President’s Note
Drum roll please: The Emmy goes to _______ …
Well, pretty soon we’ll be able to fill in the blank. By now you must know
the Emmy Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday June 2nd in Fremont,
at the Jonas Jensen Studios. I just got off the phone with Producer Nancy
Guppy and I can promise, you’re gonna love the show! Can’t go wrong with
Nancy at the helm, and host Joel McHale, from the E!Network, waiting in
the wings.
Without question, our chapter produces some of the best television in the
country. I hope you agree that we put on a pretty good Emmy show too. And
tell your friends, who can’t join us June 2nd, they can catch the Emmys on
the internet—live! This year’s Emmy Awards will be streamed courtesy of
Seattle Community College Television. A big thanks to General Manager
Ross Davis for making this happen. I didn’t realize this until I just googled
SCCTV, but they were the first community college television station in the
country to stream live and ‘fulltime’ on the internet. You might want to have
your webmasters link to http://www.scctv.net that night, Emmy night.
To all the nominees, best of luck in bringing home some hardware.

KING 5 Goes High
High--Def
KING 5 News went HD on
Monday, April 16th, making
KING the first station in the
Northwest to produce local news
in high definition.
Of course, the newscasts are not
entirely HD. So, here’s what
elements are really high def:
•
All studio cameras (including
the cameras in the newsroom
and the weather center);
•
All lower thirds and some
full screen and half screen graphics;
•
All weather graphics;
•
The Queen Anne Towercam
Field cameras are 16x9 standard definition. That includes SkyKing, our news
helicopter. Our traffic helicopter is still
4x3 SD.
Some news graphics are up-converted to
16x9 SD. Outside video sources and file
material are mostly 4x3 SD.
Our newscasts on KONG-TV are also
HD now. Before the switch, the KONG
broadcasts were up-converted 4x3 SD.
There’s a general belief that both KING
and KOMO have been doing news in HD
since the 1999, a belief perpetuated by
trade publications which continue to list
both stations among the first to start doing HD local news. But, that is really
mostly TV legend: KING and KOMO
put news on their digital channels in
1999. But, neither station had a control
room capable of handling HD video.
KING bought HD studio cameras and
decided to feed clean studio camera shots
(those without any graphics) in real HD
MONITOR
by wiring them to bypass the SD
switcher in the control room. Everything
else in KING’s newscasts was 4x3 SD
and up-converted for broadcast on the
digital channel. That created an on-air
product that switched back and forth
between 16x9 HD and 4x3 SD. A bit
irritating, but at least some of the content
was actually HD.
KOMO took a different approach, opting for 16x9 standard definition.
KOMO’s studio cameras are also HD
capable. But, the station says it is using
the widescreen SD output. Graphics and
most field cameras are also set to 16x9
SD. KOMO looks very good and many
people with HD sets think KOMO is
doing news in high definition. But, the
final product lacks the clarity and resolution of HD. The newscasts on KIRO-DT
and KCPQ-DT remain up-converted 4x3
SD.
I won’t be going into technical details
because NATAS is not an engineering
organization. Besides, it’s all magic as
far as I am concerned. But, I can tell
you the engineers at KING did a remarkable job building a new control room,
installing new equipment, and rewiring
everything so that we could stay on the
air uninterrupted and then “flip a switch”
overnight to come up in HD.

Our Quantel still stores were
replaced by Thunder clip servers
in February. So, the upgrade to
HD Thunders was relatively simple. We have not taken the step
into HD field video. Our SX
field cameras can be set to 16x9.
So that was a simple matter of
throwing camera switches. Our
Sony NewsBase video server can
also handle 16x9 video. We had
to purge all of the 4x3 video and
re-ingest it 16x9. We also added 16x9
players for the website.
Maintaining correct aspect ratios is the
biggest pain in the process. We looked
at how every regular video source gets
routed for recording and broadcast. But,
it’s not possible to make everything
automatic. Unless you have the luxury
of building a whole new station, video
routing will be an on-going challenge in
the switch to HD production.
Another on-going issue is studio camera
framing. Our sets were designed for
4x3, not 16x9. It’s tough to get shots
without posts in the frame. Even with a
set built for HD, wide screen framing is
likely to pick up unintended shots of
other anchors. In the end, the only way
to shoot talent absolutely cleanly is to
seat the anchors too far apart.
More and more stations are making the
switch to HD every day, especially
around the start of sweeps. Good Morning America, the Today Show, and NBC
Nightly News have all gone HD, although none of them is doing 16x9 field
video yet. In a bit of irony, despite the
costs and headaches, there is little evidence that going HD makes any difference in the ratings.

The main piece of new production
equipment is a Grass Valley Kayak
switcher. The Kayak is a different design than most TDs have ever used. In
the end, our biggest transition challenge
had nothing to do with HD. It was the
time needed for the TDs to get comfortable with the Kayak. We also replaced a

Seattle’s recent viaduct vote gave ample opportunity for SEATTLE CHANNEL
viewers and to me personally to explore the many-sided debate on TV and in the community. The SEATTLE CHANNEL highlighted the viaduct in a three-part series of
special episodes of "City Inside/Out," culminating the Friday before the March 13

election. The large-scale nature of the project inspired the "City Inside/Out" production team to leave the studio, conducting interviews with proponents of each of the two
official options (as well as the third "surface/transit" option) at outdoor locations along the viaduct corridor. We were pleased with the results of this "outdoor" approach to in-depth interviews, and have subsequently been inspired on several occasions to take other "City Inside/Out" episodes beyond our downtown studios.
Also during the run up to the ballot, I was invited by a number of local groups to moderate public viaduct forums. This gave me additional insight for my on-air reporting and moderating, and let me witness firsthand
the passion that the viaduct issue stirred up among ordinary Seattle residents. As the election neared, we devoted several evenings to encore broadcasts of these forums (and "City Inside/Out" viaduct episodes), and we
also presented Video On Demand of all our viaduct broadcasts on a special web page at
http://www.seattlechannel.org/issues/viaduct.asp.
It was a whirlwind couple of months, and it left me with the distinct impression that participatory democracy-if not a clear mandate about what to do--is alive and well in Seattle. It's unclear when or if another issue will
generate so much debate in Seattle, but we look forward to the day that something does.

SEATTLE CHANNEL has won the Public Technology Institute's 2006-2007 Technology Solutions Award for the television and
Internet convergence demonstrated by
the new ART ZONE programming
block. The Public Technology Institute's annual competition rewards local governments that can
demonstrate how they apply technology to improve service delivery, reduce operating costs or create new
revenue opportunities. An independent panel of judges selected the winners from across the country. Read

Gauntt is the new News Director of
KOMO TV.
Gauntt has over 23 years of experience in
the broadcast industry, most recently as
Vice President and News Director of
WTXF-TV (FOX) in Philadelphia, and
Assistant News Director of WTTG-TV in
Washington, DC (FOX). She also has
held news positions at WBAL-TV in Baltimore and WVUE-TV in New Orleans
(Hearst), KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City
and KUSA-TV in Denver (Gannett), and
KCNC-TV in Denver (NBC).
