Situated 60km northeast of Cape Town, the seat of the City of Drakenstein will provide logistical and financial support for the five-day tour, taking place from February 29 to March 4. De Villiers said the town is surrounded by some of the most famous mountain passes in the country, which made it ideally suited to some world-class road racing. The 515km tour – comprising an individual time-trial and four road stages – will once again culminate at one of Paarl’s most famous landmarks, the Afrikaanse Taalmonument. According to race organiser Wynand De Villiers of ASG Events, the tour is supported by Cape Winelands Cycling and sanctioned by Cycling South Africa and the parties are united in working to obtain UCI accreditation. “There are a number of iconic climbs on the route, including Du Toitskloof Pass and the well-known Four Passes Route, which goes over the Helshoogte, Sir Lowry’s, Viljoen’s and Franschhoek passes.” “I’m not ordinarily a proponent of the clover-leaf racing format but Paarl unequivocally provides the exception to the rule with so many great venues, routes and passes.”. De Villiers said. “As the only sanctioned racing tour in the week leading up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, it’s ideal preparation and a fantastic way to see the wine country.” 4| Cyclingnews Event Outline In addition, the central race village makes logistical arrangements easier and considerably reduces costs for participating riders. The host venue will be the historic La Paris Estate, midway between Paarl and Franschhoek, which dates back to 1699 and lends a distinctly old-world charm to the European-style cycling event. “The Grand Hall is capable of hosting a thousand guests in a sublime setting, so the daily post-ride lunches are going to be marvelous.” While the country’s major pro teams will be in action, organisers are also inviting open and seeded amateurs to enter individually or as part of a team. “Entries are coming in quite fast now and we will unfortunately have to limit the field to a thousand riders across the various categories,” said De Villiers. RIDER DEMOGRAPHICS: The breakdown of the 500 riders that took part in the 2015 Tour is as follows: Western Cape: 45 Other Provinces in South Africa: 303 Overseas entries: 152 The Tour of Good Hope forms part of the Bestmed National Cycling Series, which offers a ranking and seeding system for South African cyclists. Cyclingnews Event Outline |5 BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE 2016 Tour of Good Hope THE 2016 ROUTE The 2016 Bestmed Tour of Good Hope is presented in the week leading up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour from 29 February to 4 March 2016 and will be based in the Paarl/Franschhoek valley. Encompassing five days of clover leaf racing from this wonderful location in the Cape Winelands, the tour covers a total distance of 515km and 6 168m vertical ascent. NEW CLOVER LEAF FORMAT The 2016 Tour will be based at the spectacular La Paris Estate midway between Paarl and Franschhoek on the R301. La Paris will host registration and the launch function on 28 February as well as daily lunches for riders, which is included in the entry package. Riders will receive lunch after every stage with the exception of the final stage which finishes at the Taal Monument. Paarl is surrounded by some of the most famous passes in the country and lends itself perfectly to a clover leaf racing format. We believe this format (central race village hub) will significantly reduce the logistics and ‘own costs’ of participants related to traveling and accommodation while incorporating some of the best and most famous cycling routes and mountain passes in the Western Cape. We are trying to minimise rider costs and logistical difficulties around the tour as much as possible. These changes will decrease the hassle factor considerably. 6| Cyclingnews Event Outline STAGE 3 STAGE 1 The Famous 4 Passes route (125km, 1 840m ascent). Start and finish at La Paris Estate in Paarl. The stage heads out over Helshoogte to Somerset West before riders will climb the famous Sir Louwry’s Pass turn left into Grabouw and then return to Paarl via Viljoen’s Pass and the Franschhoek Pass. Start at La Paris Estate, over Franschhoek Pass, through Villiersdorp, Rawsonville and then the final ascent up Du Toit’s Kloof Pass. The finish is at the top of Du Toit’s Kloof Pass. From the summit of Du Toit’s Kloof it’s a downhill neutral run-in all the way back to the Race Village at La Paris (144km, 1 650m ascent) STAGE 4 Start and finish at La Paris Estate. Du Toitskloof pass (from Paarl side), Slanghoek and back via Bainskloof Pass (127km, 1 450m ascent) STAGE 2 Start and finish at La Paris Estate in Paarl. 40km individual TT for Individually entered open/seeded riders and 40km Team Time Trial for Amateur Team Entrants. Yet with each sportswear innovation there is an undeniable competitive advantage either in the safety, speed, or comfort achieved by the latest designs. At Rudy Project, continuous development is in the name; “Project”. We are on a never ending mission to innovate, renovate, and regenerate, producing better and better products to meet your sporting needs. That leaves you, the customer, with a dilemma. How do you know when it’s worth investing that hard earned cash on the latest helmet, bike, shoes or protein shake? How do you balance the pay-in with the payout? How do you know that competitive edge you’re seeking to invest in will last? It’s not about looking for something novel. Some products are quickly replicated and refined into newer models, or just a new paint job on an old idea. You know it’s worth it when the product can tick all 4 boxes. For the latest scoop on what’s out-there, and what’s outdated, look to the world of pro-athletes. Having debuted at the Tour de France and Ironman European championship in Frankfurt 2015; Rudy Project Tralyx sunglasses are way ahead of the game in sporting eyewear. Let’s just run it through the 4 ticks test. For the kind of sportswear that’s going to last, you want something that builds on the innovation of previous models, combining all the finer attributes and adding just a little extra magic. There are four cornerstone features which makes something worth the purchase; performance, comfort, safety, and style. Box 1; Performance. Literally sculpted by the wind, the Tralyx™ redefines the pinnacle of eyewear bike technology. With an entirely new geometry package, its’ unique and powerful dynamic design makes the Tralyx™ extreme in its look and its performance. The invention of a new patented PowerFlow™ system allows for the incorporation of vents throughout the entire frame. This enhances air circulation, preventing fog, TOTALCOMFORT™ POWERFLOW™ 8| Cyclingnews Event Outline while ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency and unobstructed wide peripheral field of vision. The lenses themselves are equally special; new ImpactX™ 2 photochromic lenses darken 25% faster and have a transition range 60% wider than its predecessors. Vision is clearer, frames are lighter, and aerodynamics are slicker then ever before. We are looking at a new benchmark of design for sport sunglasses, one which is set to last. Tips™ benefit from an inner bendable steel core, allowing the front portion of the tip to very easily adjust and create custom fit factor. This innovation alongside the light and flexible grilamid frame, Ergonose bridge, and helmet friendly straight rods with silicone terminals, combine everything Rudy Project has learned in it’s 30+ years of sunglass development. The Tralyx provide the optimum in wearer comfort, it doesn’t get better than this. Box 2; Comfort. You want a product that utilizes all the latest materials and technology to ensure that, while you’re pushing your body to the max, you’re face isn’t taking the strain. Rudy Project has built it’s reputation on delivering the most comfortable shades on the market. Adjustable temple and nose pieces eliminate pinching on all our glasses. However the all new Adaptive Box 3; Safety. Rudy Project are pioneering in its mission to provide excellence in athlete protection and the Safety Project remains a testament to that. ImpactX™ Rudy Project technology ensures the physical protection for eyes from chemical and atmospheric agents, while shatter-proof lenses protect your eyes from impact induced by crashes, falls or accidents. In the case of the Tralyx, the addition of unique safety fold-in-hinge eliminate any sharp edges, ensure your eyes, nose and face remain protected whatever you dive head-first into. Box 4; Style. Let’s face it, we want top sports gear that’s safe and gets results, but we also really just wanna’ look good! Fortunately this is that final piece of the puzzle and the Tralyx glasses yet again excel. While pro-athletes have already been looking good at the Ironman and on the international cycling circuit, they aren’t the only ones who can rock that sporting chic. In-keeping with that Rudy recognition of individuality, the Tralyx range are fully customizable. You get the look YOU want from your shades, with a choice of 18 new-design lightweight frames and a collection of fully interchangeable lenses. Whether amateur, pro, or just getting on the go, Tralyx will guarantee you’re looking good out there for years to come. 1, 2, 3, 4. Tralyx is for now, for next, and for more. Rudy Project have yet again upped their commitment to the growth of South African cycling. After 30 years in the industry, Rudy Project recognize a quality cycle tour when they see one, so their phenomenal pledge of R3.5 million in product sponsorship represents the ultimate event endorsement. The Rudy Project sponsorship will directly benefit all riders who complete the race with the award of their own set of Tralyx glasses and the privilege of being part of cycling event history. ADAPTIVETIPS™ Cyclingnews Event Outline |9 BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE Amateur team competition SPOILING THE AMATEURS! The organisers of the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope, presented by Rudy Project from 29 February to 4 March 2016, have added a Team Time Trial to the 2016 event as well as incredible added value for riders who enter into the Amateur Teams category. The team time trial will take place on the same day as the individual time trial (stage 2), but only riders entered as 8-man open/seeded teams in the team competition will compete in this discipline. Riders who enter as individuals in the open/seeded category as well as all other racing categories (elite/junior, Vets 30+, Vets 40+ Vets 50+ and elite ladies) will compete in the individual time trial on the triangular course which links Paarl and Franschhoek to La Paris. ASG Events are placing significant focus on the amateur (open/seeded) team competition for next year’s event and we have received wonderful support from our event partners. The Tour’s clothing partner, Ftech, have jumped on board in unbelievable fashion, contributing a custom designed Airfit Cycling Jersey free of charge to every team member. Daily performances will also be rewarded and every member of the winning team receives an official Tour of Good Hope Yellow Leader’s jersey to remember their achievement. These jerseys are valued at R1000 each, which makes the added commitment from Ftech R160 000 – over and above their sponsorship of all the leader’s jerseys for the Tour! Riders who enter as one of these eightperson teams will ride in their own GC competition, separate from the GC competition in the individual open/ seeded category. Once you have entered, team leaders must please liaise with our design wizards at Ftech to finalise their designs via email - [email protected]. Overall times will be recorded by Great Time and the best individually entered open/seeded rider AND the rider who forms part of one of the teams will be allocated a GC prize. Open/seeded (amateur) riders have the option to either enter individually or in teams of eight. These eight-man or eight-woman teams will ride in a specially designated bunch catering for 20 teams. Riders can enter as mixed teams, but will then be regarded as mens’ teams in the overall standings Both the team and individual riders will have their own King of the Mountain (KOM) competition. Individual riders will be seeded into the A bunch and can then compete for the Red Jersey. A separate KOM competition will also be in place for the amateur men’s teams. Over and above this, riders in the amateur team competition will compete for prizes to the value of R60 000 in products sponsored by Rudy Project, Scicon, High 5, Ftech, Fast Forward and SIXS. The team prize in the amateur team competition will take into account the fastest four riders times from a team on a daily basis, which will then be tallied up to calculate the overall winning team. Every member of the winning team will receive a prize hamper valued at R3000, so there’s a lot to race for. 2015 saw quite a few corporate entities take part in the amateur teams category, creating a fledgling rivalry which is likely to be fueled by all the added incentives this year. ONLY 20 TEAM ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THE AMATEUR TEAM CATEGORY ON A FIRST COME FIRST PAID BASIS. 10 | Cyclingnews Event Outline Cyclingnews Event Outline | 11 BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE BESTMED TOUR OF GOOD HOPE 2016 Tour of Good Hope CHOW LIKE A CHAMPION Ever wondered what it takes to keep a pro-athlete like South African national road race champion, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, racking up success after success? As one of three South African riders representing MTN Qhubeka, the first African registered cycling team to participate in the Tour de France, Jacques Janse van Rensburg is becoming something of a cycling icon. A bike fanatic to his bones, were Jacques to have fallen short of his pro cycling dreams he would have chosen a career as a doctor.... Well, the medical profession’s loss... He is certainly our gain as his performance out on the road continues to astound. MTN Qhubeka had a Tour De France debut beyond anything we could have dreamed of. 14 stage top 10 results, including 7 top 5 finishes, and finishing 5th in the overall team competition exceeded everyone’s expectations. It doesn’t take a doctor to know that getting the right nutrition is fundamental to keeping a top athlete like Jacques on the road. However determining exactly what that diet should be, what when and how to eat for maximum performance, is something best left to the experts. High5 was created BY athletes FOR athletes. Working with the top sports scientists their nutritional knowledge is utterly unrivaled, and we’ve gained access to a sneak peak of just what they get their athletes to chow-down on for a typical race day. Presenting a breakdown of Jacques’ typical nutrition intake for a TDF Stage. WARNING, it’ll get you hungry! Breakfast Jacques will typically munch through a bowl of Oats; an omelette; a bowl of rice; fruit juice; and of course a nice cup of coffee. It might seem a lot but you gotta’ start off with the right mix of proteins, carbs, and sufficient hydration to fuel a day of strenuous exercise. Pre Race – 1-2 hours before start Keeping those energy levels up involves snacking on 1-2 small but healthy bites such as small rice cakes, a sandwich, or pancakes; High5 Zero (500ml to 1litre depending on hydration level) is fundamental to race prep. One of our favorite products, these electrolyte sports drink tablets dissolve into a highly refreshing sports drink. Containing Vitamin C and 5 electrolytes - including sodium, magnesium and potassium, as well as maximizing hydration ZERO leaves your body in a prime state to maximize nutrient absorption and get your body working at its best. TRAIN LIKE A CHAMP GET YOUR RACEPACK: Cycle/MTB/Triathlon. Enough nutrition for a 4 hour event. www.high5online.co.za In Race 2-3 High5 Energy Bars or Sports Bars, Jacques has a sweet tooth, favouring caramel and coconut flavours, but each of these balanced bars are low GI, give a balance of simple and complex carbohydrate, and provide one of your 5-a-day, talk about having your cake and eating it!; 4 High5 Energy Gels provide a quick hit of carbohydrates which are easily digested for instantaneous and sustaining energy, helping Jacques push through any energy slumps. 4-5 Bottles of both Water and Energy Drink see him through to the end of the race. Staying hydrated as well as energised is key throughout cycling races at every level. Post Race Directly after race High5 Recovery ensures Jacques’ exhausted muscles get the protein they require to build and heal quickly. A meal of chicken or meat with rice or pasta provides some solid sustenance followed by Fruit Salad with Quark and honey. Hydrating is maximised with further use of award winning High5 Zero on the bus and throughout the evening. Dinner A meat dish with rice, pasta and veggies are prepared by Team Chef, David Higgs. Well if you’ve made it to the elite of the cycling profession we suppose a personal chef is justified…. Oh how the other half live! Post Dinner Another hit of protein drink prior to going to bed means that our pro-cyclist can maximise on his recovery as he sleeps and wakes up ready for another full on day. So that’s what it takes a racing champ to sustain excellence in the middle of extensive tours. Given MTN Qhubeka’s Tour De France performance it’s safe to say Jacques is onto a winner. Stay tuned for his next few races and see just how far the right nutritional plan can take a committed cyclist. You may not be performing on an international circuit, but thanks to High5’s individualised and extensive nutritional guides, you can take advantage of the top sporting science and nutritional products to reach new personal peaks of fitness. With trial packs to test out which products are best for you, and race packs to maximise your competitive success, High5 will always have a nutritional plan perfect for your needs. The Jock is presented by ASG as sister event of the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope. The traditional 154km one-day classic still took take place from Nelspruit (Mbombela) to White River, Sabie and back. However the country’s top road teams and amateurs were really pushed on the 299km tour. According to organiser Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events, the new CSAsanctioned tour is an honest and exciting test of SA’s best. “It’s the only event in which these riders will really be tested according to the standards set by Europe’s leading tours. There is nowhere to hide and the strongest rider wins the tour, full stop.” Unlike the classic European Alpine stage races, De Villiers said the Jock presents a continuous climbing challenge, with a total ascent of 7 200m. 14 | Cyclingnews Event Outline “There are very few flat sections, which you would find quite a bit of on the European valley floors between the mountains. Here, even between the big mountain passes, the Jock is still up and down. “We believe road racing is back and stronger than ever and we would like to keep doing our bit to fuel the fire,” said De Villiers. He said the tour will not be limited to the pro field but also open to serious amateur cyclists who could handle the physical challenge. “It really is a tough ask of these riders and we would like to assist them in the best way possible to get to the finish line every day next year. The final stage, in particular, is a war of attrition.” “We believe in rewarding the top end of the field for their efforts just as much as we believe in providing real value to the amateurs in the event,” he added. De Villiers said both the Classique and Tour would count towards the road component of the new Bestmed National Cycling Series. The Classique will cater for 900 riders, while the field for the Tour will be capped at 300. For more information, visit www. thejock.co.za. The product sponsorship, which is the largest endorsement of its kind in the history of African road racing, will see every finisher in the five-day tour rewarded with a pair of the latest Rudy Project Tralyx eyewear. The Tralyx debuted at this year’s Tour de France, where it was sported by riders from, among others, the Lotto-Jumbo, Astana, EuropCar and Cofidis teams. With professional teams and events now catapulting South Africa onto the global stage, the Italian eyewear manufacturer has set its sights and support on the local market. Southern African agency for Rudy Project, ASG Sport Solutions, has targeted the high-profile, CSAsanctioned Tour of Good Hope as a fitting platform for bringing the brand experience to a wider audience. 18 | Cyclingnews Event Outline “Much as Rudy Project represents the pinnacle of sportswear technology, the Tour of Good Hope equally represents the very best of South African road racing,” said ASG chief executive Steyn du Plessis. “The event has set a new benchmark in road stage racing, offering an array of different categories from elite all the way through to the Grumpy Old Men in one of the most beautiful settings in the world.” “The tour is set to become an iconic cycling event, which Rudy Project can easily associate with.” Du Plessis said the tour also provided one of the most competitive amateur team contests on the local cycling scene. Starting on February 29, the race follows a challenging 515km cloverleaf route through the heart of the Cape Winelands. It comprises a time-trial plus four road stages for pro and amateur teams. Du Plessis said this unprecedented investment in South African cycling was testament to the fact that the Western Cape was fast becoming a favourite destination for cyclists from all over the world. “The Tour of Good Hope has captured the imagination of cyclists from across the globe, and with good reason. “That’s why the Rudy Project Tralyx is the perfect fit as these glasses are revolutionising the face of competitive eyewear.” He said features included a light and flexible frame to ensure aerodynamic efficiency and a unique ventilation system to reduce fog and provide visual clarity in all riding conditions. “A comfortable custom fit for every wearer is made possible by the bendable steel core, which allows the front portion of the tip to be easily adjusted.” Go to www.tourofgoodhope.co.za for more info or to enter. We have had many riders “on the wrong side of 65” approach us wanting to ride in the Tour, but who were worried they’d be left out on their own and too far off the pace every day. And so, we’ve roped in some more help from our friends at the Road Ranger motorbike marshals who have offered to assist in getting the “pensioners group” home every day and provide traffic protection. The Grumpy Old Men will take off last every day and they will be forced to remain together as a bunch. 24 | Cyclingnews Event Outline If you are older than 65, and fancy yourself as a racing snake, you can still ride in the normal open/seeded bunches with all the other age groups mixed in together or with the 50+ masters racing category. Most Grumpy Old Men who approached us were able to do a 4 hour Cape Town Cycle Tour. Riders who are within the 4 hour 30 minute Cycle Tour window, or believe that they can get there if they train properly, are invited to enter. It is, however, an absolute prerequisite to commit to a significant training regime to ensure you can manage multiple days on the bike comfortably. The Grumpy Old Men bunch will be limited to 50 riders. When you do your entry, there is a Grumpy Old Men (65+) category which you have to select. For the pensioners aiming at their best Cape Town Cycle Tour time ever, we assure them that they will achieve their personal best following 5 days of riding in the Winelands – the Cycle Tour will feel like a walk in the park.
