic way to gain
work experience while raising
money to cover the costs of
college.
In addition to working, there
are many exchange programs
that allow students to spend a
year in a foreign nation before
going to college. Exchange
programs vary by what the student will be doing in another
country; some allow students
to spend a thirteenth year in
high school while others are
spent interning.
These programs also vary by
cost: some are completely paid
for by government funding or
private scholarships, while
others can be quite expensive.
Regardless of where a student wants to go, what they
want to do there, and how
much they are willing to pay,
there are hundreds of exchange
programs out there, and one is
bound to fit the bill.
Going to college also doesn’t
have to mean getting a fouryear degree. Many students
don’t give much thought to
two-year degrees, but they are
much less expensive to obtain
and can still be useful.
In addition to two-year degrees, many students don’t
consider the usefulness of taking summer courses online or
at community colleges. These
can be inexpensive ways to
get ahead on core requirements and can put you ahead
of schedule for graduating.

Sci-fi meets eyewear in new invention
Andrew Wadovick
Reporter
The world of sci-fi TV shows
and movies is coming to life,
thanks to the revolutionary
technology of Google’s latest
invention: Google Glass.
Google Glass was first introduced in 2011, when the company revealed its hands-free
smartphone-like device. It is
basically a pair of sunglasses
without the lens, with a small
computer chip screen implanted on the right side, where all
the information is displayed.
When you want to do something with the Glass, such as
take a picture, you simply say,
“Ok, Glass, take a picture.”
Immediately, the built-in camera will take a picture of what
it sees and even “ask” if you
want to share the photo with
your Facebook friends or contacts, all from the hands-free
glasses.
As with a smartphone, various kinds of applications can
be downloaded on the Glass.
To “google” something, simply say “Ok, Glass, google St.
Benedict High School.” Within nanoseconds, a thousand
and one Google results for the
school will flash before your
eyes.
In March of 2012, Google
began what they called the Explorer Program, where people
could sign up to begin beta
testing of the Glass with the
general public. However, the
price tag on this Explorer Program was $1,500, making it
not easily obtainable. Senior
Rachel Paduck responded to
this fee by asking, “Do they
think we’re made of money?”
Almost immediately, social
reactions rocked the world.
In February, a woman named
Sarah Slocum was wearing
Glass when she walked into
a bar in San Francisco. The
crowd began to ridicule her
for wearing Google Glass, and
when Slocum began to record
the insults thrown at her, a
man tore them from her face
and ran away. Though he later
photo provided by wearableworldnews.com
Google Glass, created by Google, represents a step forward in the world of technology. But many
people question whether or not the invention is an invasion of privacy in this era of social media.
returned the Glass, he managed to get the point across.
While the Glass does light up
when it is recording as a signal
to others, there is still a growing sense of privacy violation.
As an article in The New
Yorker put it, “We feel dehumanized when the other person’s gaze is mediated by a
data-generating device. We
want them to respond within
the same set of social and somatic cues that we have to
work with. A device that provides data is different from a
camera, which in ordinary use,
records only what our eyes
might see anyway.”
People feel that the Glass is
right out of the movie Terminator, turning the people in front
of you into blobs of data and
numbers. In fact, several bars
and businesses have banned
Glass on their premises, despite how the Glass lights up
whenever it is recording.
Like all new technologies,
it has its ups and downs. As a
whole, Gogle Glass represents
the next phase of technological innovation. It is a large
step forward, and many people
are concerned for the world’s
shrinking sense of privacy.
Director Review
Whedon woos audiences with clever projects
Jack Borg
Amanda Slade
From his cult classics Buffy
the Vampire Slayer and Dr.
Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog to
the box office record setting
movie, The Avengers, director
Joss Whedon has demonstrated a style reflecting his views
and ingenious creativity, while
remaining uninhibited by stereotypical Hollywood film
structures.
The main elements of his
style are cleverness and originality, as well as an affinity for
strong, female heroes.
Mr. Whedon is fond of variation. His works range from
comedic supervillian musicals
and superhero action flicks
to modern day, re-imagined
Shakespeare romances.
For each film project, Mr.
Whedon uses different tactics; no two works of his are
similar. He is not afraid to
break boundaries and overstep genres, nor is he afraid to
simply do what he wants to do
instead of complying with a
particular format.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along
Blog begins as not much more
than a simple, humorous film.
It remains that way for most
of its duration, but towards
the end, Mr. Whedon takes
Dr. Horrible beyond its genre,
suddenly and surprisingly giving the simple web-series a
more tragic depth.
Although Mr. Whedon dabbles in all genres, his science
fiction movies and TV shows,
such as Firefly, are out of this
world. Firefly brought the rugged feeling of the Wild West to
the edges of outer space. The
complex characters, charming
dialogue, and amazing storyline left fans begging for more
once the show was canceled,
which led to the wrap-up movie Serenity.
Mr. Whedon twists and turns
clichés and overused plots until they come together to create
an entirely new, never-beforeseen story, showcasing his inventive talent.
His tendency to use female
heroes—unlike many action
shows and films—is seen in
most of his works, including
Buffy, Dollhouse, The Avengers, Firefly, and Angel. In
productions like Angel and
Firefly, where a woman isn’t
necessarily the main character,
he puts extra focus on supporting female characters, often
giving them more depth than
he gives to male characters
who appear more frequently.
Joss Whedon is among one
of the few writers and directors who can create entire stories or add on to existing series
while still keeping them fresh,
entertaining, and true to their
roots. If you haven’t seen any
of the films he is involved in,
you’re missing out.

I feel so lucky to have been
able to work with this senior
class! You guys made such
an impact on me and this
school during your time here
and it will be very hard for
me to forget you all. I can’t
believe that your senior year
is already coming to an end
and it is going to be hard to
say goodbye to all of you.
Because of you all, my job
was gratifying everyday and
I looked forward to coming
to work. I truly hope all of
you can find that happiness
Coach Valle
in your future careers. Whether you were in my class, at the
basketball games, played in
the Talon League, won in the
Powderpuff game, or simply
introduced yourself to me, I
am grateful to have worked
with you and am a better person because of it.
As I look at the “Senior
Board” from time to time, I
am so excited to see all the
different places you will go.
That board is a statement to
the dedication that this class
possesses and I know I don’t
only speak for myself when I
say how proud I am to have
taught you. When I look at that
board I am also reminded of
how quiet things will be when
y’all leave. I won’t have any
random birthday shout outs,
or “It’s a girl” signs given to
me on a daily basis and my
blood pressure will probably
get back down to normal, but
this is all so bittersweet!
I will never forget Hunter
Story’s over-affectionate personality; Grey Peevey’s “leadership” at basketball games;
Brooke Deason’s laugh ruining every story she tried to
tell me; Elle Millburn’s antics,
EVERY SINGLE DAY; and
Katherine Camilleri and Jacob
Lawrence’s northern accents.
From my first day until this
moment, you guys have impressed and entertained me. I
will never forget your humor,
brilliance, open-mindedness,
and the overall respect you
guys have for each other.
I cannot wait to see what
paths you all take and I am
confident that you will all do
great, whatever you choose.
So remember, chase happiness, not wealth, and respect
others as well as yourselves.
Meet new people but never
forget the important ones and
always remember to “play
the game”, because it’s pretty
awesome most of the time!
I, ABBEY MCCRORY, of
clever mind and dancer body,
do herby leave the following:
Ethan McCrory: The Squeaker pie, Morning car rides DJed by you, Moms breakfast,
