The Championship was based in Dundee on the golf rich east coast of Scotland, with play on some of the oldest links courses in the world. The courses chosen were Montrose Medal, Monifieth Medal, Panmure and Scotscraig. (left to right): Jim Pfrogner, Masters Champion, Tony Broadhurst, WALG President All of them are Open Qualifiers when the Doug Crosby, WALG Chairman, Tadashi Matsuda, Senior Chairman Jarrod Freeman, Open Champion, Open is held at either Carnoustie or St. Andrews. Not pictured: Nerida Gregory, Ladies Champion The group enjoyed the experience of renewing friendships from the previous World Championship (held in Florida in 2010) and making new friends during the week. To kick off the week, the Welcome Reception included traditional Scottish bagpipes and dancing. During the week the weather was a definite factor, with the high temperature many days below normal and the precipitation most days above normal. The last two days of competition saw so much rain that two holes at one course were closed by club management, due to flooding. Overall, the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie prevailed among the golfers and guests. Winners in the four divisions include Jarrod Freeman (Australia) as Open Champion, Tadashi Matsuda (Japan) as Senior Champion, Jim Pfrogner (United States) as Masters Champion, and Nerida Gregory (Australia) as Ladies Champion. A complete list of scores will be available on the NALG website: www.NALG.org. Congratulations to all! 2013 WALG CHAMPIONSHIP During the closing Awards Banquet of the 2012 WALG Championship, the location for the 2013 WALG Championship was revealed. Previously, the 2013 Championship had been slated for Japan; however, whether or not to hold the tournament in Japan in 2013 had been a big issue after the earthquake, tsunami and especially the subsequent accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants. The WALG Delegates decided at their meeting, held during the 2012 Championship week, to change the location of the 2013 Championship and hopefully return to Japan in the future. Accordingly, the 2013 WALG Championship will be held in Belek, Turkey from September 7-14, 2013. Plans are still being finalized for the tournament and details will be available on the WALG website (www.WALG.org) as soon as possible. “Email instead of Snail Mail – The NALG Board of Directors decided at its Annual Meeting in May to discontinue the printing and mailing of the quarterly newsletter, effective following the July 2012 issue. Henceforth it will be sent to you via email, or you may find it on the NALG website: www.nalg.org <http://www.nalg.org> , under the “News” heading. The newsletter issue dates will remain the same: January, April, July, and October. We’re very excited about this year, which has us headquartered at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, Nevada, because we’ve scheduled some excellent venues for this 54-hole championship event. By popular demand we are once again returning to Edgewood Tahoe and have booked Wednesday’s round at this world-class resort on the shores of South Lake Tahoe. In addition, we will be playing Dayton Valley, an excellent golf course in Dayton, NV which has been host to a PGA Tour qualifier every year since 1995 and finally The Lakes Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club and Resort just north of Minden, NV. ENTRIES ARE LIMITED AND CLOSE AUGUST 13 We have set aside enough spots for 60 teams so don’t delay in getting signed up. Single entries will be accepted from both lefties and righties. TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND FEATURED GOLF COURSE The format of play will be team best ball gross and net. The tournament starts off on Tuesday morning with play at Dayton Valley, a beautifully maintained course designed by Arnold Palmer. On Wednesday we will be treated to an exceptional experience, Edgewood Tahoe. If you haven’t played here it’s a must for anyone’s bucket list. With its beautiful scenery, the 8th hole with its double green and the final holes played right along the lake’s shore it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. We conclude the Championship on Thursday at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club and Resort Lakes Course, a challenging course just a few minutes from our tournament headquarters. All three rounds of the 54-Hole Championship will be shotgun starts; starting at 8:30am. If there are any changes in the starting times, they will be posted after the close of entries August 13 on the Norcal Lefties Website at www.leftygolf.org. TOURNAMENT HEADQUARTERS The Headquarters for the Championship will be the Carson Valley Inn and Casino. They are located at 1627 Hwy 395 N, Minden, NV (www.carsonvalleyinn.com). Please make reservations by calling their Group Reservations Department at (800) 321-6983 ext. 1 and use the group code “502892”. The group rate for single/double occupancy varies from $75.00-$89.00 per night, based on room type, plus taxes. They also have a motor lodge right next to the Casino with rooms priced at $65.00 plus tax. In addition, they have an RV park with pricing per space based on size of motor home, maximum rate $37.00 plus tax. Reservations must be made by August 15th. Any reservations after this date will only be accepted on a space and rate availability basis. HANDICAPS AND CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS (All Championship results will be posted at www.leftygolf.org) The Championship will be played using verifiable August 15 handicaps. Entries must specify your current index. Players having indexes provided by a source other than the USGA's GHIN System or the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) must contact Vic Frediani by e-mail at [email protected] or call (408) 973-1173 with their August index before August 15. Players having indexes through the GHIN system or the SCGA do not need to report their August indexes. Flight position will be determined by team handicap. When there is a differential of more than 10 strokes (based on course handicap) between partners, the higher handicap player’s handicap will be reduced to maintain the 10 stroke maximum team differential. Awards will be presented to the overall field low gross and net teams. Flight awards with a full field of players will be presented to first place low gross in each flight and first through fourth place net in each flight. Team awards are limited to one per team. There will also be daily closest-to-pin contests at all par 3 holes. OPTIONAL GAMING CONTESTS (Payoffs will be made at Awards Banquet or by postal mail.) Gross Deuces Game (3 day buy-in $30 per player) Gross and/or Net Skins (3 day buy-in $30 per player for each game) Buy-in must be for all three days and will take place at the Player Registrations. 16 (continued on reverse) SOUTHPAW NEWSLETTER July 2012 SENIORS The Championship will allow seniors to request forward tees. Team members must be 65 years of age or older. Teams who sign up for the forward set of tees will be eligible for the overall Low Net Team Championship Award but not overall Low Gross Team Championship Award. DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICES GPS – Distance Measuring Devices are allowed during the competition. Information obtained by such devices can be exchanged between players without penalty. CART POLICES Carts: 90-degree rule, subject to course and weather conditions. WELCOME RECEPTION AND TOURNAMENT REGISTRATIONS The Welcome Reception and Registration for all tournament participants, spouses and guests will be held Monday evening in the Banquet Room at the Carson Valley Inn and Casino convention center from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Please join us for socializing, cocktails and great hors d'oeuvres. A no host bar will be available. LADIES WINE AND FOOD PAIRING CLASS LUNCHEON Ladies, plan to attend the Ladies Luncheon and Raffle on Wednesday, September 5th at the Tahoe Ridge Winery & Marketplace across the street from the hotel. This will be a five-course wine and food pairing with explanation of how each wine pairs with each food item. The raffle will immediately follow with the highlight being Anne’s famous “Money Hat”. Sign up on the entry. BASQUE FAMILY DINNER NIGHT Wednesday night we have a real treat for those looking for some fun and camaraderie with their fellow comrades. We have reserved an evening at the Carson Valley Country Club Restaurant. It’s a basque family style dinner and will include: the daily soup, green salad, side dish, vegetables, french fries, entrees (steak, lamb, chicken and salmon), ice cream, non-alcoholic beverages and wine. It’s sure to be a fun time for all and guaranteed nobody will go away hungry. GUEST GOLF Guest golf will be available as part of the shotgun start for the Championship. Because Edgewood is played on Wednesday and some guests requested playing it last year we’ve decided to offer golf each day this year. Guests can choose any of the days they wish to play. Sign up on the entry. AWARDS BANQUET AND RAFFLE This years Banquet and Raffle will be held Thursday evening, September 6th in the Banquet Room at the Carson Valley Inn and Casino.
