This Issue President’s Report Sponsors All the Goss AGM Katherine Festival Track Day Spotlight, Alan Stalker Club & Member details “Trading Post” “What’s Happening” The official newsletter of the Classic Holden Car Club NT Volume 7/09 1 2 3 4 5 7 9 10 11 12 www.classic-holden-nt.org [email protected] www.shannons.com.au PO Box 36463 Winnellie NT 0821 Presidents Report It’s been a very busy month for the Club with the Annual General Meeting, the Katherine Festival run, the Shannon’s Track Day in Darwin and the T Bar Cars Father’s Day Sale car display at Coolalinga. In fact this addition of the Club Newsletter is bursting at the seams with all the information from those events. The only disappointing issue arising from these club events is that it is the same club stalwarts that put the time into supporting these events and doing the hard yards to ensure they are successful. It would be nice to see some new faces of club members and their cars at these events to not only ease the load on the regulars but for them to experience the pleasure of seeing the reaction of the public to their ‘Classic’ Holden’s and to experience the pride in promoting their Club. From the Editor The AGM has come and gone. The only real change on the committee line up is that Garry Quinn took my place on the committee, as you all know I stood down as President in March this year. Garry Quinn has also been nominated and has accepted a position on the Technical Advisory Committee with MVR and will be representing the club on any vehicle modification. A stack of us went drag racing at Hidden Valley at the July “Off Street” Meet and everyone had a ball. We did it once again in August as well, this is very addictive, check it all out in “All the Goss”. The Katherine Festival was a blast once again, this is one of my favourite runs; a chance to get away for the weekend with my pride and joy, check out page five for details. The Management Committee of the Club look forward to a greater participation of members at future events. It is a great Club and members should be proud to be involved in its activities. I think the Shannon’s open day is one of he most popular events on the calendar, people talk about this event all year and it gets the young at heart to have a few exhilarating laps of the famous Hidden Valley Raceway, check it out on page seven. The next big event on the calendar is the rural rally on Sunday September 20th. The rally will finish at a rural property at midday where an afternoons enjoyable entertainment with food and music is available to all. Further details are on page 12 under ‘What’s Happening’. “Classic’s and Coffee” We had around eight CHCC cars in a field of 24 (and a heap of bikes), on the last Sunday in July, a nice casual morning and the bacon and egg sanga’s were sensational. Unfortunately the Shannon’s track day clashed in August. “Nostalgia Cruise Night” is also getting bigger and better with a heap more members joining in. Check out the “what’s happening” section for the next run. Cheers Wilko See you at the next event. CHCC News Steve Moller September 2009 1 “On the Web” “CHCC Sponsors” www.rarespares.net.au Plenty to see on this website and it has great set of links to other sites as well. As you all know, you just can’t restore a car without Rare Spares, cruise through this site and check out what’s on offer but be sure to place your order through your local store at Coconut Grove. This is where you get the club discounts and Malcolm, Peter and Ashley are always happy to help. The Black EK won “Best Modified 1960 – 69” and “Best Car of Show – Peoples choice”………yep, he’s still smiling. He met with fellow members Bill McLeod (FJ Sedan), Laurie (FJ Ute) and Paul Cilka with his sensational HXLE We had seven members attend the “Off Street” meeting on the 31st of July and five members at the August meet. Both nights were an absolute blast. It can be a bit daunting doing something new. As most of us were new to this the officials were very helpful and made everyone feel welcome and I’d like to give a plug the HVDRA officials and the “Beat the Heat” team. These guys are fantastic!!! On the first night, I spent the evening racing against Michelle Benton who consistently beat me throughout the night. My best time was 17.08 with a reaction time of 1.3 seconds!!! Definitely room for improvement. If I fix up my reaction times I should be seeing 16 second runs at the next meet. Not bad for a smoky 30 year old ‘stock as a rock’ 308, this car recorded 16.9 second quarters new. Michelle Benton beat me in the “Dial in” competition and continued winning right up till the finals. She earned a “summons” (free entry) to appear at the next meeting and you couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. Paul also got another trophy for the LE “Best 1970 – 79”. He has done a fair bit of work on it since the last Extravaganza, especially on the motor. Race ported heads and intake manifold, new Barry Grant 750 double pumper, new dizzy, new interior and the list goes on. In Paul’s words, “now she absolutely flies”. Everyone else had a blast as well, I think it was great to have Club cars all lined up together. Members gathered for moral support and the camaraderie was amazing, here are the results from both meets; Shane McAlpine; HQ GTS 11.48, Kevin Alchin HJ Prem 13.20, Steve Moller; VE SS Ute 13.4, Kym Benton; HX 350 14.34, Mike Brideson One Tonner 14.94, Richard Austin HG Ute 15.47, Michelle Benton; HJ GTS 16.18, Wilko Van Syl; HZ GTS 17.08 Wilko Van Syl HG GTS 19.67. I have to say that this is a great night out (even just as a spectator/pit crew) and all officials and competitors are friendly and sociable. CHCC News September 2009 3 “Joe Horvath for his HT Monaro” “Annual General Meeting” Well another AGM has come and gone. I thought I was running late until Steve and Jan pulled up beside me on the way to the rendezvous at the Esplanade. After we were all assembled we all went on a quick (some say lightning fast) tour of town led by ‘Speedy GoneGrumpy’. I was pretty much at the head of the pack but got lost at the first set of lights but I understand some members enjoyed a quick glimpse of the waterfront, if they didn’t blink that is. The not so big secret stop over at Jim Coopers “Auto Evolution Centre”. A truly remarkable display of a world class collection of Fords. Those who had never seen it before were gob smacked. It was just as impressive for me as he has extended the shed since the last time I saw the display. At hidden Valley we sat down to business at hand, the 10th annual AGM of the Classic Holden Car Club NT Inc. With no General business tabled it made for a relatively quick meeting. The major change for the day was in the election of a new Committee member Garry Quinn who was elected un-opposed. Garry replaced Wilko Van Syl (me). All other positions remained and were also elected un-opposed. CHCC News The General meeting after the AGM is a chance for members to see how the club runs. It is set up as a regular committee meeting. The only difference is the addition of the presentation of the Annual Club trophies from the V8 Supercar display (proudly sponsored by Shannon’s Insurance), the winners were Bet Original Pre 59 – Harry Mellios Best Modified Pre 59 – John Denton Best Original 60 – 69 – Joe Horvath Best Modified 60 – 69 – Garry Quinn Best Original 70-79 – Elise Prince Best Modified 70-79 – Kerry Kyriacou Best Original 80-89 – Peter Madigan Best Overall – Garry Quinn “Garry Quinn for his black EK” We were also presented a club banner from Rare Spares. Last year Rare Spare put on a promotion for all car clubs, the idea was that they would keep a tally on purchases made by members at their local store, once we hit the $5K mark we scored a banner. Remember you just can’t restore a car without Rare Spares’ pop into the Coconut Grove store and say G’day. September 2009 4 “Katherine Festival” Had a couple bail out of the Katherine Festival road trip at the last minute, Alan Stalker couldn’t finish replacing the clutch in the XU1. I had a call from Peter Skeehan the Friday arvo saying that his EH Van had also done a clutch, he rocked up at Wishart siding with his EH ute but it sprung a leak in the fuel tank and that was the end of that. It was great to see a good turn out of cars from MVEC, CFCC and CHCC at Wishart Siding. I think there were two cruises down to Katherine that morning, those who set a leisurely pace and the Muscle Cars. Well they needed the exercise and when you have both GT's and Monaro's together it is a time to flex those muscles. The Presentation was held that afternoon with Shannon’s John Palamountain, MVEC Katherine’s Iain Locke and the help of local personality Ben Dark. The winners for the club were Gary Doig won "Best Australian" with his immaculate HR X2 and Garry Quinn won "Best Modified" and "Peoples Choice" and special effort prizes sponsored by Wildcat Spares, Kevin Alchin "Best Displayed" with his HJ Premier, and Garry Quinn. On top of that all those who entered in the event received a medal in appreciation. I have been collecting these medals over the years and I have a swag of them now!!! After the show it was a quick stop off at the bottle shop, and a trip out to Peter and Sandy's, just as well we went there earlier in the day as I drove right past their house to the end of the road and dragged Greg Coates along beside me. Anyway we ended up at the right place and set up camp in the tranquil Rural setting, Peter and Sandy live on a beautiful 20 acre block just south of town and it was the perfect place for the evenings entertainment. We all rocked into town around the same time and after checking in to various locations it was on for a fantastic BBQ at the Katherine PowerWater Social club, great food courtesy of MVEC Katherine. This is a great venue and it was great to catch up with old friends again. For me it was also a great opportunity to nip down to the Hot Springs for a quick swim. Entertainment it was, around fifty people gathered to view some short films of MVEC Katherine events and the main feature was Eric Bana's "Live the Beast", (you must hire this out!!!). The entertainment was shadowed by the sumptuous feast put on by MVEC, tantalising Stew and Damper in generous proportions and desserts to die for. Sensational stuff!!!!. It made it hard to fit in the beer afterwards (but I managed). It was some time after midnight when I finally staggered to my tent. From there it was a cruise through town (and just out of town) to check out Peter and Sandy Balfour’s block (just in case we got lost later that afternoon) and then of to the Civic Centre to set up for the Car Show. And what a show it was, numbers were a little down on last year but I would have guessed that there were around 50 cars and bikes on display, I would also have to say that the quality of those cars were better. All up there were 12 CHCC cars in amongst the display. CHCC News September 2009 5 “Our Hosts, Peter and Sandy” I would like to put in a big thank you not only to event organiser Bill Harding, but all of MVEC Katherine crew for putting on such a fabulous weekend. I urge you all to put the Katherine Festival event in your calendar for next year, those who have never been just don't know what it's about (ask someone who has). Cheers Wilko We were woken at first light with the blaring of AC/DC, Garry thought it would be quite amusing!!!. I am a firm believer of the motto "if it's too loud, your too old" but I think I was feeling pretty old that morning, I’m sure some Darwin MVEC people were as well ☺ After packing up camp we made our way to Kumbidgee Tea Rooms for their famous all you can eat breakfast's, just sensational stuff and a great setting round the man made lake. “Colin and Wendy at Kumbidgee Tea Rooms” After breakfast w few of us made our way to Denis Hannah’s 100 acre block around 30k south of town (yes it was a bit of a round trip). This place just blew me away. It was like travelling back in time and it was just like a museum, but it was not just Holden's that caught my eye. There were Land Rovers aplenty, and those old Bedford trucks will have a special spot in my heart, they were used as "Line" trucks back when I was an apprentice, and I used to sit in an old steel dog box in the back going from job to job, back in the days of wooden ladders and leather line belts!!!! I counted around 15 Holden’s and several 44 gallon drums full of parts. Just check out some of these photos of Dennis's place, CHCC News September 2009 6 “Shannon’s Track Day” This is one of our most popular events and members wait in anticipation all year for it. This is one of my favourites, the chance to some spirited laps of the famous Hidden Valley circuit. “The Wagland’s at the Parap lights” All in all it was a good day out with well over a dozen Holden’s on the track, it was a first for quite a few new members as well, Everyone I spoke to told me they had an absolute blast on the day and it was great to see members enjoying themselves. “Nick Simeon flat out down the straight” The day kicked off early at the Qantas Hangar where we all signed our lives away and were given instructions for the day. Then we set off for a tour of the town en route to the race track. After a couple of orientation laps we then assembled in the pit car park for our second briefing. With 90 cars turning up this event is getting bigger every year, not surprising really. As such the event has been getting fine tuned every year as well and I think the organisers have got it spot on this time. “A gathering of petrol heads” It’s still three laps a go, but instead of a warm up lap you take off in 10 second intervals straight out of the pits. This sped things up no end and although I only had two runs in the HZ, some others got a whole lot more. I think the best part of it was that if you were insured with Shannon’s you were insured on the track!!! As I said, I only had two goes, David Finch informed me that I had a buckled rear wheel, (yeah, I can feel it) and after some late night repairs to a snapped clutch cable the night before I wasn’t taking any chances. As per last year the club put on the BBQ for everyone, sausages and satay’s with a lovely selection of salads to keep everyone fed and happy. A huge thank you goes out to John Palamountain and Laurie Feehan and family for putting on this great event, can’t wait for next year. “The Committee hard at it again” “Richard Austin on a body roll in turn one” CHCC News September 2009 7 “Car Trouble” “T Bars Display” The T Bar Cars Father Day Sale is an annual event. Trevor the Proprietor of T Bar cars is a Classic Holden Car Club member and also a sponsor and prize donor of the club. The sale was held on Saturday 5th September and included a free sausage sizzle which was operated by Trevor’s ‘Family’. “A lovely line up in front of Trevor’s Store” All the Goss overflow; I have to thank my lucky stars that I am a member of an Automobile Association, you never know when you are going to need it and it was my turn to enlist in the services offered by AANT the other day. Had lunch with my daughter in town on Saturday afternoon and whilst coming through the Mitchell st lights the clutch cable snapped on the HZ, I coasted far enough to be able to park opposite Melaleuca on Mitchell. I called up AANT and a mechanic would arrive in 45mins. I though oh well there could be worst places to break down. The club assembled seven vehicles for display to support the event as follows; John Denton Modified 48-215 Sedan Ian Campbell EH Station Wagon Garry Quinn Modified EK Sedan Alan Stalker LJ Torana XU1 Garry Colliver Pontiac Parisiene Sedan George Shepherd VZ Commodore Ute Steve Moller VE Commodore Ute A special thanks to these members as it is important to not only support club members but especially sponsors of the club in their business promotions. The day started at 8.00am to set up and finished at 1.45pm. There were quite a few admirers of the club vehicles and Trevor had a very good turn over for the day offering a range of discounts on his stock. I looked in the shop about six times and then succumbed (which I usually do) and purchased a 1:18 scale yellow Pontiac Firebird modified by Car Kraft with 4 wheel discs and 455 cubic inch V8. After a few minutes I get a Ahoy from the upstairs bar across the road, a few blokes were rambling on and I got the blurry message they were coming down to take a look. I though oh shit here we go!!! These guys were travelling around Australia in Panel vans and they parked them all in a row for a photo shoot, One was a 308 HZ Sandman in very good condition and the other a WB that has had some battle scars from its round Australia trip but it sported a blue 308, 5 speed Supra box and Commodore disc brake rear end. These guys were fantastic and we had a good old natter. “3 wise men drinking ‘cool aid’ on the porch” The club cars were displayed around the shop front and club members relaxed in the shade of the veranda eating sausages, drinking cool drinks, answering questions about their cars and doing other things like ‘standing on the corner and watching all the girls go by’! I recommend that all club members interested in model cars, trucks, military vehicles, trains and planes visit Trevor’s shop at Coolalinga as a club member discount is applied. If Trevor doesn’t have what you want in stock he can get it for you. CHCC News The mechanic rocked up and said that he had a call for a 'non starter', he couldn't fix the clutch so he organised a tow truck. Once home Mary Louise and myself spent a couple of hours under the dash making temporary repairs to the clutch cable. We had to get it going for Shannon’s Club “Track” day the next morning!!! September 2009 8 Classic Holden Car Club Spotlight Owner Model/Type Exhaust Interior Brakes Year Engine Transmission Suspension Paint Alan and Julie Stalker LJ XU1 TPL Custom Original Disc Front Drum Rear Brief History We purchased the XU1 in 1975 for $3300 after writing off a Torana LJ – S model on Belconnen Way, Canberra. At this time the Torana was our only car and it was used for everything from towing a trailer on camping trips to the South Coast to driving to Perth to study for two years then back to Canberra. The first restoration to the car was done in 1982 when the metallic paint crazed. I had the paint taken back to bare metal and painted white as well as having the motor and gearbox fully reconditioned. We moved to Darwin in 1983 and again was our only car for quite a few years before we succumbed to the purchase a Toyota Hilux 4WD. Unfortunately the harsh Darwin climate wasn’t kind on the paintwork, it had started to develop “bubbles” under the paint. It wasn’t until July 2006 that we decided to fully restore the Torana back to its original condition. Current Restoration (July 2006 – March 2008) The car was completely stripped of every nut and bolt and I made up a frame on wheels to assist with moving the frame around. Working on it a weekends this wasn’t finished until end of 2006. The frame was transported to AJ Autobody where Adam commenced the task of stripping back the body to bare metal and fixing minor rust and dings that accumulated over the years. The shell was primed with 2-pack epoxy with the final 2-pack finish and clear. Colour was back to the original Dublin Green. CHCC News November 1972 202 with triple Stromberg’s M21 4 speed Standard Dublin Green The motor was sent to my cousin’s business in Canberra (BERCO) who specialises in restoration of older cars. It was fully reconditioned with a few extra internal bits and pieces to increase the horsepower. (Haven’t had it on the dyno yet, but would put it at about 240bhp.) All suspension components were sandblasted back to bare metal and coated with POR15 black enamel before assembly with new suspension rubbers, bushes and steering components. Got the shell back from painting in June 2007, that’s when the real work (and frustration began). The motor was assembled onto the front suspension ready for installing from underneath. We had a slight “hiccup” when installing the motor when my “assistant”, left a jack near the body when we were lowering it down which meant it had to go back to the panel beater for a “touch up”. All the seats had new skins made in Melbourne from the original patterned material and installed on the seat frames by Kevin at Seat City. The hood lining was also replaced before the front and rear windows were installed. New carpet was installed. All door, window etc rubbers/runners were replaced and dash pad was restored. The exhaust system was installed by TPL Exhaust Shop. It is a 21/2” mandrel bend with extractors and twin pipe muffler. The car was finally completed in 15th March 2008, with the first start up on 28th.
