SG. 1839 Treasury Competition Essay. Small 15mm x
15mm essay printed in yellow green depicting a gods
head in the Greek style, affixed by red sealing wax on
an irregular piece of paper from the original
submission form. The essay is tied to the piece by a
black intaglio postmark for "EXETER/JAN/1/1840". Ex
The Royal Philatelic Collection where the remainder of
the submission resides indicating the original entry
number was "22983/39" from a Mr C. Featherstone.
For further reading see the "Penny Post Centenary" by
Samuel Graveson where this example is illustrated
plus further pieces from the original entry. A very
interesting and important essay with an unparralled

unusual bisected examples were issued in Dundee
during a temporary shortage of the 6d value. The
National Telephone Company stamps bearing the
portrait of Colonel Robert Raynsford Jackson
(Chairman of the National Telephone Company)
caused considerable offence at the time of issue due
to the omission of the portrait of Queen Victoria and
were officially withdrawn from use in 1891 at the
request of the Post Master-General. Scarce and
unusual.
