From starting out as a `tea boy` at the legendary Trident

From starting out as a 'tea boy' at the legendary Trident Recording Studios in London, England to
working his way up through engineering, mixing and production, Al Clay has, and very much still is,
enjoying a prolific 25+ year musical journey through the many facets of the record and film industry.
Whilst working at Trident, Al worked with many amazing bands, artists and producers amongst them
the then session keyboard player - and now Academy Award winning composer - Hans Zimmer.
Al formed a great working friendship with Hans from the first day they met and thereafter, realizing
Al's potential and unrelenting work ethic even at such a young age, Hans asked him to be his
exclusive 'right hand man' and Chief Engineer at his privately owned facility in London, Lillie Yard
Studios. Together at Lillie Yard Al and Hans would start carving a unique path into the Movie
Industry, incorporating their first US movie in 1988 'Rain Man'. This gained Hans his first Oscar
nomination for Best Score.
At the age of 19 whilst still at Lillie Yard, Al met and worked with record producer Gil Norton, who
instantly recognized Al's vastly growing expertise in all genres of music and extensive knowledge of
emerging music technology. Gil asked Al to work alongside him producing, recording and mixing
many internationally recognized and platinum selling artists. Soon after, Al left Lillie Yard and started
his freelance journey that encompassed working with groundbreaking artists and bands.
Inevitably, and after honing his skills over the next 3 years, he was offered his first production role
with a new Irish band called The Frames, led by now Oscar winning singer/songwriter/actor Glen
Hansard, (Lead Actor) Once, (Music) - The Swell Season.
As word quickly spread, Al seamlessly made the transition to Producer/Mixer and within 2 years had
earned his first UK #1 album and single with The Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo -, and US top 10 - by
Del Amitri - Roll to Me - which lead onto many further chart topping successes and multi platinum
selling albums - Pixes, Blur, Therapy?, Stereophonics, James, Erasure and Del Amitri, etc.
The successes continued for Al formulating a career that has spanned all types of music from Indie,
Rock, Pop and of course Film, integrating his production skills into film scores with such recording
artists as Robbie Williams, Linkin Park and actor Sacha Baron Cohen recording, producing and
mixing the now infamous track - I Like To Move it -, from the #1 Box office smash, Madagascar.
Al made the decision to move from London to Los Angeles in 2003 where he began working almost
exclusively once more with long time friend, Grammy and Oscar winning composer Hans Zimmer on
movies such as Blackhawk Down, 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' (1,2 & 3), 'Batman
Begins, Madagascar I & II, as well as countless others before bouncing back to producing/mixing
albums for artists such as Pink, This World Fair, and Uh Huh Her.
Over the past few years Al has made a concerted effort to widen the list of composers he has
collaborated with in the role of producer, mixer and writer resulting in the list below:
Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Powell, Henry Jackman, Steve
Jablonsky, Nick Urata, Geoff Zanelli, Heitor Pereira, Jimmy Levine, Dominic Lewis and Matthew
