Gold Rush
Visitors strike gold every third week of July
in Fairbanks, Alaska, during their Golden
Days festival. The five-day affair honors
Felix Pedro, the young Italian immigrant
who, on July 22, 1902, discovered gold in
Tanana Hills just northeast of Fairbanks. It
was Felix Pedro who famously declared,
“There’s gold in them there hills,” triggering
the Gold Rush. By 1908, so many
prospectors, outfitters, and business
people had ventured to Fairbanks that it
became the largest city in Alaska. Today
visitors can find a monument to Felix
Pedro, donated by the Italian government,
along the Steese Highway, which runs
through the Tanana Hills by Pedro Creek.
Felix Pedro is such a hometown hero that
during the festival you might even catch a
glimpse of him with his dark moustache,
flannel shirt, and wide-brimmed hat. It’s
more likely you’ve found the Felix Pedro
look-alike contest. And don’t miss the
Grizzly Alaskan contest, awarding honors
to the man with the hairiest beard, chest,
and legs and the ugliest “frontier feet.” The
Golden Days offer authentic Alaskan charm
worth its weight in gold.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
In February we decided to spotlight an employee every month. I can
honestly say that all of our employees are remarkable. They are all
caring, they love our residents and they work really hard to make sure
every resident is cared for and taken care of.
So I went to the source, the employees, and asked THEM to nominate
who they thought should be the employee of the month each month. Not
surprising, the nomination box is always full of suggestions. Here is our
July……
…EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH:
MARITZA ALVARADO
Maritza was born in Honduras on Valentine’s Day. She came
to the US when she was 15 years old. It was hard for a
teenager here since she did not speak one word of English!
Maritza lives close by The Leven Oaks in Monrovia and she
loves it. Today the joy in her life is her three children: 2 sons
Johnathan (21) and Rudy (15) and one daughter Fany (18).
She started at LOH in 2006, when asked Maritza said it is the
most favorite job she has ever had.
I have had the good fortune to taste Maritza’s tamales OMG!
Her side business is making and selling her famous Honduran
Tamales…no party is complete without them! Besides cooking
she loves to exercise, by bike riding and running. No wonder
she always looks great! Whenever possible Maritza is one of
those rare people that loves to go to classes to learn
something new.
It’s clear that Maritza loves people, especially seniors. You can
see it every time she is at work. She is loved by the residents
as well as the rest of us that work with her.

Famous July Birthdays
In astrology, those born between July 1st and
22nd are Crabs of Cancer. Kind and protective,
Crabs love to nurture others. While they may
be emotional, they are never soft. Cancers are
tenacious in their pursuit of domestic harmony.
Those born between July 23rd and 31st are
Leo’s Lions. Mixing strength, ambition, creativity,
and a flair for the dramatic, it is no wonder that
the king of the jungle is a Leo’s mascot.
Whether it’s in Hollywood or in the home, Leos
accomplish their goals.
