Seasonal weather reports: Spring is “COOL” and starts with maple syrup fun and St. Patrick’s Day & Mardi-Gras parades marching briskly to cruises on Lake Champlain from Burlington’s waterfront plus the not-to-be-missed Discover Jazz Festival. Summer is “HOT” because there is so much to do in the city, nearby Champlain Islands and the whole region. (FYI - actually the temperature is nice & warm which makes being outdoors delightful!) Fall is “CHILL” with spectacular views of colored leaves, 14 miles of bike path alongside Lake Champlain, Farmers’ Markets in Burlington and nearby towns, pick your own apples and pumpkins, or check out Vermont’s most famous residents: our cows. Winter is “WHITE HOT” because the scenic Green Mountains turned into a snow-covered Mecca for skiers and snowboarders enjoying a day in the powder just an easy drive away. Burlington’s more than 40,000 year-round residents, plus the city’s many visitors, enjoy other wintertime fun with great restaurants, first class entertainment at Flynn Theater, Higher Ground and other spots, sports fans see great hockey and basketball at the University of Vermont, and the year ends (and starts right) with First Night celebration activities all over the city. LEONARDO’S PIZZA LOCAL FOOd Joyce Cellars, The Intervale One reason that Vermont is such a beautiful place to live, work, and play is its thriving agricultural economy. We love our pastures dotted with grazing cows, our blueberry bushes dripping with ripe berries, and our farm-to-table meals. And in many ways, we’re setting an example for the nation, like our state’s pioneering plan to connect our local farmers to our dinner plates. The number of farmers in Vermont is growing and the number of small farms is on the rise too. Furthermore, Vermont’s farmers are a diverse bunch, with an increased number of female farmers, minority farmers, and young farmers (a 22% increase in the past five years). Want to get involved in Vermont's food community, but are wondering where to start? It’s simpler than you think! LEARN:: Read about local food issues in the food sections of local papers and online. Check the websites of your local agricultural nonprofits like the Intervale Center, NOFA Vermont, Rural Vermont, and Shelburne Farms for seminars, workshops, and discussions. Get to know your farmer! 26 | www.VERMONT.ORG TAKE A COOKING CLASS:: from one of the area’s renowned teaching kitchens, like those at City Market, Healthy Living, and or a private class from a local chef. Shop at your farmers’ market. Burlington hosts a yearround farmers’ market, and many neighboring towns offer a variety of summer options. PICK YOUR OWN:: Nothing beats heading out directly to the farm on a warm summer day! Places like Hackett’s Orchard, Allenholm Farm, and Adam’s Apples, just to name a few. For more information and directions, visit a site like http://www.pickyourown.org/VT.htm. CELEBRATE:: Many farms and nonprofits like the Intervale Center and Shelburne Farms offer familyfriendly summer events where you can listen to live music, eat great food, and enjoy quality time with the kids. SHARE A MEAL:: Buy fresh, delicious food from a farmers’ market, produce stand or dine at one of the many restaurants that buy directly from Vermont farmers. Come to the table with friends and family, and celebrate Vermont's bounty! 83 Pearl Street, Burlington 802.862.7700 1160 Williston Road, South Burlington 802.951.9000 leonardosonline.com Leonardo's Pizza celebrates 25 years of awardwinning pies. With a state-of-the-art city-wide fiber optic network, the city has grabbed the attention of national organizations like US Ignite because of its promising combination of tech infrastructure, talented professionals, and renowned educational institutions. US Ignite, an organization that supports the development of next-generation applications, named Burlington one of its 17 Ignite communities in 2013. The recognition just highlighted what residents of the city already knew: Burlington is the home of a new generation of exciting and innovative startups and tech ventures, and BTV Ignite, the city’s partnership with the national organization, is just the tip of the iceberg for technologybased start-ups in Chittenden County. For businesses just starting out, the city and its surrounding communities offer a wealth of opportunities. LaunchVT, an annual business pitch competition run by the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, awards cash prizes and in-kind resources to entrepreneurs who deliver plans for a new business enterprise demonstrating exceptional potential in today’s market. Entering its third year, the competition’s previous winners – Gredio, a software start-up for food companies, and IrisVR, an immersive design and presentation tool – show how mentorship and access to capital and mentorship can positively impact young companies. The financial resources allowed IrisVR to grow its team, and Gredio continues to expand. In 2015, businesses will compete for $30k in cash prizes and $45k in in-kind resources, with a $15k cash prize for the second place winner as well as in-kind resources. Though Burlington maintains a small town feel, the vibrant tech community plays on a national stage. In May 2015, Burlington is partnering with distinguished organizations from around the country to participate in GigHacks, a multi-city hackathon – the first of its kind. Alongside teams in cities from San Francisco to Charlotte, North Carolina, Burlington participants will work for 48 hours on the development of advanced applications to provide real-life problem solving: creating more jobs, improving connectivity, and enabling high-level responsiveness in industries like healthcare and national security. Burlington’s GigHack will be held at the city’s own startup success story, Dealer.com’s award-winning modern industrial facility on Pine Street. The shores of Lake Champlain are certainly an idyllic spot to spend your next vacation, but they’re also the backbone of a thriving tech ecosystem that’s only getting hotter. Experience our diverse culture Tom Torti, President, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce The story of Vermont, the story of the Lake Champlain Region, cannot be told without telling the story of generations of "new Americans" who came here seeking relief from persecution, the freedom to practice their beliefs without harassment and the sense of welcoming that Vermont offers to all who seek comfort in its hills and along its waters. Burlington has acted as the melting pot for Vermont much like New York City has for most of our nation. French-Canadians, Italians, Jews, Poles, Irish and other groups all found their way here and became the leaders of our community. Even today businesses, streets, memorials, statuary, voting roles and the names of political leaders trace their lineage to ancestors who made their way to the numerous ethnic neighborhoods that existed then and today. Each group ultimately became accepted and ingrained into the community with many of these groups aligning today to save a true historical artifact of the old Jewish neighborhoods in the North End: The Lost Shul Mural. During the latter half of the twentieth century, Burlington once again stepped forward to provide refuge and hope for new immigrants looking to start a new life free from fear and oppression. Refugees from Southeast Asia fleeing the ravages of strife following the Vietnam War found Vermont and the Burlington area a place where education, jobs and community support abounded. Likewise did Eastern Europeans, Sudanese Lost Boys, Somalis, Bantus and many other groups. In fact, within Burlington city schools you can hear more than 50 languages and dialects spoken and see youth wearing traditional clothing, practicing social and religious traditions and engaged in school sports and other activities. Vermont has long been considered a place where anyone is welcome to share in the beauty of our landscape and enjoy all that our state has to offer visitors. In fact, Vermont was the first state in the nation to enact civil unions for same sex couples and the first state that chose to extend marriage rights to all couples. Vermont is proud of our inclusive history and we look forward to sharing all that our state has to offer with you.
