The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar. Prices at most hotels/resorts
(spa, gift shop, tour desk, etc.) and shops frequented by travelers are often
expressed is United States dollars (US). Some shops frequented mainly by Jamaicans
set prices in Jamaican dollars and will NOT accept any foreign currency.
Electricity
The electricity is 110 volts AC, as it is in the continental United States and Canada.
Health
Medical facilities on the island are not always up to par with European or American
health care standards. Falling ill can sometimes result in major medical fees.
Therefore, it is advised to buy travel insurance, as this will ensure peace of mind in
emergency situations.
Language
Jamaicans speak Jamaican Creole natively, also known locally as Patois (pronounced
"patwa"). Its pronunciation and vocabulary are significantly different from English,
despite it being based on English. Although all Jamaicans can speak English, which is
also the official language, they often have a very thick accent and foreigners may
have trouble understanding them. Some Jamaicans speak a little bit of the other
popular languages, like Spanish.
Time zone
Jamaica is 5hours behind of GMT
SSCQ
(Successful Sales Conversion Questions)
The following are some questions that you can use to help make recommendations
on the Jamaica.
Are you interested in an All inclusive resort?
Jamaica has an abundance of all large inclusive properties to offer visitors.
Will you be traveling with children?
There are a number of family friendly resorts in Jamaica. Some even offer
babysitting and child activities at no additional cost.
Are you looking for a quiet getaway?
Those wanting a quiet getaway should try either Runaway Bay, Negril or Port
Antonio.
Is this trip for a wedding or honeymoon?
Many resorts offer wedding, honeymoon and vow renewal services. Some are even
free.
Would you be interested in an Adults only property?
There are a number of adults only properties in Jamaica. Negril is an great place
for adult only properties some even with clothing optional beaches.
Would you be opposed to traveling some distance to get to your
destination?
This is an important question because Negril, Runaway Bay, and Ocho Rios are
some distance from the MBJ Airport. If they are not willing to travel then
recommend MBJ.
Geography
Jamaica is an island nation in the Caribbean, located to the south of Cuba and to the west
of the island of Hispaniola.
Culture & Social Conventions
Many Jamaican people are very generous and warm. Returning this warmth and
friendliness is a great way to show them you appreciate their country.
Chances are, you will be approached at one point or another during your travels in
Jamaica for money. Do not feel pressured into giving money. A strong "I'm alright"
and walking away is usually the best advice for instances such as this. This also
applies in the infamous straw markets. Note that the European method of just walking
away does not work well. You will generally need to engage with someone in order to
get away from them.
That being said, if you befriend or encounter one of the many wonderful Jamaican
people and you wish to give a friendly gift, that is perfectly acceptable and welcome.
Just exercise common sense when it comes to money.
Cultural respect is far more important. You are guests on their island. Please know
also that when speaking to the elderly you should say, "Yes ma'am." or "Yes, sir".
Good manners should be displayed at all times. Respect the environment and the
people. It is a simple rule of thumb that should always be applied when traveling
abroad. Don't expect that everyone will respect you, however.
Food & Drink
A trip to Jamaica is not complete without experiencing some of the unique cuisine.
Here are a few items to try:
Ackee - A popular fruit which contains poisonous gasses. Once
cut, the gasses are released making it safe to eat. Ackee is used in
the traditional Jamaican dish “Ackee and salt fish”.
Jerk - style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meats are dryrubbed or marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican
jerk spice
Coffee – some of the most sought after coffee is grown in the Blue
mountains of Jamaica
Rum – Very popular spirit in Jamaica
Economy & Industry - Overview
Jamaica is a mixed economy with both state enterprises and private sector
businesses. Major sectors of the Jamaican economy include agriculture, mining,
manufacturing, tourism, and financial and insurance services.
Tourism and mining are the leading earners of foreign exchange. Half the Jamaican
economy relies on services, with half of its income coming from services such as
tourism. An estimated 1.3 million foreign tourists visit Jamaica every year.
Jamaica has a wide variety of industrial and commercial activities. The aviation
industry is able to perform most routine aircraft maintenance, except for heavy
structural repairs. There is a considerable amount of technical support for transport
and agricultural aviation.
Jamaica has a considerable amount of industrial engineering, light manufacturing,
including metal fabrication, metal roofing, and furniture manufacturing. Food and
beverage processing, glassware manufacturing, software and data processing,
printing and publishing, insurance underwriting, music and recording, and advanced
education activities can be found in the larger urban areas. The Jamaican
construction industry is entirely self-sufficient, with professional technical standards
and guidance.

Dunn's River Falls (Ocho Rios)
One of Jamaica's national
treasures and considered by many
to be one of the most beautiful
spots on the island.
Dunn's River Falls, tumbles 600
feet over a series of protruding
rock ledges that act like natural
stair steps.
Visitors can ascend the slippery
rocks or stay at the base and swim
at the beach. At the top you can
expect to find souvenirs & crafts,
shoe rentals, changing facilities,
and lockers
Seven Mile Beach
Seven Mile Beach in Negril, one of
the longest in the Caribbean, is
considered by many to be the best
beach on the island.
The calms water and golden sand
beaches makes this a favorite of
visitors.
A wide variety of water sports are
available here such as jet skiing,
parasailing and snorkeling.
The shoreline is dotted with a mix of
family friendly and adult only
resorts.
Landmarks and Attractions
Fern Gully
A 3-mile gorge located on the road
from Kingston to Ocho Rios.
Contains at least 300 types of
ferns.
The dense fern growth appears to
have been growing in place since
the beginning of time.
The varieties of plant life may be
lost on many visitors but keen
botanists will enjoy seeing
approximately 300 varieties of fern
in addition to other species such
as Blue Mahoe and Banana trees.
The roadway through Fern Gully
was established in 1907 when an
earthquake destroyed one of the
eight rivers in the Ocho Rios area.
The river bed was subsequently
paved and the roadway was
established.
Dolphin Cove
Dolphin Cove offers you the
experience of a lifetime - the chance
to swim with bottlenose dolphins!
Various programs are offered which
feature different levels of interaction
with the dolphins, from touching the
dolphins as they swim past your feet
to being dragged through the lagoon,
holding on to their fins.
If you do not wish to interact with the
dolphins, there is still plenty to do at
Dolphin Cove as the entrance fee
includes a range of other activities
such as swimming with stingrays and
min-boat rides.
Vendors line the road, selling
wooden carvings and sculptures.
The dolphins live in a lagoon which is
separated from the sea by a manmade barrier, however, it is said that
the barrier is completely submerged
during high tide, leaving the dolphins
free to swim away should they
choose to.

Landmarks and Attractions
Black River Safari Tour
For a real life slice of Jamaican
history pay a visit to Black River.
The town grew up on the banks of
the Black River and is one of the
oldest in Jamaica. Black River
found much wealth during the
logwood boom, a wealth which
was lavishly displayed in the
town's buildings. Great examples
of Victorian and Georgian
architecture have been preserved
in the town, with many old
buildings being continually used
and maintained to the current day.
However, Black River is not
without some natural wonders.
Indeed, most visitors to Black
River are oblivious to the town's
illustrious history and head
straight for the River and Great
Morass which is teeming with
wildlife, most notably in the form
of Jamaican crocodiles!
Take a boat ride along Jamaica’s
longest river. Explore remote
mangrove swamps, see crocodiles
and other native species in their
natural habitat.
Blue Mountains
If you're looking for a challenge then
hiking to Blue Mountain Peak provides
a great opportunity. At 2,256 meters
(7,204 feet) above sea level, Blue
Mountain Peak is the highest point in
the Caribbean. The path to the top is
well laid out and no special
equipment is needed, the main
requirement is that you have the
stamina to hike all the way to the top
(this may take three to six hours,
depending on your level of fitness and
the weather conditions on the day).
The path to the top is surrounded by
beautiful scenery and you'll find
yourself frequently stopping to
admire the view. Once you reach the
top you'll be treated to a view of most
of Jamaica (on a clear day) and
maybe a glimpse of Cuba (on a very
clear day).
Covered in thick rain forests with
great views of the ocean below.
Located south of Ocho Rios, the Blue
Mountains are a great for biking,
hiking, or just checking out the
amazing views. Locals companies
offer full day or half day biking or
Hiking tours. Coffee production is
popular here.

Reggae, Calypso and Rap are all popular forms of music
found on the island.

of Nine Mile, about an 1hr 30mins from Ocho Rios.
Nine Mile is a popular tourist destinations year round.
Visitors can go the Bob Marley museum and buy
souvenirs of the late great artist.
Many resorts offer and local bars and restaurants offer

Safety
Crime
•
Although crime rates are higher in
Jamaica than other Caribbean islands,
most major crime is limited to Kingston’s
inner city and do not impact the tourist
areas. Large scale resorts have plenty of
security measures to protect their guests
and the grounds of the hotel.
•
Pick pocketing and petty theft are the
most common crimes travelers
experience. Travelers should always be
aware of their surrounding and take
simple precautionary measures to protect
their personnel possessions.
•
Anyone traveling around the island on
their own are encouraged to vigilante
about safety however following simple
precautionary measures can help them
keep safe and have an enjoyable trip.
•
Beware of locals asking for money to
guard your car. This is often a scam.
Drugs
• In some of the areas of the island,
it is not uncommon for visitors to be
asked if they want to purchase drugs
such as marijuana. This can be
especially true if visitors travel
outside of the major tourist areas.
• It is against the law in Jamaica to
buy, sell, or distribute drugs including
Marijuana. Laws are especially tough
if you attempt to take the drugs
outside of the country.
• Large scale resorts which cater to
foreign tourist have good security
teams who patrol, significantly
reducing problems with drugs.
