Early Admissions Exercise
Confident Learners with the passion to excel.
Active Citizens with a heart to serve

You can secure a place in a Polytechnic
before even sitting for their O-Level
Examinations.

Even if you do not meet the Cut-Off
Points for the Course, 4E5N students can
enter a poly course of their choosing as
long as they get
› Net ELR2B2 of 26 points and
› meet the minimum entry requirements of the
course.
Previously - DPA
Now - Early Admissions Exercise (EAE)
Key Changes & Features
Polytechnics
1.
Expand DPA and rename it Early
Admissions Exercise (EAE); fold JPSAE
into EAE
2.
Raise course-level allowance for intake
into selected courses via EAE
4
Key Changes & Features
WHAT?

Allows polytechnics to select students based on aptitudes
and interests before O-Level results are released
› Focus on course-specific aptitudes and interests
› Non-course-specific achievements, e.g. sports, leadership, also
considered

Various modes of assessment, e.g. interviews, aptitude tests,
portfolios, depending on polytechnic and course

Still required to meet polytechnic admissions criteria but do
not have to compete with other students for entry strictly on
basis of relative academic performance
5
Key Changes & Features
WHO?

Singapore Citizen / Permanent Resident students registered
for O-Levels in year of EAE

International Students in Government, Government-aided, or
Independent Schools, and registered to sit for O-Levels in
year of EAE

Up to 12.5% of total polytechnic intake
6
Key Changes & Features
WHEN?

Held before release of O-Level results; successful applicants
receive conditional offers
› Place in the course subject to meeting admissions criteria
 Net ELR2B2 score of 26 points or better at O-Levels
 Minimum entry requirements for polytechnic course

When O-Level results are released:
Meet Criteria
Don’t Meet Criteria
Confirm offer, not eligible
for all other admissions
exercises
Offer revoked, can take part in
other admissions exercises (same
as other O-Level candidates)
7
Key Changes & Features

EAE focused on courses for which aptitude-based admissions
is most meaningful
› Where interests and strengths in the field are particularly
important, e.g. design and media, social and healthcare
services

Course-level intake allowance for EAE and EAE(I)
› For selected courses = 50%
› For all other courses = 30%

Possible Scenarios
Interested in
computer games
from young, picked
up basic coding
Joined secondary
school IT Club; took up
AEM in Intro to Digital
Game Development
Decided to
apply via EAE
Researched on the various
polytechnic course offerings
online, visited the
polytechnics’ open houses
and ECG Centres to find out
more
Talked to a friend’s
uncle who works in
the IT industry
Selected 3 IT-related courses
that interested her the most;
started preparing write-ups
on why she was interested in
the courses; put together
portfolio of best coding work
Talked to Form
Teacher and ECG
Counsellor to
prepare for
interview

Common Misconceptions
Common Misconceptions

There are still other avenues to enter
the polytechnics, e.g. using your OLevel results to apply during JAE

However, if you have strong interests
in and aptitude for specific courses in
the polytechnics, you are
encouraged to consider applying via
EAE
14
Common Misconceptions

You will need to demonstrate interest in the
courses applied for

If you accept an offer and meet minimum
entry requirements, you will not be eligible
for all other admissions exercises, and will
not be able to switch courses

Hence, if you are uncertain about your
interests or the course to apply for, you may
wish to apply for admission to polytechnic
through JAE instead
15
Common Misconceptions

Need to meet polytechnic admissions criteria
›
Net ELR2B2 aggregate of 26 points or better for
O-Level exams
›
Minimum entry requirements (MERs) for diploma
course


E.g. MERs for Diploma in Creative Writing for Television
& New Media are B4 for English, D7 for Math, C6 for
any three other subjects
Requisite academic foundation in order to cope
with the rigour of the diploma course
16
Common Misconceptions

If you accept an offer, you can still
withdraw your acceptance during the
Withdrawal Stage (27 Aug – 7 Oct 2016)
and participate in JAE when O-Level results
are released

If you do not withdraw by 7 Oct 2016, you
will not be eligible for other polytechnic
admissions exercises or be able switch
courses
17
Common Misconceptions

12.5% is not a target, but is instead an
allowance that polytechnics may utilise

Extent of utilisation would vary year-on-year
depending on number and calibre of
applicants
18
Common Misconceptions

Course-level caps on admissions through
EAE ensures that there continues to be
sufficient places set aside for students
applying through the JAE and other
admissions exercises
19
Common Misconceptions

All full-time diploma courses that are
available in JAE are open for application
through EAE

Some courses may have higher courselevel intake allowances than others, e.g.
those for which ability to do well depends
on range of qualities beyond just
academic grades, and where passion for
vocation that course will lead to is
especially important


Secure a place before sitting for O-level examinations.

Place in the course subject to meeting admissions criteria
 Net ELR2B2 score of 26 points or better at O-Levels
 Minimum entry requirements for polytechnic course
• Avenue for those with strong interests and aptitude in a particular
area to secure a place in the course of their interest.
• Selection based on aptitude and interests and students need to
submit a write-up, create a portfolio & have relevant supporting
certificates and when short-listed attend interviews.
• No of places for such a group is increased to 12.5%
For selected courses up to 30%-50%
•
It is anticipated that the cut-off points maybe raised after O-levels if
space is limited for certain courses.
22

Only for students who are certain that they want to opt for
polytechnic education in a particular course of interest.

If you accept an offer and meet minimum entry requirements,
you will not be eligible for all other admissions exercises, and
will not be able to switch courses

If after O-levels and you have done better to go to a JC, you
will not be allowed to switch.

Providing Support for Students

EAE is not meant as yet another test or
assessment that you need to prepare for
›
Avenue for those with strong interests and
aptitude in a particular field of study to secure a
place in the course of their interest
›
You should:

Explore your interests and develop them
further

Explore the polytechnic courses and related

Prepare write-ups
 EAE application requires applicants to do a short-writeup about their reasons for wanting to enter the course
 Provide clear concise descriptions about your

26

