Local 130’s Randy Barrowman
wins at UA Nationals Race
Never mind who is the best plumber (That would be you, of course!). Let’s talk about who is the fastest
plumber in the whole UA. His name is Randy Barrowman, and he is a journeyman member of Chicago
Plumber’s Local 130, UA. The 29-year-old amateur racer from Joliet, Ill., was one of more than a couple dozen UA members who got the opportunity to climb behind the wheel and compete at the Union
Plumber, Fitters, Welders and HVAC Techs Nationals on June 4-7. The National Hot Rod
Association (NHRA) conducted the annual drag racing series over several days at the Route 66
Raceway in Joliet. The United Association was a prime sponsor of the series in Illinois as well as the
NHRA Supernationals, held the following week in New Jersey.
The special “Customer Race” picked 32 spectators, most of them UA members attending the races, to
compete in an all-out elimination series. It took six races to discover the winner. It was Randy. How
did he do it?
It wasn’t really a matter of what you drove or how fast you went, he reasoned. The cars – new Pontiac
G6 models – were identically equipped. You stomped on the accelerator and the car propelled you from
zero to 90 mph in the few seconds it took to get down the quarter mile track. “There was nothing special about the cars,” he said.
Randy believes he came out ahead in large part due to the way he lined up in each of his six races. “I
waited until the other car staged (lined up) first,” Randy explained. The starting “tree” flashes two yellow lights before the green go signal. “If you wait for the green light, you basically lost the race,” he
said. Does that mean he left the gate early? Not at all, Randy added. By lining up last, a practice known
as “deep staging,” he simply put himself in a better position to anticipate and get the edge over the other
driver when the race started.

UA Celebrates Inside the Winners Circle
ROUTE 66 NATIONALS JUNE 4-7, 2009 IN JOLIET
The United Association not only drew attention as a key sponsor of the National Hot Rod Association’s
(NHRA) Route 66 Nationals but also as a sponsor of the fastest dragster in the Top Fuel Eliminator race.
Local 130 plumber Randy Barrowman with the Pontiac G6
that took him to the Winner’s Circle.

Should You Pay
Reduced
Union Dues?
The UA-sponsored car prepares to race.
WEAR THE BUTTON
EVERY DAY ON THE JOB.
Did you know that union dues may be reduced for
Plumbers Local 130, UA members who have worked
less than 170 hours in the current quarter and:
1) are injured and cannot physically perform the
duties of a plumber (must have medical documentation from a physician), or
2) are unemployed and actively seeking employment. A member must contact the union hall at
least weekly to put their name on the out-ofwork list.
Finally, reduced dues are accepted only in the last month of
a quarter. Please don’t assume that the union knows who is
or isn’t qualified to pay reduced dues. If you believe you
qualify, you must request a dues reduction. For more information, contact the union hall, 312-421-1010.

Letter from
the Chairman
here are many people in
management and labor
who are trustees or fiduciaries
on various funds and boards
related to our industry. I have
heard from many people that
some decisions made by these
boards favor management or
labor. All decisions must be
Craig Thomas
made, first and foremost, for the benefit of the
plan participants.
JESSICA ALBERGO is a senior at Elk Grove High School, where she earned the Honor
Roll Award for seven consecutive semesters. She is an Illinois State Scholar. Jessica will
be attending Harper College in the fall, where she will pursue a career in Biology/PreVeterinary Medicine.
T
Although trustees are elected or appointed to
these boards by the management or labor organizations, they must not act in their personal interest, must not profit from their actions, and they
can not act solely in the interest of the organization that has appointed or elected them. If trustees
are found to have acted improperly, they can be
held personally and financially responsible. Even
though the funds and organizations have fiduciary insurance, plan participants must always benefit from the trustees’ decisions.

Plumbing Council of Chicagoland
“Ask Your Plumber”
The Plumbing Council of Chicagoland has been promoting the Plumbing Industry with regular broadcasts of the successful “Ask Your Plumber” program for over 15 years. The concept behind the
Saturday morning broadcasts on WGN and WBBN radio stations is to advertise the expertise of
licensed, Union plumbers by educating the general public on topics related to health, safety, and consumer rights. Members submit topic suggestions to the Plumbing Council office and volunteer their
time for tapings. As a result, “Ask Your Plumber” continues to be an informative and popular line up
among radio audiences.

returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan
are mustered out from service when their
tour of duty is over. They are stationed
there six weeks before leaving, thus giving the UA time to explain their program
and answer any questions they may have
regarding the trade. According to
President Hite, it has been more successful than they anticipated. He also stressed
the significance of all local unions adopting
a Letter of Excellence. This is necessary in
order to educate the public of the value of hiring a
skilled, qualified UA member. He indicated there are new pipelines, nuclear
plants, chemical plants, and refineries that are going to be built in the near
future. If construction were to start tomorrow, the UA would need at least
one hundred thousand new qualified members to meet this high demand.
This could be a start to reclaiming our share in tomorrow’s market. We also
heard Kirk Alter talk about Preparing Now for the Economic Recovery. This
is something we should be thinking about now. While most economists generally agree we will experience a recovery within the next 12 to 18 months,
they predict that recovery is more likely to be U shaped rather and V shaped,
so our challenges are not over yet.
Wayne Robinson, of Kohler, arranged a great tour of their plant, which is
always fascinating. Kohler is becoming more and more technical in its plant
operations and is coming out with many new products. We also toured the
Bemis toilet seat manufacturing plant and were able to view all their new
products. This was a very pleasurable and educational trip to Kohler, Wis.
Albert E. Gehrke, President

P.S. On June 1, there was a $2.90 wage increase for Local 130 plumbers,
with $0.77 going to the Welfare Fund, $1.13 going to the Pension Fund,
and the remaining $1.00 going on their paycheck.
Rebate Opportunities for
Consumers and
Contractors
Customer cash rebates on high efficiency water heaters are now available for
customers of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas from May 1, 2009 to
October 31, 2009, through the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program.
Contractors should contact homeowners where they have performed past
installations, as any rebate application received within 60 calendar days of
the installation date will be acceptable for processing. The rebates are from
the utility and are part of an overall energy efficiency effort legislated by the
Illinois government. These programs are in effect, and we want to spread the
word and increase participation. Please download the rebate form at this
website: www.mwalliance.org/peec. See the rebate amounts below, which
are also reflected on the rebate form itself.

strong throughout the country. At the upcoming
UA Instructor Training Program, in Ann Arbor,
Mich., there will be a number of green courses
available for instructors. Local 130’s instructors
will be in those classes, so that we can bring back
the latest information and be prepared to pass it
along to our membership at our night classes
beginning in the fall. We encourage every plumber
in Local 130 to sign up for this training and learn
all they can about the new green technology as it
relates to plumbing. This information will eventually find its way into the plumbing license test and
be the focal point of new certifications in the
future. In time, it’s information you may need to
know in order to work on LEED-certified construction projects. The future is going to be colored green.

enthusiastic, bubbly gentleman, he was a perfect
spokesman for the UA as he expressed his gratitude to his sponsor upon winning the race. His suit
displayed the UA logo. I know I was very proud to
see it and to have this young man representing our
union to the American public. He accepted his trophy from Mike Arndt, the UA Training
Director. During my duty as a starter, I was

annual Apprentice Contest. The 11 apprentices
chosen to compete put on a great show! The allday contest on June 2nd at the Apprentice
Training Center challenged every competitor to
put his best foot forward – both in the written
exams that tested their knowledge in math, codes
and blueprint reading and in the practical exercises that showcased how good they are with their
hands. Congratulations to Anthony Albergo of
Great Lakes Plumbing & Heating, who as the
first-place finisher will move on to represent
Local 130 at the statewide UA competition in
2010. The 11 competitors were selected from
more than 100 third-year apprentices in the union.
In my book, each one is a winner and I’m proud
of all of them. (Find out more about these outstanding apprentice plumbers and see photos on

JAC APPRENTICESHIP NEWS
2009 Apprentice Contest
Sees Another Close Finish
Congratulations to Anthony Albergo (Great Lakes Plumbing &
Heating), Jack Zagata (C.J. Erickson Plumbing), and Kevin Moeller
(Viking Plumbing), the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, in
the 2009 Apprentice Contest. The match, held June 2nd at the Apprentice
Training Center, set up 11 of the top 3rd-year apprentices in an all-day competition. The apprentices’ knowledge of mathematics, plumbing codes,
drawings and safety was thoroughly tested all morning in the classroom.
They spent the afternoon on practical projects that joined PVC, copper and
welded pipe. There were time limits on each exercise. The written exams
and hands-on projects were checked and graded by Apprentice Instructors
who moderated the contest. All of the above contestants, as well as the
remaining 8 apprentices who are considered 4th place finishers, will be honored at a Local 130 meeting in the fall. (See photos and the list of contestants on these pages.) “It’s an honor to be invited to compete in the contest,”
said Rich O’Connor, Local 130’s Apprentice Coordinator. “If they are lucky
enough to place in the top three spots, it is to some extent luck, because our
grade spreads are very narrow.”
enhance your knowledge of the Chicago Plumbing Code, drawing and blueprint reading, and welding. Safety programs cover areas like CPR/First,
OSHA Construction Safety & Health, and HAZCOM. There are also fourhour continuing education courses to prepare members for the Journeyman
Plumbers License test. These will begin on Sept. 3rd, Oct. 1st and Nov. 5th.
To learn more, visit www.plumberslu130ua.org or call the J.A.C. office at
312-421-1028.
J.A.C. Suspends New
Apprentice Applications
Finally, because of the prolonged economic recession and rate of unemployment of current apprentices, the J.A.C. has announced that it will not
accept new applications this year.
4 More Instructors to
Complete UA Certification
Scott Albergo, Dave Sampson, Brian Wilk and John Yock are four
Plumber’s Local 130, UA Apprentice Instructors who will graduate at the
end of the 2009 United Association’s Annual Instructor Training Program,
Aug. 8-14, in Ann Arbor, Mich. They will be joined there by other Local 130
instructors enrolled in various stages of the continuing program – or there to
teach courses offered to apprentice instructors from UA local unions in the
U.S. and Canada. It usually takes five years to complete all 200 credit hours
of the program necessary to become a certified UA Instructor. The weeklong
program concludes with a graduation ceremony for graduates and their families, held in the huge auditorium at nearby Eastern Michigan University, in
Ypsilanti. Congratulations to each of this year’s graduates!
Night School to Return
September 14
The Plumbers’ J.A.C. Night School is off for the summer, but will resume
on Sept. 14, 2009, and run to June 2010. The Night School courses, held 6
– 9 p.m. on weeknights, offer journeymen plumbers many opportunities for
advanced or refresher classes on a wide range of plumbing, construction and
safety topics. Beginning and advances sessions for many topics are offered,
including backflow, computer skills, and math. There are also courses to
2009 Plumber’s Local 130 Softball Team
