Wildcat News Volume 10, Issue 4 West Field Elementary School Crosslin’s Corner From the desk of the principal… Happy New Year and Welcome Back! I trust that you enjoyed a peaceful holiday season. As we prepare for the last half of our school year, I look ahead with anticipation to a full semester of learning and fun. We are excited to celebrate our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week during the first week of February. We normally honor teachers in May, but we’ve moved it up on the calendar this year since May is so busy. If you want to express thanks to your child’s teacher, the PTO will be sending home some ideas in Thursday folders later this month. I look forward to celebrating the amazing staff of teachers at West Field. At West Field we love reading to learn and reading for pleasure! To celebrate reading for the fun of it, we will host a school-wide read-a-thon on Friday, January 29th from 2pm – 3pm. Visit with your child about a fun book they will be reading! With the opening of the State legislative session and the recent federal passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replacing No Child Left Behind, I anticipate many education bills to be introduced when legislators convene from now until May. We had a visit in late December from Senator Stephanie Bice and are expecting a visit from Representative Kevin Calvey later this month. I encourage parents to contact lawmakers regarding education issues that matter to you. Here is the information for our legislators. Senator Stephanie Bice: [email protected] (405) 521-5592 Rep. Kevin Calvey: [email protected] (405) 557-7357 Lisa Crosslin January 2016 West Field Families What a blessing you have been to one another! Because of your generosity, 4 West Field families received gifts, foods, and gift cards this Christmas! THANK YOU for caring for your school community! I am proud to be a part of such an amazing school! Mrs. Shryock New Website Be sure to check out West Field’s redesigned website at http://westfield.edmondschools.net. Office News Morning Drop-Off is from 7:55 to 8:20 am at the back of the school. There is a teacher on duty during this time frame. Afternoon Pick-Up is from 3:15 to 3:45 pm at the back of the school. Students must be picked up no later than 3:45 pm or they will be taken to Ace’s Place, our on-site daycare, and the daily fee will be charged. Changes in the way your child goes home must be made with a note or email to the teacher in the morning, and/or a call to the office before 2:45 pm. Visits by parents to classrooms need to be scheduled with the teacher in advance. Check out from the Office must be before 3:00 pm. After 3:00 you will need to drive around to the back of the school and use your yellow car visor strip. No School – Monday, 1/18 In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, please remember that there is no school on Monday, January 18th. Principal West Field Elementary School Page 1 January 2016 Wildcat News PTO News KC Club News Please join us for our next meeting on January 20th at 3:30 in the library. Our next meeting is Thursday, January 21st from 3:15 – 4:00 pm. Parents, PLEASE be sure your students are picked up by 4:00 pm, so that our teacher volunteers can get their rooms ready for the next day. Spirit store will be on Friday, February 5th in the 5th Grade POD. Nurse Notes Please remember the “sick student” policy from the EPS Student Handbook: Students with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, or who are vomiting or have diarrhea may NOT remain at school. Students may return to school when they have been fever/symptom free for 24 hours without medication. Remember to encourage hand washing during this time of year to help keep everyone healthy! We would greatly appreciate donations of new packages of undies (sizes XS, S, M). It’s helpful to keep a change of clothing in your child’s backpack as they are most comfortable in their own set of clothes when the need arises. Jennifer Stavish, RN, School Nurse Media Center News Welcome to 2016! Our 3rd – 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in a special Sequoyah Book Project challenge. An information sheet was sent home before Winter Break, but I will send home reminder notes soon. This is an optional activity. Students can read one (or more if desired) 2015 Children’s Sequoyah Award books and complete at-home projects displaying their comprehension of the book(s). Projects will be displayed in the library and participants will be invited to a special event in the library. Don't forget to LIKE our Facebook page!
