Welcome to the 75th
Anniversary collection
Before the 1930s, the Fine Arts Center went by a different name. The former
home of Julie and Spencer Penrose was called the Broadmoor Art Academy. It
thrived from 1919 to 1935 and attracted many of the nation’s finest artists as
instructors and students.
The beautiful Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center building, designed by architect
John Gaw Meem, opened its doors on April 20, 1936.
The Fine Arts Center’s Permanent Collection displays works by American artists
Richard Diebenkorn, Georgia O’Keeffe, Walt Kuhn and John Singer Sargent as
well as a large collection of Hispanic and American Indian art.

Miss Elsie Palmer by John Singer Sargent
Maybe you have seen the statue of Elsie’s
father, General William Palmer, riding on
a horse in the middle of the street here
in Colorado Springs. General Palmer
was the founder of Colorado Springs in
1871. Elsie was living in England with her
mother and her sisters when this portrait
was painted in 1890.

Julia Fernandez-Pol was born in 1984. She
is one of the youngest artists to have work
in this museum’s collection. She created this
abstract painting after visiting a glacier off
the coast of Argentina. Some people look at
this painting and think that the large circle
represents the water cycle.

The Spirit and the Muse
by Louis Recchia
Ute Agency By Paul Pletka
The artist attached
objects to three wood
panels and then painted
over them with dabs
of oil paint to create a
“found art” piece. The
artist chose items that
inspired him because of
their shapes, sizes and
meaning. He challenges the viewer to see the objects in
a new way when they are artistically arranged together.

Glass is made from sand
and minerals found in the
earth. It is heated to over
2150 degrees in order for
the artist to work with it.
When it gets that hot, the
glass becomes soft and
can sometimes look like
hot chewing gum, weird
balloons or droopy worms.
How many glass
parts do you think
make up this
Chandelier?
How much do you
think it weighs?
