Sumitomo Hansen capabilities
In March 2011, Sumitomo
In House Engineering &
Design Team
Heavy Industries finalised
the purchase of the
industrial gear division
of Hansen Transmissions
International NV.
In Australia, the
Sumitomo & Hansen
entities were merged and
in October 2013, a new
company Sumitomo (SHI)
Hansen Australia Pty. Ltd.
was born.
The merging of these
two major Gearbox
manufacturing entities
allows Sumitomo
Hansen to now offer the
most comprehensive
range of mechanical
power transmission
products available, all
this supported by years
Our Engineering team are able to
design a complete drive package
to suit your requirements; this
includes the selection of all high
quality major drive components
such as Lubrication, Cooling and
Braking systems when required,
High speed and low speed
couplings, Fluid couplings and
any electronic monitoring devices.
The design of Baseplates is also
done in house, checked using our
own Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
program, then checked by an
independent source to ensure the
bestfitforpurposedrivepackage
is supplied.
In-House Manufacturing
and Assembly
Whilst core gearbox components
are imported from our factories
around the world, many special
items are manufactured
locally in our Rowville, Victoria
machine shop section. Special
shafting, labyrinth / taconite
seals, motor adaptors, casing
covers and adaptor plates are
designed, quality checked
and manufactured in-house.
Assembly is then carried out by
factory trained technicians with
Sumitomo Hansen’s strict quality
standards and manufacturers
recommended tolerances adhered
to during the assembly process.
Premium Drive Service (PDS)
This latest service to our
customers will ensure that all
repairs are carried out by trained
technicians, who know our
products well. When repairing
Sumitomo or Hansen units
Historical records are always at
hand and special considerations
taken into account during the
original manufacture are most
importantly again taken into
consideration. For other brands
of Gear boxes or Gear motors
original makers parts will be
used wherever possible.
A 2 year warranty is standard
for all new parts and our
workmanship.

craftsmanship, this drive is now in service, approx. 22 tonnes in size.
From unit arrival for strip, inspection and quote to unit ready for return to service, the highest level of
workmanship is carried out in the workshop. A 12 month warranty on parts and workmanship is standard.

Inspections
Standard Inspections (Strip & Quote)
n Unit Cleaned before inspection.
n Unit opened & Inspection of gear train.
n Oil samples taken.
n Visual Inspection of casing and shafting.
n If no major damage detected repair cost calculated.
n Quotation will be based on standard replacement
of all bearings and seals, gear train will be cleaned,
casing cleaned and blasted if required before
assembly and repaint.
Detailed Inspection
n If evidence of Component damage, i.e. Surface fatigue,
Pitting, Spalling, shaft distress or breakage is found,
then a more detailed inspection is recommended.
n All components are stripped and inspected, to
determine the cause of damage.
n Non-destructive testing can be carried out including
case alignment checks
n Case / Bore alignment checks will be carried out to
ensure all shafts & gears are true.
n A detailed fixed price quotation will follow. (No
hidden costs)
n All labour & parts will be covered by our Premium
Drive Service 18 month guarantee.

How it works:
Dedicated report tablets in the Service workshops have a program
written specifically for Sumitomo Hansen service needs.
The technicians can strip the gear box, list serial numbers, model
of the gear unit etc., at the same time take photographic evidence
with the tablet, which saves it straight to the report.
Each section of the reduction ratio and its components are able to
be photographed, notations made, again it then saves it straight
into the report all done via the tablet.
The tablet will automatically send this report, once the
service department finishes assessing the unit/repair, with
recommendations directly to the sales team, who then prepare the
final report, with repair recommendations and pricing etc., finally a
quotation is generated along with all photos which are included in
the quotation.
The report is automatically given a register number and is then
filed for future reference.
