It never fails to amaze me what one person can do when they put their mind to it and Marisela Gonzalez proved that she is a force of nature. With a vision and plan in hand, she went in front of the Board of Governors and through hard work she proved that she can accomplish her goals. She has earned the appreciation, gratitude and respect of the membership. Marisela went above and beyond the call of duty to start and finish this project to the outmost satisfaction of our membership. Her efforts are an inspiration for all of us. I also want to point out CC Leeper, Genna Pendergras and James Stewart for their assistance and tireless efforts. CC and Genna assisted us with campaigning the membership for voluntary contributions, which the start of this project heavily depended on and they did not disappoint. James’ donation in using his influence and connections in obtaining the necessary permits for our project expedited this process and saved us time and money. They also assisted and supported Marisela throughout this project. Thank you all for your efforts. Many members contributed to making the new Tennis Center a reality so please take a moment to read these names listed below. The biggest challenge to our greens is simple: grass needs water. Andy, Mark, Phelps and the Board of Governors are doing all they can to supplement what we aren’t getting naturally. To break it down for you we have received our allotment of river water and that should last until September. We are looking into securing good clean water from other sources. The Club is also looking at the option of drilling more wells on the property. The golf course is the top priority for our management and short of doing a rain dance on the course we are doing everything we can to assure that the course gets through this drought as strong as possible. If you have any questions don’t forget Andy has an open door policy. More to come, Lee “L.J.” Shamaley In addition to those listed above, there were many more members who contributed their time towards the completion of this project. I recall when our young members had a car wash, which raised us over $800. There were also several parents present to help any possible way and encourage members to support our cause. We also received much needed financial assistance from vendors through in-kind donations. The cost of this project would certainly have been much higher if it was not for their contribution. I applaud you all for what you have done for our new tennis center. The successful completion of this project is due to the efforts of the entire membership. You all came together to improve this club and make our courts more than just a place to play tennis. Once again, you have proven that El Paso Country Club has the best membership of any club in town. Page 4 An El Paso Country Club Publication July 2012 July 2012 An El Paso Country Club Publication Page 5 It’s been hot, hot, hot! And I don’t just mean the temperature. Our members have been scorching the golf course with some amazing shots. Our first shot of the month came to us on the 7 th of June. Tanner Gore, joined by his fellow Coronado High School teammates Mason Sliva, Leo Gute and Thomas Gallardo, accomplished a great milestone in any golfer’s career. On the par three 12 th hole, Tanner hit his 6-iron from 200 yards, finding the bottom of the cup for his first Hole In One! A mere three days later, #12 was the sight of another first-time ace. This one was made by Jamie Ayerdi while she played with her husband, Evalt. She used her 5-hybrid from 135 yards away. Congratulations Tanner and Jamie! Our next shot of the month came to us from Bruce Meyer. While playing the 16th hole, Bruce managed to hole-out with a wedge from 135 yards for an eagle 2! His playing partners Mike McQueen, Gary Borsch and Doug Wright said they expected nothing less from the captain of the two time Civil War champion Dixie Rifles! The next day, David Candelaria scored an eagle 2 on the 6th hole using his wedge from 136 yards out. Ramsey Esper, Mike Miles, Saul Frank, Cliff Eisenberg and Ernie Koury were all there to witness the feat. They were happy for David, even if it meant they lost the press bet on that hole. Later that morning, Roy Gray made his first eagle since joining the club earlier this year. He has played 4-5 days a week trying to accomplish this. His came on the 13th hole where he holed out from 60 yards with a sand wedge. This shot helped him and his teammates Roger Surbaugh and Joe Fridel win the team bet with his regular playing group. Congratulations Bruce, David and Roy. The river water supply should get us into September. The winds have been brutal this year but the golf course is coming around and starting to fill in very well. We are aerating fairway areas at this time and also seeding and sodding thin spots, so as we go through these areas we will mark them out as “ground under repair” until they heal in. We are trying several different seeded Bermudas on the property in order to see if one variety is better for us and our conditions. The rye grass around the greens and on the tees is transitioning out and dying. We will be going through these areas and scalping them down to let the Bermuda grow out. We have noticed sand bottle usage has slowed down so please encourage your fellow members to keep filling in divots. I believe this will help our heal time and provide a better surface in the fairways. Also we need to keep reminding everybody to please fix the ball marks on the greens. This is great golfing weather and the course is beautiful! See you on the green. Page 8 An El Paso Country Club Publication July 2012 Dana Pelletier and Jackson Norwich both won their flights in the Sun Country Junior PGA Tournament hosted by El Paso Country Club this last week. Jackson shot a 44 on the front 9 to win the Boys 9-10 division, and Dana shot 78 (her first round to break 80) on her way to winning the Girls 15-16 Division. Kevin Coleman shot a 74 to finish second in the Boys 15-16 division. Congratulations to Dana, Jackson and Kevin. July 2012 An El Paso Country Club Publication Page 9 The women's Sun City Championship is July 11 th and 13th. The entry fee is $100, which includes 2 days of tournament play, a practice round and cart. The entry deadline is July 8 th. It is flighted by handicaps so everyone can play and have a great time. Hope to see you there. It is always a pleasure to play with Donna Zitur, who is an example to all of us. Donna joined El Paso Country Club with her husband Raymond in 1981. She has been walking 18 holes ever since. We so enjoy and admire her. We also welcome Barbara Upsal to our group. If you putt and your ball hits the flagstick when it is in the hole, in match play you lose the hole. In stroke play, you must add two (2) penalty strokes to your score for the hole. Page 10 An El Paso Country Club Publication July 2012 LUIS AND SEBASTIAN MARTINEZ LARRY & MARILYN FRANCIS LINDA & ARMANDO MEDRANO Fresh from the sea, the kitchen staff at El Paso Country Club presented members with a delicious meal of lobster, clams and steak to feast upon. This unique opportunity only comes a few times a year so members know when to take advantage. Lobster & Clambake night is always a favorite at the club and the month of June was no different. Young and old alike enjoyed the fresh seafood and the camaraderie to be had on Friday, June 8, 2012. HARRIET & MARVIN ROTH AND GLORIA & ART AUGUST July 2012 MONIQUE, ROSE & GILBERT MALOOLY JR. Not only do children enjoy the activities planned CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF TEAM for them daily, they also learn all the do’s and don’ts of the game of golf. They make friends that they will know for most of their childhood or longer. They get to spend a part of their summer having fun and learning a new sport instead of just sitting at home. The great thing about golf camp in my opinion is that it can benefit you when you get older if you decide to take the sport seriously. My brother and I never particularly wanted to play golf when we were younger. In fact, we got caught up in all different sports as we grew up, but we still went to golf camp every summer. Eventually, my brother and I grew to enjoy the sport and because we participated in golf camp when we were younger, we had an understanding of the game before we took it seriously. This became beneficial when the other kids who didn’t attend golf camp wanted to join the sport and had to learn all the nuances my brother and I already knew. We had a greater understanding of the game before everyone else and it seemed like we had a head start in a race. Of course children don’t think about their future like that, which is why this camp is so great. As a kid all you think you are doing at camp is having fun, but in reality you are also learning athletic skills and learning those first step things that could lead you to greatness in this sport. July 2012 An El Paso Country Club Publication Page 15 Well what can I say, that a bunch of pictures can’t say better? It’s been super busy, the swim team is the biggest we’ve ever had, lap swimmers keep churning out the miles, and the heat...need I say more. The Barracudas Swim Team is doing great this season. After four meets the team is 4-0, oh yeah! We are undefeated. Going into July the team is in good shape to be highly competitive at the city championships July 21-22 at Pavo Real Pool. Remember the pool will close at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10 for our meet against EP Tennis Club, but you can still hang around to cheer us on! Page 16 An El Paso Country Club Publication July 2012 The newest summer camp at El Paso Country Club, Young Rembrandts, aims at helping young members learn to appreciate the life lessons art has to offer. From the wild animals of Africa to the simple beauty of common foods, children used their hands to take them to a new world while also creating decorative pieces for their parents to showcase. The camp will have its second session in July, and the children will discover the art of the masters such as Van Gogh and Monet. The camp is limited, so call 915-234-2248 for more information. We are now asking everyone to sign in prior to entering the facilities. I understand this may be an inconvenience to some of you but we are trying to monitor guest and non-member usage of our facilities. As the staff members at the front desk become more and more familiar with members, they’ll be able to sign you in and make things a little easier. We are also going to sell a few more food items and you’ll soon have the opportunity to choose from a wider variety of drinks and snacks. I’m very confident all the changes are for the best and will improve your overall experience at the club. Please work with us through the transition and please remember to keep using our court reservation system whenever you need a court. We are planning an open house/official grand opening celebration for the clubhouse on the weekend before school starts (Aug 24-26) that will include a doubles only tournament. The event will include many types of doubles pairing combinations such as mother/ daughter, father/son, etc…more information will be available soon!!! June was a very busy month for our junior players. Besides the Braden Aboud Tournament held at EPCC, our juniors participated in three other tournaments around the Southwest. Congratulations to Gustavo Cardenas, Dylan Parsley and Anastasiya Joyner for their wins. Summer Camp Session 2 in August is filling up fast. Please sign your kids up before we run out of available spots. Adult leagues came to and end for the spring season. As it has become the norm, our teams fared well in the competition. This time around I can’t report any of the teams coming out on top but I can’t say enough about the dedication and effort many of our members and coaches put into making our teams highly competitive every season. Overall, adult teams at EPCC have consistently finished high up on the standings every season for the past 4 years. Congratulations to our 4.0 women’s team as they finished higher than any other team this season. BRADEN ABOUD The Braden Aboud Jr. Tournament has become a must play tournament in the calendar year and 2012 wasn’t an exception. We had almost 200 entries this year and the event was a huge success once again. The tournament is hosted by EPCC in collaboration with the Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation. Their participation and the many wonderful things the organization stands for is what makes this such a special event. The memory of Braden remains extremely close to many members of El Paso Country Club and some of the tennis staff. This year, the foundation and its many donors, provided t-shirts, goodie bags, drinks, lunches and a dinner for all participants. I want to thank the many people that help host this great event. As for the competition itself, many of our juniors came out on top. Congratulations to the following players for winning their respective events: Alvaro Hobbs, Ethan Katz, Anastasiya Joyner, Nicholas Spurbeck, Alex Spurbeck, Daniel Spurbeck, Nicole Gonzalez, and Sebastian Herrera. Page 18 An El Paso Country Club Publication July 2012 SOUTHWEST YOUTH FOUNDATION FOR TENNIS For the last few weeks, El Paso Country Club has been hosting a tennis program started by two of our enthusiastic, civic-minded junior players, Ethan Katz and Adin Ehrlich. Ethan and Adin started a charitable organization called SWYFT (Southwest Youth Foundation for Tennis) to introduce tennis to kids in El Paso who otherwise would not have the opportunity. SWYFT selected 20 El Paso youth who will learn the fundamentals of tennis from our great coaches, Alex, Nicole, Erika and Patrick and with assistance from advanced junior players including Ethan and Adin. After 4 weeks of initial training, SWYFT will provide 2 well-deserving students with a one year scholarship to continue in the tennis program at El Paso Country Club. Ethan and Adin raised over $5,000 to create this program and hope to continue this for years to come. The money they raised was used to buy the 20 students new racquets, tennis shoes, SWYFT program t-shirts and hats and to pay for eight instructional classes this summer and the 2 scholarships for a year. Those interested in donating to the Southwest Youth Foundation for Tennis, should contact: Southwest Youth Foundation for Tennis, c/o Ruth Katz, 721 Yorkshire Court, El Paso, Texas 79922.
