Here at WtG we have created our Christmas baking list, fashioned
some warm festive drinks to toast the arrival of the holidays and
planned some great features from the kitchen to celebrate
the tastes of the season. Check out these pages,
browse the shelves and talk to your Servers to see
and hear about what we are offering this year.
At our sister restaurant, Cadence, Christmas is
also the topic of conversation. Because we
are offering a vegan menu there we have
all kinds of scope to develop and create
new winter & holiday traditions.

starting a new With the Grain tradition
One of my favourite things
about the holiday season
is learning of different
traditions, especially those
relating to food. This year
we will be introducing a
new holiday bread to our
Christmas line and hope
it will become a regular
holiday tradition. Stollen
is a traditional German
bread eaten during the
Christmas season. It is
also called Christstollen,
Weihnachtstollen as well as
Winterbrot meaning winter
bread. Like many breads
enjoyed during the holiday
season Stollen is an enriched
bread meaning it is made
tender with the addition of
eggs, milk, sugar and butter
to the dough. This particular
bread is also flavoured with
rum soaked fruit, fresh citrus
zest and spices. Our version
will also have a sweetened,
almond filling of house-
Mincefruit Squares
made marzipan. Stollen has
evolved through centuries
of tradition to become the
tasty fruit studded cake-like
confection we see today. It is
truly a bread with which to
celebrate the season. You can
find Stollen at the bakery
every weekend in December
and it will be available
for pickup along side our
sweet vanilla challah and
butter rolls December 22nd
through 24th.

On the sweet side you will find sugar cookies with colourful icing in festive array & luscious
gluten free cranberry squares. For savoury tastes we will be using the fall harvest of squashes,
apples and pears to form our features. In fact we are also planning a three course Christmas
dinner that will be available to take home or enjoy in the restaurant! Stay tuned for further
details :):)
This is one of our favourite seasons – it gives us the
opportunity to spread our wings in the bakery, in the
kitchens, in the barista area and in our retail department.

It has been three months
since we opened Cadence
our new vegan restaurant
downtown on Yarmouth St.
I hope many of you have
already had a chance to come
and try our menu there, but
if not let me tell you a little
bit more about it. Cadence
is inspired by my Mom who
with the support and buy-in of
my Dad transitioned from an
essentially vegetarian diet to a
vegan diet after she had heart
surgery 12 years ago. The
surgery fixed her immediate
problem but she was well
aware that it did not cure
the underlaying illness and
she began to look for a way
to do that. Her commitment
to this goal has been an
inspiration to me. This active
(and extremely successful)
engagement in her own
health and wellness has had
the added benefit of opening
up a whole new world of
amazing food and remarkably
satisfying cooking.
Cadence is designed to be
a place where vegans and
vegetarians can come in and
order anything they want off
the menu without the endless
rounds of questions which
sometimes preface eating
from more traditional menus,
but it is also for anyone
interested in eating delicious
food no matter what it’s
label. As at WtG,
we are sourcing
the best quality
ingredients, local
whenever possible
and we make everything
on the menu from scratch.
Adding to that fun is that
we are also experimenting
with making our own
“cheeses”, some gluten free
items, and delicious vegan
baking – witness our Blackout
Chocolate Cake :) Also,
keep an eye out for more
information on our 3 course
vegan Christmas dinner which
will be available to eat in or
take home the week before
Christmas.
