Slab Foam vs. Molded Foam
Slab foam is manufactured in block form and is then fabricated using cutting equipment into a final shape. Slab
foam can be cut to virtually any shape or size but its application is limited when it comes to compound curves.
Molded foam is liquid chemistry mixed to the exact specifications of the manufacturer and poured into a mold
creating any shape from simple to complex in one pour.
KUSH FOAM (SLAB)
Most slab foams used in seating range from
1.0 lbs / cubic foot (regular foam) to 3 lbs /
cubic foot (high density foam).
MOLDED FOAM
Molded foam ranges from 2.7lbs / cubic
foot to 3.6 lbs / cubic foot. (high density
foam only).
Kush is 1.8lbs / cubic foot.
Allseating typically uses 3.4lbs / cubic foot.
FIRMNESS OR ILD (INDENTATION LOAD
DEFLECTION) – determines how soft or
hard the foam is. The lower the number
the softer the foam
ILD can range from 10 to 100.
Kush’s ILD is 34.
The ILD range for molded foam can be
tweaked from very soft to very firm. A set
range cannot be determined because this
process is very part specific.
Allseating’s molded foam ILD is 44.
LONGEVITY
Slab foam has an effective life of 3-6 years.
Molded foam has an effective life of
10+ years.
COST
Slab foam is less expensive per cubic foot;
however, more is required to lend the same
support as molded.
Typically viewed as being more expensive
but on a use proportional basis cost about
the same or in some cases is cheaper than
slab foam.
COMFORT – is an individual choice
Slab foam is comfortable but has a shorter
life span of comfort then Molded foam.
Molded foam will deliver reliable comfort
far longer then slab foam as it has a greater
mass – offering more foam and less air.
OFF GASSING – both Slab and Molded
foam produce off gassing at pour.
In manufacturing Slab foam can produce off
gassing up to 5 days but the product is inert
before it reaches Allseating. Uses a chemical
called TDI (Toluene Diphenyl Isocyanate)
This chemical is less controllable then that
used in Molded foam and is lighter than air
so it rises.
Molded foam produces less off gassing as
one of its main chemicals is MDI (Methyl
Diphenyl Isocyanate). MDI is not as volatile
as the chemical used in Slab foam and is
heavier than air so the operators are not
breathing any off gassing.
SUMMARY
Kush foam is being offered specifically
because of the extremely comfortable initial
sit it provides.
Molded foam is offered because of its quality
and longevity. It provides better durability
and enhanced superior quality.
