Marketing the New Bowling Museum
ARLINGTON—The
USBC moving to Arlington,
Texas is great, but honestly,
I’m more excited about the
inclusion of the International
Bowling Museum and Hall
of Fame in the same building. Having bowling history at
your doorstep creates tremendous marketing opportunities.
All who visit the new International Bowling Campus
from around the world will
have the opportunity to tour
the museum, and it will add a
dynamic dimension to every
visit. In close proximity to
Texas’ most attended entertainment district, the museum
should attract thousands of
new visitors who never had the
chance to see it in St. Louis.
When the museum opens
in 2010, bowling fans and
sports fans in general will stop
in, and the thousands who attend the other attractions in the
district will make the museum
one of their stops – if bowling
does a good job of marketing
the facility.
The challenge for the new
museum will be to make it
interesting, make it attractive,
and continually offer new exhibits and attractions for those
who have attended before as
an enticement to re-visit. I can
even envision “live” exhibits,
such as a ticket to attend a
training session of Team USA
or another national team that
may be visiting, or special exhibition matches at the International Training Center that
will be located at the opposite
end of the building.
If the PBA becomes involved in the project, exhibition matches with their top
players could be arranged in
the tour off-season. The possibilities are virtually endless.
Dallas-Fort Worth is a huge
media market. Imagine an ancontinued on page 7

ANAHEIM—Linbrook
Bowling Center opened its
doors in 1958. Fifty years later
and many fine memories, the
staff and patrons celebrated
the event Saturday, August 30
and Sunday, August 31. All
of our events were sold out in
advance. Linbrook Bowl was
definitely the place to be!
The day was kicked off with
a Junior Adult Tournament
sponsored by Orange County
Games. The Handicap Division
winners were: 1. Kevin Hopkinson/Evan Mostow 1478; 2.
Chris Conway/John Conway
1368; 3. Sarah Clark/Bob Clark
1363; 4. Matt Clark/Nicole
Bloom 1362. In the Scratch
Division: 1. Mark McLeod/E.J.
Rogers 1256, 2. J.D. Greenhalgh/Andrew Newburn 1236.
The Best Dressed 50’s Award
went to Cara Myers and Kelsey
Myers.
John Haveles, the General
Manager, made a wonderful
presentation about the history
of Linbrook Bowl after which,
Cynthia Ward, President of the
Anaheim Historical Society,
presented Linbrook Bowl with
a beautiful plaque commemorating Linbrook as a “Googie”
style Landmark significant to
the architectural heritage of
Anaheim, California.
Next up was the Senior NoTap sponsored by Caremore
with a sold out crowd of 128
bowlers. The main event winners were: 1st place (tie) Roger
Morris and Doc Dennis 939, 3.
Tony Chaco 918, 4. JackStewart 917, 5. Dick McKenzie
880. We paid out 16 places in
the main division and sidepots
each game. The 3-6-9 was won
by Frank Pearlman for $128.
Many memories were shared
by this group of bowlers and a
terrific time was had by all.
The League Bowlers Luck
of the Draw event was the third
tournament. There were many
close matches. The last three
teams ironically ended up being
our Friday night leagues: The
Kamaaina League, Vegas party
and T.G.I.F. It came down to the
last bowler on the Vegas Party
League. Without mentioning
any names a single pin spare
was missed to give the Kama-

aina league the victory, bragging rights and a pizza party for
their league! Congratulations to
all three teams and thank you to
all the bowlers for coming out
for the special day.
Our featured match was up
next. Eva Munson and Terry
Brent against Rose Williams
and Glenn Allison. It couldn’t
have been a better match with
these Hall of Fame bowlers.
Rose and Glenn took the first
match by 12 pins. Eva and
Terry came back strong at the
beginning of the second game.
They moved ahead of them
but Rose smashed a 4-bagger
to shut them out. Thank you to
all four bowlers for putting on
a terrfic show that the bowlers
loved to watch!
I don’t have any stats on the
Color of Money event. But I
am sure a great time was shared
and I know they were expecting
an exciting evening. They had
a terrifc turnout of 92 bowlers.
Lots of money and prizes were
awarded to the bowlers!
Our open play bowlers enjoyed 50 cent games and shoe
rental on Sunday and limited
lanes were used on Saturday.
We had a great turnout for
the Karaoke Contest. Many
patrons enjoyed the BBQ and
live band.
I would like to thank all of
our sponsors for helping out
with the events raffle prizes.
Without your help we could
not have made these events so
successful. Thank you to the
staff for making it all happen
and to the bowlers for making
this 50th anniversary a terrific
celebration.

LONG
BEACH—The
2008 - 2009 bowling season is
now officially underway, following Monday Labor Day,
although the Vegas league got
an early start on August 18.
The reason the league starts
early each year is to be able to
schedule it’s 33 week schedule
of two rounds, one position
at the end of the league team
sweeps and OPTIONAL Vegas
Doubles and Singles sweeps in
late March or early April.
Members especially like
the two round schedule which
means they only bowl each
team twice until conclusion.
When the season starts, there
is usually a league meeting and
it is very important for members to attend and approve, or
disapprove, management. For
instance, will you have voice
and vote to elect knowledgeble
officers, set league fees and
rules? Remember, it is YOUR
LEAGUE and you have voice
and vote.
There’s always those who
complain AFTER the league
is off and running but making changes to league rules is
possible, it’s a very difficult
procedure.
The Vegas league elected
officers at the end of last season and conducted the meeting for the new season in July.
Membership interest is evident
with more than 75% attending
to set league fees and rules. Although there are a few changes
made annually, they basically
remain the same.
Since the Vegas league was
on a Bye Monday, we have no
report except to remind gals
looking for a league that there’s
still two openings in the 16team Classified Foursome. It’s
now in it’s 51st consecutive
year so that assures you it must
be doing everything right. Call
me at (562) 423-1567 for more
information and sign on as a
member or “sub”.
NEXT WEEK: Monday 10
a.m. September 8, Keystone
Lanes. The schedule, league
rules and financial statements
are included on one sheet and
will be distributed to each
member. One per bowler so,
a reminder to team captains to
see that only each team member gets one. Also, please carry
it in your bowling bag so you
will have it available when
needed. Addresses and phone
numbers for hosting centers
are included this year.

MORENO VALLEY—We want to thank ABC Moreno Valley Bowl for being our perfect host of our Labor Day tournament.
Tim Bodiford won with his Storm Duece II, drilled by Leo Estes
at the ABC Pro Shop. Tim has been bowling for 22 years, and
has bowled a sanctioned 300 at AMF Riverside Lanes, (displaying his handsome 300 ring.) He also bowls in the Friday Sams
Town League at Riverside Lanes. Tim, a very likeable young
man, has only been a NABI member for about 2 months. He
drives a limo for his occupation, and his hobby is bowling. Tim
is quite the family man, coaching his 2 daughter’s soft ball team,
and his son, Damon, is always his biggest fan, coming to all the
tournaments with him. Tim dedicates this win to his wife & kids.
Good bowling Tim!
We had a Beat the Board with the top 7 as follows: (all with
HDCP) Tim Bodiford, bowling a 691 series, Shawnna Miller in
a tie with Guy Clear, bowling a 680 series, Neil Colgrove, with a
650 series, Jay Shackelford, a 641 series, Kerry Lucka, bowling
a 632 series & Tom Jones, with a 629 series.
Our sidepots went to Russell Valentine, Jonathan Miller, Tom
Jones & Jay Shackelford (3). Our Ebonite Game Breaker was
won by Jay Shackelford & we all had pleny of hot dogs. It was
great fun!
Look for our Inland Empire NABI ad for Trevi Lanes on Sat,
Sept. 6 in this week’s Bowling News.
Also, look for our ad for the new Orange County NABI, beginning our first tournament this Sunday, Sept. 7 at Bowlium. All
the details for both tournaments are in our ads. See ya there!

Reno Offers Bowlers
LABOR
Competition & Entertainment REWARDED!
RENO, NV—It’s not too late to enter! The National Bowling
Stadium is accepting entries into the 2008 Storm National Mixed
Championships with the goal to set a new record for the number
of entries and the biggest prize fund ever offered in the tournament’s six year history.
Entrants into the 2008 Storm National Mixed Tournament
and the Festival of Bowling have a wide variety of choices. With
seven different events in the two tournaments and loads of activities in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area, the selection is almost endless.
Within walking distance of downtown’s major hotels, visitors
can see a 1981 24-Karat Gold plated DeLorean at the National
Automobile Museum, watch the kayakers on the Truckee River
at Wingfield Park, enjoy real circus acts at the Circus Circus, attend concerts and sporting events at the new Reno Events Center,
watch movies in a 12 screen Cineplex, stroll down the Truckee
River Walk, or just sit and relax at any number of cafes along
the way. Scheduled events during the tournaments include the
Great Italian Festival, October 11 and 12, Nevada Day Celebrations in Carson City, October 30 – November 2 and University
of Nevada-Reno Football games. For a complete list of events
happening during your visit, go to WWW.VisitRenoTahoe.com
and follow the link to the Events Calendar.
The Storm National Mixed Tournament and Festival of Bowling will be held for six weekends in a row between October 2nd
and November 9th. The first squad of the weekend is Thursdays
at 2:00PM, giving bowlers enough time to get to town and get
settled before bowling. National Mixed Team event is held at
6:00PM Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and the Mixed Doubles and Singles may be bowled at either 10:00AM Friday, Saturday or Sunday, or at 2:00PM Thursday, Friday, Saturday or
Sunday. There is no Team event Sundays in order to give bowlers
and chance to finish early. All Festival events are held during
each squad.
If you want to switch partners or bowl with a new friend you
have made at the tournament the Festival of Bowling Events are
just for you. The Festival of Bowling events include Open Doubles (any combination of bowlers men and/or women) and Open
Singles (for those who may not have a doubles partner but would
like to bowl a Singles Event or would like to bowl an additional
Singles Event tournament). Other events in the Festival are the
Senior Doubles (any combination of bowlers, aged 50 and over),
Senior Singles, with separate men’s and women’s divisions, and
the Adult/Youth Doubles.
The Adult/Youth Doubles has become a favorite event for the
many families traveling to Reno. One adult and youth are a team,
and competitors may change partners and form other teams,
thereby giving families and friends a chance to compete up to
three times.
In the past five years, the Mixed National Tournament and
the Festival of Bowling have awarded nearly $700,000 in prizes,
$20,000 of which was in the form of scholarship money to youth
bowlers.
Special Room Rates have been set up with the tournament
sponsoring hotels Circus Circus, Silver Legacy and the newest
addition Club Cal-Neva. This year, the Silver Legacy and Circus Circus are offering free room upgrades to group organizers.
Book 5-15 rooms at the Circus Circus and get a complimentary upgrade to a mini-suite. If you book 16 or more rooms, the
mini-suite is free. The Silver Legacy offers group organizers
booking 10 or more rooms a free room upgrade. For reservations, call the Silver Legacy at 1-800-687-8733 (Booking Code –
MIXED07), the Circus Circus at 1-866-447-7728 (Booking Code
– IBOWL07) or the Club Cal-Neva at 1-877-777-7303 (Booking
Code – STORM). Be sure to mention the Booking Code for your
room upgrade.
Complete rules for the National Mixed Tournament and the
Festival of Bowling as well as the entry form may be downloaded from www.NationalMixed.com
For further information, contact the National Bowling Stadium at 1-800-304-2695, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to

drained, but it was worth the
effort! He received $1000 for

TEXAS
continued from page 1
nual televised major event or
a made for TV event from the
new Training Center.
Local sports fans that
are attending Texas Rangers games, or those going to
the new billion-dollar Dallas
Cowboys Football Stadium
will visit the museum if bowling officials can design some
meaningful cross-promotions.
Even NASCAR fans may stop
in while visiting Texas Motor Speedway, which is only
a short drive away. And don’t
forget, the Cowboy’s Stadium
will host a little event called
the NFL Superbowl in 2011.
Here’s an idea – during
Cowboy and Ranger games,
open up the IBC parking lot
to fans. It’s only a five-minute
drive to the new stadium, and
affordable parking will be hard
to find. It looks like the lot will
hold about 300 cars, and if it
is done right, it could become
a very popular place to park
for Cowboy games and Texas
Ranger games that are held
when the bowling building is
normally closed. To take it a
step further, buy a couple of
shuttle busses to get people
to the stadium and back. Paint
bowling pins on the bus, and
have a sign on the back that
says “Follow Me to Bowling
History.” The busses will be
rolling billboards for bowling;
and handout information brochures, coupons and discount
tickets can be distributed to
passengers. A reasonable parking fee will easily pay for the
busses in a short time.
Directly across the street
from the new museum is Six
Flags Over Texas, which is
bigger than California’s Disneyland - another golden marketing opportunity. Why not
make a deal where millions of
Six Flags ticket stubs have an
attachment for a bowling museum discount, or a free gift,
redeemable at the museum?
The Arlington Sports and
Entertainment District is already one of the nation’s most
desirable and centrally located
vacation destinations; and with
the edition of the Cowboys
Stadium and the International
Bowling Campus, it will become even more attractive in
the future.
The question is, will bowling get its little slice of the
sports entertainment pie in
Arlington? With the right marketing and promotions, the potential is tremendous.

New Time Slot Set For U.S. Women’s Open on ESPN
ARLINGTON, TX—Due to a schedule change, the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open, a United States Bowling Congress event, will debut on ESPN this Sunday at 2 p.m. EDT, one hour later than originally
scheduled.
Sunday’s premiere will mark the first of five consecutive weeks of U.S. Women’s Open coverage on ESPN, which will continue on Sept. 14, 21 and 28 and Oct. 5, all at 2 p.m. EDT.
The U.S. Women’s Open started with more than 180 competitors, who battled through 32 grueling games of qualifying Aug. 1-4 at Brunswick Zone XL in Romeoville, Ill., before the top 16 advanced
to the single-elimination bracket that will be featured on ESPN.
The field of 16 of the most talented women bowlers in the world was divided into four sub-brackets, and on each of the first four telecasts, four players will face off for a spot in the finals, which airs
on Oct. 5.
The field includes Team USA members, former professional stars, international standouts, collegiate champions and top amateurs, and the event concludes with a climatic title match that makes
bowling history.

THE CHUCK LANDE STORY
by John Jowdy
Although two foreign bowlers, Jason Belmonte of Australia and Osku Palermaa of Sweden have
energized young bowlers all over the world with their two-handed thumbless delivery, they are not
the first bowlers to apply this method of execution.
My first encounter with this unique bowling style occurred in 1989. Lande, a young bowler from
Dallas, participated in the PBA summer tour and, although not a big winner,
he was quite impressive
I contacted Chuck Lande recently and he gave me the following account of his two-handed
thumbless method of bowling.
Lande begin bowling in a youth league at age 12 in 1977. He bowled with one hand his first season and averaged a dismal 120. In 1978, Lande’s mother purchased Chuck a ball from Kmart. The
sporting goods cashier drilled the ball and, needless to say, it was a “lousy” fit. He couldn’t even
hold the ball; plus it was too heavy. . Consequently, he inserted the two fingers but not the thumb.
The next season, he averaged close to 175 and by the age 15, he was averaging over 200.
Here are some of Mr. Lande’s accomplishments in his early years of bowling:
1. He rolled his first sanctioned 300 at age 17 while bowling in the Junior Leagues.
2. At age 18, he rolled back-to-back 300 games en route to winning the prestigious Dallas
Morning News Match Game Championships.
3. He rolled perfect games in over a dozen bowling centers in the Dallas Metroplex
Lande joined the PBA in 1986 at age 22 and bowled virtually all SW Regional PBA events from
1986-1991 and posted the following record:
1. He won five PBA Regional titles from 1987-1991.
2. He had at least five runner-up finishes, which he tries to forget but still haunt him.
3. He cashed in over 85% of PBA Regionals that he bowled in.
4. He qualified for the National Resident Pro Championships from the SW Region Point List
three times during that period.
It is important to note that the SW Region was one of the PBA’s toughest during that period. It
featured such players as Gary Dickinson, David Ozio, Del Ballard, Norm Duke, Tony Westlake,
Chris Warren, Mark Williams, Henry Gonzales, and Mike and Mark Scroggins.

Reading by MOLLY
Lande competed on the PBA summer tour in 1989 and learned three things:
1. He was good enough to compete with PBA players.
2. The lifestyle was a total beating and not very exciting.
3. The opportunity to earn a good living was not there except for Hall of Fame caliber players.
In the mid 1990’s, Lande begin tinkering with computers. He visited all local computer and
electronic superstores and purchased all customer-returned units, as well as all units placed on the
clearance racks. He would fix up the computers at home and sell them to bowlers and bowling
proprietors. The little sideline hobby continued to grow and by the year 2000, Lande was the proud
owner of a state of the art PC repair, refurbishing and marketing facility. He employed repair technicians, national and international sales reps.
The rapid growth and success of the company helped him land on the Dallas Business Journal
Fast Tech 50, Dallas’ 100 top fastest growing businesses in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. He garnered
two semi-finalist awards for the Ernst & Young Entrepeneur of the Year Award and made more than
enough money from 1998 to 2000 that he was beginning to think of retiring.
Lande was a guest speaker at Bowl Expo in Las Vegas in 2001 speaking on the need for proprietors to embrace computers and technology in their centers. During his visit to the show, he was
shocked to learn how few proprietors used PC’s, or had websites, or kept a customer database, etc.
Yet, they all mentioned that business was great. He left the trade show with the desire to sell his tech
company and build a center of his own in his hometown just outside of Dallas.
He sold the company to a private investment group of ex-telecom executives in 2002. Shortly
afterwards, he hired Howard Ellman, a designer he met at Bowl Expo, to develop a concept for a
modern bowling center. This gave birth to Rowlett Bowl-a- Rama, a truly state of the art facility.
The beautiful center has been successful in attracting league and casual bowlers, with over 200
youth league bowlers and about 800 adult league bowlers (in a 26 lane center). The figures continue
to grow. He really enjoys the bowling industry.
Bowl-a-Rama is also home to former Junior Team USA bowler Jaime Foster, a 21-year-old
female two-hander as well as a seven-tear old two-handed prodigy named Anthony Simonsen, who
continuously shoots games of about 230.

Lande currently bowls three games a week in a competitive league at his bowling center and
averages between 225-230 (which he thinks stinks) He still bowls two-handed and typically uses
regular urethane or polyester equipment, claiming modern balls are too powerful. He hopes to bowl
in some PBA senior events when he turns 50 in 2014.
Chuck Lande’s success is truly emblematic of The American Dream and is arguably the most financially successful ex-professional bowler ever. Many “big name” bowlers have taken advantage
of their reputations and, with financial backing, have achieved great success. However, Lande’s
wealth is a result of his ingenuity and foresight. Furthermore, he amassed his fortune by age 35, an
almost unbelievable accomplishment
Chuck Lande Is married to his wife Diane. They have two beautiful children, an eight-year old
girl Jordan, and a five-year old son, Jeremy.

GALLO AND DECKER
ENTERS IN PBA LADIES
AND LEGENDS
Note: This writer was priming
this story before I got injured in a
fall at Kansas City last May. This
story is something many people
did not know that two participants
were deaf and worth mentioning.
ROCKFORD—Deaf
bowlers Frank Gallo, Jr , Newport, VA
and Lindy Decker, Dover, PA were
among the 139 PBA senior men
and 52 professional and amateur
women entered in the Columbia
300 PBA Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 at The Cherry
Bowl, Rockford, IL last May 2-4.,
The Ladies and Legends features
the ladies’ top female bowlers and
the legends’ top pro senior male
bowlers who are 50 and older;
Gallo, Jr. and Decker did not
bowl together because the event
format calls for all bowlers to
bowl 2 qualifying rounds of 6
games with top 24 women and top
24 men bowl as doubles partners
doubles according to the to the
positions they qualified. So they
hoped fate would pair them together but read on..
In the first round Gallo placed
80th with 1247 (207.8 ave.) and
rallied in next day’s 2nd round
with 1377 (229.5 ave.) but his
2624 total placed him 38th, 54
pins short of making top 24 men.
Because of large men entries and
he, being a super senior, Gallo
cashed for $900.00.
With Decker who last month
scored a deaf women’s record
2179 all-events total in the Great
Lakes Deaf Women’s Tournament
at Columbus, OH, it was different
and interesting tale. She bowled
horribly in her first 6 games placing 40th with 1123 (187.2 ave.)
but in the next day’s 6 games,
Decker busted out with a big 1408
(ladies’3rd highest of day, 234.7
ave.) for 2531 total for a big jump
up to 21st place. She made the top
24 women qualifiers for the round
robin Baker system match plays..
For the 24 games Baker system
match plays, Decker was paired
with 21st place PBA Senior Tom
Howison, Chillicothe, OH who
had 2696. They did well, moving
up and finished in 12th place with
11 wins and 13 losses record and
5604 total pins for $2500.00 prize.
($1250 each).
The men’s senior standout
Tom Baker, King, NC led the
men’s qualifying and was paired
with. the ladies’ pro standout Liz
Johnson, Cheektowaga, NY who
had won last two Ladies and Legends. But in Baker system format,
they finished in 15th place.
The winners were #4 Qualifiers Kelly Kulick, Union City, NJ
and Robert Harvey, Boise, ID who
had the best 19-5 win & loss record for the $15,000.00 prize..
Kudos to Decker and Gallo for
cashing in their first debut in this
event.

Congratulations to our 2007-08 All-Star Teams
Congratulations to our Open Division and Farm Club All-Star
Teams. Our Open Division team members are Devin Bidwell,
Jeremy Glover, Charlie Hair, Brandon Kraye and Jeff Spiesman
while our Farm Club team is made up of Virgil Hilvano, Jerome
Jordan, Mark Myers, Max Slevcove and Patrick Smith. Each
will be rewarded a scholarship and one from each division will
be crowned our Bowler of the Year at our awards banquet later
this fall.
Last Season Was A Tough One For Us
(Excerpts from June 19th Article)
It’s been a trying time to be the director of the JAT. In the
past two years the JAT family has suffered some very saddening
losses. We suddenly lost three JAT Alums, Derrick Salary, T.C.
Giberson and Joel Reyes all well before their time. We also lost
a great supporter of the JAT, T.C.’s mother Lori Giberson. These
were individuals from different corners of Southern California
who came together to do what they loved to do. Four amazing
individuals that I never would have had the chance to cross paths
with if it wasn’t for bowling.
With a heavy heart I attended each of the four funerals and as
I looked around familiar faces surrounded me. I was so proud to
see all the support and outreach of the JAT bowlers and parents
who came together to help comfort the families of our Alums. It
enforced my belief that the JAT is more than just a tournamentit’s truly a family. The sight of generations of bowlers paying
their respects was truly amazing.
Every time I run into the guys I bowled with it seems like
not a day had passes since we had been on the lanes. A couple
of hours together ragging on each other and catching up really
made me miss the “old days” of JAT. Many times alumni ask me
“Is the JAT still around?” I always answer “yes” and tell them
how hard we are working to keep things going strong. Most ask
why I’m still around and it’s because of what JAT meant to me.
It was the place that I met my best friends- the guys I’m still in
touch with and always look forward to seeing. The experience of
bowling junior had such a positive effect on my life that I want to
make sure that every junior has the chance to have a JAT career
under their belt.
As our new season starts, a
few juniors won’t be back and
will be off to start their adult
careers. Again, I will encourage all the juniors to “age-out”
and play out your entire junior
career. Every bowler I’ve
crossed paths with after they
“turned” tells me that they miss
their days of junior bowling.
When I was a junior I didn’t
realize that 20 years later I’d
be brought to tears laughing
about “road trips to Fresno for
CSC” or “snow in Vegas on
Christmas break”. It’s a once
in a lifetime experience that is
never forgotten. I hope every
one of you bowling now has
made friends as special and
memorable as the friends I’ve
made thanks to this great game
of bowling.

SED Jr. Travel
by David Gordon
ROSEMEAD – Hello everyone and welcome back from a
long summer. SED Jr. Travel starts back up this Saturday, September 6th, at Del Rio Lanes in Downey. Registration begins at
1:30, with bowling to start at 2:00. The cost will remain at just
$15 per session.
For those new, SED Jr. Travel is a scratch 2-person team format, which bowls 4 games each week at a different bowling center throughout the Los Angeles and Orange counties. The junior
program develops many of the skills you will need for higher
competition, but keeps a lot of the fun you’re use to from your
Saturday morning house leagues. Recommended averages for
SED Jr. Travel start at 165 for boys and 150 for girls. For more
information, please email me at [email protected]
or call me at 310-665-9536.
I hope to see most of you veterans and a lot of new faces this
Saturday.

Linbrook’s 50th
Anniversary Bash
by Joy McGregor
ANAHEIM—I feel compelled to comment on Linbrook’s
celebration of 50 years in the business of providing bowlers of
all ages a home (center) to participate and to enjoy this great, fun
sport of ours.
The celebration was held this past Saturday, August 30th and
as I drove into the familiar parking lot, which is extensive, I could
not see even one space available, other than the marked “Handicapped.” Finally, just bidding my time, I followed a bowler who
was apparently (thank goodness) leaving and snagged their space.
As I gleefully walked up to the front door, I spied several large
BBQ’s with a multitude of people waiting for the 50 cent hot
dogs, pizza and cold drinks. I stopped for a sample and was very
pleased ... everyone knows that Linbrook’s pizza is absulutely
the BEST, but you should also know that their hot dogs rival the
world-famous Nathan’s ... who knew? What a feast! They were
certainly prepared for a crowd and had ample food and drink to
please all. Their “live” fifties style band was fab and set up in the
meeting room, along with many tables and chairs, and ... 50 cent
cold beer. Lots of folks were congregated in THERE!
Many of the pre-arranged tournaments on tap had alredy taken place throughout the day so by the time I arrived (3:30), all
that remained was the 3-6-9 elimination and then the Luck of the
Draw Tournament was ready to roll by 5 O’clock. This tournament was run Baker style and each league bowling at Linbrook
had the opportunity to form a five-man team to compete on a
random (luck of the draw) pick against another team. Each team
bowled a one game match and if you won, you advanced. If you
lost, well then you became one of the rooters. I came specifically to support and root on my team -- Rocky Marsh Doubles
and boy, it was stacked with such good bowlers, even had two
Hall of Famers on the roster. Well, we did win our first match
but then fell by the wayside in the next (just no cary) you know
... and alas, just became rooters too. Oh well, it was sure fun and
my team did me proud! The winning team, Kamaaina Club, get
pizza for their entire league and the second place team will be
awarded an ice cream party. I can hardly wait for the next Big
Party; I know my team will do much better!!
The featured match of the day was the Hall of Famers match
between Rose Williams and Glenn Allison vs Eva Munson and
Terry Brent. They had a two-game match and it was soooo exciting to see soooo many strikes and the crowd was fab, rooting
all of them on. It was kinda like attending a hockey game in
person, without the bloodshed. The team of Rose Williams and
Glenn Allison prevailed. Mr. 900 himself hasn’t lost a thing -still smooth and exciting to watch, like a machine!
General Manager John Haveles and the entire staff at Linbrook Bowl are to be congratulated on a job well done; a lot of
work but worth it. I hope they don’t wait another 50 years before
they plan, on a much smaller scale, another such party. We thank
you, Linbrook, for a very fun-filled day. Here’s to another 50
years!!!

Champs in Rocky Marsh Doubles
by Joy McGregor
ANAHEIM—Our Rocky Marsh Doubles league concluded
in fine fashion with sweeps on Friday, August 29th. Season
awards were presented to the high achievers and cash awards to
the members lucky enough to cash; unfortuately, I was NOT one
of them! High men’s average went to John Conway at 229 and
ladies to Janine Ditch at 210. High men’s series to John Conway
at 999 and ladies to Janine Ditch at 948 ... do you see a pattern
here? Men’s high game to Shig Shozi at 298 and ladies to Rose
Williams at 268. Pretty high huh? Also, congratulations to our
most improved bowlers: Gloria Ferrulli at +24 and Kyle Osterman at +38.
Our champs this year - Team #2 (Dirty Old Men) comprised
of Jack Wilson and Terry Brent are not only the best of friends,
they sure do bowl well together; they had high game at 559 and
high series at 1939. Jack finished the league sporting +20 pins
for a 206 average and Terry at +25 for a 228 average. They finished on top by a landslide - 61 games. Just outstanding bowling
from two of the NICEST “Dirty Old Men!”
The entire Rocky Marsh Doubles league says, “THANK
YOU” to Linbrook Bowl for providing yet another, yummy luncheon. Also, kudos to the well-trained and courteous cafeteria
staff; a job well done and the food was delicious.
I truly enjoyed my job as secretary so ‘thank you’ to all you
bowlers who made up this great league, to all our loyal subs and
to the Bowling News for publishing our article each week.
You would think the end of a summer league would signal
the end of summer also but, Mother Nature says, I don’t think
so! And we all know better than to mess with Her. So.....Adieu
to Rocky Marsh summer league: Bonjour 590 Classic winter
league. Start date: Sept 5th at 9:30 am sharp!
I hope everyone had a nice Labor Day and are now ready to
begin - a fresh start, so to speak, in your winter leagues. Have
a productive new bowling season and see y’all right here next
summer. Until then..
