The central role of natural gas in the Turkish energy mix, with 45% of electricity demand covered by gas-fired power plants, and the privatisation and opening up of the Turkish energy market, is expected to boost investment into new gas to power generation projects. Electricity prices in Turkey remain high with challenges in maintaining gas supplies and developing gas transmission infrastructure. Diversifying supplies via LNG as an alternative to pipeline gas is becoming more attractive for Turkish power producers, and there is a need for extra power generation capacity to handle electricity demand surges in the winter months. Gas-fired power generation projects are developing, creating opportunities for project investors in Turkey, which remains unaffected by the low spark spreads in the rest of Europe. Our speakers will focus on Turkey’s role as a turntable for gas supply to Europe, assess the impact of the energy market liberalisation measures on investment and showcase the latest projects and turbine technologies.
