2013 Schooner Coast Savings Passport Sixty Miles. A Thousand Stories. Your Guide To . . . Kewaunee owoc Manit Algoma Two Rivers Sturgeon 75 Maritime Drive Manitowoc, WI 54220 866.724.2356 120 N. Madison Ave. Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 920.743.5958 Bay Welcome to Wisconsin’s Schooner Coast! We invite you to explore our 60 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. Along the way, you’ll discover maritime treasures, quaint harbor towns, natural water wonders and real Wisconsin gems like old-time supper clubs and small-town main streets. Your tour of the coast follows scenic Hwy. 42 as it hugs Lake Michigan through Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Kewaunee and Algoma. From Algoma, take Hwy. S to Hwy. U to continue along the shoreline and into Sturgeon Bay. The drive includes one WWII submarine, two hardworking tugboats, five rivers that offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, seven towering lighthouses, dozens of shipwreck tales and numerous parks and beaches that range from white sand to smooth pebbles – perfect for skipping stones into Lake Michigan. And, you don’t want to miss the state’s two largest maritime museums that anchor the south and north ends of Wisconsin’s Schooner Coast. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc shares stories of schooners, ship captains, yachts and the 28 submarines built during WWII. The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay captures maritime life on the Door Peninsula – from the shipyards that produced yachts, lake freighters and Navy ships, to notable lighthouses and the restored John Purves tugboat. Enjoy your time along the coast. SchoonerCoast.org | Find us on Facebook. Wisconsin’s Schooner Coast offers beautiful Lake Michigan vistas and many opportunities to swim, fish or simply stroll along the shoreline. The coast is also overflowing with maritime tales from 100 years ago when schooners were built along the shores of Lake Michigan and then crisscrossed the lake, carrying people, supplies and goods. To follow the Schooner Coast, begin in Manitowoc on Maritime Dr. Take Maritime Dr. to Hwy. 42, which leads to Two Rivers, Kewaunee and Algoma. Out of Algoma, take Hwy. S to Hwy. U to Sturgeon Bay. When you reach Sturgeon Bay, turn left onto Hwy. 42/57. Turn right onto Neenah Ave. and follow to Maple St. Turn left onto Maple and right onto Madison Ave. into downtown. Manitowoc Manitowoc is Wisconsin’s Maritime Capitol. The city boasts the largest maritime museum in the state, a fully restored World War II submarine that’s open daily for tours, as well as sleepovers, and the largest car ferry ever to sail Lake Michigan. Each day from late May to mid-October, the 410-foot S.S. Badger steams into town, transporting passengers across one of the world’s largest inland lakes. Back on land, everyone can enjoy the paved six-mile Mariners Trail along Lake Michigan that’s ideal for walking or biking. A lighthouse, shipwreck stories, natural beaches and scenic overlooks are stops along the way. Two Rivers During the summer, the community celebrates its maritime roots by anchoring flower-filled boats along its sidewalks. Take advantage of the town’s two rivers by renting a kayak to explore the area from the water. Along the lake, Neshotah Park is a jewel. It features a beautiful groomed beach and launch area for kayaks. Other attractions include the Rawley Point Lighthouse at Point Beach State Forest and Historic Rogers Street Fishing Village, which celebrates Two Rivers’ French-Canadian fishing heritage. The village also includes the unique wooden Two Rivers Pierhead Lighthouse from 1886, as well as shipwreck artifacts from the Rouse Simmons, known as the Christmas tree ship. 4 Kewaunee Kewaunee packs lots to do into a small area. Start with a tour of the tug Ludington, docked at Harbor Park. The tug served in WWII and later assisted in the construction and maintenance of many harbors on the Great Lakes. Harbor Point Park, on the other side of the harbor, commemorates the first Lake Michigan car ferry that departed Kewaunee in 1892. Relax at Pioneer Park and enjoy its wide sand beach and beautiful views. Finally, don’t miss the white Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse with its bright red roof. Algoma Algoma is known for its striking red lighthouse, but don’t forget about its many sport-fishing opportunities. In fact, the city has a fishing hotline for the latest information, 1-800-626-3090. The award-winning Crescent Beach & Boardwalk has soft sand perfect for playing and taking in expansive Lake Michigan vistas. Visit the Art Dettman Fish Shanty near the Harbor Inn Hotel, one of the last 1920s-era fish shanties on Lake Michigan. And be sure to check out Bearcat’s Fish House for smoked and fresh fish and to get a taste of the city’s commercial fishing industry. Sturgeon Bay Sturgeon Bay is the northern anchor of Wisconsin’s Schooner Coast and the “shipbuilding capital of the Great Lakes.” The city’s Door County Maritime Museum traces the area’s significant shipbuilding history, from handmade canoes to schooners to naval warships. Kids will enjoy a special pirate exhibit and a tour of the tug John Purves. You can also book a cruise on a historic fireboat or the Harbor Lady yacht to explore the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal. The seven-mile shipping canal that connects Sturgeon Bay with Lake Michigan was originally dug in the 1870s. Several famous lighthouses mark the canal, including the Sturgeon Bay Canal Lighthouse, Sturgeon Bay Canal North Pierhead Light and Sherwood Point Lighthouse. 5 EXPLORE A SUB CULTURE AND EXPLORE THE DEPTHS OF WISCONSIN MARITIME HISTORY • Experience life aboard a WWII sub • Stroll the streets of a 19th century port town • Operate locks & sail a boat downriver • Fire up a 65-ton steam engine • Come to River Rendezvous July 4 SUBMARINE TOURS DAILY www.wisconsinmaritime.org 75 Maritime Drive Manitowoc, WI 54220 866-724-2356 Open 7 days a week, year round Get the free mobile app at: http://gettag.mobi Pirates on Sturgeon Bay’s Waterfront!
