Upcoming Events: Regular Council Meeting scheduled for November 18, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Council Chambers , 21 Main Street South in Markstay Facts On Remembrance Day Remembrance Day commemorates Canadians who died in the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War. It is held every November 11. • • The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. • • From 1923 to 1931, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. Thanksgiving was also celebrated on this day. • The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for Veterans. In 1931, MP Allan Neill introduced a bill to hold Armistice Day on a fixed day - November 11. During the bill's introduction, it was decided the word "Remembrance" would be used instead of "Armistice." The bill passed and Remembrance Day was first conducted on November 11, 1931. Thanksgiving Day was moved to October 12 that year. The Canada Remembers Program through Veterans Affairs Canada endeavours to keep alive the achievements and sacrifices made by those who served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace and to promote an understanding of the significance of these efforts in Canadian life as we know it today. As most people in Canada today have never experienced war, "Remembrance" becomes a challenging concept to incorporate. How do you remember what you haven't known? Some have been fortunate to have had relatives; grandparents, aunts, uncles, great-grand parents, who shared their stories of war and peace. Although many of us cannot actually "remember," we owe it to those who have served to learn, to understand, and to appreciate the task they have undertaken. Generations of Canadian Veterans, through their courage, determination and sacrifice have helped to ensure that we live in a free and peaceful country. If we can understand this, how can we not pause and say "thank you" in remembrance of such an accomplishment? 11:00 a.m. Warren Cenotaph, 39 Lafontaine Street (in case of inclement weather: Markstay-Warren Community Centre Upstairs hall) 12:00 noon Lunch at the Markstay-Warren Community Centre—Upstairs Hall 1:30 p.m. Markstay Memorial Site, Corner of Pioneer Street and Hill Street (in case of inclement weather: Markstay Public School gymnasium, 7 Pioneer Street East) Followed by refreshments at the Markstay Golden Age and Senior Citizen Club, 8 Church St. The Warren Landfill site is now operating on the winter hours: WEDNESDAYS & SATURDAYS 9 AM TO 5 PM The Markstay-Warren Hoedown and Fun Day organizing committee would like to thank the Markstay-Warren Fire Department for their time and effort toward the event. We look forward to working with all our volunteers again in the future. We would like to thank the Annual Markstay Bat & Smash event and Claudette Laframboise for their recent monetary donation toward the medical portion of the multi-use facility. Total to date raised is $18,833.14. Feature of the Month ARMS OPEN Arms Open is a service that provides companionship and respite services for seniors and their caregivers. Arms Open enables seniors to stay at home or travel, as long as possible, by providing trusted individual care, privacy, safety and dignity. Arms Open is available to go to your home at any time, for however long you need the help and you can have the same person come to your home whether it be for an hour or a weekend or weeks at a time. Arms Open has ten years experience working with seniors and their caregivers and is especially looking forward to helping the underserviced areas of Wahnapitae, Markstay, Hagar, Verner, Warren, St. Charles and Noelville. “I’ve always enjoyed being with seniors. Their life stories can be incredible. Having worked with seniors, I know they would much prefer to be at home or with family, but sometimes they need that extra bit of help. The number one fear our seniors have is falling. Having someone there can be a great relief.” says the Director of Care Sue Grier. Sue Grier has ten years experience as a personal support worker in a long term care facility and thoroughly enjoys being with seniors. Her genuine concern for their emotional and physical well-being makes her an ideal person to provide this type of much needed service. She invites seniors and caregivers of seniors to contact her for more information at 677-4747 or at [email protected] MARKSTAY-WARREN PAGE 2 WARREN ARENA CDC MEMBERS WANTED 2009-2010 Public Skating & Skinny Schedule TUESDAY Public Skating 4:00 pm—5:00 pm Atom & Under Shinny 5:00 pm—6:00 pm WEDNESDAY Do you want to make a difference in your community? PAGE 3 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 11- November 1st, 2009 “Around and About Town” A New Front for Education in Markstay-Warren By Christiane Colard There has been a lot of construction going on in the Town of Markstay-Warren these past few months. Two of the town’s four schools have been getting makeovers. Markstay Public School, on Pioneer Street in Markstay, has received a facelift over the past few months. New windows and a new exterior have been installed making the school look brand new. There is also a new play structure outside for students to enjoy, which is also accessible to community children during the after-school hours. École publique Camille-Perron students saw their school torn down over the summer to make way for a brand new building . The new portion of the school will have four classrooms, a daycare center, an office, a teacher’s lounge and two washrooms. The part of the building that remains will still contain the gymnasium, the library/computer room, the science laboratory, three classrooms and a book room, as well as two washrooms. St. Mark’s School, which currently shares the building with École publique Camille-Perron, will still be able to use the school after the renovations and construction. Presently, Camille-Perron and St. Marc students are enjoying recesses at the Rainbow’s Edge playground, across the street from the school. When the construction is complete, both schools will enjoy a fully renovated schoolyard. Students from Markstay-Warren and surrounding area are certainly being treated to beautifully renovated buildings. They will soon be learning more within these new, comfortable environments. Author’s Profile Christiane Colard is a lifelong resident of Markstay-Warren. She and her husband are currently planning to build their first home next summer, in the town of Markstay. She has a bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Education at Laurentian University and is currently working as a teacher for the Conseil Scolaire publique du Grand-Nord de l’ Ontario, at the elementary school level. Her hobbies are reading and writing. Christiane is looking forward to being a regular contributor to the Markstay-Warren newsletter. YMCA Markstay Childcare Center Open year round 7:00am to 6:00pm.
