the return of a familiar face adding some much needed hope

owes its existence to the land of literature. Be they comic books, pulp novels or deep tomes, they give us
worlds that are rich with great characters and stories. Here are a handful that are out this month...

It’s not every day that we get to see
a Finnish action/adventure flick,
let alone one that stars Samuel L
Jackson! Based on the young adult
novel by Dan Smith, this tale of a
young Finnish hunter rescuing the
President of the United States is a
classic family adventure that really is
a rollicking watch.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
We often wonder whether years ago,
when Marvel visionary Stan Lee first
created characters like the Hulk,
Iron-Man and Thor, he envisaged
them ripping movie screens apart.
We reckon Avengers: Age of Ultron,
written and directed by Buffy god
Joss Whedon, would have Stan as
impressed as we are.
The Walking Dead: The
Complete Fifth Season
Surely one of the most successful
comic book to TV adaptations,
especially in recent years, the walking
dead of The Walking Dead may well
be slow, but they’re as captivating
as ever. Well, the efforts that Rick
Grimes and his motley posse have to
go to in order to survive certainly are!
Gotham: The Complete
First Season
It may be Gotham City, but forget
na-na-na-na Batman, for there’s
no-no-no-no Batman here! Instead
we get the origin story of the Bat
and many of his adversaries, but
as an aside to discovering what Jim
Gordon went through as a GCPD cop
before eventually becoming police
commissioner.
The Flash: The Complete
First Season
WOOSH! What was that? FWOOSH!
What WAS that?! It’s not “what” but
“who”. It’s Arrow’s mate The Flash,
and he is a speedy chap. Now that
he’s all super and stuff, the crime
scene investigator who makes
Usain Bolt look like a grandad vows
to protect Central City from superpowered ne’er-do-wells.

2008’s intense Tom Rob Smith
thriller novel hits our screens with
all the force that it deserves. It
revolves around a former agent of
Russia’s MGB named Leo Demidov,
who is investigating a series of
utterly gruesome child murders
committed by one Andrei Chikatilo.
This is one truly chilling watch.

When George Miller was revving up for another Mad Max movie, he
assumed that Mel Gibson would be back driving the Interceptor. But 12
years later somebody else is wearing Max’s leathers. We speak with new
Max Tom Hardy, writer/director Miller and co-star Charlize Theron about
rebooting an action classic in Mad Max: Fury Road... WORDS: BROOKE CAMPBELL
George, why did you decide to bring Mad
Max back?
George Miller: It’s been on my mind since
the last millennium, 1999, when the idea
first came. I’d already made three Mad
Max movies, so I didn’t really want to do
another one. I had other things I wanted to
do, but the idea came, I kept on pushing
it away, it came back and grew and grew
and I found myself saying, ‘I think we’ll be
making another Mad Max movie.’ I just
didn’t realise it would take more than 12
years!
Mel Gibson was originally going to come
back as Max, but because the movie
took so long to get going you had no
choice but to recast. Is that correct?
GM: This movie took so long to get going
that by the time the planets finally all
aligned, Mel had hit a lot of turbulence in
his life. It also was never meant to be a
story about an older warrior. It’s not like
the movie Unforgiven or something like
that. So it was time for there to be a new
Mad Max, just like there have been several
James Bonds over the period. When Tom
walked into the room he felt so much like
the character to me.
Tom, how did you feel playing a role made
famous by another actor?
Tom Hardy: Like any actor, you get
really excited when you land a part.
Then I realised that the role of Max is
synonymous with Mel Gibson – there’s
a large group of people who love Mel as
Max, and if it’s not Mel, it’s not Max. I
was a bit crestfallen, for a second. But
what I really understood from further
conversations with George was that there
was no need to step in, or replace, or
try to do better, or try to bring something
new. Ultimately, George and Mel went on a
journey for three movies, then the legacy
continued to develop, at which point it was
time for me to switch in.
6 September 2015 Charlize, this is quite a different role for
you. Did you enjoy it?
Charlize Theron: It was incredible to play
in George’s sandbox, literally, and be a
woman, to try to celebrate women and be
surrounded by women in a real story.
GM: That character was always a woman,
too. She was in the original storyboards.
She had to be a woman. There was a
backstory. If you saw her, you knew she’d
gone through a lot.
There’s a feminist agenda...
GM: Initially, there was never a feminist
agenda – it was just the story. There was
simply going to be an extended chase,
and the things being chased were going to
be not an object but human beings – the
five wives. The story needed a warrior,
but it couldn’t be a man, because a man
taking five wives from another man is an
entirely different story. So then we created
Furiosa, and everything grew out of that.
Meanwhile, Max is like a wild dog, a wild
animal trying to find freedom, and from
there it was just a question of finding a
way to put the two together.
Where does this fit in terms of the other
movies? Is it part four?
GM: The films have no strict chronology.
It’s like an episode in Mad Max’s life. I
never ever wrote any of the scripts with a
chronological order.
Did you ever consider having Mel Gibson
do a cameo in the movie?
GM: The rumour went around that Mel
might do a cameo, but we were trying
really hard to make this world authentic
and for the audience to be caught up in
the experience of the screen and it didn’t
make sense to suddenly have Mel appear,
it would just pull the audience out. It would
be like seeing Sean Connery appear in a
Daniel Craig Bond film.

the War Boys, taking Max captive in
the name of the tyrannical Immortan

the run again, after Joe’s lieutenant
Furiosa (Charlize Theron, The Road)
heads off on a fuel run – complete
with five of the despot’s wives - and

Max teams with the inspirational
Furiosa, aiming to help bring the five
wives to freedom. It’s the beginning
of a 90-plus minute acrobatic action
rampage that’s not only a completely
joyous assault on the senses, but
also possibly the greatest action
sequence ever committed to film.
Yes, it’s that good. It’s relentless, it’s
astounding, and it makes time pass
fleetingly. Who says we don’t need
another hero? Mad Max: Fury Road
isn’t just another Mad Max flick, it’s
a triumphant kick up the bottom

Joss, when did you decide that Ultron
should be the villain of the movie?
Joss Whedon: I decided that we should
have Ultron in the second movie before
I decided to make the first! He’s big,
he’s powerful, he’s angry, he’s metal,
he’s strong enough to take these guys
on and he’s been angry for so long that
I think he might be a little unhinged,
and I can write that!
In addition to having Ultron in this
instalment, what else can we expect
from the movie?
Robert Downey Jr: Jeremy Renner’s
Hawkeye has a heck of an arc this
time, and also I think I can say from us
who have gone before, the arc of what
happens to Paul Bettany’s character
The Vision, as well as Quicksilver and
Scarlet Witch, are interesting. I feel that
in many ways they’re the big triumph of
the film.
Mark Ruffalo: Agreed, Hawkeye’s
storyline is great, and I could relate to
it – being an actor who’s often away
from home fighting imaginary evil guys
and with a wife who’s at home saying
‘Where the hell are you? Why aren’t you
here?’ I’m very sympathetic to that.
Chris Evans: I really like Scarlett
Johansson and Mark Ruffalo’s evolving
connection in the film. There are
some nice intimate moments in this
challenged relationship between a
team of superheroes where you don’t
normally get to see romance, especially
within the group.
8 September 2015 Paul Bettany: The Hawkeye arc is for me
the heart of the movie. I found it really
moving and Jeremy is fantastic.
wait – and also all of the letters...
Elizabeth Olsen: The first time we watch
Black Widow talk down The Hulk I think is
such a beautiful moment in the entire film.
I’ve seen that twice now and it’s one of my
favourite moments.
SJ: Yeah, the cover letters before the
script.
Before you start filming the Avengers
movies, what’s the thing that you get the
most excited about?
EO: Cooking and eating!
Jeremy Renner: Hanging out with these
degenerates!
MR: Coming back to the world and seeing
where these crazy people we’re playing are
headed, and knowing that Joss is going to
take us there, into his own twisted psyche.
RDJ: Probably my first costume fitting, me
surrounded by many full-length mirrors!
CE: I’ll say a similar response to Jeremy,
Marvel does a great job of bringing a lot of
the same people together, not just in front
of the camera but behind the camera. So
coming back together as a group, it feels
like a family, it’s a lot of familiar faces, it’s
like a high school reunion or something.
EO: I didn’t understand the question.
CE: Yeah as soon as you said ‘cooking’ I
thought, ‘She doesn’t get it. She misheard
the question.’
Scarlett Johansson: Watching Elizabeth
eat. Because no one else does! I get
most excited about reading Joss’ script,
because it’s the big payoff after a long
RDJ: The cover letters for the scripts. Joss
writes them...
RDJ: They’re as good as the movie.
SJ: They’re so delightful, and selfdeprecating.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: I’m just so excited
to be part of it, you know? That Joss
brought me along on this fantastic journey
and to this fantastic group of actors.
PB: Box office bonuses!
RDJ: Wait, are they coming before the
movie starts shooting now?
MR: You guys got box office bonuses?!
Here’s a question for the girls. How
empowering does it feel to play two
female superheroes in such a maledominated universe?
SJ: Yeah, I just skip through the script
and go, ‘Oh, Black Widow, there she is,
and there she is again.’ Those are the
only parts I read! But no, what’s great
about playing this character is that
she’s based in something deep, and
something that I could hold onto – she’s
grounded in something very real. I think
she’s experienced a lot of trauma, and
she’s never really been able to make
active choices for herself and now she
finally is, and now she’s ready for it – and
unfortunately it’s just kind of bad timing.
But these kinds of things are something
we can all hold onto, so that when we’re

In the comics, Ultron was created by Dr Hank
Pym, aka the original Ant-Man. In this movie
Ultron is a dormant project that was developed
by Tony Stark. We’ll have to wait just a little
longer to catch up with Pym’s story when the
movie Ant-Man hits home...

fighting the good fight and shooting
five eighths of a page over two weeks
it keeps us involved and keeps our
heads straight. So I’m looking at it
just from an actor looking for material
that’s something substantial. Not just
a female actor looking for substantial
work. Thanks Joss!
EO: I’m just still thrilled to be part
of this whole group and world. It’s a
franchise I’ve been watching since the
first Iron Man and I think they make
such great films with such a balance
of depth and humour and action,
and they’re all humans that have
weaknesses and strengths. Especially
in this film I think there’s a special
highlight on everyone’s own personal
worlds and lives and what makes them
human. So I think that’s what makes
this film so great.
Joss, this movie was expected to be
a billion dollar hit before it had even
wrapped. That must put you under a
lot of pressure?
JW: If I had a key on my computer
that said ‘billion dollars’ I would press
it. I don’t really think about those
things. The restrictions are sometimes
frustrating and sometimes very useful,
because the page is not so blank.
The thing I loved about Marvel Comics
is the thing I love about what Marvel
Studios president Kevin Feige is doing
with the Marvel Universe, which is
that he approaches every movie as
a completely new idea, as a movie of
some particular genre which happens
to have a superhero in it. He’s not
interested in creating a formula, he’s
interested in creating a universe.

JW: I don’t think I’ll ever get that
far away from the Marvel Universe
because I love it so much. After
my long rest, I plan a longer rest
and possibly an eternal rest. I
have no immediate plans which, is
the best thing I’ve ever said!
The world’s most famous superhero
team return in this exuberant,
eye-popping and explosive sequel
to 2012’s massive hit which saw
Marvel’s biggest heroes band together
to fight an otherworldly foe. This time,
Iron Man, Captain America, Black
Widow and the rest of the squad
are joined by a few new faces as
they fight to protect the world from
a merciless robot known as Ultron.
While aiding the rest of the Avengers

the intelligence is too smart for its own
good, and takes command of thousands
of robotic bodies, threatening to wipe
out humanity in the name of global

Ultron’s apocalyptic plans, the Avengers
must band together to fight what might
be an unwinnable battle against their
most powerful foe yet. Meanwhile, two
new superpowered humans appear,
each displaying frightening abilities –
but whose side are they truly on? A
satisfying sequel that remains actionpacked from start to finish, Avengers:
Age of Ultron is a must-see for any
superhero aficionado, and is a wonderful
crowning jewel for Marvel’s second phase

smash Entourage, which
is all about the life and
career of Vincent ‘Vinnie’
Chase. But did you know
that the character was
inspired by one of today’s
most popular actors?

“It started out to be about Mark, as in
let’s find who the next Mark Wahlberg is,”
creator/writer/director Doug Ellin says.
“When Adrian Grenier was cast it went in
a different direction. They’re very different
types of guys and very different types of
actors.”
Doug tells us that Wahlberg’s real life
entourage were also quite different to the
guys in Vincent Chase’s troupe.

In Entourage the movie, Vinnie is directing
his first flick, ‘E’ has a complicated love
life, a newly ‘skinny’ Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is
crushing on UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, and
Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) looks set for a
comeback.
“This is really just a formalised version of
several episodes of the TV show back-toback,” says Grenier. “Come watch it with
your friends – and you don’t have to skip to
the next episode because it’s just one long
exciting adventure! Still, it does stand alone.
The story, and the transformations of the
characters, is what you’d want any movie to
be. But it just happens to be in the world
that these guys have lived in throughout the
show. All necessary information is provided.
It’s like the beginning of every movie, you’ve
got to learn who these characters are and
then you get into the meat of the story.”
Grenier, 38, has been identified with the
Vincent Chase role for most of his career.
But life doesn’t always emulate art, he says.
“People always ask me how accurate it
is. It’s really hard to say, because it’s both
accurate and also fantastical. In many ways,
it borrows from reality. It reflects reality. But
then it also helps to create the culture. I
mean, I can’t tell you how many people have
come up to me to say, ‘I’m in Los Angeles,
I’m in Hollywood, because of your show!’ I
mean, you’ve got to remember that this is
fantasy. It’s wish fulfilment. Nobody can live
without consequences.”

You may not have heard of director Jonathan Kasdan, but you’ve
probably seen the work of his talented father Lawrence (currently

intelligent teen coming-of-age story. Back in the 1980s when
these were popular, quite a few of them won people over with their
emphasis on emotion and character – Pretty in Pink, for example, and
Cameron Crowe’s wonderful Say Anything.... That latter film is actually
namechecked in this story of high school student Dave (Dylan O’Brien,
TV’s Teen Wolf), who’s obsessed with the archetypal ‘Girl He Cannot
Have’, Jane (Victoria Justice, TV’s Victorious). Then he meets Aubrey
(Britt Robertson, The Longest Ride) and discovers love rather than
obsession... The First Time is made in the spirit of the great teen

Ah, that Simon Pegg, he’s such a nice man! Well, that’s what we
thought until we saw him playing against type in this dark action/
thriller that was shot in Western Australia. Pegg is hitman Charlie
Wolfe. He’s been hired to kill a bar proprietor’s wife, but he’s not the
only one who’s out to get her. Basically he’s involved in a bizarre death
triangle, with plans of murder, blackmail and revenge all playing out
around him... With a compact, mostly Aussie cast – complete with
requisite Hemsworth brother in Luke and Bryan Brown playing nasty
- director Kriv Stenders has seemingly been inspired by the works of
Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. While it really is an engaging romp, just
know that Kill Me Three Times definitely isn’t family friendly like his

Upon arrival via helicopter at the remote estate, Caleb soon learns that he’s been summoned for a reason. Nathan has

an even more unique secret... It’s difficult to categorise Spring.
It has a spot of horror, a decent dash of sci-fi, some humour and
a whole lot of romance. Like Louise’s secret, it’s quite unique,
although it often reminded us of Richard Linklater’s wonderful

When watching Breaking Bad, did you ever want to know more about Walter White’s rather shonky lawyer Saul Goodman?
We did, and we obviously weren’t alone as here he gets a whole series to himself from Breaking Bad creator Vince
Gilligan. It’s a prequel, going back to 2002 when Saul Goodman was known by his real name of James ‘Jimmy’ McGill. It
doesn’t come as any great surprise to learn that he’s a scam artist, who completes a second rate law degree in hopes
of following in his successful brother’s footsteps. That brother, Charles ‘Chuck’ McGill (Michael McKean, the legendary
This Is Spinal Tap), has now become a veritable recluse, due to a sensitivity to anything electronic. Jimmy works from a
tiny room behind a nail salon while looking after his brother, however he doesn’t intend to stay there forever... Featuring
another familiar Breaking Bad face in Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks, also seen recently in Community), Better Call
Saul is mostly a mix of crime and drama, but it also has its wonderfully funny moments. If you were a fan of Breaking Bad

this horrific event, and we find Jax in jail. Not knowing the identity of Tara’s killer, he makes alliances and deals in an
effort to find out who did the deed in order to exact vengeance, with much of this based on intelligence from his mother.

having their each and every move tracked by the government via
a secret machine, and a group of people prepared to fight for
what they believe is right, saving many lives in the process. With
Samaritan – an alternate spying system - now online, things have
been quiet as our team have laid low. But new numbers start
coming in needing attention, so there’s everything from puzzling
maths students to rigged elections to get involved with. Amy
Who would have thought that The Good Wife would recover
so quickly and so easily from losing one of its most popular
characters? Yes, we still very much feel Will Gardner’s presence,
but the character’s sad exit at the end of the previous season
does quickly move to the back of your mind when this season’s
dramatic episodes kick in. We begin with Alicia deciding not to
run for State’s Attorney, despite Eli’s consistent encouragement to
throw her hat into the ring. Later, she’ll change her mind, and end
up going head-to-head with Frank Prady (David Hyde Pierce, Frasier).
But her chances of winning lessen when Peter gives an interview
that could influence voter turnout on election day. Make sure to

a different slant on Batman lore by occurring before the Dark Knight became Gotham City’s protector, this isn’t just
the story of James Gordon’s rise through the police ranks, as Gotham also reveals the origin stories of many a familiar
villain. Those who will go on to become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler and many more are all introduced, and it
adds a level of fascination on top of the story of what drove a once innocent kid to become the winged guardian of an

storm, Barry finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is struck by lightning. Waking up nine months
later, he quickly learns that he’s been granted the ability to move at superhuman speeds, and that he isn’t the only
person who was transformed into a ‘metahuman’ at the hands of the freak storm. Barry swears to use his newfound
abilities for good, setting out to fight crime and finally solve the mystery of his mother’s death... The Flash is a great
addition to the existing crop of superhero action series, and sports a lighter tone that makes it great for newbies to

have. Meanwhile, his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) continues to search for his missing brother, oblivious to his new
demonic state. It isn’t long before Sam finds out what’s happened to Dean and treks off to Beulah, North Dakota to
bring him back – so to speak... Some of this season’s best moments feature Revenge of the Nerds favourite Curtis

Based on the first adult novel of the same name by teen author Melissa de la Cruz, the TV adaptation of Witches of
East End focuses on the Beauchamps, a family of witches living in Long Island trying to be the best witches they can be
in the face of opposition. It’s proved to be a hit, not least thanks to its stellar cast. Led by Julia Ormond (First Knight)
and Mädchen Amick (Shelly from Twin Peaks), the first season followed the events of the novel reasonably closely. This
longer 13-episode second season starts to venture into “loosely based on” territory, and is arguably even more fun to
watch because of that. This second season’s been confirmed to be the final for the series, so you can wrap up the story

her second year. Meanwhile, Caroline, unable to move on, is determined to lift the Travelers’ anti-magic spell on Mystic
Falls. It isn’t long before we learn Damon and Bonnie’s location, with Caroline and Enzo soon embarking on a mission
to rescue them... There are a few new faces this season, including a militia leader and a tough doctor at the university
hospital, but of course it’s Damon, Stefan and Elena who we’re all here to see! Clint

remains, a recluse by the name of Mr Norrell whose shows are thrilling audiences right around the country. More so,
the man has raised a woman from the dead and sent an army of ghost ships after Napoleon. He’s brilliant! Another
magician then rears his head, the cautious and unfussy Jonathan Strange. He’s the opposite of Norrell. Ultimately, a
war is waged between the two magicians that outshines the one that’s taking place between England and France. Funny,
moving, enthralling and scary, this one is a ripper! Clint

When Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men, came up with a
sitcom riffing on socially awkward scientists and their geeky interests,
some people were sceptical. But it’s now been going strong for
almost a decade, even spawning its own LEGO set! Its success has
largely been thanks to some very clever writing (Lorre also created
the wonderful Dharma & Greg) and a pitch-perfect cast. At the end of
the seventh season, the years-long relationship between Leonard and
Penny finally resulted in a marriage proposal, and this eighth season
– which was delayed while the cast negotiated for more money - gets
24 episodes to play around with what happens next. As always,
there are lots of in-jokes for geeks everywhere, and plenty of laughs
for everyone else. The Big Bang Theory is guaranteed good mood

New series The Night Shift focuses on the busy staffers of a San
Antonio hospital who work the late shift in the emergency room. As
opposed to ER, Grey’s Anatomy or any other recent doctor series,
this one’s got a really unique setting. It’s Texas, so there’s not only
a rather distinct world outside of the automatic doors that greet
hospital visitors, but the patients that come in aren’t the type that
you’d usually see stumble into Seattle Grace or Chicago Hope. Much
like many of the doctors on hand (who were previously stationed in
Afghanistan), many of the patients that come in are returnees from
war. Interestingly, it’s the psychological scars of war, rather than the
physical, that the docs seem to be mostly treating... Boasting a great
cast, The Night Watch is captivating right out of the gate. Kirby

detectives who are as funny as they are good at their jobs. They’re
led by Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg, Saturday Night Live), an immature
but amazingly effective detective, who’s aided and abetted by the
likes of Amy (Melissa Fumero, One Life to Live), Terry (Terry Crews,
Everybody Hates Chris) and Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio, Reno 911!). This
season sees the squad take on everything from mafia and drug lord
types to Halloween pranks and teaming up with postal workers...
If you haven’t been nabbed by Brooklyn Nine-Nine yet, do so. You’ll

they’d headed out here to Australia to try to discover Phil’s

chaos. This sixth season opens with Cam and Mitchell on
their honeymoon and reluctant to head back to their normal
lives amongst the rest of their extended family. Naturally the
producers, in conjuring up another 24 episodes of engaging
relationship turmoil, have something to say about that! After six
seasons Modern Family is still going strong, and fans will happily
slot right back into the characters’ lives for this further slice of

to being a criminal – for a good reason - and we find out more

Yellowbird is a tiny feathered fellow who has lost his family
and dearly wishes to feel like he belongs. When his friend
Ladybug helps inspire him to see the world, he ventures out
and meets a flock of birds. Darius, their leader, is wounded
and Yellowbird is asked to give instructions to a bird
named Karl regarding the flock’s winter migration to Africa.
Desperate to see the world, Yellowbird instead steps in to
lead the migration, even though he doesn’t really know the
first thing about what’s required or even which direction that
they have to head in! So, he and the flock fly off on a whole
bunch of fun, funny and fabulous adventures the world over
as they try to find their way to Africa. Amy

Poor Shaun the Sheep is having a really baaaa-d day! It wasn’t

exactly the same, so he hatched a plan for a day off. But when he
accidentally sends the sleeping farmer hurtling towards the big
city in a caravan, action has to be taken. Faithful dog Bitzer takes
control, but when arriving in the city finds that the farmer has lost his
memory and become a hairdresser! Being sheep, Shaun and friends
follow Bitzer, hoping that they can save their beloved farmer – they
even disguise themselves as people! From the same clever people
who made the Wallace & Gromit movies and Chicken Run, Shaun the
Sheep Movie is the best movie ever about sheep, baa none! Amy

for the evil showman Dr Hysteria and his enchanting assistant
Lilith are up to something – they’ve got a haunted cabinet
backstage that has the souls of lost teens in it! It’s up to local
girl Beth and her friends to stop the madness... Katherine
McNamara from The Maze Runner and Ryan McCarten from
Liv and Maddie star in this wildly entertaining treat for the

- and now here’s an awesome adventure tale involving three worlds

Joaquin, have grown up with their friend Maria. As they get older
competition starts between the boys to win Maria’s love. Seeing this,
La Muerte, who is the ruler of the Land of the Remembered, has a
bet with Xibalba, the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, as to who
will marry Maria... The Book of Life is one of the funkiest animated
movies that we’ve seen in a long time. It looks great, has some fab
music and most of all it’s a brilliant story of following your heart
