Stronghold Cambodia n November 5, 1959, John Michael Moore was born the fifth child to William W. Moore and Mary H. nee Hitzemann of Raytown, MO. On the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 1959 John Michael entered the Kingdom of God and was adopted by the Father as His own beloved through the waters of Holy Baptism with “Mike” Marinus and Claire van der Linde chosen as sponsors/godparents. n April 7, 1974, two weeks after John’s grandfather Ernst Hitzemann went home to be with the Lord, John was confirmed in the Christian faith, receiving the verse: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Josh 1:9 KJV) n the Spring of 1979, as Trinity Lutheran Church, a mission congregation in Kearney, Mo installed their first pastor, the Rev. Dirk van der Linde. God then reminded John of the calling He had put on his life to follow Jesus into the ministry. The Lord used John’s roommate, Scott Adams (whose mother was of Mormon background and father was of Jehovah’s Witness background) to stop and listen to the Lord, repent and believe his word, and act in faith. That Saturday John sat down with his parents to inform them he wanted to become a pastor. John was attending William Jewell College, a Baptist school at the time, so Mary wanted to know, “Baptist or Lutheran?”. he next fall John enrolled at Concordia Teacher’s College (now University) in Seward, NE and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1982. That summer of 1982, before enrolling at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, John’s mother was diagnosed with inoperable colon cancer. Though she would live only a few months more, she declared this to be “the best summer of my life.” On Saint Nicholas Day, John assisted Pastor van der Linde for the first time in serving Holy Communion. John was the last person to serve Mary the Body and Blood of Jesus on this earth. In August of 1984 John began his vicarage (internship) year at Baltimore Urban Ministry Coalition, serving at Redeemer LC under Rev. Vernon Schultheis and at St. Thomas LC under Rev. Charles Wildner. n April of 1986, John received the call become pastor of Dr. Martin Luther Ev. LC of the SELC District (formerly the Slovak I T J u l y C h r o n i c l e r 2 I Ev. Lutheran Church). On July 6, John Hus Day (the day John Hus was burned as a heretic for doing and saying the same things Martin Luther did and said in Germany 100 years later). John was ordained into the pastoral ministry by Rev. Dirk van der Linde, with the Rev. Clem Mehl (the pastor who baptized and confirmed John) serving as lector. That same fall, on All Saints Day, November 2, John met his future wife at Redeemer LC when John filled the pulpit for Karen’s pastor while he was away. Six months later, May 2, they were united in marriage. They were blessed with a daughter Kailey on the Wednesday of Holy Week (Thank God she arrived then! She was due Easter Sunday!!). On April Fools Day 1990, John was installed as pastor of Our Savior LC, Cedar Lake, IN with the appointed text from 1 Corinthians 1 where Paul calls us all fools for Christ. On November 12, 1992 Ian was born to John and Karen, entering the Kingdom of God on the Third Sunday of Advent. On September 14, 1997, The Feast of St. Luke the Physician, John was installed as Associate Pastor of Grace LC, Waterloo, IA. John served the people of Grace, alongside Rev. Randolph McHone. On August 11, 2002, John was installed as only the third pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Newton, Iowa, following in his cousin Karen Eggerding Brelje’s footsteps (John’s great uncle Albert Hitzemann was Karen’s grandfather). John has served as pastor of OSL for the past 14 years. God's Plan of Salvation - The Ulitmate GPS! Co-chairmen Melanie Maddick (State Center) and Julia Dlouhy worked with the ladies of Marshalltown Zone and the Iowa East district board steering committee to host the 38th biennial Iowa East District convention, at William Penn University, Oskaloosa, IA on June 17 and 18. Registration figures reported 219 LWML ladies, pastors, and guests attended each day of the Friday/Saturday event. Representing OSL LWML Faith Society, Pat Shelton and Deanna Ihde served as Faith Society voting delegates. The Friday night banquet and keynote speaker was preceded with an extra special dose of fun, with our very own Randy Ervin hosting a game for the group, called “Taylor Swift or Lamentations?” Several members of Our Savior attended one or both days of convention: Peggy Gerdts, Mary Ervin, Shirley Suckow, Pat Shelton, Deanna Ihde, Dianne Breckenridge. Plus Carole Zimmermann and Jan Tolson were able to attend the banquet program, as escorted to Oskaloosa by Ron Dlouhy, Gary Gerdts, and Randy Ervin. A special thank you to Beth Tepe, for sharing her artistic talents in designing the convention banner, which coordinated beautifully with the printed GPS theme logo, as designed by Jon Dlouhy. This was truly a God-planned event – and He offered several remarkable points during the two-year planning and preparation to unfailingly remind us all to TRUST in Him to provide a convention that would be to His glory and for His purpose. God’s Plan for Salvation For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
