Killingworth is HEARTSafe
The Department of Public Health
started the HEARTSafe Communities
Program in the spring of 2006 to foster
community environments that improve
the survival odds for people suffering
sudden cardiac events, such as cardiac
arrests or heart attacks.
A HEARTSafe Community promotes and
supports the American Heart Association’s
‘Chain of Survival’: Cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) training in the
community; public access to defibrillation
through strategic placement of automated
external defibrillators (AEDs) for use by
trained community members; trained
and equipped first responders and early
advanced care.
The HEARTSafe Community program was
developed in Massachusetts and now many
states have started their own programs. It
is the hope that this program, developed,
piloted and implemented here in New
England, will spread across the country.
There is a clear need for this program.
Only 13% of Connecticut adults know all the
proper heart attack signs. These signs include
recurring chest discomfort or pain, pain in
one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach;
shortness of breath; and other symptoms
that may include breaking out in a cold sweat,
nausea, or light-headedness.
It has been proven that educating the
public to recognize cardiac events will save

KCC President
Welcome March! Although it seems as if we’ve been living in
a perpetual snow globe, warmer temperatures are right around
the corner. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to our new
Chamber members.

Long time resident and landscaper Mike Cassella has
opened Premiere Stone Products on the corner of Stevens

Andrea Rodnick of Globele Energy also joins our Chamber this month. Globele
Energy is a full service company specializing in Energy auditing, management, and

Board member Franco Piscitelli is busy planning our Annual Meeting to be held
in April. We hope to see you there - it’s a great way to network with other Chamber
members. Stay tuned for more information!
In closing, I would like to acknowledge our long-time editor, Fiona Phelan, for her
contribution to the Krier and the Chamber over the last 10 years. Her talents and
dedication were an asset to the publication and we are grateful for the time and care
she took each month to make the Krier an invaluable resource for our community. As
Fiona moves on from her role with the Krier, we thank her for outstanding service and
wish her the very best in future endeavors.

Did You Know?....
Egyptian and Chinese records show
that domesticated fowl were laying
eggs for man as early as 1400 B.C.
Backyard chicken keeping has been a
popular trend for years, thanks in part to
the growing interest in consuming local
food and the decision by many to move
toward a more organic way of living. If
you’ve pondered the idea yourself but
are intimidated by the process, John
Farrugia of Killingworth and his partner,
Marisa Fabrizi, have a simple solution.
Quite often what holds us back
from trying something new is the
commitment it might entail. John
and Marisa have had egg-laying hens
for years and truly enjoy the process.
After viewing a feature on a morning
news show about how a Maryland
couple were helping their friends and
neighbors get started by renting them
hens and coops, the couple thought
the unique idea would work here in
Connecticut as well. Right then,
CT Rent-A-Hen was hatched.
If you’re considering a backyard
coop, it’s important to know what
the rules are in your community
and any conditions that may apply.
Most towns in Connecticut allow
for the keeping of hens. In order to
rent a coop and hens from CT RentA-Hen, a small yard is required to
locate the coop, which is 8’x4’ and
is fully contained. Renters will not
need to put up a fence or alter their
property in any way. The $99 start
up fee includes delivery of coop and
hens to and from your premises, a
50 lb. bag of feed, water and food
containers, hay to establish nest
boxes and training/support from
John and Marisa. Then, it’s only $45
per month to rent a minimum of
three hens. Each additional hen you
might choose will cost $15 per month.
Customers can rent by the month or
for the entire season (April 1 through
October 31) and have an option to
buy the coop and hens at any time.
Regarding care: Renters must
provide food and water daily and
periodic cleaning of the coop is
necessary for the well being and safety
of the hens. There are several rewards,
foremost is collecting fresh eggs each
day and enjoying the rich taste of farm
fresh eggs that you can’t buy in the
grocery store. You will also be amazed
at the connection you will ultimately
make with these domesticated, friendly,
beautiful birds. As you take care of your
flock, you’ll discover that each hen has
a unique personality and position in the
“pecking” order.

Todd Hajek is Killingworth’s New Fire Commissioner
The Killingworth Republican Town Committee is proud to
announce the swearing in of Todd Hajek as Killingworth’s new
Fire Commissioner. He replaces former Fire Commissioner Mike
Butler, who recently resigned to join his family out of state.
Todd Hajek, a lifelong Killingworth resident, has been a 34-year
member of the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company and
has previously served as fire chief. Todd was nominated and
unanimously approved by the Killingworth Republican Town
Committee at its November meeting as a replacement for Butler,
and his appointment was approved by the Board of Selectmen
during its January session.
As Fire Commissioner, Hajek’s duties will include ensuring
the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Department receives the critical
resources it requires to maintain its high quality of protection
of the town against fire. He will also be a member of a three
member advisory board to the Fire Company.
A graduate of Vinal Tech, he and Lara Catalano Hajek, his wife
of 15 years, have two children.
We welcome Todd Hajek as Killingworth’s new Fire
Commissioner, and we wish him great success in helping keep
Killingworth safe.

Using Constant Contact KCC Thanks Susan Flynn
The Chamber of
Commerce in any
small town relies on all its members to
help build a strong
foundation on which
local businesses both
strive and thrive. Long standing
member and licensed
realtor Susan Flynn
established her small
independent company, Flynn Real Estate, in 1995. Susan has
been an ardent supporter of the Killingworth Chamber of
Commerce ever since. Ms. Flynn also owns and operates Credence Edge Farm
where she offers quality horse boarding care. Her farm
provides ample turnout and access to miles of trails. Two
stalls are currently available .
You can contact Susan at [email protected] The Killingworth Library and Constant Contact
present “Campaigns That Drive Action: Newsletters
& Announcements,” featuring email and social
engagement, on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m.
At the heart of small business marketing are the
campaigns that drive action - collections of marketing
activities that help a small business or organization
to achieve its goals and objectives. Newsletters and
announcements have become a core component of
those campaign choices. Email is more important than
ever - to the communication efforts of businesses and
nonprofits everywhere. This workshop will help you learn
how to make those email newsletters more effective.
As Managing Partner and Chief Buzz Officer of
Touching Clients, instructor April Woodcock works
with small- to mid-size companies to help them
develop a robust online presence by using strategic
marketing initiatives. Woodcock is an Authorized Local
Expert of Constant Contact who presents regularly on
email marketing and social media throughout the New
England area.
The event is free but advance sign up is required.
Please call the Killingworth Library at 860.663.2000 or
visit www.killingworthlibrary.org for additional details.

Where in the World is Killingworth, Connecticut?
If I had a nickel for every time
I was asked in various telephone
conversations to repeat the name of
my TOWN, please… and then…can
you SPELL that?...…. I’d be wintering
waterfront in a Caribbean villa right
about now. In my particular case as
a bonus they have to wrap their mind
around my street address as well Yes, furniture delivery department..
.that’s KILLINGWORTH, Connecticut on
ROAST… MEAT… HILL …ROAD.
While its name might be peculiar,
our cup runneth over with all that
Killingworth has to offer. Funny thing
- a recent review by a food critic for
The Hartford Courant gave the new
La Foresta Restaurant rave reviews,
much deserved! The critic took note
of its surprising success and choice
of location despite being OUT IN THE
MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. I beg to differ
on that one little thing. If you’re
a nature lover or history buff, the
scenic roads lined with 18 and 19th
century homes, rolling fields, stone
walls, and protected woodlands most
definitely appeal to you.
We have access to two state parks
and town owned properties that
provide miles and miles of hiking
trails and even a few swimming
holes. If you like your privacy but
don’t want to be too far away from
it all – we’re just a few miles from
an outlet center that some drive
hours to peruse. We’re a fifteen
minute drive from the shoreline
and beautiful Hammonasset State
Park with the largest public beach
frontage in the State of Connecticut.
Same goes for public transportation
to the cities whether you are
commuting for work or pleasure.
To name just a handful of
noteworthy people who have lived in
Killingworth - in the late 17th century
Rev. Abraham Pierson taught classes
in his Killingworth home (located
now in Clinton). It was the birthplace
of Yale University and the Reverend
served as its first President.
Abel Buell, Killingworth native, was
publisher of the first map of the new
United States created by an American.
Jonathan Bush, brother of President
George H.W. Bush and Uncle of
President George W. Bush lived here.
Former Houston Astros MLB player
Jeff Bagwell grew up in Killingworth,
finding his love for the game early
on in our little league fields. Hugh
Lofting, author of the Dr. Doolittle
series lived in town. Ricki Lake had a
home here in the late 1990s. Are you
a New England Patriots fan? (How
about that Superbowl!) Right now
in the cheerleader lineup we’ve got
a Killingworth native, Camille Kostek.
(see page 9). Yankee Magazine
featured resident Andrew Pighills and
his stone wall craftsmanship in its
February issue.
All of the above are reasons
to be proud of our town, but our
biggest asset is the strong core of
dedicated volunteers who make it
all come together. The EMTs and
Volunteer Fire Department are at
the top of that list. The Killingworth
Library’s circulation desk is staffed
by volunteers, as are most of our
boards and commissions. The Lions
Club, Helping Hands, The Killingworth
Foundation, the Killingworth Women’s
Organization and several worship
communities contribute to the needs
and well being of our community.
The resurrection and maintenance of
Parmelee Farm was made possible in
large part because of the generosity
of volunteers and community
business men and women. We are
indeed a small town with a population
of about 7,000, but our assets are
bountiful.
One thing we don’t have is a
town newspaper. In order to provide
a bridge connecting local business,
Community resources and residents,
The Chamber of Commerce has
provided the Killingworth Krier
and the Chamber Directory as
free publications since its first
6
Killingworth
installation in November of 1992. At
that time it was called the Killingworth
Cackle and consisted of four pages.
During my run as editor, I invite
anyone who would like to contribute to
the Krier to contact me with your ideas
at our new e-mail address:
[email protected].
We encourage guest writers on
subjects that might interest Killingworth
residents. New ideas for content are
welcome. Photo submissions are
appreciated and will be published when
space permits.
Every one of us bears responsibility
for why our little town - in the sticks - is
so much more than that. Let the Krier
be your voice.

lives by providing prompt emergency response and care,
starting with informed and trained bystanders and continuing
through first responders to advanced pre-hospital emergency
care. Killingworth is one of one hundred and twelfth towns
and cities in Connecticut that have achieved the three-year
HEARTSafe designation, along with 7 companies.
Designation as a HEARTSafe Community represents a true
community effort. Most importantly, it recognizes the citizens
throughout the community that took the time and effort to
become CPR and AED certified. Killingworth has demonstrated
its commitment toward ensuring that its residents and visitors
receive the early lifesaving response proven to increase the
chances of survival for heart attack victims.
The Connecticut Department of Public Health Heart
Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, Office of Emergency
Medical Services and the American Heart Association would
like to congratulate the community of Killingworth for
achieving designation as a HEARTSafe Community.

KLA and the KWO “WOW” Factor Killingworth Library Association board members
issued a public thank you to the Killingworth
Women’s Organization (KWO) for being the
library’s most active community partner last year.
In 2014, KWO raised more than $7,000 to support
the nonprofit library through a spring tag sale, a
successful auction for the library board’s year-end
event “Cheers to the Next 50 Years,” and proceeds
from the Christmas Lights Spectacular.
“The women of KWO provide the ultimate ‘wow’
factor,” said Killingworth Library Association President,
Alison Karam. “Whatever they plan to do, you can bet it’s
going to be great. We clearly need community partners
to help us meet the library’s budget goals, and KWO has
stepped up with phenomenal support over the years.
We can’t thank them enough. They truly embody their
mission to help others in our town and build a stronger
sense of community,” she emphasized.
More than 140 people attended the ‘Cheers’
event at the library in November and the KWO, in
partnership with the Gorski Family, culminated 10
years of spectacular holiday family entertainment
in December. The KWO has helped raise more than
$25,000 for the Library since 2010.
Killingworth Library Association is a private,
non-profit organization run by 18 volunteer board
members responsible for raising more than $90,000 of
the Library’s operating budget this year, with the Town
funding the rest.

March 31 at 7 p.m. - Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary”
April 30 at 7 p.m. - Edith Wharton’s “The House of Mirth”
May 28 at 7 p.m. - Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway”
Events are free but advanced sign up is encouraged. Extra copies of the

Tuesday Book Discussion
“My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel” by Ari Shavit is the
non fiction work to be discussed at the March 14 meeting of the Killingworth
Library Tuesday Book Discussion Group. Shavit is a columnist and serves on the
editorial board of Haaretz, Israel’s oldest daily newspaper. L. Wieseltier in his
NYT review described the book as the work of one who came “not to praise or
to blame...but instead to observe and to reflect.” Discussion begins at 1 p.m. in
the meeting room.

Book Review: “Thank You For Your Service” by David Finkel
By Kathleen Amoia
In light of
the popularity
of the current
Oscarn
nominated
movie,
“American
Sniper”, I
finished a
half written
book review
from last year.
It seemed relevant.
“Thank You for Your Service”
by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist
David Finkel is a superbly written
account of the demons faced by
vets returning from Iraq. Never in
the picture himself, Finkel follows
some of the men he wrote about
in “The Good Soldiers”, the 2-16
Battalion out of Fort Riley, Kansas.
With clean, almost poetic
writing, Finkel takes us through the
vets’ struggles and the rampant
anxieties that one medication on
top of another cannot beat back.
Young wives bewildered and scared,
sometimes just bone tired and
lonely, find themselves married to
men they no longer recognize. The
picture of the army is one of a force
struggling to find a protocol that
works, and doing it with too few
trained personnel on the verge of
burnout themselves.
The realities of TBI and PTSD and
the inadequacies of military efforts
to deal with them are soul wrenching.
I held my breath as one man, desperate
to get help and with very little time
to get enrolled in a program, had to
navigate his base to get 39 signatures
while trying to remember his keys
and his hat and the directions to the
next place and the place after that.
That he succeeded is a testament to
his character and his determination
to get well.
Throughout the book, Finkel
addresses the alarming rates of
suicide head on. He describes the
work of General Peter Chiarelli,
Vice Chief of Staff, as he conducts
post mortem discussions on the
suicides from the viewpoint of
“lessons learned.” “We are more
interested in the lessons learned from
the cases and what you are doing
about it than necessarily the details,
although they are helpful. Okay?” One
eulogist at the service for a 21 year
old who had been sent home from the
war and killed himself in his barracks is
quoted as saying “What is there to say
at this point except thank you for your
service?” What indeed!
The courage, the honesty, the
aching humanity of the vets Finkel
follows in this book are testament
to the best that it is in us to be. The
message is simply we owe them that in
return. “Thank You for Your Service” is
on the Killingworth Library’s nonfiction
shelves under 362.8609 Fin. The library
also has the book that precedes this
one, “The Good Soldiers”, about many
of the same men. It can be found
shelved under 956.7044 Fin.

Farm Market Is Coming To Town
While the
accumulation of snow
can mean a lot of work
and worry, there is
also tremendous beauty in the season. We are thrilled
to have witnessed cross country skiers, birders, dog
walkers and snow shoers enjoying the fields and trails
at the farm in recent months… a perfect way to get
some fresh air and exercise.
Spring is just around the corner and with it comes
some exciting news. Currently in development are
plans for a Parmelee Farm market to be held on the
second Saturday of June, July, August, and September.
The emphasis will be on locally grown produce with a
few quality artisans on hand as well. If you are a local
produce farmer or artisan who might be interested in
participating, stay tuned for more information. It will be
posted in the Krier along with instructions for applying
for space.
Several weddings are booked this summer and
there are ongoing discussions with a wilderness
program regarding a possible nature camp. These are
the type of community events the Parmelee Committee
has dreamed of and planned for years. The thrill of
seeing it all come to fruition, in large part due to the
generosity of so many of our businesses and residents, is
immeasurable.
To become a Parmelee Farm volunteer contact Tim
Gannon at (860)395-9887 or [email protected] for
more information.
We hope to see you at the farm!

PAMELA MURPHY, DO
THE DOCTOR IS IN is a new monthly column geared toward answering your
general health concerns. Local Physician Pamela Murphy, DO has generously
agreed to participate and will answer one question each month received from
our readers. If you have a health and wellness question or topic you would
like discussed, please e-mail your request to the Killingworth Krier at krier@
killingworthct.com with THE DOCTOR IS IN in your subject line. All questions
will remain anonymous.
Dr. Murphy – what is the difference between a DO and an MD?
Excellent question! Since the late 1800’s there have been two types of
licensed physicians in the United States, DO and MD. They both complete 4
years of medical school and they both can pursue any specialty area - family
practice, ob/gyn, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, etc. The major difference is in
their philosophies and training during medical school.
The osteopathic (DO) philosophy has a more holistic approach - the body
has the inherent ability to heal itself and we, the physicians, are facilitators
in that process. Allopathic (MD) philosophy is more geared toward curing
disease. In Osteopathic medical schools, students are trained additionally in
osteopathic manipulative treatments - some are similar to what a chiropractor
can do but there are many more techniques studied and learned.

outstanding students since first recorded in 1986.

What’s Cooking In Killingworth?
On March 17th, the Irish and
the Irish -at-heart will celebrate St.
Patricks Day with parades, festivities
and the wearing and eating of
a whole lot o’green . One of the
specialty foods that have become a
staple in home kitchens, restaurants
and bakeries during the holiday
is Irish Soda Bread. The traditional
recipe has been an Irish classic since
the 1840s when bicarbonate of soda
was introduced. As is true of some of
the best breads in the world, Irish Soda
Bread is a product of a poor country
made with very basic ingredients. There
are many recipe variations, one of which
is shared here by Killingworth resident
Linda Dudek.
IRISH SODA BREAD
4 cups all purpose flour (sifted
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 ½ tbs caraway seed
¼ cup butter
2 ½ cups light or dark raisins
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
1 egg (unbeaten)
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg yolk OR a little cream
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease 2 quart casserole.
Sift together flour, sugar, salt and
baking powder. Stir in caraway seed.
With pastry blender or 2 knives scissor
fashion cut in butter until like coarse
corn meal. Stir in raisins. Combine
buttermilk, egg and soda. Stir into
flour mixture until just moistened.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured
surface. Knead dough lightly until
smooth. Shape into ball. Place in
casserole. With sharp knife make 4 inch
cross, ¼ inch deep in center of ball.
Brush with yolk, beaten with fork.
Bake 1 hour 20 minutes or until cake
tester inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool bread in baking dish 10 minutes.
Turn out on rack to finish cooling.

Senior Life
Virginia Nedza is a resident of
the Beechwood Community in
Killingworth. Her paintings will be on
display at the Killingworth Library for
the month of March.
“Art has always been an important
part of my life. As a teenager I studied
the basics of drawing and painting with
artist Adam Wasicki of Middletown.
James Guy expanded my exposure and
experience with different styles in oils,
acrylics, pastels and pen and ink. For the
past 25 years photography has drawn
my attention into the world of nature,”
says Nedza.
“With the encouragement of a
friend, I recently undertook the study
of watercolor. I now enjoy plein air
painting with fellow Killingworth
artists,” she continues.
“An artist expresses what is closest
to the heart, and to his/her own
experience. As I explored the medium,
I found my ‘heart’ in painting nature,”
she concludes.
Nedza has done work for the
Wethersfield Historical Society and the
Waterbury Rails-to-Trails organization.

Town Hall News
Killingworth loses two loyal
citizens. Carolyn Gordon, who served
as the secretary to the selectmen for
fifteen years, passed away in February.
Those who visited Town Hall during
her tenure remember her smiling
face, her impeccably neat desk, and
her fond talk of her beloved family
- to whom the selectmen send their

sincere condolences.
Gaylord “Rocky” Rockwell was a
private man who performed vital public service for over
thirty years. As a member and in recent years chair of the
Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission, Rocky
worked to protect the natural environment that makes
Killingworth so special. We will miss him.
Senior lunch café comes to Killingworth. Starting
March 4, the Estuary Council of Seniors will offer a hot,
nutritious lunch to seniors every Wednesday at the
Killingworth Congregational Church Parish Hall. Lunch will
be served promptly at noon.
Nancy Eastwood, a registered dietician, oversees the
menus and ensures that they are healthy and satisfying. The
meals are supported by the Senior Resources Agency on Aging
with federal Title III funds from the Older Americans Act.
For those age 60 and over, there is a suggested donation
of $3.00 per meal. For younger folks, the cost is $12.51.
Please call in your lunch reservations in advance at 860388-1611, before 11:00 a.m. on the Tuesday before. Provide
your full name and the date you wish to come to the café.
All are welcome! Bring your friends! Thanks to the
Estuary Council and the Killingworth Congregational
Church for agreeing to provide this long-awaited chance
to share a meal and good company.
Connections. Killingworth belongs to several coalitions of
towns, both regional and statewide. Through them, we share
resources, conduct research, exchange information, and lobby
the state legislature on issues affecting municipalities and
their taxpayers. Among these organizations are:
The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, with
156 of the 169 Connecticut municipalities as members,
provides services including custom surveys of town practices,
training programs, municipal insurance, and joint purchase
arrangements. For 2015, CCM’s lobbying priorities include
property tax relief and reduction in unfunded mandates—
state requirements that the municipalities must pay for.
The Council of Small Towns represents its members’
interests in legislative and regulatory matters. While
municipalities of all sizes share many concerns, some
issues have a particularly strong impact on small towns.
For example, COST has taken the lead in preserving state
support for the resident state trooper program.
RiverCOG is a regional Council of Governments, one
of nine in the state. RiverCOG comprises 17 towns, from
Cromwell to Old Lyme. The COG coordinates regional
land-use and transportation planning, offers services such
as hazardous waste collection and GIS mapping, and helps
towns collaborate on joint efforts. Federal and some state
transportation funds are distributed through the COG.

Thinking Spring? Thinking Summer? Think:
The Second Annual Killingworth Foundation Sunflower Project
Will last year’s winners continue their reign,
or will newcomers claim the titles? Check out
the Foundation’s Face Book page to see pictures
of last year’s event. The Sunflower gathering
will be held at Parmelee Farm on September 12,
together with the fourth and final Farm Market
of the season. Bring your entries and browse
the fresh local produce, artisan breads and
crafts.
The Sunflower Project is a community-wide
family event sponsored by the Killingworth
Foundation. Look for details in upcoming
publications.
