Hospice was a major priority for the tennis community the weekend of Feb. 22 and 23. Once again, the pros arrived for the 28th Annual Treasure Coast Hospice Pro/Am tennis event. The women played with the pros on Saturday and the men played on Sunday. Amateur women Liz Borrelli, Cindy Martinello, Barbara Travers and Belen Martinez-Serraro, finished first with a four-way tie. Winning first place for the amateur men was John Valek and taking second was Rod Lechtenberger. The pros took to the courts Saturday afternoon for the playoffs. A packed crowd was on hand to witness the finals between Kirk Jacobson/Ronnie Hulewitz and Michael Phelipa/Nick Steffen, with Jacobson/Hulewitz winning in two sets. On hand to add to the festivities was an outdoor food and refreshment stand, raffles, 50/50, a clothing boutique, music, gelato and on Saturday, a putting green contest. Team Pryce carded a net score of 48.6 to take the 2014 crown. Twenty-two teams competed in this 2 person team format. Handicaps were computed by totaling the teams’ Ocean Village handicap and multiplying by 60%. The results of the day are listed on the 18 holes Couples Championship scoreboard. Manager’s Corner Norm Spector General Manager This past month has been a very busy time here at Ocean Village! Not only are we at full occupancy, but we have been blessed with exceptionally beautiful weather for the past couple of weeks. Several events have taken place in the month of February here at Ocean Village. Mike Cleminson and his army of volunteers once again held the Special Olympics on Saturday, Feb. 15 and again it was a rousing success. The participants had a great time, as well as the volunteers who made sure the day was memorable! Feb. 17 was the Annual Hospice Golf Tournament and Beth Cecil and her staff were blessed with good weather and the turnout was exceptional. Thank you, Beth, for your efforts in assuring this event is a success every year! The weekend of Feb. 22 and 23 was the Pro Am Tennis Tournament and fundraiser here at Ocean Village and I have been told it may have been the best turnout yet in the storied history of this event. Emile deCuba, Bobbie Burbank, Barbara McArthur, Barbara Beatty, Charis Melillo, Phil MacAllister, Dave Clewell, Ursula Busch, Lynn Payne, and Beth Cecil went above and beyond to ensure the event was a success. All other volunteers I may have missed deserve a huge “thank you” for your efforts in making the event successful, including the onsite grounds maintenance and building maintenance staffs. It has been brought to my attention The group meets each Monday evening at the OV Clubhouse at 6:30 PM. It is a friendly game and all are welcome. Our consultant is addressing these damaged areas brought on by a combination of inclement weather conditions in January and now that we are receiving warm, sunny weather, the treatments to the greens should begin to stimulate new growth and return the areas to the condition they were in at the end of 2013. This is a priority and Jason Colville, our golf course superintendent, is working hard around the clock to get this done as soon as possible. Thanks for your continued patience and I hope you are enjoying your season here at Ocean Village! THE INN AT OCEAN VILLAGE AND THE TIKI BAR From time to time, the POA Board of Directors, both collectively and individually, receive inquiries, comments, and suggestions pertaining to the operation of the restaurant and the Tiki bar. Both facilities are leased to and operated by Mark and Theresa Zollo. The POA and the administrative staff have no involvement in the operation of either facility. Sort of like a tennis set when, after being ahead 51, everything seems to fall apart and you lose 7-5. We had a day like that not long ago. It started out to be a pretty normal, happy day. We had just returned to Ocean Village after an eight month absence. We reveled in the sunshine that had been missing up north for several weeks. The grounds in the Village were a joy to behold, colorful hibiscus nodding at us as we toured the campus. We unpacked in our gypsy-like way, with many bags and packages, loose garments overflowing in our arms. As always, we had brought down way too much, but in true woman fashion I hated leaving perfectly good clothes behind, in case I might need them. Husbands don’t seem to understand that we need “options” in our wardrobe. Once we had settled in, it was time to alert the world of our safe arrival. Library news Thanks for all the library donations. The library is a very fun place. Readers are enjoying the Wall Street Journal (a donation), working at the puzzle table, and selecting books to read. Without your generous donations, none of this would be possible. Thank you! Because of the poor rate of Miraculously, the computers connected to the Internet immediately, unlike in previous years when we had had problems remembering our passwords. Feeling in a positive electronic/technical mode, my husband decided to replace our broken DVD player with a new one we had brought down. After fiddling with wires and plugs of different colors, he announced he was ready to play a DVD. There was a serious problem, however, since all that played was sound, not picture. When I questioned whether he had possibly inserted a CD, not a DVD, he responded in true male fashion that I had posed the most ridiculous question he could ever imagine. A few minutes later, however, he realized that he had indeed inserted the sound track to a movie, not the movie. Somewhat humbled by his mistake, he turned to the bikes to see how they had fared during our absence. The challenge was for both of us to remember the combinations to the locks. We decided that would have to wait another day in hopes that we would be able to jog our memory. In the meantime, return, CD audio books may now be signed out at Recreation. Directions for the sign outs and a list of recordings will be on the library bulletin board. Please remember to return all library materials when you are finished so others may enjoy them. Thanks! SERVING OCEAN VILLAGE SINCE 1975 WATER HEATER SPECIALIST REPAIR EXPERT 35 YEARS LOCAL EXPERIENCE INC. PAUL FITZPATRICK PLUMBING 772.579.0133 or 772.489.0668 License # CFC033815 Paul Fitzpatrick MY STUFF we would do our grocery shopping and get to the liquor store. It was by then late in the day, and our cupboards were bare. A couple of unsettling events took place at the shopping center, starting with the loss of my husband’s wallet in the liquor store. Thankfully, an honest customer retrieved it from the floor where it had fallen, but my husband was understandably stressed. While he was checking out our groceries, I went to the car to phone the Chinese restaurant for a take-out. It was too late to cook, and we were too tired to eat out. I knew the combination of the long drive, the unpacking, the DVD player, the locked bicycles and the lost wallet had taken its toll when he told me he had wheeled the groceries to somebody else’s car, which was identical to ours but empty. He was rattled by that mistake, I could tell. However, after we arrived home he gallantly offered to unpack the groceries. I welcomed his offer since we had done a large shopping. The next morning I went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Not find- Seaword 3 ing the eggs, I asked if he had remembered unpacking them. “I put them on Priscilla Oehl the shelf of the [email protected] refrigerator door, “he replied. Only it was the wrong shelf on the wrong door, I realized when I opened the freezer. Frozen eggs were a challenge, but I found a way to use them and breakfast was a success. A friend recently sent me a book of “500 Senior Moments.” I think I could write my own. P.S. When I showed my husband a draft of this column, he laughed and asked a bit sheepishly, “Do you REALLY have to submit this?” In his defense, he is very talented, organized, capable and ingenious in many ways. But guess where I found the spinach? Uh-oh. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Remember to Walk Against Traffic and Bike with Traffic Flow! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Beachtree II happenings 4 Seaword ROB’S HAIR CARE A FULL SERVICE SALON & TANNING (772) 465-4330 License # MM 18076 1013 Seaway Drive, South Beach, Fort Pierce, FL 34949 CHANGE YOUR WATER....CHANGE YOUR LIFE! The season is upon us. Every pool, tennis court, golf course, bocce court, pickleball court, and shuffleboard court is filled to capacity. Ain’t life grand! Not many couch potatoes in our Village. We have welcomed some new guests and we will be saying our goodbyes to Bill and Mary Ellen (Mango) Weiss who left for St. Louis. We have a new owner in the 6100 building, Mathieu Huet and Charlene Gilbert. And there are pending sales on two other units. So our cluster changes each year. We wish our new owners much joy in joining our merry and busy cluster. At last, a Beachtree II Party sponsored by Pat Hurley, Brenda Meeke, Bobbi Cattanach and Elizabeth Pereira in the OV Clubhouse on Saturday, March 15 at 5:30 PM. All owners and guests are invited. B.Y.O.B. and a dish for all to share is your admission. Let’s make it a good one. Our thanks to Diane Seymour, who has volunteered to chair the Hospice Fund Drive for BT II. She takes over from Loretta Fish, who has done this job for many years. Please return your envelop to Diane and be as generous as you can afford to be. Many of our residents have used this facility and their families have been comforted by their service. Many thanks Loretta for all her years of service to this fund drive. The BOD met on Feb. 25 in the Aruba Center. The board approved an annual termite inspection and guarantee, and the stump grinding of the Traveler’s Palm. A discussion of the needed worked on the 6400 first level floor project led to the decision that we will have non-skid tile samples brought in for the next meeting to determine whether the project can be accomplished. We will have all of the sidewalks power washed for $894.75 and will get an estimate for cleaning the stairwells. Yellow tape or paint will be applied to uneven areas of the community. Jim Seymour reported that the railings repair is on hold until most residents leave for the summer. Next building scheduled is the 6100 building for soffit and fascia repair sometime in April. The fire alarm system was inspected and we are in compliance. Please remember that open flames, propane gas storage or charcoal grills cannot be used near any building. And, as a reminder, no bicycle storage under stairwells or in hallways. We bring to your attention these procedures at the request of the fire marshall and for the safety of our residents. Remember to turn your clocks ahead (Spring forward) on March 9. More daylight for us to enjoy! Spring officially begins March 20, but we enjoy summer here year round. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Joan M. Smith Pick up your feet and don’t fall off the pot We have written about my broken foot episode. It seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. After nearly three months, my foot is still somewhat swollen and continues to hurt. I am able to move about and do the things I want, although it hurts. The pain causes me to reiterate: we no longer lift our feet as high as we once did, which puts us in peril. I used to enjoy watching Tim Conway portray a little old man that dramatically shuffled his feet as he walked. I laughed and laughed; now it is me. Not only can I not run the hurdles, they have been replaced in my life by throw rugs and thresholds. Recognize the “shuffle” is no longer a dance; it is how we walk. Depressing, isn’t it? This is probably why I spend time in the pool. You can’t see me shuffle. Due to my difficulty in moving about in the bathroom and shower, while I could not put weight on my foot, we had to make changes to our bathroom. We added “grab bars” both beside the toilet and in the shower. Even when you are not recovering from an injury, it makes the bathroom safer. We attended a lecture in Vero and the speaker indicated the most dangerous room in the house was the Cameron Contracting Inc. Turn Key Rental Rehabilitation No job is too small! Knowing this information, it should have caused us to install “grab bars” prior to the accident;, just to be safe. For less than $250, our bathroom is safer today. Finally the glorious day arrives when once again we are on our feet. Believing this could never happen again, we get rid of our “assistance equipment": shower chair, etc. Then a year later, your spouse falls and you have to purchase the same equipment all over again. Earlier we replaced our toilets with ADA approved units, which are 2 inches taller than a conventional toilet. We replaced them due to a cost savings campaign in our cluster because they help save water usage. You wouldn’t think two inches would make much difference. Now when using a conventional toilet, it feels like you are going to fall before you hit the seat. The taller toilet is easier on your legs and back and requires much less water per flush; a good move for the environment and the wallet. The other day I was pulling out of our complex, turning right toward the Aruba Center. I thought I looked to Seaword 5 my left for traffic before going. I then pulled directly in front of a car which thankfully missed me. Last month we were sideswiped from the left. We were Eric Naegler and approaching a left Ann Naegler Cat II turn lane and the through lanes were backed up a long distance. Many of us are accustomed to pulling into the left turn lane before we actually get to the lane. You know, pull into the area with yellow cross marks immediately before the turn lane. I thought I looked to my left but apparently missed a car in my blind spot. When the officer arrived, he explained that neither one of us belonged in that particular area. We were both wrong. We each could get a ticket or just exchange information. This was an easy decision. Beware of thinking accidents can never happen again. A goal is to not die from a preventable accident. Life is simple. Pick up your feet, look to the left, and don’t fall off the pot! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * All copy for The Seaword must be received in the Administration Office by the 25th of each month. We are seeing more Pelicans and shore birds diving into our surf going after baitfish migrating down our coast. Seeing this will perk up any shore fisherman...knowing that larger game fish are sure to follow. Along this line, we are beginning to see some nice fish being caught. It's amazing what one can learn by talking to people at our Tiki Bar. Last week I ran into a person I had never met before...Leon Pernice. Leon was showing some folks at the Tiki some phone pictures of fish he recently caught. My ears perked up, and when I asked to see his pictures, I thought , “Wow!” Boomer would get excited to see these monsters! As it turns out, Leon and his brother Dave come down from West Spring-field, Mass. to visit their dad, Leon , Sr., who owns a unit in Capstan. All these guys run a family business back home...Leon Pernice & Assoc. They are commercial architects. While Leon, Sr., an 85-year-old tennis player who loves tennis...fishing is where his heart is...and so are his sons, Leon and David. I might add...not only their heart...but also their "GUTS!" They take out an 18' Robalo (a great boat) to the Gulfstream...a good 12 to 15 miles offshore and really HAVE SOME FUN!!! These guys are TRUE SPORTSMEN...beyond the excitement of "Deep Blue" ocean fishing. Remember...just catch 'em! This year’s theme was “Golf is Fore the Birdies.” Because of the thorough planning by tournament coordinator, Linda Ferrari, the event was a huge success. Residents Cathy Cain ,Mary Duckworth and team finished the step aside scramble with a four under par 50 to lead the 10 team field. Following golf, the ladies were treated to a luncheon of delicious sandwiches and salads catered by Toujays and served in an environ ment of birds carried over theme to the room. Valentine’s Day Round Robin 2014 AWOL Dave and Nancy Clewell at Valentine Round Robin Another month has gone by and more from the AWOL girls. As we always say, AWOL is a group that meets every week at Aruba in Ocean Village every Monday at 4 PM. Any single, widowed or divorced woman is encouraged to come to the meetings. We do a lot of charity work in and around the area and, after the meetings, we go out to The Inn and have a bite to eat. So, come one and all, and be a part of this fun group. We would Relaxing at the tennis Valentine Round Robin like to welcome back all the members and others that went on the AWOL sponsored cruise. They all said it was a fun time. The seas were calm, the food was good and no one got sick, so a good time was had by all! We had another nice birthday party for the month of February. We would like to thank the whole committee for putting on a wonderful meal and party. The party was a nice catered BBQ dinner and was enjoyed by all. This February birthday celebrants (L-R) Clare Rawe, Elaine Petropoulos and FLorence Martinelli. Pat Poggi and Bob Zurfluh, King and Queen of the Courts. month, we had a special birthday to celebrate; it was our oldest member’s special day. Florence Martinelli celebrated her 96th birthday. She has been coming to Ocean Village for about 25 years. First as a snow bird, and then when her husband passed, she became a full time resident of Florida. She enjoys living at Ocean Village and remains very active. She states she is looking forward to many more good and healthy years here in Ocean Village. March will have some events, one of which will be the AWOL sale on the 8th and the fashion show later in the month; do come out and support them. Again, anyone wishing to join AWOL, just come on over Monday at 4 PM at the Aruba Center. As we always end our newsletter, we say, “Stay healthy and keep active and continue to enjoy the campus we call Ocean Village.” Joan Martinelli Bocce news By the time you read this, our winter bocce league will be almost over. Where did the Season go? It’s been a fun year, even though we had to fight many rainouts and makeup games; but, we’ve made it to the home stretch. On February 15th, the Ocean Village bocce recreational area was alive with people playing bocce, shuffleboard, basketball and riding to the golf green for a putting contest. We were visited by more than 40 special athletes and their volunteers from the St. Lucie County Special Olympics. This has become an annual visit and an event that these special athletes consider the highlight of their year. They especially enjoy the pizza party following the morning of sports events. Each athlete also received an “OV special Olympics” hat. The bocce committee again thanks Mike Cleminson, our project coordinator, his committee members, all of the volunteers who helped with the arrangements, and all Seaword the members of the audience who cheered and encouraged our visitors. Many of our volunteers commented on what a rewarding endeavor this is and a time to forget our own age-related problems. Soon we will begin our championship playoffs on the way to crowning our 2014 bocce champions. Teams that believe they may be in the playoffs should plan now to keep the following dates free. Round #1: Our season ends after the league games on Thursday morning, March 13th. We will determine the division winners (6) and the wildcard teams (2) and post the pairing on the bocce board and will call each team captain. Team captains should contact each other to schedule a time to play the first game. All first round games must be played by Monday afternoon, March 17th. Check with Recreation to schedule your game time. 15 Semi-final games will be played on Tuesday, March 18th at 9 AM and 10:15 on court A. Championship game will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, March 19th on court B. Our bocce luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 20th at 12 noon at The Inn. As we wrap up our league play for this season, I ask each player to say “thank you” to Mary and her staff for their dedicated effort during the season. We take granted that the balls will be ready, the score sheets will be there, the dew will be wiped from the benches, etc. but these things don’t just happen. Let the staff know you appreciate what they do for us. If you are not bocce players, come out and watch. I think you will enjoy it . . . maybe even play next year. Stoley speaks on Zapruder movie 16 Seaword Richard (Dick) B. Stoley will speak at The Inn at Ocean Village at 3 PM Friday, March 14. Dick’s primary subject is his acquisition of the Kennedy Assassination home movie from the photographer, Abraham Zapruder. As past editor of both Life and People magazines, Dick will take time to answer questions from his audience. Born in Pekin, Illinois and a Northwestern journalism graduate, Dick’s career with Time, Inc. provides him with an abundance of interesting experiences. His twin brother’s widow, Maggie Stoley, winters here at Ocean Village. Dick currently serves as senior editor advisor for Time, Inc. His home is in Santa Fe, N.M. For the birds On the morning of Feb. 13, my wife, Mary, observed a Great Blue Heron standing near some shrubs just off the 5th green opposite our condo. Later that afternoon, it still had not moved and we saw it try to take a step and almost fall over. We called Security and two people came immediately to check the situation. After a brief observation, they left and returned with a beach towel, following the heron into some shrub growth and gently wrapped it in the towel and took it to the maintenance building. There, they contacted the “Crea-ture Safe Place” wildlife conservancy just west of Ft. Pierce. Their personnel came to collect the heron, diagnosing it as suffering from a “botulism” type of infection and administered antibiotics. As the temperature that night fell into the 40’s, the people treating the heron said it would not have survived the night in the condition it was in. About a week later, the heron was back in good health and was returned to one of the lagoons in the area, where it soon took flight. Thanks to the quick action of Jeff Moore (known as the Bird Man of Ocean Village) from maintenance who knew who to contact to help this sick bird ,and Tom Alexander in Security, it will now grace the skies above our area once again. A “feel good” story! Thanks, Jeff and Tom. Norm Dykstra About the cook... Mary Lee Kuchta wanted to share this recipe with OV. It is delicious, quick and easy. Mary Lee and her husband are long time residents, married for “eons” and untiring volunteers in their Cat II cluster. Mary Lee Kuchta Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts Cook over medium heat: 8 oz. maple bacon until crispy, about 8 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour off all but 3 T. of bacon fat (if not enough, add canola oil). Add: 2 lbs. Brussels sprouts and cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour in: ½ C. heavy cream; reduce by half, about 3 mins. Stir in: ¼ C. pure Maple syrup, bacon, salt and pepper. Cook 2 more minutes, until sprouts are tender and sauce has thickened. DID YOU KNOW? GOLF TIPS PHYSICAL FITNESS • Be sure to stretch before and throughout the game. • At the gym, practice moves that imitate golf movements. • Keeping physically fit will improve your power. MENTAL FITNESS • Try keeping a journal of your progress when trying to improve your game. • Set goals and realistic expectations. DRIVING • Keep your feet shoulder width apart. • Play the ball off the inside of your front heel. • Grip pressure should be light. • Swing through the ball, not at the ball. SHORT GAME • Chip and run when the ball is close to the green and does not need to be elevated to get to the hole. • Pitch the ball when you need to get around bunkers, mounds, the rough, or water hazards. PUTTING • Choose a putter with a distinct target line marked on it. Practice with a chalk line going the entire length from the cup to the putter. • Keep your hand pressure light and constant through the end of the stroke. BUNKER GAME • Don’t focus on actually hitting the ball. • Aim the club face at the target. This will increase the loft. • Have the club enter the sand, following your bodyline. POA UPDATE Organizational Meeting Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 The newly elected Board of Directors met in the Aruba Center to elect officers and directors for the coming year. Results of the election are as follows: Ted Crowley, president; Jack Craig, vice president; Joan Smith, treasurer; Kay Snodgrass, secretary and Barbara Burns, Alicemarie Donohue and Eric Naegler, directors-at-large. Regular Monthly Workshop Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 President Ted Crowley called the meeting to order at 2 PM in the Aruba Center. All members were present with the exception of Kay Snodgrass due to previous travel plans. General Manager Norm Spector submitted the following report: PROJECTS COMPLETED SINCE LAST WORKSHOP The camcorder in the OVC has been replaced and we now can record BOD meetings and the ability to integrate with Channel 63. All signage has been installed and we are now completely in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Five “Pet Waste Pick Up” signs have been installed on POA property, in hopes of encouraging our residents to pick up and dispose of all pet waste throughout the property. As recommended by one of our residents at the January workshop, barriers which identify where the lagoon along Windward Drive begins and the road ends have now been installed permanently to insure all residents are aware of this lagoon on the right of the #3 tee in the event of future flooding. Finally, all fire extinguishers on POA property have been inspected, recharged when necessary and re-certified by Fire Equipment Services of Florida. STATUS OF PROJECTS IN PROGRESS: At last month’s workshop, it was reported that Fast Dry Courts was working on a solution to the erosion problem experienced in January on the soft tennis courts when the property received 11” of rain. I spoke to Frank Froehling and he is having his engineers take a look at the situation before he recommends a long term solution which I expect to have in the very near future and which will be made available to the Board upon its receipt. Complete Access Control is still working on the installation of the two license plate capture cameras for the main entrance/exit and the Blue Heron entrance/exit; the system should be completely installed soon.
