August - Oak Hill Country Club
August 2013 The 2013 PGA Championship Begins! August 5 - 11 PGA Tour Wives Association and Oak Hill Members Join Together for “PGA Habitat Build” with Flower City Habitat For Humanity As a way of giving back and leaving a legacy in a community where a major tournament is held, the PGA of America’s spouses have partnered with the PGA TOUR Wives Association (PTWA) in a philanthropic alliance. This year, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the PTWA, with the PGA tournament here at Oak Hill, the PTWA has chosen Flower City Habitat for Humanity as the recipient of their generosity, and have asked the members of Oak Hill to work with them on this project. I encourage everyone at Oak Hill to participate in this opportunity by signing up to volunteer to help build this home side by side with other volunteers, trained supervisors from Habitat, and the new homeowners. Together with the PTWA, we can support Habitat for Humanity in their efforts to revitalize a neighborhood making it safe for children and families to thrive. The home on Whitney Street is currently under construction and is slated to be completed midAugust, with dedication being held on August 7, the week of the PGA. Shifts are being scheduled for the week prior to the PGA; Tuesday, July 29 through Saturday, August 3, and the week of the PGA; Tuesday, August 6 through Saturday, August 10, excluding Wednesday, August 7. Workdays are from 8:30 to 4:00 p.m., no experience necessary, with onsite training. Be assured you will be working in a safe environment, and will have a job that you are comfortable with assigned to you. Volunteers must be age 16 or older. There is an “On line Volunteer System” through Flower City Habitat that makes it easy to sign up. Please go to rochesterhabitat. org, click on “Volunteer” link, then “Online Volunteer Sign Up and Calendar”. Register on the site and this will enable you to sign up, make changes if and when necessary, and receive e-mail confirmation and reminders. Instructions are also available at the front desk. Thank you for considering this opportunity - I know the members of the Oak Hill family will embrace this opportunity to help the PGA Habitat family become first time homeowners creating a promising future for their two young children, and for the neighborhood. If you have further question, please feel free to contact me, Mona Alongi, at [email protected] or 305-6337. Craig’s Corner by Craig Harmon, Golf Professional HOLE IN ONE UPDATE: We had 6 aces since the last issue of the Quercus. Three in one day! Gary Parker, Rich Pestorius and Greg Riley all aced #4 West on the same day. Mark Allen, #6 East, Ron Mack, #8 West and James Morphy, #8 West were the others. Great going guys! Season total is now up to ten. HOT ROUNDS: Low gross on the West: John Schantz, Jr., Carter Lucas, 69; JR McCarthy and Mike LaBue, 70. West low net: John Kraus, 63, Tony Malone, 64, Chris Fox, Pat Fulford, Tony Malone, Pete Philips, John Kraus, Dave Murray, 66. Low gross on the East: Matt Weins, 70. East didn’t surrender any low nets this past month. I wonder why? IT’S HERE!!! Finally, the PGA Champioship is here. What a great week this will be for all of us. My winning score prediction is 6 under, 274 with 6 players breaking par. It will be fun to see how our golf course stands up to the very best players in the world. Important Quercus Notice The September issue of the Quercus will be a special, 12 page issue devoted to the PGA Championship and all the events surrounding the tournament. We will include a calendar of upcoming October events with the September issue and will make every effort to publish all of the reports, announcements and pictures that would have gone in the September issue in October. Feel free to turn things in when you have them available so they don’t fall between the cracks. Any questions? Feel free to contact Amy Karch, Quercus editor at amykarch@rochester. rr.com. Manager’s Minute by Dan Farrell As you may know, due to publishing deadlines, we prepare the Quercus a month in advance. Today, as I am writing my article, we have just experienced one of the most severe rainfalls in recent history. The rain caused flooding on both the East and West courses, flooded the pool with mud and washed out the tennis courts just before the July 4th Holiday. The effort our entire Club Staff put forth to return the Club back to the world class standards you expect was outstanding. Jeff Corcoran and his staff removed downed trees, cleaned up the mess from flooding and restored several bunkers on both courses. I was amazed to see carts on the West course on Saturday, July 6. Jeff and his team worked through the night to clean up from the storm. Bill Brackmann and his staff were faced with a monumental clean up as debris from our new bus loop washed into the pool. For a moment we thought the pumps were totally damaged due to flooding and the pool water was too contaminated to remain open until our scheduled PGA closing date. Bill was able to restore the pumps and filter the water, bringing it back to crystal clear conditions and opening it sooner than we thought. The Clubhouse staff led by Dave Dennison, Tim Miller, Ted Vogt and Jim Hicks were instrumental in returning the facility to normal. Members came forward in record numbers, offering to help in any way they could. Once again, when situations like this occur, it confirms to me the biggest club asset is our employees and our members. I would like to publically thank everyone for the heroic efforts. During July, you experienced the bulk of PGA interruptions to member services. Most notably, access to the driving range, East course and parking lot caused the largest disruption. Our Board of Governors and staff worked hard to minimize disruption during the final stretch of build out. I hope you take advantage of the many reciprocal arrangements our neighboring clubs have offered us during the Championship. See you during the Championship, Dan Sunny Skies Win the Day at the Hickok Tournament! The first place six-some goes to, l-r: Jeff and Patty Davis, Dave and Karen McMahon, Sue and Jeff Hicks 2013 Senior Club Championship Senior Club Championship, 2013, Super Senior Division, (l-r): Gary Baker (Runner up), Craig Harmon, Jack Mahan (SS Champion) The Hickok Tournament, played on the West Course on the first Saturday in June, was happily completed without a drop of rain, and mostly sunny skies. The event started with a 1:00 shotgun and abundant amounts of drinks and food to accompany the fun on the golf course. The entertainment, following a wonderful dinner, got everyone up and dancing, and was a great finish to a terrific day. A great turnout with 96 players had Dave and Karen McMahon the overall winners with a net 60. Followed by a two way tie for second were Dave and Sue Murray, and Dan and Linda Perkins. Congratulations! The first place six-some goes to Dave and Karen McMahon, Jeff and Sue Hicks and Jeff and Patty Davis. As Liz Roher noted in 2008, the tournament, officially named The Oak Hill Scotch Twosome Tournament, is named after S. Rae Hickok who was Club President during the first three years the Club was in Pittsford (1927-1929) and has been a six-somes since it began in 1951. Thank you all for playing. Tom and Leslie Maracle, Chairpersons The Heritage Classic Senior Club Champion, (l-r): John Schantz (Champion), Craig Harmon, Brian Harris (Runner up) Photos by Kevin Morton 3 Hickory Golf at Oak Hill - The Heritage Classic will not be held this year because of scheduling changes, but will return next year. With the Member-Member Tournament being moved to the same weekend in September, we felt it would be for the greatest good to not also tie up the West course the same Saturday with an afternoon outing. The Heritage Classic will be back next year. We hope to see you then!! If you said yes, congratulations! If you said no, what are you waiting for? The benefits of regular exercise are commonly known, but did you know that tracking your exercise can be even more helpful? Before starting your exercise, I recommend that you set an attainable goal such as exercising more often, walking/running more miles per week, or losing a few pounds. Your training log or journal should include the following: date, time, how you feel, exercises performed, # of sets, # of reps, weight used, duration of workout, etc. Example: Date 8/2/13 Time 8:30 a.m. Mood: Positive, sore left shoulder. Warm-up: -5 minutes @ 3.5 mph on treadmill -Dynamic Stretch Resistance -Machine Chest Press 3 sets of 12 reps @7, 8, + 9 weight -Pull-ups 3 sets of 10 reps @ 10 weight -Dumbbell Incline Chest Press 3 sets of 10 reps @ 20 lbs. Cardio -Interval Sprints on Recum- bent Bike 15 seconds fast, 45 seconds slow for 8 “rounds” Keeping track of your workouts will help you progress towards your initial goal. Each workout you should try to increase one variable in your plan. Either adding 1 more set, a few more reps, or moving up to the next weight are just a few examples of how to improve each workout. If you have any questions about tracking workouts or would like to set up a personal training session contact the fitness center at ext. 388. Continued on page 7 Continued from page 6 Remember: “If you keep track of it, it WILL improve”. (Very true for fitness.) Eva Kane understands that making you feel comfortable and helping you over your reluctance is what it’s all about…at first. Then her amazing individualized attention will help assure you are safe and getting results. With her relaxing charm and caring demeanor, you’ll feel right at home with this group. Inside, outside, private or group, we’ve got what you need to enjoy your fitness and discover a different side to “socializing” at Oak Hill. Pool by Bill Brackmann Special notes of appreciation: 1. To all who visited our pool this summer, my sincerest thanks. What could have been a challenging pool season was again uplifted by our members’ spirits. Your support and caring input will always be a very important part of why our pool is so special. 2. To Tara Minor (Pool Committee Chairperson), Terry Skinner, Ellen Guisto and Kevin Morton (House Committee Chairman): these individuals were a very hard working, positive and caring team, dedicating themselves to truly representing all the different pool users and inspiring the pool staff to continue to improve what is already an excellent pool environment. 3. To Kelly Sherman and her Poolside Grill Staff: in my 16 years at Oak Hill I heard more compliments and encouragement about how wonderful both the service and food were this year than ever. Kelly motivated and coached her staff to a new standard of excellence. Thank you Kelly and Team! 4. And to Ryan Nickason, Pool Director and his pool staff: the best pool team in my years at Oak Hill. Hospitable, ever vigilant for safety and cleanliness and providers of great programs and fun for the kids. The way this team pulled together and overcame the dam7 ages from THE rainstorm on July 3 was amazing. Through all their efforts we were able to reopen the pool much earlier than we had anticipated. Thanks Ryan! You and your team were appreciated more than you can imagine. On that note, we all look forward to another great year of pool fun and relaxation in 2014.
