Notes on Tonight’s Performance • Performing Ensembles: • Debut Strings | Beginning • Concert Orchestra | Intermediate • String & Symphony Orchestra | Advanced • Concert Theme: “Soundscapes” • Definition of Soundscape: (1) a piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds; (2) the sounds heard in, and attributed to, a particular location, when considered as a whole • Tonight, each group will perform at least one programmatic work that contributes to the overall theme of the concert Tonight’s Featured Composer • Aaron Copland (1900 – 1990) • Featured Compositions: Appalachian Spring (Excerpts, 1944/1945) & Hoe-Down, from Rodeo (1942) • Aaron Copland is one of the preeminent American composers of the 20th century. His works helped define the ‘American’ compositional style are are intended to be widely accessible to audiences. • His desire to write music for the ‘common man’ was inspired by the 33rd Vice President of the United States, Mr. Henry Wallace, who notably in public speech referred to the coming ‘century of the common man’. • Copland’s iconic Fanfare for the Common Man was composed with this line of thinking in mind. Appalachian Spring (1944/1945) • Commissioned by Martha Graham for her ballet company. The working title for the composition was, in fact, Ballet for Martha. • The composition was also inspired by the following poem, written by 20th century American poet Hart Crane (1899 – 1932). “O Appalachian Spring! I gained the ledge; Steep, inaccessible smile that eastward bends And northward reaches in that violet wedge Of Adirondacks!” • Mr. Copland was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music in recognition of the work. Hoe-Down, from Rodeo (1942) • Like Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland’s Rodeo is also a ballet score. • The score contains five sections, of which, the fifth, Hoe-Down, will be performed tonight. • The main theme in Hoe-Down is heavily influenced by a variety of fiddle tunes, including William Stepp’s Bonyparte.
