“I sometimes wonder, after
all, Amid this tangled web of
fate, If what is great may not
be small, And what is small
may not be great.”
--Robert Service
MAIN STAGE WEST, offering
affordable, professional live
theatre in a comfortable,
intimate setting right in the
center of Sebastopol.
SHIRLEY VALENTINE
by Willy Russell
directed by John Shillington
Wondering how she let
vibrancy and joy slip out
of her life, bored and
disillusioned housewife
Shirley Valentine finds
herself talking to the
walls. But when she
chances on a trip to
Greece, Shirley finds the
adventure, hope, laughs and, ultimately, love she
had been missing. Starring Mary Gannon Graham
in a tour de force performance. This comic
masterpiece lifts our spirits and inspires us to
embrace life in all its terrifying and delicious
glory.

THE MEMORY OF WATER
by Shelagh Stephenson
directed by John Craven
Three sisters gather for
their mother's funeral.
Each has her memories of
her childhood and this
creates conflict, which is,
by turns, angry, desperate,
poignant and wildly funny.
The situation is deepened
by the recurring presence
of Vi, the mum, a ghostly
vision in flowing taffeta. Whilst visible only to one
of the sisters, her influence and demand to be
understood rather than buried and forgotten
drives the other sisters as well. An evening,
provocative and hilarious is promised.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS
By Neil LaBute
directed by David Lear
EXIT THE KING
by Eugene Ionesco (an absurd comedy)
directed by Elizabeth Craven
HOW FAR WOULD YOU
GO FOR LOVE? Neil
LaBute's bitterly funny,
controversial exploration of morality and
gender roles in modern
America, The Shape of
Things, tells the story of
Evelyn, a sexy, aggressive
artist, and Adam, a shy,
insecure student, who become embroiled in an
intense affair. Before long, it veers into the kind of
dangerous, seductive territory that LaBute does
best, as Adam, under Evelyn's steady influence,
goes to unimaginable lengths to improve his
appearance and character.
MAY 2013
It is King Berenger’s
dying day, also, not
coincidentally,
the
last day of the
universe. The older
queen, Marguerite,
and the Doctor tell
the king that everything is falling apart –
from the walls of the
palace to the workings of the solar system – and
that he is dying. The younger queen, Marie,
exhorts him to live in the moment and not give in
to death. King Berenger does not want to die, but
his commands to restore order go unheeded.

MAURITIUS
by Theresa Rebeck
directed by Elizabeth Craven
This marvelously lively and
warmly engaging play by
Theresa Rebeck is a crowd
pleaser. A mad scrabble of
smarmy
characters
scramble to have a piece of
the action when two
priceless stamps show up in
an album of the estate of
Jackie’s deceased mother. Jackie insists the collection was left to her. Her estranged stepsister, Mary,
claims it to be rightfully hers. Mayhem ensues when
three sleazy philatelists enter to help “resolve” the
dispute.

THIS IS OUR YOUTH
by Kenneth Lonnergan
directed by Keith Baker
In 1982, on Manhattan's
Upper West Side, the
wealthy,
articulate,
pot-smoking teenagers
who were small children
in the '60s have emerged
as young adults in a
country that has just
resoundingly
rejected
everything they were brought up to believe in.
The very last wave of New York City's '60s-style
Liberalism has come of age—and there's
nowhere left to go. This Is Our Youth follows
forty-eight hours of three very lost young
souls in the big city at the dawn of the Reagan
Era.
OCTOBER 2013
THE LITTLE PRINCE
by DAVID TEMPLETON
