Overview
All of us grow with a dream. Some fulfill their dreams while
others cant due to lack of adequate resources. Realizing that
many people from the less privileged sector do not have access
to technological resources we developed our programs with an
ultimate aim of providing placement to the needy. With the
knowledge provided at our educational institutes, computers
centers and other livelihood courses they are closer to achieving
their dreams.
We have completed another quarter power packed with projects
and our focus has been fulfilling the dreams and bridging the
privilege gap. We look forward to associating, networking and
developing our relations with organizations who share similar
goals. We envision more growth by sharing our expertise to
more and more under privileged in the country.
A challenge in Communication
It takes a lot of grit and determination to organize a system for improved
communication with project affected people (PAPs) and make plans for the

Since
2010,
Vedanta
foundation has been imparting
computer education to the jail inmates
at Circle Jail Berhampur, South
Odisha. Through the foundation’s
Umeed program, around 300 jail
inmates have benefitted from this
program and are engaged in different
private institutions, earning their
livelihood.

Sakhi ke Saath…
..…Sakhi ki Baat
Vedanta Foundation has been offering
vocational courses at select centers for the
empowerment of women. At these centers,
courses such as tailoring, beautician, Rangoli,
Diya Painting, Jewellry designing and many
other livelihood trainings are imparted to
these girls.
Usha, 21, a graduate in
Computer Science, lives with
her mother, father, 5 sisters
and one brother. Being a
meritorious
student,
she
completed
her
entire
graduation on the basis of
scholarship received and
immediately got placed in a
reputed firm. Usha is the first
girl in the entire extended
family who was then working
but had to soon discontinue
as the job demanded her to
work late hours. Societal
interference,
lower
class
mentality and to top it all
being a girl, Usha’s family
strictly opposed her working
late and soon she had to
resign from the job. After a
few months break, she
managed to bag a job as a
teacher at UlhasVidyalay
where she teaches basic
computers and earns a salary
of Rs. 3000/month. Upon
knowing that Usha
is
interested to learn makeup
artistry, her friend, Neeta, an
alumni
of
Vedanta
Foundation
recommended
Usha to join Vedanta
Foundation’s
beautician
course. Seeing Neeta, operate
her own beauty parlor in the
neighborhood
she
was
encouraged to join the course
and soon decided to enroll
herself.
At the center, various other
vocational courses like Diya
paintings, Rangoli Designing,
etc are being taught to the
students. Usha today is an
entrepreneur and offers her
beauty services at home and
has
also
enrolled
for
advanced beautician courses
to keep herself updated. She
also made a profit by selling
her creations like diya
paintings during Diwali.
Usha is now recognized in
the neighborhood, and more
importantly has created an
identity for herself. She has
received a lot of appreciations
from her institute colleagues,
neighborhood friends and her
parents are now proud of her.
She is glad and thankful
to Vedanta Foundation
for supporting students
like her and teaching
them livelihood
courses.

Vedanta signs an MOU with Indian Institute Social
Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM)
associated as a facility partner.
PLACEMENT @ EAST:
2 Placement Drives were
organized in East Zone this
quarter. The first drive was
conducted
at
Pradhan
Nagar- Siliguri on the 24th
April 2014 whereas the
second drive was soon
organized on 2nd of May at
Park Street Kolkata. More
than 500 youth participated
in this drive.

the 7th of March 2014
between IISWBM and
Vedanta Foundation in
order to establish a
graduate college at Kolkata
for the underprivileged

(Ex-Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal
University of Technology)
and Prof. (Dr.) Gairik Das from

The process of affiliation of the
college with Kolkata University is
already in line and courses like BA
and. B.com would be launched at
the initial stages.

candidates who enrolled themselves for this drive, 29 candidates were short listed by the
companies.

A Challenge in Communication - Dr. Lona Nayak
Although lack of communication is a major pitfall while dealing
with tribal communities in project areas, I believe that sufficient
level of information and communication between project
management and local communities can easily bridge the gap....
My former services demanded my expertise in dealing with the
tribals and maoist and develop strategies for the development
of project-affected people (PAP’s). I recall, a milestone that I
achieved immediately after my continuous dialogues with the
PAP's was a positive participation of local communities in the
rehabilitation and resettlement committees. During the
committee meetings many problems of the tribals were
discussed for instance, choosing the desired habitation for
displaced families, health and hygiene and many others. There
were several occasions when the project has suspended
activities as protesters were demonstrating against future
mine activities.
I have always maintained that regardless of the tensions, the
management
should
continue
its
social
engagement
workshops...
I believe that sufficient
level of information and
communication
between
project management and
local
communities
can
easily bridge the gap....

353 Tribal Couples tie the knot……. “SamudayikVivah Solah”
Many couples in rural India are unable to afford the cost of a marriage ceremony,
which is why they do not get married officially. Likewise, the couples’ children are
also deprived of admission due to lack of parent’s identity. A Mass Marriage
Programs was organized that ensures to issue an authentic marriage certificate to
the couples, thus safeguarding them from being subject to social exclusion. Like it
was conducted previously in 2013, this time the Foundation conducted it at 3
different locations. The 1st one was organized at Jawahar, Thane on the 19th of May
where 151 couples tied the knot. The 2nd was conducted at Mokhada, Thane on 25th
May for 101 tribal couples and Chief Guest like Reema Lagoo and G. R. Khairnar
have attended the occasion to bless these couples at Thane. The 3rd one was
conducted on 16th June at Muniguda, Lanjigarh for 101 couples.. The marriage is
solemnized in a traditional fashion without any exchange of dowry or ostentation
and all the marriage necessities like mundavlya, mangalsutra, other pooja samagri
along with gifts like cycles, silver ornaments, basic utensil set, rajai’s, sarees, watch,
goggles, sewing machines, mobile phones and a fixed deposit of Rs. 5000/- at the
Post Office are distributed to each of the tribal couples. This initiative envisions
helping the tribal couples to join the mainstreams

the country, which would be impossible
without the support of our readers. You
could build the life of your sweeper’s
child, maid’s child or any less privileged
child by referring him to us for learning
computers.
