THE MIMOSA ROUTE - PRESENTATION
The English, often passionate about botanic were present on the Côte d’Azur as of the 19th century. Seduced
by their holidays on the Riviera, they brought mimosa with them to decorate the gardens of their sumptuous
villas. Mimosa was imported from Australia around the 1850’s.
As time went by, the mimosa which holds many symbols became one of the popular emblems on the Côte
d’Azur in winter.
Today, the Route du Mimosa spreads over 130 km from Bormes-les-Mimosa to Grasse. This touristic
itinerary, recommended from January to March is the most typical symbol of the Côte d’Azur in winter
because of its temperate climate. It is a travelling holiday between the blue colour azure and the yellow
colour of the sun. We suggest you stopover in each town the Route du Mimosa goes through to discover the
best this itinerary has to offer.
THE MIMOSA… A BIT OF HISTORY…
Around 1880, the mimosa, which originates from Australia, first appeared on the slopes of the Croix des
Gardes in Cannes. It had apparently been introduced by some of the most famous winter visitors, such as the
Duc de Vallambrosa, the Marquis de Mores or Lord Brougham. The Horticultural and Acclimation Society
(Société d’Horticulture et d’Acclimatation) largely contributed to its development. From then on, mimosa
growers multiplied in the region and particularly in Mandelieu, Pégomas, Tanneron or La Roquette. From
the Cannes and Mandelieu railway stations, the mimosa was loaded on trains going to the main cities in
France and in Europe.
4
MIMOSA...BOTANIC...
The mimosa belongs to the acacia family in the Mimosoideae subfamily. Its diverse species are used for
various purposes: cut flowers, ornamental or rock plants, hedges or wind-breakers, sand and soil retention,
perfumery.
It is essentially cultivated in Southern Australia, South Africa and France.
800 species have been listed and 1200 species probably exist.
-Type of soil: rather poor but drained soil even dry and rocky because this plant does not do well in stagnant
water.
-Soil quality : acidic soil
- Soil humidity level: normal
- Uses: cut flowers, in pots and in the wild
- Height: 10 meters (up to 30 meters in Australia)
- Plant type: flowering tree
- Vegetation type: hardy
- Leaf type: persistent
- Can withstand temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius in protected areas
- Best to plant in spring (soil or pot)
- Plant reproduction: seedling in a warm environment, grafting, taking of cuttings in the summer is difficult.
-Trimming: is advised every year particularly in windy regions. After blooming, cut the branches that have
blossomed to prevent the useless formation of pods. Trim branches to make them lighter by eliminating
excessive branches.
The clustered yellow flower-heads are directly attached to the stem.
The persistent leaves are sometimes bluish and decorative all year long. As it is light, it resembles other fern
plants.
5
Some varieties…
- The Gaulois (Acacia Dealbata)
Fast growing evergreen tree with bipinnate dark green leaves. Its abundant yellow flowers can easily be
distinguished from the leaves between January and March.
- The Tournaire (Acacia Dealbata)
Short dark green leaves. Blossoming is early from the end of December to January. Bright yellow flowers
that come in clusters.
- The Mirandole (Acacia Dealbata)
Fast growing tree with large green leaves. Blossoming from the end of December to February. This tree is
particularly good for big gardens.
- The Bon Accueil (Acacia Decurrens)
Medium size tree. Alternately arranged dark green leaves on both side. The leaf blade is bipinnate. The
small yellow or golden-yellow flowers are very cottony in appearance and are densely attached to the stems.
Fragrant flowers. Blossoming in January February. Ideal for big gardens.
- The Astier (Dealbata Gaulois Astier)
This tree is resistant and tolerates temperatures as low as -8 / -10 degrees Celsius if it has been cultivated
properly to develop normally.
- The 4 Season Acacia (Acacia Retinodes)
This is one of the most resistant trees as it can withstand temperatures of -9 / -10 degrees Celsius.
Blossoming in spring and summer. The last grower for this type of mimosa is located in Tanneron (M.
Blanc).
6
Cutting the flowers and selling them…
It is thanks to the flowering forcing technique that the mimosa is sold during longer periods throughout the
year. The plant is grown in a closed room, heated at 25 degree Celsius and humidified at 85%.
It allows the blooming of the flower and its conservation is guaranteed by the use of a powder called
“Crystal”.
Two stories are at the origin of this technique.
- According to the first version, a little girl had prepared a bunch of mimosa that had not blossomed yet. Her
mother placed it in a vase in the laundry room. It is said that the next day the flowers had blossomed
magnificently.
- According to the second version, it is said that a gardener had raked cut branches and had placed them on a
manure pile. Thanks to the humidity higher at the night, the cut branches looked even better the next day.
Part of the production is packaged and sold for wholesalers and florists not only in France but also abroad.
The rest of the production is used for decoration during the various festivals and parades taking place all
over the Côte d’Azur from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Pégomas or even the Nice Carnival.
THE MIMOSA AND ITS SYMBOLS…
Thanks to its bright yellow colour, the mimosa flower carries many symbols. Its delicate fragrance reminds
us of the South of France.
Its glowing flowers obviously represent the sun. In love, the mimosa evokes secret love stories: nobody
knows I love you. It implies sensitivity and also infers: you are my only love.
It also symbolizes reunion.
Symbol for gold and the sun, the mimosa also represents a successful life because of its solid wood. It also
symbolises the triumph of good on evil.
7
THE MIMOSA IN THE PERFUM INDUSTRY…
The most popular French perfume brands have all used the mimosa in their most famous perfumes: Amarige
from Gyvenchy, Paris from Yves Saint Laurent, Champs Elysées from Guerlain, Moment Suprême from
Jean Patou.
The mimosa flowers are particularly prized to produce perfume because they are composed of many
different molecules but only a few of those contribute to its aroma.
It reminds us of the violet and it has a more subtle and lighter scent. It is said the mimosa has a floral,
powdery green fragrance.
The most used mimosa type is the mimosa cassier (acacia farnesiena), but nowadays wild mimosa is also
used.
Other perfumes include:
- Mimosa Pour Moi, from L'Artisan Parfumeur
- Casaque, from Jean d'Albret
- Kalispera, from Jean Desses
- Masumi, from François Coty
- Le Mimosa, from Molinard Jeune
- L’Eau d’Azur, form L’Occitane

ART AND MIMOSA
The mimosa has also been a great source of inspiration for the many painters who fell in love with the Côte
d’Azur. One of the most famous paintings is The Workshop with Mimosa.
A few works of art representing mimosa on the Côte d’Azur…
Mimosas en fleurs à Cagnes

in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
The Workshop with Mimosa by Pierre Bonnard
1939-1946
The Côte d’Azur by painters is a permanent exhibition that has come to life thanks to a hundred paintings
exposed on the open-air and displayed on lecterns scattered in the alleys and streets on the towns and
villages of the Côte d’Azur. Those lecterns have been placed exactly where the Great Painting Masters had
placed their easel when painting. You can admire paintings from Claude Monet, Raymond Peynet, PierreAuguste Renoir, Chaïm Soutine, Raoul Dufy, Pierre Bonnard, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau…
Maritime landscapes, towns and villages, streets and gardens … Those are only a few of the themes that
have inspired the painters and make this destination a feast for the eyes. They have immortalized places such
as Antibes Juan-Les-Pins, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Grasse, le Cannet, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Villefranche-sur-Mer,
Menton, Mougins, Cannes….For more information please visit : www.cotedazur-tourisme.com

Walks… “The nicest and most flowery village in France”
Bormes-les-Mimosas is considered to be one of the nicest and most floral village in France thanks to a wide
variety of trees such as: the Cyperus Papyrus, the Jubaea Chilensis (Chilean Wine Palm), the Jacaranda
Brasiliana, the Erythrina crista-galli tree also called the Cockspur Coral Tree.
The 12th century medieval village counts up to 700 rare vegetal species among which some are exotic and
tropical plants that have adapted to the Mediterranean environment well.
Because Bormes-les-Mimosas has been committed to its botanical heritage, it has obtained many labels and
awards related to the preservation and protection of its flora: The “4 fleurs” label was awarded in 1970 and
in again in 2006, it has also been awarded nationally and at a European level in 2003 and 2013.

Thanks to its microclimate Bormes-les-Mimosas features many gardens including the most recent Gonzalez
Park, a 2400 m2 botanical garden totally dedicated to an exceptional and unique collection of Australian
plants in Europe: Banksia, Grevillea, and Melaleuca plants.
Bormes-les-Mimosas, the capital of the mimosa in the Var region
From January December to March, the medieval town adorns itself with a “yellow scarf”, a genuine bursting
of yellow colours and aromas. 90 mimosa species have been identified.
The city of Bormes is the first to celebrate this yearly botanical event: Mimosalia (last weekend of January).
It is a must go event for the most famous French gardeners. Since 1920, the Corso and its flowery floats also
takes place at that time.
The mimosa a men story
In Bormes, the mimosa is exclusively grown in pots and Julien Cavatore has been a passionate grower. He is
the only one in France to own a collection accredited by the National Council for Conservation of Plants and
Gardens (Conservatoire Français des Collections Végétales Spécialisées). His collection gathers 180 species
exported all over Europe. The most sold variety is the Mimosa Claire de Lune a graceful and fragrant type
which blossoms in March / April.
The most original type of mimosa is the Mimosa Karroo from Africa, a thorny type of acacia with abundant
yellow and orange flowers blossoming in July and August!!!
Julien Cavatore has cultivated his plants with natural and organic manure for several years now. All the
plants are sold and shipped in organic packaging. For more information please visit: www.mimosacavatore.com
The Pignard family has commercialised products made from mimosa essential oil such as home fragrance,
essential oils, soaps and other cosmetic products. There are 2 stores in the heart of the old village: 11 rue

The Domaine du Rayol, the garden of the Mediterranean climates
Located in a protected area of the shoreline, the Domaine du Rayol spreads over 20 hectares including 7
hectares of gardens. The Domaine boasts sceneries similar to the ones you can see in countries that have a
similar Mediterranean climate such as: Chile, Australia, South Africa, the Canary Islands and California. In
addition, this unique site also features other sceneries such as the deserts in South America or the Chinese
bamboo plantations. Gilles Clément, a gardener, poet and a writer created those gardens. They will make

Saint-Raphaël is a listed seaside resort situated at the foot of the Massif des Maures and it boasts an
exceptional shoreline in a protected natural habitat.
The 36 km long shoreline will lead you to the heart of this town by the water, featuring several ports,
secretive coves from Boulouris to l’Île d’Or and through Agay. The coastal road called Corniche d’Or, was
carved into the rock and the Calanques d’Anthéor le Trayas overlooks the pristine and clear water of the
Mediterranean.
Saint-Raphaël, the Estérel side and the Corniche d’Or…
In the Massif de l’Estérel and during the winter, the volcanic red rocks of the Estérel adorn themselves with
the bright yellow blossoming mimosa. Flowering mimosa can be spotted in specific areas. As a matter of
fact, the men in charge remain the National Forest Office agents who manage the Mediterranean plants that
coexist with this acacia imported at the end of the 18th century.

THE ESTEREL (VAR ET ALPES-MARITIMES)
18
In Saint-Raphaël and Mandelieu-La-Napoule, the panorama offered by the Estérel is one of the most
striking. The Estérel was formed during the Paleozoic era and it is constituted of volcanic rocks spreading
over 32000 hectares, it culminates at 614 meters and drops into the blue waters of the Mediterranean.
This part of the Estérel is composed of 400 km of marked trails, national forests and private land.
The history of the Estérel is very ancient and goes back to 300 million years. It was initially attached to the
African continent, until the Mediterranean sea separated them. During the Tertiary era a piece of the Estérel
detached itself from the rest, Corsica was born….
The rugged land and the steep coves that drop into the water bear silent witness to one of the most dramatic
geological mass movements.

MANDELIEU LA NAPOULE (ALPES-MARITIMES)
Press contact : Béatrice PIEDNOEL – Tel : 04 93 93 64 78
[email protected] – www.ot-mandelieu.fr
After following the Corniche d’Or, this marvellous itinerary finishes in Mandelieu-La-Napoule. This village
features gold courses, ports, castles, a protected natural habitat and a mountain dedicated to the mimosa: the
Massif du Tanneron.
The beginning of the Golden Route…
The growing of the mimosa is mostly done in the West of the Alpes-Maritimes department and particularly
on the Massif du Tanneron. At this point, the Mimosa Route follows an old itinerary called the “Route d’Or”
(the Golden Route). It follows a triangular itinerary between the 3 villages surrounding the mimosa forest:
Madelieu-La-Napoule, Tanneron and Pégomas. This circuit allows you to discover wild and cultivated
mimosa. A few visits at the growers’ nurseries will allow you to ship or buy directly from the nurseries
sunny bunches of flowers for your family and friends.
The capital of the mimosa…
Soon after its introduction into the region, the mimosa adapted so well that it did not take long before the
locals realized they could sell the mimosa cut flowers. Various markets quickly developed and entire train
wagons soon left the railway station of Mandelieu-La Napoule to ship mimosa in the North of France and
abroad. Since 1931, the inhabitants of Mandelieu-La Napoule honour the flower by celebrating the Festival
of the Mimosa. The next one will take place between the 18th – 25rd February.
Today, the tourism industry also supports this economic activity by organizing visits in the various nurseries
and by purchasing large quantities of the flower to decorate the unique floats used in the exceptional parades
and festivals taking place in the region.
To discover… Walks and hikes ….
From January to March, several hikes departing from Mandelieu-La-Napoule are suggested (maps and
itineraries are sold at the Tourist Office): The Massif de l’Estérel, the Grand Duc Forest in the Massif de
Tanneron, the San Peyre State Park, the Lerins islands.

The rivers Siagne and Mourachonne go through the plain in which Pégomas was built by Italian families in
the 16th century. They planted olive trees, grapevines, fruit trees and brought with them all their know-how
to grow aromatic plants such as the mimosa. Today, growing mimosa still makes the inhabitants of Pégomas
very proud, and this village is considered to be one of the main stops on the Mimosa Route that winds
through the Massif of the Tanneron.
Be sure to …
- Take a stroll in the garden of the mimosa where several mimosa varieties have been planted.
- Walk along the Siagne river where nature has taken over.

Although the medieval city of Grasse is famous worldwide for its perfume industry, it also benefits from
other indisputable assets such as the complementarity it offers between its Mediterranean shoreline and its
genuine, lush countryside scattered with villages and picturesque landmarks, a true paradise for nature
lovers.
Its typical architecture, combining Provence and Italy, features colourful buildings, fountains, squares,
luxurious mansions, and bears witness to its economic success. Its rich cultural heritage makes it a “Ville
d’Art & d’histoire”.
Between alleys and streets …..
Grasse is an architectural jewel including an amazing cathedral that is worth a visit as it gathers a collection
of fantastic paintings from Fragonard, Rubens or even Louis Bréa. It also boasts several museums dedicated
to Provencal art as well as the must-visit International Perfume Museum (MIP). Perfume is not only a very
symbolic product from the Côte d’Azur it also shows the historical know-how that has made Grasse wellknown around the world. This museum also brings to light the mimosa’s social, economic, cultural and
symbolic dimension from the Antiquity era to the present time on the 5 continents.
In this lively museum, you will learn about the history of perfume from various perspectives: raw material,
production, the industry, innovations, sales, design, marketing, uses. It will also present the different forms
perfume can take through specific objects such as: artistic objects, decorative arts, textiles, archaeological
objects, unique art pieces.
As far as the gardens are concerned, there are marvellous witnesses of the greatest moments the Côte d’Azur
and Grasse have been part of.
The only 3 perfume stores that are left in town are the only ones producing and selling their products:
Fragonard, Galimard & Molinard. They offer guided visits in their respective factories as well as workshops
in which you can learn about the art of perfume making, discover the secrets of some of their creations by
associating different essences, you can even create your own perfume! Last but not least you can also visit a
mimosa nursery and a nursery for plants used in perfume production.
