SoundTraxx Academy is a 2-day seminar at the SoundTraxx manufacturing facility in Durango, Colorado catered to any model railroader that uses SoundTraxx products. It will allow participants an opportunity to perform a SoundTraxx Digital Sound Decoder installation and get an intimate look at how the features and programming of SoundTraxx DSDs work for both steam and diesel locomotives. Do I get to keep the locomotives and decoders used in the installation? Yes, the locomotives and decoders are yours to keep and included in the price of the registration. Do I need to bring anything for the class? No, we will supply all materials for the installation, including command stations to borrow during the programming classes. You are however, welcome to bring your own tools if you’d like. Please do not bring your own command station or cabs. You may bring your own models if you’re looking for a little installation advice, but we will all use the same locomotives for the installation class to allow for consistency during the lesson. What are the accomodations like in the dorms if I decide to stay there? The Animas Hall dormitories at Ft. Lewis College are a great value at just $32 a night, and are available from Wednesday July 28th - Saturday July 30th. They are apartment-style dorms that sleep up to 4 people in individual bedrooms and share a common family room, bathroom and kitchen. This fee allows each person to have their own bedroom but be aware they are furnished with twin beds. The dorms are not air conditioned. In July, it can be a little warm in the daytime, though it cools down quite a bit in the evenings. Please keep in mind that the windows do not open, so a small fan to circulate some air might be a worthwhile item to pack (or purchase once here) if you elect to stay here. What other lodging options are available in Durango? Due to the large number of tourists that come to Durango every summer there are many great lodging options, including several hotel chains such as Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn and Comfort Inn - as well as several campgrounds. For more information on these and other great options check out the Durango Tourism Office website at www.durango.org. What airport do I use to get there? Durango La Plata County Regional Airport (DRO) is located just 10 miles from town and offers nonstop flights from Denver on United Airlines and nonstop flights from Dallas, Phoenix and Los Angeles on American Airlines. Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is located about 3.5 hours away, while Denver International Airport (DIA) is about 7.5 hours away. What is included in my registration? Your registration includes everything you need, including an HO scale steam and diesel locomotive with sound decoders, all printed materials, tools, breakfast and lunch on the two class days, and a roundhouse/yard tour on the Durango & Silverton Railroad. Train tickets, transportation, lodging and dinner each night is not included, though discounted options exist. Continues next page May my family go on the train rides and take the yard tour with me? Yes! All friends and family may ride the train with the group and receive the same special group discount. They must be included on your registration form so we can have accurate ticket counts when we submit the final reservation numbers. If I ride the Cumbres and Toltec on Sunday does SoundTraxx provide transportation to and from Chama? No, sorry, but Chama is a scenic and easy 2-hour drive from Durango. We will have staff members on the train to help people check in and get their ticket, but we will not be able to provide transportation to and from Chama, NM. Reservations for this train ride will be made directly with the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad using a promotional code, and we’ve been assured that the group will be sitting together. The discounted ticket also includes lunch on the train and a guided yard tour. What can my family do while I am at class? The Four Corners area offers many great options for fun family activities including fantastic shopping, river rafting, hiking, jeeping, horseback riding, cycling, fishing, and Mesa Verde National Park (one of the most-visited parks in America!). There is plenty to do in Southwest Colorado during the summer! The seminar will begin at roughly 8am until 5pm so please plan accordingly. What is the weather like in Southwest Colorado during July? Awesome, that’s why we live here! Weather in Southwest Colorado is typically nice with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lows overnight in the 50s. The weather however can change quite rapidly in the mountains and we recommend dressing in layers, especially on the train rides which climb to 10,000 feet in elevation. Also be aware that late July is typically the heart of our monsoon season which generally runs from mid-July to mid-August and typically produces afternoon thunderstorms.
