“I've noticed that the hard sciences are something of a one-way street
where people only drop out of them into other subjects/majors (you never
hear of somebody getting fed up with their history major and signing up
for physics), so having a good foundation is really key to success.”
Tyler Jorgensen, '02
"It was great to be a part of the
First Annual Golf Classic for Scholarship.
Catching up with friends and faculty was
really fun. It reminded me of those last days
of school on campus when we would see
Alums coming back...it was simply great TO

“Sports and recreation as lifetime
activities are so tied to your early experiences. As a teacher at The
Country School, I try my hardest to make everyone's experience
throughout the 11 grades fun, meaningful, and rewarding. I care
deeply about the children, and hope I can instill a lifetime of
enjoyment for activity well after they've left The Country School.” Chris Wallack, athletic director

“It was at TCS that I first found a love for
academics that I never had before...The academics at TCS
marked a pivotal point in my life. Although my parents assure
me that I would have done fine without it, I don't believe them
at all. Simply put, TCS was the most important and
influential school I have attended.” Zef Konst, '04
Dear TCS Families and Friends,
Thank you for your deep and heart-felt generosity to The Country School. As I look back at my first year as
Head of School and try to distill what makes The Country School the unique institution that it is, the word I
keep returning to again and again is passion.
Our students are passionate about what they are doing, whether it’s in the classroom, on the stage, in the art
studio, or on the athletic field. Our faculty are passionate about helping our students become the best they can
be. And you, our families and friends, are passionate about supporting our school and its mission, as your generous gifts of time, talent,
and treasure so clearly convey.
As you read through this Report of Giving, I suggest that you give special attention to the testimonials provided by our alumni. If you
want to see passion embodied, read what our former students say about their TCS experience and how it shaped their futures. I hope
you will take both pleasure and pride in knowing that your generosity this past year has been instrumental in ensuring that another
generation of students receives the gift of an education that lasts a lifetime.
With passion and gratitude,
Laurie Bottiger, Ph.D.

Mission Statement
At The Country School, we are committed to creating an environment which is both academically challenging and responsive
to the social and emotional needs of growing children. Encouraging close relationships among students and teachers and
cooperation between home and school, we foster a feeling of family. The school community strives to nurture each child,
valuing his or her unique gifts in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The traditional disciplines of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language form the core of our
academic program. Because we seek to educate the whole child, the school is also committed to a vital arts program, strong
offerings in physical education, and challenging opportunities for individual growth. Our teaching is spirited and promotes
active learning. We provide experiences which are sensitive to different learning styles and stages of development. We guide
students to discover their own strengths and develop confidence in their abilities to learn. Our program is rich and flexible,
offering many pathways to success.
We recognize our responsibility to prepare students to meet not just academic challenges, but personal and ethical ones as
well. Our faculty provides leadership for character development, guiding students toward self-reliance. We encourage our
students to look beyond themselves, to work cooperatively with others, and to serve their communities and the larger world.
We expect much of our students, because we believe they have much to give.
As we honor the creativity, sense of wonder and exuberance in childhood, we hope to stir in our students enthusiasm for
learning as an exciting, lifelong activity. We work to equip each student with a solid mastery of essential skills, healthy selfesteem, and a clear sense of values. At The Country School, we strive to empower young people to reach their highest, not
only in school but also in life.

THE FOUNDERS’ PROMISE – MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
The Founders’ Promise Fund (FPF) is an investment in a child’s future, awarding need-based scholarships to a wide range
of students. There are two ways that our community comes together to support the Founders’ Promise Fund. The first is
by making a gift to the Scholarship Fund. These donations are applied to TCS operations and immediately awarded to
deserving students. The second is by making a contribution to the Endowment Fund. FPF Endowment serves as a scholarship savings account and is held in perpetuity, with only the interest income returned to TCS operations for scholarship.

PLANTING THE SEEDS: GIVING BACK
When, during the Light Up the Stage Fashion Show, Rebecca Joslow ’04 returned to campus to share some
of her fashion designs, she knew she wanted to do more for her alma mater. Rebecca agreed to offer a
Fashion Design Workshop for TCS students. She charged a nominal fee, and donated all proceeds─amounting to $425─to the Founders’ Promise Fund for Scholarship so that other students could
benefit from a TCS education, just as she had. “I loved my TCS experience and I wanted to give back,”
Rebecca said.
A parent had this observation about Rebecca and her efforts to support TCS: "Talent runs deep at TCS as does the idea of
giving back. The seeds are planted at an early age."

Catching up with friends and faculty was
really fun. It reminded me of those last days
of school on campus when we would see
Alums coming back...it was simply great TO
BE BACK!” David Kelly, ‘04
“Sports and recreation as lifetime
activities are so tied to your early experiences. As a teacher at The
Country School, I try my hardest to make everyone's experience
throughout the 11 grades fun, meaningful, and rewarding. I care
deeply about the children, and hope I can instill a lifetime of
enjoyment for activity well after they've left The Country School.” Chris Wallack, athletic director

“Outdoor education has been
essential in the way I view myself, and my relationship with the

planet. I am constantly reminded of the fortitude, and the
fragility of the earth. This interest in the natural world started in
my home, was kindled and fueled at TCS...Learning from the
woods and waters and mountains somehow makes everything
I learn in the classroom make more sense.” Kate McNally, ‘09
"I became the person I am today

Bianca Salkin ‘04
“It was at TCS that I first found a love for
academics that I never had before...The academics at TCS
marked a pivotal point in my life. Although my parents assure
me that I would have done fine without it, I don't believe them
at all. Simply put, TCS was the most important and
influential school I have attended.” Zef Konst, '04
