WELCOME | BIENVENUE
Dear Visitors,
Chers visiteurs,
As Governor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the
great State of Vermont. While you are here, I invite you
to explore Vermont's Lake Champlain Region and enjoy
the wonderful activities Vermont has to offer.
À titre de gouverneur, je me réjouis de vous accueillir
dans le grand État du Vermont. Tandis que vous êtes ici,
je vous invite à explorer la région du lac Champlain et à
profiter des merveilleuses activités que le Vermont a à
offrir.
From our farmers' markets brimming with local foods
and hand crafted products, to our great beaches and
bike path in Burlington, to the laid back lifestyle that is
so typical of the Lake Champlain Islands, the region
has much to offer. I hope you will take time to enjoy the
fishing, boating, biking, shopping, dining and concerts
and festivals available throughout the region. I guarantee
there is something for everyone.
During your stay, I also encourage you to sample our
craft foods, visit our breweries and wineries, and even
pack up some to bring home with you. Vermont is home
to the best local food and beverages, so you will not be
disappointed.
With our Green Mountains to the east and Lake
Champlain to the west, our landscape beckons you to
relax, take a deep breath and enjoy your visit. Vermont
is a special place and we are happy to share it with you.
Welcome to Vermont!

De nos marchés agricoles regorgeant de produits
alimentaires et artisanaux d’ici à nos plages, en passant
par la piste cyclable de Burlington et le mode de vie
décontracté propre aux îles du lac Champlain, la région
a beaucoup à offrir.

WHY BURLINGTON
Larry Davis, Willard Street Inn
Burlington adds spice to your life! Our vibrant lakeside
city is well “seasoned” in so many ways and the good
life is served up both warm and cold. Seasonal weather
reports: Spring is “COOL” and starts with maple syrup fun
and St. Patrick’s Day & Mardi-Gras parades marching
briskly to cruises on Lake Champlain from Burlington’s
waterfront plus the not-to-be-missed Discover Jazz Festival. Summer is “HOT” because there is so much to do in
the city, nearby Champlain Islands and the whole region.
(FYI - actually the temperature is nice & warm which
makes being outdoors delightful!) Big and small activities
abound from cheering on 8,000+ runners in the Vermont
City Marathon, 4th of July fireworks, outdoor concerts,
hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, sailing, paddle-boarding, artisan beer & wine festivals, to outdoor cafes on the
Church Street Marketplace and lots more. Fall is “CHILL”
with spectacular views of colored leaves, 14 miles of
bike path alongside Lake Champlain, Farmers’ Markets
in Burlington and nearby towns, pick your own apples
and pumpkins, or check out Vermont’s most famous
residents: our cows. Winter is “WHITE HOT” because
the scenic Green Mountains turned into a snow-covered
Mecca for skiers and snowboarders enjoying a day in the
powder just an easy drive away. Burlington’s more than
40,000 year-round residents, plus the city’s many visitors,
enjoy other wintertime fun with great restaurants, first
class entertainment at Flynn Theater, Higher Ground and
other spots, sports fans see great hockey and basketball
at the University of Vermont, and the year ends (and
starts right) with First Night celebration activities all over
the city. Experience Burlington to enjoy, relax and recharge with its engaging blend of the great “seasonings”
of Mother Nature, culture, sophistication, food and fun.

Vermont offers something for everyone in the family.
Learn the history of Lake Champlain on one of the
narrated cruises leaving from Burlington on board the
363-passenger Spirit of Ethan Allen or 149-passenger
Northern Lights, happening daily in the warmer

surrounding Vermont and New York shoreline, including
a cruise up Otter Creek.
While on the grounds of the Basin Harbor Club, visit the
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and step aboard
their replica gunboat, the Philadelphia II, explore over
300 shipwrecks in their Nautical Archaeology Center,
and learn about the American Revolution and how early
inhabitants left their mark on the Champlain Valley. On
the way back into Burlington, you can stop at Shelburne
Farms, a nonprofit education center for sustainability
including 1,400 acres of working farmland and sample

their award winning cheeses, or Shelburne Museum, a
museum of art, design, and Americana. Over 150,000
works are exhibited in 38 exhibition buildings, 25 of which
are historic and were relocated to the Museum grounds.
Once back in Burlington, visit the ECHO Lake Aquarium
and Science Center to learn about the ecology and
natural history of the lake or visit with one of over 70
species of fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and reptiles
that call it home.
Take in a game at Centennial Field, one of the oldest
stadiums in minor league baseball, on the University of
Vermont campus, and watch the Vermont Lake Monsters
battle their opponent. If you’re lucky, you might even get
a high five from their mascot, Champ!
In winter, give fat biking a try at the Catamount Outdoor
Family Center, or rent one from one of our local bike
shops such as Earl’s Cyclery, North Star Sports, or

proving that no matter what time of year, Vermont offers

OUTDOOR RECREATION:
VERMONT OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONe
Jeff Morton, The Chill Foundation
Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, snowboarding, hunting,
fishing, or camping, Vermont’s vibrant outdoor culture
offers something for everyone. The Green Mountain State
is home to some of the best recreational opportunities
anywhere in the US and provides some of the most
affordable experiences that you won’t forget.
Visitors from all over the world flock to Vermont’s fullservice ski resorts in the winter months to experience
the terrain. Ski and ride during the day and enjoy après
beverages by the fire in the lodge after the sun goes
down. During the winter, outdoor enthusiasts also enjoy
ice climbing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, cross country
skiing, and snowmobiling throughout some of the most
beautiful parts of the state.
Can’t be here during the winter? Don’t worry. Summer
offers just as many exciting opportunities.
Participate in the Vermont City Marathon along
Burlington’s beautiful waterfront in May or go swimming
and boating on Lake Champlain.

Lake Champlain is Vermont’s largest body of water and
home to the illusive lake monster; Champ. Take a scenic
boat ride, go fishing, or even stand-up paddleboarding.
Lake Champlain is the perfect place to spend your hot
summer days cooling off and relaxing.
You can also enjoy the beauty of Vermont’s state parks
for a night, or an entire week. The prices can’t be beat
and make camping with your entire family an affordable
experience for everyone! Once you are relaxing around
the campfire, roasting marshmallows, you won’t want to
leave.
Take a day to hike up Camel’s Hump or go biking through
the Champlain Islands. The breathtaking views will leave
you in awe.
Regardless of which recreational outdoor activities you
enjoy, one thing is guaranteed, you won’t be bored and
you won’t go home disappointed. While you are here,
relax, turn your cell phone off, and take in all of the
amazing sights and sounds that Vermont has to offer!

local farmers to our dinner plates.
The number of farmers in Vermont is growing and the
number of small farms is on the rise too. Furthermore,
Vermont’s farmers are a diverse bunch, with an
increased number of female farmers, minority farmers,
and young farmers (a 22% increase in the past
five years). Want to get involved in Vermont's food
community, but are wondering where to start? It’s simpler
than you think!
LEARN:: Read about local food issues in the food
sections of local papers and online. Check the websites
of your local agricultural nonprofits like the Intervale
Center, NOFA Vermont, Rural Vermont, and Shelburne
Farms for seminars, workshops, and discussions. Get to
know your farmer!

TAKE A COOKING CLASS:: from one of the area’s
renowned teaching kitchens, like those at City Market,
Healthy Living, and or a private class from a local chef.
Shop at your farmers’ market. Burlington hosts a yearround farmers’ market, and many neighboring towns offer
a variety of summer options.
PICK YOUR OWN:: Nothing beats heading out directly
to the farm on a warm summer day! Places like Hackett’s
Orchard, Allenholm Farm, and Adam’s Apples, just to
name a few. For more information and directions, visit a
site like http://www.pickyourown.org/VT.htm.
CELEBRATE:: Many farms and nonprofits like the
Intervale Center and Shelburne Farms offer familyfriendly summer events where you can listen to live
music, eat great food, and enjoy quality time with the
kids.
SHARE A MEAL:: Buy fresh, delicious food from a
farmers’ market, produce stand or dine at one of the
many restaurants that buy directly from Vermont farmers.
Come to the table with friends and family, and celebrate

a stunningly beautiful tech hub
Katie Taylor, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce
Named one of the most promising tech hubs by Techie.
com and one of the most innovative tech hubs by Forbes
Magazine, Burlington and its surrounding communities
are a hotspot of creative entrepreneurialism. With a
state-of-the-art city-wide fiber optic network, the city
has grabbed the attention of national organizations like
US Ignite because of its promising combination of tech
infrastructure, talented professionals, and renowned
educational institutions. US Ignite, an organization that
supports the development of next-generation applications,
named Burlington one of its 17 Ignite communities in 2013.
The recognition just highlighted what residents of the city
already knew: Burlington is the home of a new generation
of exciting and innovative startups and tech ventures,
and BTV Ignite, the city’s partnership with the national
organization, is just the tip of the iceberg for technologybased start-ups in Chittenden County.
For businesses just starting out, the city and its
surrounding communities offer a wealth of opportunities.
LaunchVT, an annual business pitch competition run by
the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, awards
cash prizes and in-kind resources to entrepreneurs who
deliver plans for a new business enterprise demonstrating
exceptional potential in today’s market. Entering its
third year, the competition’s previous winners – Gredio,
a software start-up for food companies, and IrisVR,
an immersive design and presentation tool – show
how mentorship and access to capital and mentorship
can positively impact young companies. The financial
resources allowed IrisVR to grow its team, and Gredio
continues to expand. In 2015, businesses will compete for
$30k in cash prizes and $45k in in-kind resources, with
a $15k cash prize for the second place winner as well as
in-kind resources.
Though Burlington maintains a small town feel, the vibrant
tech community plays on a national stage. In May 2015,
Burlington is partnering with distinguished organizations
from around the country to participate in GigHacks, a
multi-city hackathon – the first of its kind. Alongside
teams in cities from San Francisco to Charlotte, North
Carolina, Burlington participants will work for 48 hours
on the development of advanced applications to provide
real-life problem solving: creating more jobs, improving
connectivity, and enabling high-level responsiveness
in industries like healthcare and national security.
Burlington’s GigHack will be held at the city’s own startup success story, Dealer.com’s award-winning modern
industrial facility on Pine Street.
The shores of Lake Champlain are certainly an idyllic spot
to spend your next vacation, but they’re also the backbone
of a thriving tech ecosystem that’s only getting hotter.

Vermont’s Champlain Islands, just north of Burlington,
hug the shores of Lake Champlain all the way to the
Canadian border. With 200 miles of shoreline to explore
and enjoy, the Islands are a great place to vacation in
summer, fall and even winter! The Islands are half way
between downtown Burlington and Montreal, so you can
plan a visit to both. (Don’t forget your passport!) . Here
you will find five small, historic towns, the first founded
400 years ago by Samuel de Champlain himself. From
South Hero to Isle La Motte, you will find bucolic farms,
vibrant villages, people visiting from around the world,
and everywhere you look, the Lake.
Now you are ready for biking, swimming, boating, loafing,
golfing, fine dining and picnicking! Take in an outdoor
concert, a Shakespeare play, or bring your appetite to the
farmers’ markets for local food. Explore antique shops,
galleries and farms. At night tuck yourself in at one of our
many lakeside B&B’s, inns, or a campground and enjoy
the quiet.
PLAY OUTSIDE::
Fall is a great time for biking, hiking, kayaking, leaf
peeping and enjoying the fruits of the vine. In February

local plays compete for your attention with comedy acts, Shakespeare, as well as
the latest Broadway hits.

Experience our diverse culture
Tom Torti, President, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce
The story of Vermont, the story of the Lake Champlain
Region, cannot be told without telling the story of
generations of "new Americans" who came here seeking
relief from persecution, the freedom to practice their
beliefs without harassment and the sense of welcoming
that Vermont offers to all who seek comfort in its hills and
along its waters.
Burlington has acted as the melting pot for Vermont
much like New York City has for most of our nation.
French-Canadians, Italians, Jews, Poles, Irish and
other groups all found their way here and became the
leaders of our community. Even today businesses,
streets, memorials, statuary, voting roles and the names
of political leaders trace their lineage to ancestors who
made their way to the numerous ethnic neighborhoods
that existed then and today. Each group ultimately
became accepted and ingrained into the community
with many of these groups aligning today to save a true
historical artifact of the old Jewish neighborhoods in the
North End: The Lost Shul Mural.
During the latter half of the twentieth century, Burlington
once again stepped forward to provide refuge and hope
for new immigrants looking to start a new life free from
fear and oppression. Refugees from Southeast Asia
fleeing the ravages of strife following the Vietnam War
found Vermont and the Burlington area a place where
education, jobs and community support abounded.
Likewise did Eastern Europeans, Sudanese Lost Boys,
Somalis, Bantus and many other groups. In fact, within
Burlington city schools you can hear more than 50
languages and dialects spoken and see youth wearing
traditional clothing, practicing social and religious
traditions and engaged in school sports and other
activities.
Vermont has long been considered a place where
anyone is welcome to share in the beauty of our
landscape and enjoy all that our state has to offer
visitors. In fact, Vermont was the first state in the nation
to enact civil unions for same sex couples and the first
state that chose to extend marriage rights to all couples.
Vermont is proud of our inclusive history and we look
forward to sharing all that our state has to offer with you.
