From the desk of the principal…
Happy New Year and Welcome Back! I trust that
you enjoyed a peaceful holiday season. As we
prepare for the last half of our school year, I look
ahead with anticipation to a full semester of
learning and fun. We are excited to celebrate our
teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week during
the first week of February. We normally honor
teachers in May, but we’ve moved it up on the
calendar this year since May is so busy. If you want
to express thanks to your child’s teacher, the PTO
will be sending home some ideas in Thursday
folders later this month. I look forward to
celebrating the amazing staff of teachers at West
Field.
At West Field we love reading to learn and reading
for pleasure! To celebrate reading for the fun of it,
we will host a school-wide read-a-thon on Friday,
January 29th from 2pm – 3pm. Visit with your child
about a fun book they will be reading!
With the opening of the State legislative session and
the recent federal passage of the Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA) replacing No Child Left Behind,
I anticipate many education bills to be introduced
when legislators convene from now until May. We
had a visit in late December from Senator Stephanie
Bice and are expecting a visit from Representative
Kevin Calvey later this month. I encourage parents
to contact lawmakers regarding education issues
that matter to you. Here is the information for our
legislators.

Please join us for our next meeting on January 20th at
3:30 in the library.
Our next meeting is Thursday, January 21st from 3:15
– 4:00 pm. Parents, PLEASE be sure your students
are picked up by 4:00 pm, so that our teacher
volunteers can get their rooms ready for the next
day.
Spirit store will be on Friday, February 5th in the 5th
Grade POD.
Nurse Notes
Please remember the “sick student” policy from the
EPS Student Handbook:
Students with a temperature of 100 degrees or
higher, or who are vomiting or have diarrhea may
NOT remain at school. Students may return to
school when they have been fever/symptom free for
24 hours without medication.
Remember to encourage hand washing during this
time of year to help keep everyone healthy!
We would greatly appreciate donations of new
packages of undies (sizes XS, S, M). It’s helpful to
keep a change of clothing in your child’s backpack as
they are most comfortable in their own set of clothes
when the need arises.

Media Center News
Welcome to 2016! Our 3rd – 5th graders have the
opportunity to participate in a special Sequoyah
Book Project challenge. An information sheet was
sent home before Winter Break, but I will send
home reminder notes soon. This is an optional
activity. Students can read one (or more if desired)
2015 Children’s Sequoyah Award books and
complete at-home projects displaying their
comprehension of the book(s). Projects will be
displayed in the library and participants will be
invited to a special event in the library.

Great Kindness Challenge
January 25-29th will be a week dedicated to creating
a culture of kindness at schools nationwide. Our
school, along with all the other Edmond elementary
schools, are participating in this proactive, positive
bullying prevention initiative. All students will
receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist with 50
kind deeds. Please encourage your child to complete
the checklist and show the world that KINDNESS
MATTERS! Watch for more information as we get
closer to the date!
Jump Rope for Heart
This year West Field is participating in the Jump Rope
for Heart program. Your child brought home an
information packet and collection envelope in their
Thursday Folder on January 7th. The collection
envelope will be due on Monday, January 25th. All
money needs to be turned in to our PE Teachers, Ms.
King or Mr. Turner.
