SOUTHPAW NEWSLETTER April 2011 www.NALG.org THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LEFT-HANDED GOLFERS NALG/USA BOARD 2011 US LEFTY CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR WILMINGTON, NC The National Association of Left Handed Golfers (NALG) announced at the World Left Handed Championship, held in late September at Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Florida, that the 2011 National Left Handed Championship will be held at Magnolia Greens in Leland, NC on May 8-12, 2011. Leland is across the river from Wilmington, North Carolina and just one hour north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The tournament, consisting of 4 rounds, is Joe Brogdon (GA) open to all lefthanders, male and female, regardless of handicap. There will be 4 Divisions: 478.477.9264 Championship, Open, Senior, and Masters (Super Senior). A separate Ladies Division will be added if 6 or more lefty ladies sign up; otherwise they will be flighted with the men. All DiviFrank Hunter (NC) sions except the Championship and Ladies will be flighted after two rounds, based on scores. 336.956.6868 You don’t have to be a great golfer to participate and win in this tournament. The field for the tournament will be limited to 120 golfers. Currently, about 30 golfers have signed up, so there Don Lightburn (NM) is plenty of room. Details may be found on the NALG website: www.nalg.org. We’re looking 505.286.8667 forward to seeing you in May! For more information contact Jim Bradley at (910) 383-0339, (910) 620-0825 or e-mail: [email protected]. A total of 17 Matches were played over the three days on Terra Lago’s North and South Courses. The Teams (North and South) were made up geographically with players from the U.S. and Canada. Several of the players will represent the U.S. and International Teams in the 2012 James Cup International scheduled for St Andrews, Scotland. The blustery weather conditions on Day Two gave these players a preview of what they may face in Scotland. The Day One Matches went to the South by a score of 8 to 7. Day Two the North took the lead picking up 8½ points to the South’s 6½. Going into the final day with the North holding a lead of 15½ to 14½ they needed 10½ of the 21 points available to close out the South. The South had other ideas by picking up 12½ of the points for a narrow 27 to 24 victory. Had the North picked up 1½ points more the Matches would have ended all square forcing a playoff. Congratulations go to both teams and the Captains: South ~ Doug Wallace and Ron Griffin / North ~ Dennis Bruneau and Don Bold. Win or lose the purpose of the James Cup Events is to promote and support the spirit of lefty golf: keen competition, sportsmanship and camaraderie. Submitted by, James Cup Committee NALG Looking For a Good Secretary-Treasurer At the 2010 annual Board meeting of the NALG, held at Walt Disney World® Resort in conjunction with the combined US National Championship and the World Left-Handed Championship, Jim Bradley, the current SecretaryTreasurer of the NALG, announced he would be retiring from his position as of the first of June, 2011. Jim took over the position a little over two years ago when Wally Jones suddenly retired and no volunteers were waiting in the wings. He has been serving as Secretary-Treasurer for both the NALG and the Carolina Division of the NALG. The Board is actively seeking nominations to replace Jim. If you are interested in the position or know of someone that might be interested and would do a good job, drop a line, send an e-mail, or call one of the Board members. This is a great opportunity to get involved at the grass roots level of the organization. Obituaries Fred A. Oehler, a 54-Year resident of Concord, CA, passed away unexpectedly on June 11th, 2010. (Published on June 20, 2010, Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA) In memory of Fred playing his last event with the Nor-Cal Lefties at the Match Play event in May 2010, the Association has named the tournament going forward as the Oehler Cup. 2 SOUTHPAW NEWSLETTER April 2011 18th Annual Dave McCall Southwest Shootout “INVITATIONAL” Lefty-Partner Format Albuquerque, NM / May 25, 26 & 27 2011 Entry Form Return this completed form with check (please print or type) to: Donald Lightburn, 40 Woodlands Drive, Tijeras, NM 87059, to contact (505-286-8667) Field limited to first 72 teams LEFTY______________________________________________________________________ ADDRESS___________________________________________________________________ CITY / STATE / ZIP___________________________________________________________ PHONE (________) _____________________________________SHIRT SIZE (__________) GHIN NUMBER_____________________________USGA HCP.
