AU Men’s Basketball 1 Meet the Head Coach JAMES LANCASTER Head Coach 14th Season James Lancaster is beginning his 14th season as the Head Coach of Aurora University’s men’s basketball program. Prior to becoming the men’s coach, Lancaster coached AU’s women’s program for four seasons. During his tenure as the men’s Head Coach, Lancaster has amassed a composite record of 240-102 (.702), which is the most wins in AU men’s basketball history and the highest winning percentage of any men’s basketball coach at AU. Currently, Lancaster is 24th in winning percentage among the NCAA men’s basketball active coaches and 25th in winning percentage all-time. His Spartans won back-to-back titles in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference twice 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 and again in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. He also led the men’s program to their first ever NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 1998 and his team once again repeated that performance in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007. In 2005, AU hosted their first NCAA men’s basketball tournament game. Lancaster was named NIIC Coach of the Year a total of five times, backto-back twice in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 and 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. In his first season as AU’s men’s Head Coach in 1994-95, he was tabbed as the NIIC’s Coach of the Year. That gave him the unusual distinction of winning that award backto-back as women’s coach (1993-1994) and as a men’s coach. In 2006-2007, the Spartan’s first year in their new conference, the Northern Athletics Conference, Lancaster led the team to a 16-2 conference record giving them the NAC championship. Lancaster was also named NAC Coach of the Year. In addition to success in terms of won-lost records, Lancaster has built the AU program into one recognized for being competitive with an annually strong schedule, boasting top-flight opponents. One of the biggest highlights for the men’s basketball team was a first round victory at Trinity (TX) University in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. AU dominated the former Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference under Lancaster, going 103-34 in the past 12 years, for a .752 winning percentage. A 1986 graduate of Aurora University (with a bachelor’s degree in physical education), Lancaster was an Assistant Coach for the AU men’s team from 1986 to 1990. Lancaster played two seasons for AU (1984-1986). As a senior, he was named All Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference and AU’s male Athlete of the Year. Lancaster was also the Spartans’ MVP. Lancaster went on to earn his master’s degree from Chicago State University in 1999. Prior to attending AU, Lancaster attended Wabash Community College, where he played for one of the nation’s top junior college programs. 2 AU Men’s Basketball While at WCC, Lancaster was teammates with former NBA star Kenny Norman. Lancaster also enjoyed a stand-out prep career at Taylorville High School. He was elected into the Taylorville H.S. Hall of Fame in 2006. As Head Coach of AU’s women’s program, Lancaster had a composite 58-42 record, including a 32-8 record in the NIIC. During this time his teams had a pair of second-place finishes (1991 and 1992), and won back-to-back NIIC titles in 1993 and 1994. The 1993-1994 team qualified for the NCAA post-season playoffs for the first time in the school’s history. In 1997-1998 they made the NCAA Tournament. Lancaster and his wife, Michele, have four daughters, Baylee, Kelsey, Jenna and Delaney. They reside in Sugar Grove. In addition to his duties as men’s basketball coach, Lancaster is also the Director of Freshman Recruitment. Meet the Assistant Coaches JABARI HARRELL Assistant Coach Sixth Season Jabari Harrell joined the AU men’s coaching staff beginning with the 20022003 season. As a player, Jabari played four years on the Spartan’s men’s basketball team. He was the Team Captain of the varsity basketball team from 1997 to 2001. He was named NIIC All-Conference as a sophomore, junior and senior. Jabari was also named Co-Conference Player of the Year his senior season. In 1998, he was a part of the first-ever NCAA Division III playoff team and returned to the playoffs with the Spartans in 2001. Jabari is the all-time assist leader at Aurora University. Harrell is a 2002 graduate of Aurora University and earned his degree in recreation administration. He currently is the Director of Student Activities/Multicultural Programming. DREW GRONAU Assistant Coach Second Season Drew Gronau returns to Coach Lancaster’s coaching staff for a second season after completing a decorated career as an AU basketball player. Gronau played for the Spartans from 2001-2005. Gronau was named NIIC Honorable Mention twice and NIIC All-Conference once. In 2005, he became the 20th player in AU history to reach the prestigious 1,000 Point Club for a career. Gronau was on the 2002 team that reached the NCAA Division III tournament. He and his fellow Spartans recorded an opening round victory against Trinity (TX) University before being knocked out in the second round. Gronau is a 2005 graduate of Aurora University. DYLAN DRUGAN Assistant Coach Second Season A 2006 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dylan Drugan earned a varsity letter as the Student Manager for the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team that made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA National Championship tournament before being eliminated by eventual national champion, University of Virginia. Dylan spent two years with the men’s lacrosse team as part of the Notre Dame student manager program and one season with the Notre Dame football team. Prior to that, Dylan also was assigned to men’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer. As a prep athlete at Streamwood High School, Dylan was a varsity starter and team captain for the boys’ basketball team. Dylan also participated in AAU basketball and club soccer. Dylan also serves as an admission counselor at AU. KELSEY LANCASTER Ball Girl First Season AU Men’s Basketball 3 2007-2008 Season Preview The 2007-2008 Aurora University men’s basketball team is working to have another successful season following a record setting 2006-2007 season in which the Spartans won 25 games and posted a 25-3 record. The Spartans enter the season having been recognized by several different preseason rankings as a Top 25 team, including 13th by D3hoops.com, 14th by Basketball Times and 17th in DIII News. The Northern Athletics Conference men’s basketball coaches also nabbed AU as the team to beat in the 2007-2008 season. The Spartans received 10 first-place votes out of a possible 12. Head Coach James Lancaster returns for his 14th season, accumulating a record of 240-102 and is working to repeat history with another winning season. Since 2000, the Spartans have a sparkling record of 143-48 (74.9%) and are 77-8 at home in Thornton Gymnasium. The next best record since 2000 in Illinois NCAA Division III Basketball is Illinois Wesleyan University with a record of 128-59. In the 2006-2007 season the Spartans gained national attention in many categories. In the nation, the Spartans were 10th in scoring (86.3), 2nd in scoring margin (16.9), 7th in threepoint field goals per game (10.9), 6th in three-point field goal percentage (40%) and 4th in winning percentage (.893). The 2007-2008 Spartans return a core of players from last year’s season, including three starters. The Spartan’s senior class has a 64-19 record with two conference championships and two NCAA tournament appearances in three seasons. Senior forward Larry Welton (Chicago/Thornwood HS), the NAC Player of the Year and AU’s leading scorer, returns as a Street and Smith Preseason All-American to complete his remarkable collegiate career. In his first three seasons with the Spartans, Welton has gained local and national attention for his performances. Welton has been named to four All-American teams, All-Region five times, conference Player of the Year three times and AllConference three times. He moved into the top five on the AU all-time scoring list with 1,736 points, which places him fifth. The all-time leading scorer is AU legend Mickey Johnson with 2,453 points. Welton averaged 20.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, en route to being named Northern Athletics Conference Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference in 2006-2007. In his 4 AU Men’s Basketball three seasons at AU, Welton tallied double-figure scoring outputs in 80 of the 84 contests, while tallying 20 or more points 46 times in his career. Following his sophomore year, he was honored by the NABC (Third-Team) and D3hoops.com (Honorable Mention) with the All-American awards, as well as being named Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) Player of the Year and All-Conference. Other key veterans joining Welton include junior Dusty Magee (Knightstown, IN/Knightstown HS), junior Chad Trudo (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville HS), and senior Doug Lambert (Warrenville, IL/Wheaton-Warrenville South HS). Magee returns to lead the Spartans after averaging 10.5 points and 1.75 assists per game while shooting 41.3% from three-point range. Trudo as a sophomore averaged 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 47.1% from three-point range, while Lambert averaged 9.5 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 40.2% from three-point range. “Doug, Chad and Dusty provide a strong leadership presence for us on the court. All three have experience in big games for us and are willing to step up and knock down the big shot when called upon,” Lancaster said. Coach Lancaster will rely on other returning and incoming players to help replace All-Conference guard Derrick Leonard. Junior transfers Jarrett Starwood (Naperville, IL/Waubonsee C.C.) and KeJuan McGraw (Mattoon, IL/Southside) will be a great addition to complement Lancaster’s style of play. Others returning for the Spartans include sophomore Lance Robinson (Danville, IN/Danville HS), sophomore Shane Roland (Knightstown, IN/Knightstown HS), sophomore Brandon Scott (Romeoville, IL/Romeoville HS), and senior Brad Stark (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) AU welcomes many new faces including forwards Desmond Cummings(Montgomery, IL/Oswego East HS), Scott Malewig (Sugar Grove, IL/Kaneland HS), Skyler Ormsbee (Oswego, IL/Oswego East HS) and guards Pete Carlson (Superior, WI/Marshall HS), Marcus Lee (Wheeling, IL/Wheeling HS), David Lozano (Aurora, IL/Oswego East HS), and Ryan Negre (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville HS). It was a day to honor “MJ ” of “Da Bulls.” No, not that “MJ.” This was a tribute to Aurora College’s original “MJ”...Mickey Johnson, formerly of “Da Spartans.” At a time when the other “MJ” was probably just learning to dribble a basketball and pounding milk (instead of Gatorade), Mickey Johnson was performing feats of excellence against the opponents on AU ’s schedule. Johnson also helped dispel any nay sayers who may have felt that his incredible collegiate numbers were a result of playing at a nonNCAA Division I program. In his 12year NBA career– the first five of which were spent with the Bulls – Johnson averaged 14.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He racked up 904 NBA games played with the Bulls, Indiana, Milwaukee, Golden State and New Jersey. He appeared in 22 post-season games with a scoring average of 13.7 p.p.g. As a forward, he also averaged nearly three assists per game and had two years with 300+ assists. But Johnson is about more than numbers alone. He completed his degree work in business administration in 1974 (prior to entering the NBA), enjoyed an outstanding professional basketball career, worked to refurbish his old neighborhood, and is now a successful businessman in the Chicago area. That’s not too bad for a kid who grew up in the shadows of the old Sears Building and played very little high school basketball. Perhaps the inscription on the plaque presented to Johnson by Dr. Bedrosian that night in 1978 said it best: “...in appreciation for your contribution to Aurora College and SOCIETY - student, athlete, alumnus, gentleman. A model for every person who strives for excellence...” Mickey Johnson’s efforts and humanitarian outlook on life will forever be the standard for future Spartan athletes. He was – and is still today –The Pride of the Spartans. Though established initially to prepare graduates for ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to a new campus on the western edge of the nearby community of Aurora. With this change came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institution was rechristened Aurora University. In 1992, the Aurora and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. Today Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seeking students a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses. The Aurora campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Professional Studies (including the Dunham School of Business, School of Nursing, School of Social Work and School of Health and Physical Education). The graduate programs offer areas of specialization, leading to master’s degrees in business administration, recreation administration, teaching and social work, as well as a doctorate in education. At AU, academic programs are enhanced through learning opportunities. The Dunham Scholars Program incorporates service learning and extracurricular activities into its business curriculum. The Honors Program offers students advanced coursework, innovative seminars and participation in special events. May Term is a three-week program offering opportunities to study abroad, research a science topic on campus or travel to Chicago to explore the city’s culture. AU offers its undergraduates a wide range of on- and off-campus learning experiences. Students participate in more than 60 musical, literary, religious, social and service organizations and play active roles in campus governance. The university also fields18 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. The Spartans boast a winning tradition with 52 conference titles in recent years and 28 regular appearances in national tournaments. The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a racquetball court, climbing wall, complete locker room facilities, training room, weight room, aerobic-activities room, classroom and coaches’ offices. Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an hour’s drive of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois Research and Development Corridor. It is accessible via Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit. statistics highlights upcoming games For Complete NAC Standings, Results, Directions and News LOG ON TO www.northernathleticsconf.com 2007-2008 Men’s Basketball Schedule Date Nov. 2, Fri Nov. 16, Fri Nov. 17 Sat Nov. 20, Tue Nov. 28, Wed Dec. 1, Sat Dec. 4, Tue Dec. 8, Sat Dec. 12, Wed Dec. 15, Sat Dec. 19, Wed Dec. 28, Fri Dec. 29, Sat Jan. 9, Wed Jan. 12, Sat Jan. 17, Thu Jan. 19, Sat Jan. 23, Wed Jan. 26, Sat Jan. 29, Tue Feb. 2, Sat Feb. 6, Wed Feb. 9, Sat Feb. 12, Tue Feb. 16, Sat Feb. 23, Sat Feb. 26, Tue Feb. 28, Tue Mar. 1, Sat Opponent Time Northern Illinois University (Exhibition) 7:00 p.m. Wartburg College Tournament 8:00 p.m. vs. Wartburg College Wartburg College Tournament 6:00 p.m. vs. UW-Eau Claire NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE 7:00 p.m. Millikin University 7:30 p.m. DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY* 4:15 p.m. Wisconsin Lutheran College* 7:00 p.m. BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY* 4:15 p.m. Rockford College* 7:00 p.m. Milwaukee School of Engineering* 4:15 p.m. CLARKE COLLEGE* 7:00 p.m. Franklin College Tournament TBA Franklin College Tournament TBA Concordia University (Chicago)* 7:00 p.m. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (WI)* 4:15 p.m. ROCKFORD COLLEGE* 7:00 p.m. MARANATHA BAPTIST COLLEGE* 4:15 p.m. Dominican University* 7:00 p.m. Edgewood College* 4:15 p.m. Benedictine University* 7:00 p.m. MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF ENG.* 4:15 p.m. WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE* 7:00 p.m. Marian College* 4:15 p.m. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (CHI)* 7:00 p.m. Concordia University (WI)* 4:15 p.m. LAKELAND COLLEGE* 4:15 p.m. Northern Athletics Conf.
