CORDURA® Brand
Originally a rayon developed in 1929 by DuPont chemists, CORDURA® fabric
became an essential material in America’s war effort during WWII. Building upon
research at DuPont, nylon came to replace rayon in the 50s. Maintaining the
notions of strength and durability associated with CORDURA®, the company
transferred the brand name to its superior high tenacity nylon 6.6 fiber in 1966.
In 1977, DuPont researchers discovered a method for dyeing CORDURA® fiber,
leading to a wide variety of new commercial applications. By the early 80s,
CORDURA® held roughly 40% of the luggage market, and had expanded into
sporting apparel and equipment, boots and shoes, golf and ski bags, and
backpacks. Subsequent developments have allowed for lighter weights, as well
as fade- and abrasion-resistance. In 2004, the CORDURA® brand was divested
as part of the INVISTA separation.

For 30 years, CORDURA® fabrics have been recognized worldwide for their toughness and durability. Due to a look
and hand similar to cotton canvas, CORDURA® fabrics have long been popular with sporting good and apparel
manufacturers. Leading companies (like early adopter JanSport) consistently choose CORDURA® fabric for their
high performance apparel, boot, luggage, motorcycle, hunting, military and upholstery products. CORDURA®
EcoMade is the brandʼs sustainability initiative. After decades of being primarily a nylon textile, new CORDURA®
