E-mail us at: [email protected] For more alumni information, check out the DCAA link at http://www.divinechildhighschool.org MESSAGE from the Principal As I watched our seniors receive their diplomas this May, I thought back to my own graduation and what I imagined God had in store for me. Never could I have expected that so much of my professional life would be tied to this family-centered faith community. Only the uniforms are different today, but the aspirations of Divine Child graduates remains the same. We are all committed to living lives of meaning and purpose that are true to our God-Given gifts. May and June are also the season when alumni return to campus to give us updates on their progress in college and beyond. We were excited to hear that Duncan Miller'09 is involved in the Space X Low Orbit Mission that recently connected with the International Space Station and that Andrew Rauh '11 is interning with the computer engineers who created Facebook's platform and who have now launched Path. These recent graduates are making a name for themselves in science and engineering circles. They are by no means alone as the achievements of DC's ten thousand living graduates are easily the envy of every college preparatory school in our area. What defines a Falcon's path forward is a relentless focus on excellence. Many of our current Falcons are making a name for themselves while they are still enrolled at DCHS. Two school records were broken; the 400 meter dash by Paige Patterson and the 4x100 relay by Kayla Gandy, Liz Mullen, Rosanna Reynolds, MalloryMyler as they led our girls track and field team to a second state title in 3 years. The track team joins our Forensics team in achieving the highest honors in the state. Our marching band earned the vote of the majority of Detroiters for their exceptional performance in the America's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Our Fine Arts Department dominated the Page Awards with outstanding individual and ensemble efforts for the productions of The Diary of Anne Frank and Annie Get Your Gun. We are blessed to have such a talented and driven student body who give their all to academics and to extra-curricular. The more things change, the more they stay the same. At Divine Child High School, our current and former students are still reaching for the stars and being led to grace as surely as the Magi who followed a star in the East. We recognize ourselves as a blessed community and remain true to the promise of our baptism. We do not know exactly where God will call us, but we remain certain that the call will give us a chance to “play our best for Him” Think how much bigger our stage will be when we inaugurate our new Sports Complex in 2013. Have a wonderful and safe summer! Peggy Knuth '72 Principal MESSAGE from the Pastor Dear Falcons, Another successful academic year has culminated in the graduation of our high school seniors. Graduation is always a wonderful time to celebrate students' accomplishments and, yet, there is sadness when everyone bids farewell to an outstanding Catholic school community. Our faith, however, always beckons us back to the Altar to receive the Holy Eucharist, where we are all united despite distance and new directions in life. We are always reminded that the education we have received here at Divine Child is possible only because of the mission of the Catholic Church to serve through the Sacraments, service and education. Life may have its way of sending us in different directions or throwing a curve ball at us; however, we remain confident and unwavering because of what we have learned and received through our Catholic education. Our future always look bright and hopeful when we look through the eyes of faith in the Lord and, no matter where we are, we come together through our time, talent and treasure -- for we are the Body of Christ! This year, we say goodbye to our faculty members who are retiring from many dedicated years of service to Divine Child Schools. Bernie Daly is retiring from the elementary school, where she has prepared our second graders to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Most Holy Eucharist, along with all the subjects our little ones need to learn, especially writing and reading! Also, Pam Romanelli, Sally Kilcullen and Karen Pritchard are retiring from the high school. These faith-filled women will be missed, and we honor them for their dedication and great love for Catholic schools and its educational endeavors. The Divine Child Parish/School community is blessed to welcome our new Director of Advancement, Kristin Hermann. Kristin is vibrant and focused, and she has a greatdeal of enthusiasm tohelp fulfill Divine Child's mission. She is also an alumna of our elementary and high school! We are blessed that the Lord has sent her to us. I ask you to please keep Divine Child parish and schools in your prayers. Ask the Lord how you can help support us in our mission to evangelize to our troubled world through faith and education. As alumni, we need your prayers and support so that Divine Child may continue to be a beacon of light and hope in the Archdiocese of Detroit. And please, stop by and take a stroll through our campus -- it continues to be beautifully maintained, inside and out. In Gratitude, Rev. Jim Bilot Pastor 3 www.divinechildhighschool.org HIGH SCHOOL NEWS LETTER from the Director of Advancement Dear Fellow Alumni, The year was 1986. The uniform was green polyester with matching bolero. The classroom was Mrs. Murphy's typewriting class. Like many of you, I spent a semester mastering the placement of 10 fingers on the keys of an electric typewriter. Who would have guessed that just a few decades later I would abandon 8 of those fingers in favor of two thumbs on the screen of an iPhone? And who would have guessed that those electric typewriters would be abandoned in favor of Livescribe pens and iPad mobile carts? As educational technology has developed, Divine Child has kept pace with an innovative group of teachers who are utilizing technology to enhance student learning. Our Physics teacher has the technology necessary to regularly “flip” his classroom - allowing students to view video lectures at home and work on assignments in class. The Science department utilizes a microscope that connects to all the iPads in the classroom, providing the entire class with a view under the lens. The English department is introducing the art of digital storytelling. Across the curriculum, teachers are creating their own iBooks to be used as supplementary material for the upcoming school year. This use of new technology has resulted in increased student engagement and enhanced student achievement. an excellent education in an environmentcentered in Gospel values and Christian tradition. The continued support for this mission is evidenced by the fact that Divine Child remains the largest co-educational Catholic parish school in the State. The opportunity for a Divine Child education does not come cheap however, and for many of our families, the cost constitutes a large portion of their budgets. While we carefully manage resources in an effort to keep tuition prices reasonable (the technology budget, for instance, is modest, but creatively managed), the reality is that only a portion of the cost of a Divine Child education is covered by tuition. The remaining cost is supported through the generosity of our parents, parishioners and a small, but loyal, group of our Alumni. If you believe that the education you received at Divine Child - a Catholic education centered in Gospel values and Christian tradition, an education that provides a critical balance of academic, creative, social and spiritual formation - has given you a firm foundation in life, please show your gratitude for what was given to you, and offer your financial support to Divine Child. Our annual Heart of Divine Child appeal will be taking place again this fall. Please consider making an annual contribution to the School. But don't think you need to wait until November to show your support of Divine Child. TheAdvancement Office is open year round, and I would be happy to discuss other giving opportunities with you, whether it be through donations to the Divine Child Education Fund, establishment of a scholarship, or planned giving through bequests, beneficiary designations and/or gifts of property. We need the help of all of our Alumni in order to continue providing the next generation of Falcons with the exceptional educational and spiritual foundation we received. Though things have changed quite a bit technologically, and in other ways, at Divine Child, the core mission has remained the same since the first freshman class walked through the front doors in 1958 - to provide young men and women with Kind regards, Student Council State Conference 2012 National Merit Scholarship Kristin (Szpunar) Hermann '89 Director of Advancement This past March, the Divine Child Student Council attended the MASC/MAHS State Conference. This year's conference, which was held at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, was the largest conference in MASC/MAHS history with 1,500 students and advisers in attendance. The theme, “You Don't Need a Cape to be a Hero”, challenged the students to think about what they could do in their schools and community to make a difference. The annual State Conference is the place where student councils and honor societies are recognized for the work they have done throughout the year, and provide an opportunity for students to swap ideas to bring back to their schools. DC's Student Council earned the organization's highest honor, the Award of Excellence as well as earning the Star Award for their participation in MASC/MAHS events. National Merit Finalists Michelle Kerr (Daughter of Timothy Kerr '77 and Denise (Uetz) Kerr `78) and Matthew Bustamante (Son of Mark Bustamante`78 and Elaine (Karrer) Bustamante`78) Science Fair Retirements On January 28th we held our annual Science Fair. There were lots of great projects which led to a tie for Grand Award. Our two grand award winners were Fiona Van Antwerp, who re-designed a bee hive to avoid winter die off, and David Bustamante, who build a muon detector to measure variation in cosmic rays. In first place was Justin Dolkowski with Microbial Fuel Cell, and in second place was Maria Matta with Identification For New Therapies For Mesothelioma. Congratulations to the following Divine Child High School teachers who retired at the end of this year. Karen Pritchard 37 years with 35 at DC, Sally Kilcullen 35 years with 33 at DC and Pam Romanelli 35 years with 24 at DC. Their passion and dedication to the profession have touched all of us in countless ways, and their sense of humor, a requirement in teaching is a gift they readily share. After the Divine Child High School Science Fair during Catholic Schools Week, students participated in the Metro-Detroit Science and Engineering Fair on Wednesday, March 14. David Bustamante earned a first place in his category with "Measuring Solar Cosmic Rays through Surface Muon Detection. Fiona Van David Bustamante (Son of Mark Bustamante`78 and Elaine (Karrer) Antwerp finished with a first place in her category for her project entitled Bustamante`78) "Surviving Winter Kill" in apiaries. There were1.5 million students that took the PSAT,and Kevin Hart, Griffin Miller, and Dustin Klavon (Son of David Klavon '83 and Donna (Poshadlio) Klavon '84) have met the first step toward becoming a semi-finalist. Fiona Van Antwerp (Daughter of Loretta (McCarthy) Van Antwerp `86) L-R: Karen Pritchard, Sally Kilcullen and Pam Romanelli HIGH SCHOOL NEWS News from the Math Department The Math Department is proud to announce that we will be offering a Calculus 2 course for the first time during the next school year. Our current enrollment of students in AP Calculus includes a number of 11th graders that are now eligible for the Honors Calculus 2 course. Our Honors Calculus 2 course is designed essentially the same as that in any college or university. Calculus 2 is a requirement for students majoring in science, engineering, computer science, mathematics, business and other fields. We are proud to offer this course at Divine Child High School to these advanced students. The Advanced Placement courses are designed for those students who have outstanding ability and interest in mathematics. All students who take our AP Calculus course also take the examination designed by the College Entrance Examination Board. Their scores are then reported to colleges for possible credit and advanced placement in college mathematics. Congratulations Timothy Award Winners!! A Timothy Award recognizes Catholic teens for their leadership and service. It is appropriately named because St. Paul once said to his young friend Timothy, a pastor and bishop of the early Church. “Do not let anyone look down upon you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith and purity. (1Tim 4:12) This year, over 70 teens from 15 different parishes were presented Timothy Awards. Two award winners from Divine Child Parish were Peter Micalle '15, (Son of Jodi Ann (Zahra) Micallef '83) Timothy Youth Appreciation Award and Brandon Ebert '14, the Timothy Award of Excellence. Congratulations to both! Hello from our Fine Arts Department! What a great year with many accomplishments in our Fine Arts department. I would like to congratulate the Marching Band for their great performance in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade last November as they won Best Band and made Divine Child High School proud! I also want to take this time to congratulate Mrs. Pritchard and Ms. Noeske for two great productions, our play - Diary of Anne Frank and our musical - Annie Get Your Gun. Both these performances were a great showcase of our student talent at Divine Child and both shows had record audience attendance. I am very proud to announce that Divine Child High School took best play and best musical at the Dearborn Page Awards! Mrs. Pritchard earned best director, Mr. Bush earned best orchestra and Dr. Urbiel earned best chorus and a number of our student actors won best lead or supporting role. Congratulations to all in our theater department. I congratulate Mr. Zemba and Mr. Gryzko for their time and efforts in this year's Art Show and I congratulate all our art students for their excellent artistic capabilities. I thank Mrs. Sovine for all the wonderful smells coming down the halls from our foods room and for hosting our iron chef and cupcake wars for the students! I congratulate Dr. Urbiel for the first time in DC history taking the varsity chorus students to choral festival and earning a medal! Way to go kids! As you can see, the largest department in the school is doing great. I am looking forward to another great year of theater productions, great sounds from our music room, exceptional art from our students in the art department and some wonderful food and smells from our foods area. I am grateful for your continued support of our Fine Arts department. See you next year! Mr. Robert Bush, Fine Arts Chairperson Falcon Singers Soar This has been a wonderful year of growth for the Divine Child High School Choirs. In November of 2011, the Show Choir sang Christmas carols in the aesthetically and acoustically fabulous lobby of the Fox Theatre before viewing a superb production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas. In November and December, the choir's regular involvement in high school Liturgies became very significant. They sang the music of African-American composer David Hurd for All Saints Day Mass with Archbishop Vigneron; they then helped the school community to know the new translation of the Roman Missal in an artful setting by legendary Catholic composer Richard Proulx. December also brought an exciting Christmas concert with the DCHS Bands, including beautiful carols from England and a medley of Irving Berlin's best. January and February were busy months for soloists from the program as they prepared for performance at the elegant Monsignors Weier and Kucyk Scholarship Recital and vocal coaching at the rewarding Solo and Ensemble Festival. During March, students from Varsity Chorus and Show Choir attended the MSVMA (Michigan School Vocal Music Association) District Choral Festival for the first time in our school's history. They also paid homage to the local community by singing a gorgeous anthem from Detroit composer Gordon Young. The end of March saw the fruits of their labors as many choir members presented Annie Get Your Gun. In April, they welcomed Mr. Robert Sabourin of Midland, MI for an intensive afternoon clinic. Mr. Sabourin, a master choral director with over 30 years of experience in school, church, and community choirs, gave them incredibly handy tools for their future work, and the singers caught his infectious enthusiasm for the choral art. In May, the singers once again joined forces in Divine Child Church for a concert shared with the high school Brass Quintet; together, choirs and brass presented music of many lands and time periods. Several students in the class of 2012 were recognized for their achievements: Louise Sawaya received the National School Choral Award, Ebere Oparaeke '12 received the Fred Waring Director's Award for Chorus, and Madeleine Rich '12 received the Certificate of Achievement in Choir. The end of May and the beginning of June were marked by traditional events: May Crowning, Commencement, and the Dearborn Heights Spirit Festival. I would like to congratulate all of our choral students for their tremendous effort and dedication this year, and give thanks for the staff, clergy, administrators, and parents that give us incredible support and help our events to run smoothly. It is because of them that we continue, in the words of the Alma Mater, to “sing anew our song to you” and look forward to a bright future. Divine Child High School Helps Restore Rare Prairie at Shiawassee Refuge Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge protects 130 acres of an area locally known as Little Prairie. The sod of this prairie was first plowed in the early 1930s. The rich soil of this site produced row crops for the next 80 years. This is a similar pattern for the rest of the state's prairie. Currently, less than one percent of Michigan's original prairie remains. The refuge began restoring this site back to prairie in 2009. This restoration has taken big steps forward with the help of Divine Child High School. On May 10, 2012, 25 students and three teachers from Divine Child High School chose the refuge as a place to conduct their service day. Before the day was over 1,764 seedlings of prairie grasses and sedges were hand-planted at Little Prairie. The day was warm and sunny. This was the second time Divine Child conducted a service day at the refuge. In 2010, 56 students planted approximately 3,400 seedlings at Little Prairie. The area is visible from the refuge's Bishop Road Observation Platform. Thus, the students and faculty can come back over the years and view a rare prairie that they helped restore. Gold Star Lunch High School Chapel Receives Renovation Divine Child High School hosted the 6th annual Gold Star Luncheon on February 2, during Catholic Schools Week. A select group of 20 current Divine Child freshmen were asked to nominate the teacher who made the most impact on them as a student and a person in elementary or middle school. The teachers and their administrator were then invited to attend the event. A great big thank you to all who helped make our High School Chapel a beautiful place to pray. The event, coordinated by Mrs. Kristie Welte, 9th Grade Counselor, was a huge success. It is so important to remember what an impact one teacher can have on his or her students and to let them know they make a difference. We are looking forward to another great luncheon next year. Stephanie Elliott '03 adopts Gladys the abandoned beagle As Stephanie Elliott, 27, hugged Gladys, the recently abandoned beagle whose sad story touched the hearts of many, she vowed to provide her with a good home and lots of tender loving care. “This is truly a blessing and I'm extremely excited to have this opportunity,” said Elliott, the owner of another beagle by the name of Poochie. “I'm really looking forward to our new life together and the two of them are going to be playmates and have so many great times together.” Discovered in a sealed trash bag in an industrial area on Detroit's east side earlier this spring, the two-year-old beagle was given the name Gladys by Humane Society workers. DUNCAN MILLER '08: THE RISING STAR Though he's too modest to admit it, Engineering junior Duncan Miller is a rising star in the field of aerospace engineering. Miller, who said he was “bitten by the space bug at an early age,” has a résumé that any aerospace engineer would appreciate. In his three years at the University, Miller has interned for Lockheed Martin Space Systems, the NASA Langley Autonomous Vehicle Laboratory and earned a flawless 4.0 grade point average with 18 A-pluses. Oh, and did we mention he's one of the lead engineers for the Cubesat Investigating Atmospheric Density Response to Extreme Driving, a state of the art satellite, which will orbit around the Earth? Miller added that the CADRE project has been consuming most of his free time lately. He said the satellite project is one of the biggest student-led projects at the University. “CADRE will study the thermosphere in low earth orbit by sampling the ion winds. Ultimately, this will improve orbital tracking of objects to help minimize collisions in orbit,” he said. Though he downplays his level of importance to CADRE's success, Miller is the only undergraduate leader of the project - the rest of the team leaders are graduate students. This summer Miller will intern at SpaceX, a private aerospace company that develops space vehicles, and his long-term plans include attending graduate school for aerospace engineering. Gladys, a 2-year-old beagle found abandoned, is hugged by her new owner Stephanie Elliott, 27, of Livonia, Mich. in the dog park at the Michigan Humane Society in Detroit on Thursday, May 24, 2012. PATRICIA BECK/Detroit Free Press 'Wicked' cast member Casey Quinn '04 of Dearborn Q: What's your first memory of dance? A: They would have an intermission sign (at the studio's dance recitals), and they would make me go across the stage. I would say I was about 2. My mom would stand on the other side of the stage holding my pacifier. Q: How many auditions did you do before you got cast in a show? A: There were auditions every day. I took auditioning like it was my job. Even if I wasn't right for it, I'd try out for it. I went to Chicago auditions, I went to L.A. auditions and the New York auditions for "Wicked." I auditioned pretty much whenever there was any kind of audition going on. I auditioned for "Wicked" about 15 times before my part came up. Q: What's your advice for making it onto the stage for all those young dancers out there? A: If you want to do Broadway, definitely take voice lessons. That's the best thing for a dancer to know. My grandma taught me how to sing. I used to do song-and-dance solos. I'd sing and then tap. I was in the choir at school. My mom and my grandma have prepared me very well.
