Summer Sunday school begins June 8th and continues through August 10th. Below is a brief description of classes for this summer. We hope you will join us! Adults: All adults will gather in the Fellowship Hall this summer for a study of Romans taught by Rev. Joe Evans. We will be using N. T. Wright’s for Everyone Bible Study Guide. With a scholar's mind and a pastor's heart, Tom Wright will walk us through Romans in this guide designed especially with everyday readers in mind. It is designed to help us understand Scripture in fresh ways under the guidance of one of the world's leading New Testament scholars. Thoughtful questions, prayer suggestions, and useful background and cultural information all guide us more deeply into God's Word. Middle and High School: All youth will gather in the Youth Room. This summer the youth will embark on a ten week study of different topics using movie clips that will be compared to Scripture. Topics for the summer are Accountability, Anger, Attitude, Boundaries, Character, Choices, Compassion, Decision Making, Forgiveness, and Our Actions. These topics will use movie clips from movies such as Shrek, Bruce Almighty, The Avengers, The Blind Side and Spiderman II. Preschool through 5th Grade: All children will gather in the Art Room where Susie Baxter, our Director of Christian Education, will teach. This summer we will be using a multi-age curriculum called “All-In-One Sunday School.” We will study the following topics: God gives us his armor to protect us, God's Word makes us strong, It's good to give thanks, It's important to listen to God, God is more powerful than anything or anybody, God helps us stand up for what's right, God wants us to obey him, God wants us to tell the truth, We can trust God when life is unfair, and When temptation comes, run away. Youth Mission Trip June 29 - July 3 Pine Ridge, South Dakota We are again partnering with Youthworks to spend a fantastic week serving others as we lead community and kids’ programs and complete construction projects. We look forward to seeing God work in and through us as we build relationships and grow in our faith. Joe 12 1 Memorials News from the Session The Session met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 26. The following action was approved: $1,200 in memorials given in the name of Jim Casselberry will be contributed to Hillsboro Presbyterian Church to fund two scholarships for their Guatemalan education program. Special offerings will be collected in June for People Helping People upon request from the Diaconate with a goal to raise $3,000. One worship service will be held from June 8 through August 10 at 10:00 am with Sunday School at 9:00 am. A congregational meeting to elect church officers who will roll onto the Session and Diaconate in August will be held on Sunday, June 8 following the worship service. Up to $25,000 in undesignated memorial funds will be made available to assist with the renovation project for the Boys and Girls Club. A wedding for Berrie Pate and Eric Coble will be held on August 9. Although non-church members are usually not allowed to have weddings at First Presbyterian, the couple’s church sanctuary is being renovated and unable to host weddings, presenting extraordinary circumstances. Last year, nine homes were improved with an average cost of $3526, and the Diaconate is challenging our church to raise $3,000 during the month of June. These home improvements have radically improved the exterior of many homes on the eastside of Columbia, has given their residents (who are all over the age of 65 and cannot make or contract such improvements on their own) a sense of tremendous pride, and has even been a contributing factor in reducing crime in the area. First Presbyterian Church has participated for the past two years, along with 800 volunteers over the last three years, in People Helping People Day. During this annual event the exteriors and yards of 80 homes have been improved, cleaned up, etc. for those in need in Columbia, but the radical improvement that we could make with your contribution will make an even greater impact. Please send in a donation to the church office today! June 1 - NaCoMe Sunday June 8 - Dan Garman, Dick Green, Bill Handy, Andy Moore. June 15– John Chiles, Joe Graham, Jr., Brooks Jones, Michael Williams. June 22 - Greg Hanners, Ron Neal, Gary Richcreek, Jeff Smith. June 29 –John Hill, Hal & Millie Landers, Rhodes Scott. Dear Church Family Thank you for your cards, prayers, and encouraging words. Your overwhelming support has helped us cope with the difficult loss of two parents. Sincerely, Jeff and Karen Smith 10 3 News from the Deacons Vacation Bible School June 16-20 9:00-12:00 Volunteers are needed to assist in a food drive — operating now through June 14 — to benefit Harvest Share Food Pantry of Maury County. Volunteers are the core of VBS! We need your help leading a variety of Bible time activities. Please look at the areas below and prayerfully consider where you would like to serve. Tribe Leaders: Tribe is just another word for “family.” Tribe leaders don’t have to set up or teach anything; just come each day, help tribe members follow the instructions at the centers and during closing tribe time, guide discussions, using the tips in the Tribe Leader Pocket Guide, and generally join the fun. You will lead a group of up to ten children of varying ages. Be prepared to dress in costume and play the role of an Israelite. The Tribe names are chosen from one of the biblical Israelite tribes, from the list in Genesis 49 of the names of Jacob’s sons. Israelite Camp Tent Hosts: Be ready to guide tribes in making easy, handson craft projects. Check out the interesting historical facts in the Israelite Camp Tent Host Manual. Have a great time as you visit with kids and adults while they work. 4 The food drive, sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, ends on “Brand It Blue Day” when volunteers working with the private staffing company throughout North America will dedicate the day to volunteerism in the fight against hunger. “‘Brand It Blue Day’ is a day each Express franchise can come together for one great cause to help the community,” said Elwin Roe, Mt. Pleasant Express franchisee. “Brand It Blue Day is a chance for Express offices to honor the communities that have supported us through the years by giving back.” Donations of non-perishable food can be dropped of at the Express office located at 1259 North main Street in Mt. Pleasant through June 14. “Because Brand It Blue Day takes place on Father’s Day weekend, we feel it’s a great opportunity for families to enjoy the importance of volunteering together,” Roe said. “It’s going to be a great time to bring families together and show what it looks like to help others.” Volunteers may sign up at ExpressPros.com/BrandItBlue. Volunteers will receive Express blue T-shirts to wear on Brand It Blue Day. In 2013, 192 Express offices and 1,500 volunteers donated more than 110,000 pounds of food to local food banks. - See more at: http://m.columbiadailyherald.com/news/localnews/food-drive-needs-helpers-donations#sthash.FnqQp94b.dpuf 9 Fun & Games Leader: Check out all the helpful information and instructions in the Fun & Games Leader Manual. Lead Tribes in high-fun, lowtech games at four sessions of Fun & Games each day. News from the Deacons One of the local charitable agencies to which a quarterly contribution is made from our church’s benevolence funds administered by the Diaconate is Maury Chaplain Ministries. This ministry has been in operation at the Maury County Jail for almost 14 years. Maury Chaplain Ministries provides a full time pastoral presence to the approximately 6000 inmates processed at Maury County Jail, their families, as well as the Sheriff’s Department staff. They operate with one full time and two part time chaplains. They are 100% funded by contributions and two annual fundraising events. Youth: You are a vital part of Vacation Bible School! Please register online or contact Susie Baxter if you are available to assist during the week. Rising 6th-12th grade are eligible to assist in many areas. Recently a group a women from our church (Mary Khim, Marcy Lay, Linda Horner) began working with Maury Chaplain Ministries to help prepare female inmates to complete their HISET exam (alternate version of a GED exam). These ladies have some modest needs for supplies (study materials, books, folders, etc.) for this mission. If you would like to help with these needs or would like some more information related to their mission, please contact one of them. Nursery: A nursery will be provided for volunteers children under the age of three. Maury County Senior Center is happy to provide many programs for the seniors and baby boomers in Maury County to dispel loneliness and depression as well as provide avenues for seniors to share their expertise, experiences and the concerns for others less fortunate. Among the many items needed to support this benevolence is a new sewing machine, playing cards, all occasion cards for seniors, 4x6 photo paper and padded folding chairs. Your support and contributions are needed to help many of the programs offered survive. Please call Executive Director Brenda Grimsley at 380-3950. 8 Retired Adults: Never think you’re too old to enjoy VBS! Cindy Baxter will be in charge of our Food Tent again this year, she will need assistants to help her set up and serve the children each day. The Food Tent is a popular spot at the Israelite Camp and is a good way to see and get to know the younger children in the church. If you’re available for one day, two days, or all days, we would love to have your help! Can’t help during VBS? There are many items that we need to have donated for the week of VBS. Look at the list below and see if there is anything that you would like to donate. Large Sponges (the type you wash cars with) 4 Spray Bottles-9 Wet Wipes-2 packages Mouse Traps-9 Rat Traps-2 For the Food Tent Dried fruit, almonds, olive oil, honey Red and Green seedless grapes, cheeses, fresh bread, and hummus Set Decoration: On Saturday June 7 and Saturday June 14 we will be preparing the set for VBS. If you would like to help we will meet in the Fellowship Hall from 9:00-12:00. If you have not registered your child, grandchild, or friend please do so as soon as possible. It helps the planning team to know how many children to expect and to set up Tribes. If you have any questions please contact Susie Baxter at 388-1985 or [email protected]. 5 Choir Concert: Monday, June 2, the Celebration Singers Youth Choir of Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Shreveport, LA will be in Columbia and will perform a choir concert here in our sanctuary at noon. Monday’s concert incorporates the theme of “Love”, which gathers us, seeks us, and saves us. Music will include Stan Pethel’s Gather the People, Alan Pote’s Psalm 139, Tom Fettke’s Beautiful Savior, and Tom Witt’s arrangement of How Great Thou Art. The noon concert will be dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of three people who helped shape T. Wes Moore’s life: Jim Casselberry (close family friend), Daryl Jack (Spring Hill High School band director), and Lanena Moore (mother). All are invited to attend this midday musical feast and support these young people in their ministry of song. The Bridge Club will meet at 1:00 P.M. on June 23rd at the church. The Men’s Bible Study will meet at 6:00 A.M. at MRMC on June 10th & 24th. Summer Choir Our Chancel Choir is on the hunt for some reinforcements during our upcoming summer months! If you love to sing, especially with a group, and are between the ages of 7 and 107, you are invited to join us to sing for worship services this summer. Our only requirement is that you are able to commit to our Wednesday evening rehearsal time at 7:00, but during the months of June, July and August, we will only hold practices every other week, so as to lighten everyone’s load a little! Our rehearsals are opportunities for musical growth, fellowship….. even sometimes treats! Our first “summer” rehearsal will be June 4.
