President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
I
t’s the middle of summer and our driving and
social events calendar is in full swing. I am
writing this after our second driving school at
Palmer Motorsports Park in Western Massachusetts and wanted to give you all a report on the facility.
The track is 2.3 miles long with 14 turns and almost 200 feet of elevation changes. The facilities at the track are currently spartan but the
track itself is immense fun. The turns are technical, requiring patience
and the need to maintain momentum especially with the climbing sections. It definitely has the feel of the Nurburgring with many of the
corners blind, requiring respect, and it’s an excellent place to develop
brake and throttle feel.
The track plans to build garages
and the permanent restroom facilities
are under construction. The paddock
is semi paved like Lime Rock and
based on environmental rules has a
gravel surface for drainage which is
another work in progress. We had
both dry and wet days at the track
and each offered different educational challenges to drivers with the rain
equalizing the higher horsepower
cars and re-enforcing the lesson of
being smooth.
Our next event at Palmer is not far
Boston chapter members getting a first
away in September but we also have
hand look at Palmer Motorsports Park.
For a more information about events and a Tremblant school and a Lime Rock
reviews of the track, see pages 7 and 12. School before then so there are plenty
of opportunities to get on track.
The auto cross events are also in
full swing at Devens Airfield with half the season still to go. These
events are a great way to develop car control skills with the added spice
of competition to make it fun with a friendly and welcoming group.
Social and technical events are also under way with Cars and Coffee, Rallies and tech events. One of our favorite events for the year is
our Concours d’Elegance being held in August at the Larz Anderson
Automobile Museum with Turner Motorsports being our title sponsor.
This event draws participants from all over New England with some
beautiful and often unusual cars. How about a 2002 with an S14 engine,
600+ HP M5 or an M1?
The Boston chapter puts on a lot of events and we couldn’t do so
without the energy of our volunteers, but we also need your support
and participation to continue to offer the range, quality and the quantity
of events. So if you haven’t attended a chapter event or have not been
to one in a while take a look at the calendar. See if there is something
that piques your interest and sign up, because we would love to see you
and then … tell a friend, pass it on. ♦

Boston Chapter BMW CCA : Upcoming Driving School events:
Loud at Lime Rock: For Experienced Drivers Only
Tuesday, August 18, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Lime Rock Park, Lakeville, CT
For the first time in several years, the Boston Chapter is proud to be returning to Lime Rock Park
for a High Performance Driving School! Lime Rock Park is a 1.5 mile road course that earned the
nickname “Road Racing Center of the East” over the course of its 55+ years of operation.
This will be a half day event, operating from 1 to 6 p.m., with no sound restriction. Registration
is limited to 40 students! This half day delivers even more time than sharing the track with the
Lime Rock Club, with no waiting around for half the day! With no lunch break, we’ll fit the regular
Boston Chapter schedule into this time slot, so you can leisurely drive to the track on the morning
of the event and still get your four on track sessions totalling 85 minutes.
To attend this event, you must have at least 8 days experience at High Performance Driving
Schools (with a record of positive evaluations from your past instructors).
If you are a current participant in the Boston Chapter’s ISG program, you will have the opportunity
to arrange for an additional 45 minutes of track time at an additional cost. Students in other
chapter’s advanced programs, such as A-Solo/S-Group, may apply to drive in ISG by emailing the
registrar with their driving resume.
This is a half day event providing a full day driving school worth of track time. You must provide
information on your experience at the time of registration.
Pricing and registration details can be found at a link at http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/

Fall Spectacular Driving School at Palmer Motorsports Park
Friday, September 18 – Sunday, September 20
Palmer Motorsports Park, Ware, MA
The Boston Chapter is making our third visit to Palmer Motorsports Park’s Whiskey Hill Raceway
for another High Performance Driving School plus our Instructor Training School.
This weekend event is open to students of all levels. Friday is available to two student groups,
the first being participants in the Boston Chapter’s ISG program and a limited number of students
who have previous experience of at least 20 days driving at High Performance Driving Schools,
driving at or above the upper intermediate level. The second group will comprise a novice and low
intermediate level offered for Friday at a special rate. Please contact the registrar if you have any
questions about your eligibility for Friday.
Additionally, the Boston Chapter will be hosting an Instructor Training School for qualified
candidates. This 3 day program provides a transparent approach for the instructional skills of
advanced drivers to be mentored and evaluated by a team of experienced instructors. Please
contact the Chief Instructors if you are interested in applying for ITS.
What is a Driving School? The purpose of a driving school is quite simple: to improve your
driving skills. We will emphasize the relationship of driver and machine, making them function
in unison and giving you, as a student, the opportunity to learn your limitations and expand your
capabilities, thus creating safe driving skills and habits in a controlled situation.
We conduct the school on a racetrack under the close supervision of experienced and trained
instructors. You will learn how to handle and control your vehicle at speeds not normally attained
on public roads. This will help to prepare you for emergencies in normal driving. It will also allow
you to explore your capabilities as a driver and those of your vehicle.
Pricing and registration details can be found at a link at http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/

Member Spotlight: Chapter members expand their karting activities
Story by Jack Meeker, photos by Susan Fenwick
Editor’s note: As Membership Chair Rachel Baker has
reported in earlier issues, Boston Chapter BMW CCA
events are the starting point for making friends and building lasting relationships. Some of those relationships take
members to new places to take advantage of other related
activities. When talking recently to Jack Meeker, cochair
of Karting for the Boston Chapter, I learned that chapter
members are branching out from their BMW CCA karting
activities and are having some success. Here’s a report
from cochair Jack Meeker:
I
t’s hard not to get excited about Karting after participating in the Chapter’s Karting program. This year a
number of Boston Chapter BMW CCA members have
expanded their karting activities and are participating
in the enduro karting series held each year at F1 Boston.
The series consists of 5, 90 minute qualifying races held
between April and August on the F1 Boston indoor,
joint-track layout in Braintree, MA.
The top 3 teams consisting of 2 or 3 drivers each
at the 5 qualifying races, all advance to a 3 hour final
championship karting enduro held at F1 Outdoors in
East Bridgewater, MA in the fall. Once a team qualifies
it can continue to compete in the series, and if it places
among the top 3 again, the qualifying spot in the final
is offered to the 4th, then 5th, and so on place teams
that night.
Chapter members well positioned
After the first 3 qualifiers held this season on April 27th,
May 18 th, and June 22 nd, teams captained by current
BMW CCA members Tommy Lydon (team Jagatomi
Racing), David Burton (team DB2 Architecture)
and Jack Meeker (team Bavarian) have all qualified for the final enduro, scheduled this year
to be held on September 5th. Other club members on those teams include Mark Gallagher,
John Przybylski and Terry Watson.
Still time to participate
The Monday night (weather permitting), 90
minute indoor qualifying karting events typically have 10-15 teams each. All teams are
given a 15 minute practice/qualifying session

used to set the enduro starting order. Every team is
then required to make 5 pit stops for driver changes
during the 90 minute race. For more information about
or to register for the remaining 2 qualifying races this
season (scheduled for July 27th and August 24th), visit

about car control in these open-wheel racing karts. You
can see exactly where the wheels are pointed, and then
compare their location with what direction the kart actually ends up going. Then the next time into a given
corner you can alter your line and see how the kart
responds with your new inputs.

The Next Apex: Experiencing Palmer!
Story by Christo Tinkov, photos by Christo Tinkov and Barry Tarr
I
have to be honest here: when our
club first announced nine track days
at Palmer for 2015, I was a little worried. It looked like the track had amazing
potential during that short “test-drive” in
pouring rain back in late Fall, but there were so many open
questions: Will it be ready for 2015? Will it have the needed
safety features added? Will it be fun to drive at speed? Will
people be able to figure out how to drive it or will they fall off
a 1,000-foot cliff? Will it have at least a trailer for a classroom?
Power? Water? Heck, will it have washrooms or would I have to
do my business behind one of those big rocks?
Now for something new
For the last 13 years that I’ve been with the chapter,
we’ve been going to Tremblant (our signature event
away from home!), Lime Rock (sorry, the logistics and
financials are not in favor), NHMS (well, at least it’s
close to home), and Watkins Glen (grins all around).
12 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2015
We had our first (and
last) event at Monticello
a few years ago, and even
though it looked promising,
its high-paying members
made a decision to keep
it exclusive (I hear Ferrari
owners experience “shrinkage” when a lowly BMW
passes them). Then there
was our Thompson adventure last year. The track is
not bad but most of our driving event committee members were looking for more bang for our buck.
As you can see, based on our past history, jumping
both feet on the Palmer opportunity was a bold move. It
was designed to ensure a commitment to a potentially
great track with first choice for select weekends. Of
the 25-30 racetracks that I’ve driven
in North America, there are only a
few that really stand out with their
distinctly own character: The Glen,
Tremblant, V.I.R., and Laguna Seca
come to mind first. The common
thread between all of them: roller
coaster effect. Driving Palmer for
the first time gave me that same
feeling of excitement and distinct
character, except Palmer keeps you
busy for its full length of 2.3 miles.
An accelerating ride
Even the front straight is not quite a
straight and you are so busy fight-

ing the car at triple digit speed through
the kink, you don’t even have the time to
glance at the speedometer, let alone wiggle your fingers or loosen your shoulders.
Many of its 14 turns fall into Skip Barber’s
Type III category: a compromise turn. You
can drive through these turns many different ways depending on weather conditions,
traction for the day, speed through previous turns leading to it, etc.
A challenge that calls me back
Palmer is a track where you are constantly
mixing the driver inputs (accelerating, turning, braking) and playing with the right
mixture that will keep you at the edge of
the friction circle. Trail braking at triple digits? Check. Drifting around a concrete wall?
Check. Four-wheel drift? Many checks.
Blind turns, camber, off-camber, steep uphills, winding down hills, a carrousel turn,
wild sequence of turns leading up to the
front straight – yes! Sir, may I have another?
Going to a new track is a bit like going to
a new restaurant. You go for the newness.
You come back for the food. Palmer is a
track for drivers designed and run by drivers. I will be going back there many times
for the unique driving experience. This is
a mini Nurburgring on steroids only an
hour and a half from Boston. Palmer is a
hidden gem, and I’m worried that all the
other clubs will also find out how truly
spectacular it is much too soon. So drive
it, love it and then don’t tell anyone about
it (if you can). ♦

O
n a Thursday evening in early July, Boston
Chapter members gathered for a Chapter social event. We met at the A&W in Smithfield,
RI on a Thursday night for our monthly get together.
The atmosphere was relaxed as cars came and went
throughout the evening. Car-side service was offered
by A&W, and many people took advantage of the service to try some of A&W’s excellent food and their
famous Root Beer Float! This was our first meeting at
this location, but keep an eye out on the calendar for
future events to take place there!
Special thanks to A&W for hosting, and to CCA
member John Whetstone for the event idea and planning efforts! Event Coordinators were Andrew Plante

Clapboard Tree Fun Rally Update: Launched from South Shore BMW
I
Story and photos by Marcy Venezia
t was a great day and a fabulous start location at
the brand new South Shore BMW (formally BMW
Gallery of Norwell) now located in Rockland just
off Route 3, Exit 14 on Route 228. At the Dealership
there were mouth-watering new cars, coffee, pastries
and most importantly good friends and conversation
greeted us. We arrived to have valet’s park our cars
while we enjoyed breakfast. General manager Avery
Trumbo gave us discounts on parts and by participating in the “Drive for Team USA” fund raiser we could
get $1,000 off a new BMW.
We had new comers Robin McFee and Patty Martinelli arrived in a beautiful light blue 325 convertible.
On this page, from top to bottom:
• Members met at South Shore BMW before the Rally began.
• The first place winners: Michael and Susan Mangini.
• Nicolas Costa and Dave Machado rallied with a full sky view.
On the next page:
• The rest of the crew who took part in the rally.
• Joyce and Debra Alpert came prepared to rally.
• Lisa and Jack O’Brien returned with their 328i silver convertible
prepared for a sunny day.
16 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2015
They are from Worcester and had some great ideas for
a Worcester Fun Rally. It was great to see the Mangini’s
(M3 Space Gray ‘11), the Curries (M3 Black ’02), Alperts
(X3 White) and the O’Brien’s (328i silver convertible,
’99) again.
If you have never been on a fun rally, it is a fun,
friendly and a great time for couples. Car enthusiasts
get to drive through back roads in a BMW (usually)
while the other looks for clues to questions along the
way. Don’t expect to get 100 right because some of the
questions are tricky!
We began releasing cars on the course at 10:30 and
arrived at Lunch around 1:30. Beginning in Rockland
we drove through the former Weymouth Naval airbase.
Wow, it is a big place undergoing an exciting transformation. The questions about the A4D-2 Skyhawk which
used to land on aircraft carriers where relatively easy to
answer. However many were stumped as to what three
towns the airbase is in. Do you know?
We had cryptic questions in Holbrook like “What
333 dates do you find here? “ Many got the answer ...
you had to be there to understand the question. Typical
questions were: What was the blue grey building? What
three towns is the place in? What type of plane? Where
can you escape? What street has a bull and a bow? Who
are the champions? And, my personal favorite, where
can you get an arm and a leg? Our favorite answer to a
group of questions by one team was WTF; “Well That’s
Fantastic!”
We drove through Weymouth, Rockland, Abington
and Randolph, Holbrook, Norwood arriving at Pete’s
Place in Canton Center for a delicious lunch and to tally
the number of correct answers. No one got 100 correct.
Winners are: third place, Tammy Kanai and Sam;
second place, Brandon Mulkern and Andrew Clifford:
and first place went to Susan and Michael Mangini.
Congratulations to everyone.
We are still fielding ideas for our fall fun rally. Some
interesting ideas were Worcester, Newport Rhode Island which is very picturesque, and fly to Nantucket,
rent scooters for the fun rally. All great ideas. ♦

Advanced Car Control Clinic
Update on April program at Lime Rock Park
Photo essay by Neil Halin, story by staff writer
F
or the first time in several years,
the Boston Chapter returned to
Lime Rock Park for an Advanced
Car Control Clinic (AC3) Driving
School. Lime Rock Park is a 1.5 mile
road course that earned the nickname
“Road Racing Center of the East”
over the course of its 55+ years of operation.
AC3 driving skills schools are designed to help you improve your
driving skills and to learn about vehicle dynamics and what they mean
to your car and you. The school’s dual
purpose is to prepare students for our
High Performance School and to teach
skills essential in everyday driving
situations.
The course used plastic pylons/
cones, to provide a safe learning environment for low to moderate speed
maneuvers. The skid pad area was
operated under a sprinkler system
to practice the exercises at low speed
and also to reduce tire wear.
18 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2015
The day began with a “chalk talk”,
where our expert instructors explain
vehicle dynamics, the techniques students will be taught, and summarize
the exercises for the day.
It was a thrill to return to this historic track for AC3, and we are even
more excited to offer a High Performance Driving School for experienced
drivers on August 18 th. Pricing and
registration details can be found at a

Tech Session Update:
Undercarriage Tech Session at BMW of Warwick
Story & photos by Andrew Plante
A
s the doors to the service bay slowly rolled up, the
smell of petrol and rubber filled my cabin. The
smile of a friendly Service Advisor greeted me,
and we both knew we were at the start of another excellent Undercarriage Tech Session.
A fellow CCA member pulled in behind me, a familiar face. I checked the schedule and saw that his time
slot wasn’t until much later in the day. However, like
many other members, he had chosen to spend his entire
morning at BMW of Warwick.
The coffee flowed, and more cars began to fill the
service bay. The Service Advisors gathered information and pulled the cars into the queue. Each inspection
typically lasts 20-30 minutes, giving plenty of time for
the vehicle’s owner to get a clear picture of the condition of the car.
The length of the inspection also gives time for the
other participants to have a look at the technology (new
or old) of the various cars in attendance. The special
treat that joined us today was a very pristine e30 M3.
This was in stark contrast to the Dinan e92 M3 that followed, in Frozen Valencia Orange (V8 Power!) The
up-to-date technology of an e63 6 series sits in a bay adjacent to the original 6’er, the e24. The cars may be from
different generations, but the owners come together enthusiastically to talk about their cars and share stories.
Thankfully this session went smoothly, no major issues were found. A few worn bushings, some seeping
oil, and one bad catalytic converter was the worst of
the news received. A catered lunch was served, and

this gave the Technicians a chance to take a break and
share some stories of their own (the Techs often have
the best stories!)
Our thanks go out to BMW of Warwick and their
excellent associates for hosting. Special thanks to Team
Leader Bob Barton and his top-notch team of Techs, Service Manager Mike Johnston, and General Manager Ron
Girouard. ♦
On Track: BMW is surging in the summer!
B
MW racing is really getting on stride in mid-season
2015. Team RLL keeps scoring points and taking a
true team attitude to the Tudor GTLM championship. Team WSR is getting their 2015 M135i Sport up
to speed in the BTCC with break through wins, Turner
Motorsports continues to improve in Tudor GTD and
BMW dominated the last DTM race at Zandvoort. After
some early season struggles for all of the teams, things
came together in July.
Team RLL consistent podium finisher
Team RLL continues to show fabulous commitment and
drive. The two cars are very complimentary and have
taken BMW to the lead in the manufacturer’s championship with consistent podium finishes. Team RLL has
had at least one car on the podium at every race since
Sebring and with only a little better luck, would still be
leading the driver’s championship. The GTLM Z4 still
lacks top end pace which continues to be a problem at
high speed circuits like Mosport where they managed
a 2 nd and 4th. After a 3rd and a DNF at the rain swept 6
hours at the Glen they continued to show strong performance. I would have loved to see RLL at Le Mans
this year, but I suspicion that the lack of top speed is a
killer for any Le Mans appearance.
West Surrey Racing steps up at Croft
In the BTCC this year West Surrey Racing has had a
hard time getting the 2015 version of the M135i Sport
up to the front. They have had decent performance, but
there have been several “racing” incidents and continued efforts on the part of the front wheel drive cars to
Pictured above: West Surrey racing wins all three races at Croft.

reduce the rear wheel drive advantage on the standing starts.
All of this has hurt the BMW results. However, at the last race
weekend before the summer
break at Croft, everything came
together. The 135 qualified well
and the WSR drivers swept all
three races with a different driver winning each one. They are
leading the independent team’s
points, but their best driver Sam
Tordoff is down in 7 th in the
driver’s championship.
The DTM has been a similar
situation for BMW, some success
earlier in the year, but generally a struggle against Audi and
Mercedes. However, did that ever change at the beach
resort of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. BMW was in
a different class than their competitors that weekend
and just dominated the competition. The M4 contingent qualified in P1 through 7 on the grid and finished
that way in the first sprint race. It was an amazing result. In the Sunday feature race BMW again finished in
P1 through 5 with Portuguese driver Antonio Felix da
Costa getting his first win in the Red Bull M4.
To wrap things up back on this side of the Atlantic,
Turner continues to fight the battle in GTD with their
new Z4. A 9 th at the Glen 6 hour under very difficult
conditions was a good finish. Let’s hope that Turner’s
new business arrangement (see the article on page 24 of
this issue) don’t hurt the focus on the race team.
Till next time – stay on track! ♦

Philes’ Forum: A little background on brake-pad-wear sensors
H
– Story and photos by Vic Lucariello
These early sensors, as well as
those used on the more modern (to
me) E39 5-Series and E 46 3-Series,
all work basically the same way, at
least insofar as my understanding
is concerned.
ello, Bimmerphiles! Let us
hearken back to the Fall of
2012. At the close of Philes’,
I included the following teaser:
“Take a look at the photo (See
Photo #1.). Do you know what it
is? If you have read Philes’ Forum
this far, you probably do. It is a
close-up, top-edge view of a new
disc- brake pad for a 2006 BMW
530i (E60). That thingie coming off
the center of the brake pad is the
brake-pad-wear sensor. Doesn’t
that sensor look a little different
from ones you may be used to seeing? It probably does.”
Location and mechanics
After a slight delay
In my next column I had intended
to write about how BMW is using
a rather sophisticated pad-wear
sensor that actually estimates the
remaining miles until brake-pad
replacement is needed. Unfortunately, I was unable to get good
photos of an older-style sensor for
comparison, so I had to postpone
this topic. I am sure you were all
waiting with breath abated ...
Well, after being inundated
with threatening emails, anonymous poison-pen letters (some of
which had return-address labels),
and even a couple instances of
blacked-out SUVs trolling up and
down my street, I got the message
and I am finally ready to address
the subject.
A BMW history lesson
But first, a bit of history. Although
I am not certain when brake-padwear monitoring was introduced
on U.S.-spec Bimmers, I do see
listings for the pad-wear sensors
going back to the E23 7-Series and
E24 6-Series of the 1978 model year.
So pad-wear monitoring has been
on the BMW menu for many years.
22 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2015
On this page from top to bottom:
1. New style pad-wear sensor
2. Old style pad-wear sensor
3. Worn out old style pad-wear sensor
4. Close-up of old style pad-wear sensor
There are two sensors, one each
on the left-front and right rear
inner brake pads. The sensors
have imbedded in their “plastic”
enclosures a loop of wire, which
the “plastic” insulates from contact with anything when the pads
are new. The sensors are wired to
the car such that the monitoring
circuit needs to see a complete,
ungrounded circuit through each
sensor. As the brake-friction material on the pad wears (due to
rubbing on the brake rotor whenever you step on the brake) from
its original 11-12 mm thickness
to about 3 mm, the rotor begins
wearing through the “plastic” on
the pad-wear sensor.
When the metal rotor contacts
the sensor’s imbedded wire, the
monitoring circuit detects this
and puts on the pad-wear indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
Sometimes, especially on older
models, you will see the pad-wear
indicator illuminate only when
you apply the brakes. On newer
models, I have seen the indicator
stay on once it illuminates.
Further pad wear will eventually wear completely through the
wire loop in the sensor, and from
that point the pad-wear indicator
will stay on all the time, regardless of the car’s vintage. Photo #2
is a close-up view of a new E46
brake pad with a new wear sensor
installed. The wire loop is just underneath the “bump” in the wear
sensor.
Photo #3 depicts the same brake pad after the friction
material has worn away and the rotor has contacted the
wear sensor. Photo #4 is a close-up of the wear sensor
where you can see what remains of the wire loop after
the rotor has cut it. Now if you go back and compare
Photos #1 and #2, you can see the difference in padwear sensors that I teased you about way back in 2012.
Note that the newer-style sensor in Photo #1, found
on Bimmers with CBS (Condition Based Service) protrudes much farther than does the older-style sensor
in Photo #2.
The newer style is more sophisticated
The newer-style wear sensor will contact the brake
rotor much sooner during the life of the brake pad; approximately when the pad is only half worn. What’s
up with that? The answer is that the newer-style wear
sensors are more sophisticated than the older, “loopof-wire” type. The circuitry in CBS cars actually senses
how much the wear sensor has been abraded by the
rotor and estimates the number of miles of remaining
brake-pad life. You can view the estimated pad life individually for the front and rear brakes either via the
i-Drive screen or the instrument cluster.
Despite all this sophistication, remember that of the
eight brake pads on your Bimmer (assuming it does not
have rear-drum brakes), only two are fitted with wear
sensors. So I don’t think that the brake-pad warning
system, either old-style or CBS-style, should be relied
on in lieu of regular, old-fashioned visual inspections
of your braking system.
Let me hear from you
I would very much like to receive a copy of your
NJMVC vehicle-inspection report. You can either email
a scan of your report (preferred), or simply email the
test data. (Include your name, too, if you want to be famous and be mentioned in Philes’ Forum!) There is no
need to send in reports of “passed” OBD II inspections
(This is where they scan your car for fault codes.), as
these reports contain no useful information. However,
for failed OBD II tests and for passed or failed OBD I
tailpipe tests, there is good info for my database. Please
include both the test results for each pollutant along
with your exact model and year, transmission type, and
mileage. If you know at what mileages your oxygen
sensors and spark plugs were last replaced, include that
as well. For OBDII failures, please include the trouble
codes. Please indicate what, if any, modifications have
been made to your motor (aftermarket “chip” or software, intake, exhaust, etc.). You can obtain copies of
passed OBD I tailpipe tests from the NJMVC website.
That’s all for now, bimmerphiles. See you next time.
Anyone wishing to contribute to Philes’ Forum can contact me at [email protected]. I’m interested in tech
tips, repair /maintenance questions, repair horror stories, emissions-inspection sagas, product evaluations,
etc. ♦

2002 BMW 530i WBADT63452C
K25409, Hard to find e39. Blue
Topaz with Tan interior and premium package (Self leveling Xeon
headlights, heated seats, ect). 150k
miles that are mostly highway. Recently put 5k into car thinking we
would keep it going forever, but
my wife had different plans that
included a larger car for the kids.
Car was bought “certified preowned” by my dad in 2005 . I have
all service records, including the
window sticker from when the car
was purchased by my dad. In the
past 6 months I have had the car
worked on by Import Autowerks
to handle some significant repairs. This includes radiator, water
pump, torque converter, throttle
body, belts/tensioners and more.
There are three issues you should
know about: Both front seats have
the BMW “twist” issue. The steering rack has small leak. And, while
not obvious when looking at the
car, there is a small dent on the
passenger rocker panel. This car is
a beauty, and I am going to miss
her. She runs great, doesn’t have so
much as a wobble on the highway,
Email me if you would like to see
more pictures of how sharp she is.

1999 323is Coupe WBABF733XXEH43350, silver, black.E36,
5-speed, 135k miles, black leather
interior, factory trunk-mounted
CD changer, premium sound system, sunroof that I haven’t opened
in years, A/C, dealer-installed
alarm/remote. Currently registered in MA and driven daily, last
inspection was March 2015 with
no issues. Purchased March 2002
from Concord Motorsports (Mike
Cooney) with 30k miles; dealermaintained while still in warranty
and by 3D Auto Works thereafter
with all records since 2002.Big
maintenance stuff - clutch and associated bits at 60k (pilot bearing
was failing); power steering hoses
and shocks all around at 90k; radiator, expansion tank, hoses at 92k;
front calipers (rebuilts) at 109k; alternator at 135k (June 2015). Both
rear wheel bearings were replaced
at different times, along with a
variety of suspension parts and
other things as needed over the
years - it’s a long list. Includes a
set of slightly rusted steel wheels I
got four or five years ago but never
used. The front seats are somewhat
worn but have no tears in the leather; the rears are quite good. Daily
driver since 2002, never tracked on
my watch. Carfax shows a rear-end
collision with the original owner
but I never noticed any obvious
evidence of damage or repair.
It’s a solid driver with good mechanicals, but is rusting in several
places (rear wheel arches, spots on
the trunk lid and hood lip, probably some others) and has a variety
of minor problems that you could
fix or not depending on how much
they bother you. Relatively low
mileage for its age, even with the
rust it’s still got some years left. I’d
originally planned to drive it until
it dropped, but after 13 years I just
want a change. Will be available
as soon as I get my new(er) daily
driver in mid-late July. Asking

1989 Ford Mustang Lemons Race
car. The Near-Orbital Space Monkeys (a team of Boston HPDE
instructors) are selling their wellsorted 5.0L Mustang #71. This car
is the 2013 Eastern Regional Lemons Championship winner, the
2014 Spring NJMP Lemons race
Class A overall winner, 2010-ish
Class B winner at Stafford, as well
as many top 5 finishes. Car placed
10th overall / 2nd place in Class B
at AER/Palmer this year. The car
breezes through Lemons Tech; 0
lap BS inspection without bribery.
This is not a cheaty car, but it does
have many well thought-out modifications to make it fast and fun
to race with minimal headaches.
Buy this car and you can race at
Thompson and NHMS this year in
a car that can win with good HPDE-level drivers, and certainly will
place close to the top of Class A unless you screw up. Details: http://
