Lufkin and Angelina County is truly the Heart of the East Texas Nature
Experience! Our community is rich with natural areas to recreate and
enjoy the Pineywoods. We are surrounded by the beautiful Angelina
and Davy Crockett National Forests, the magnificent Lake Sam
Rayburn, the mystic Angelina and Neches Rivers, and a number of
amazing Wildlife Management Areas. All these special places offer
a wide assortment of recreational activities. So whether you like to
hunt, fish, hike, bike, canoe, ride horses, photograph wildlife, watch the
birds, camp, or swim, you can do it all right here in Angelina County. I
encourage all of our residents and visitors to get outside, be physically
active, and enjoy the incredible landscape we call home here in Lufkin
and Angelina County.

simultaneously. These can include prescribed burning, timber
harvesting, or hunting. So be sure to know before you go in
order to have the most memorable experience possible.
CAMPING
DISPERSED CAMPING

hunting season. Primitive camping is allowed anywhere in the

posted otherwise. Please check with the District Rangers Office

LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES
Leave No Trace principles are designed to reduce the impact of
visitors on our natural areas. By practicing these principles, you can
help protect our resources and preserve the quality of the outdoor
experience for other visitors. To learn more, visit www.lnt.org.
PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE
• Know the regulations and special considerations for the area
you’ll visit.
• Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.
• Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint,
rock cairns, or flagging.
• Repackage food to minimize waste.
• Schedule trips to avoid times of high use, and travel in small
groups to avoid impact.
TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES
• Travel and camp on existing trails and campsites.
Leave No Trace Principles allow you to enjoy natural areas
while also preserving them for those who come after you.
• Walk single file in the middle of the trail.
LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
• Preserve the past: observe, but do not touch, cultural or historic
structures and artifacts.
• Keep campsites small. Focus activity where vegetation is absent.
• Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.
• In pristine areas, disperse use to prevent creation of campsites
and trails.
• Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.
• Do not build structures, furniture or dig trenches.
DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY
• Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for
trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter.
RESPECT WILDLIFE
• Observe fowl from a distance. Do not approach or follow them.
• Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at
least 200 feet from water, camp and trails. Cover and disguise the
cathole when finished.
• Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters
natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other
dangers.
• Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products.
• Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash
securely.
• Carry wash water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use
small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater.
MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS
• Use a lightweight stove for cooking and a candle lantern for light.
• Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or
mound fires.
• Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be
broken by hand.
• Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely,
then scatter coal ashes.
LEAVE NO TRACE
• Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.
• Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: mating, nesting, raising
young, or winter.
BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS.
• Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
• Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.
• Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors.
• Let nature’s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises
