Celebrating Canada’s Rich Motorcycle Heritage
“Husqvarna is one of the oldest motorcycle brands in the world.
It has more than 110 years of offroad racing history. 2014
marks the relaunch of the brand in Canada and it was just
natural for the newly formed Husqvarna Motorcycles North
America to sponsor the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
We are all very proud to recognize

Chair Canadian Motorcycle Hall Of Fame
Welcome to the 9th Annual Canadian Motorcycle Hall
of Fame induction ceremony. I trust you are enjoying
the evening.
As you may know the Canadian International
Motorcycle Heritage Museum Foundation, founded in
1999 by Bar and Hedy Hodgson, spawned the presentday Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame, inducting 12
inaugural members, May 6, 2006.
The vision of the Hall of Fame is to preserve and protect
Canadian motorcycle history for the benefit of the
motorcycling community. The Canadian International
Motorcycle Heritage Museum Foundation, now
administered by the Motorcyclists Confederation of
Canada (MCC), is a Registered Charity.
The volunteer board is proud of its new two-stage
nomination and selection process, establishing
openness and transparency in the nomination and
selection process.
In the next year we will be launching two significant
initiatives aimed at promoting the Hall of Fame and
generating ongoing funding sources, critical to the
Hall’s ability to develop and maintain physical exhibits
and memorabilia.
The first is to partner with a number of related museum
ventures in a project called the National Motorcycle
Museum Network Project, aimed at creating a visible
museum and promoting the Canadian Motorcycle
Hall of Fame in various locations across Canada
The second initiative will see Hall supporters offered
Hall of Fame membership packages to increase
awareness about the Hall of Fame and its activities.
Details can be found on our website canmoto.ca.
It is my sincere pleasure to congratulate and welcome
the Class of 2014 to the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of
Fame alumni.
Kind regards,
Mike Harwood

recognizes the significant contribution motorcyclists
make to this community.
And we owe the two wheeled machine that along the
way, managed to capture the imagination of us all.
It is the motorcycle that has ultimately brought us
together tonight, on this fall September evening in
Edmonton.

Chair Edmonton Organizing Committee
2014 CMHOF Induction
The Edmonton 2014 Canadian Motorcycle Hall
of Fame Weekend has been two years in the
making. The Organizing Committee would like to
personally thank all riders, clubs, dealerships
and manufactures for providing the energy
and support to make the Poker Rally, Toy Run,
Vintage Concours and this evening a success.
This weekend we are not only honoring 9 outstanding
legends in our sport, 3 of them from Edmonton,
but celebrating The Canadian Motorcycle Hall of
Fame Weekend. Mayor Don Iveson’s Proclamation
Realize the class of 2014 did not begin riding
motorcycles with the vision of someday being
recognized by their peers for their achievements.
For some, their influence spans a decade - for
others a lifetime of contributions to the betterment
of Canadian motorcycling.
With all journeys it’s not the destination that provides
the memories but the unexpected events along the
way. It is the responses to now historic events that the
Class of 2014 is being honoured for this evening. These
ordinary people produced extraordinary results from
their actions and reactions and in doing so, improved
the Canadian Motorcycling experience for other riders,
in some cases all riders.
So thank you for taking the time to honor your fellow
motorcyclists. Let’s remember that each of us can make
a difference no matter what or when we ride. As riders
we are ambassadors for this exciting and unique sport
wherever our motorcycles take us.
Ride safe.
GREG WILLIAMS
Greg Williams has spent many years traversing both Canada and the U.S., collecting and
documenting vintage motorcycle and automotive events and stories — some of which have
appeared in The Classic Motor Cycle, Walneck’s Classic Cycle Trader, Motorcycle Cruiser,
Canadian Biker, Motorsport Dealer and Trade, and many others including 10 years writing
Western Perspectives with Inside Motorcycles. Currently, he pens the New Old Stock vintage
column for Cycle Canada; feature articles run regularly in American Iron Magazine and
Motorcycle Classics magazine. Pulp Non-Fiction, a column that explores and dissects pieces
of vintage motorcycle literature is featured in the magazine Antique Motorcycle.
Greg has received many awards over the years for his work including for his book, Prairie
Dust, Motorcycles and a Typewriter: The story of Bernie Nicholson and Modern Motorcycle
Mechanics. His love of motorcycles and enthusiasm for researching and discovering the
historical events as well as the people involved continues to fill pages for our enjoyment and
to educate many with our Canadian motorcycling history.
The Bar and Hedy Hodgson Award
This award was created to honour the vision and foresight of Bar & Hedy Hodgson
in creating the Foundation, and the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
It is that vision which is reflected in the mission of the Foundation: “On behalf of the Canadian motorcycling Community, record and
preserve the history and heritage of the motorcycle and motorcycling
activity in Canada; and to recognize, honour and celebrate those who
have achieved excellence and / or made significant contributions to the
well-being and advancement of motorcycling in Canada”.

The Last Hurrah at Westwood, September 15, 1990, the final race before the track closed,
Pete raced to a Vintage 500cc first and a third overall on his Norton Manx. A beautiful
finish to a race career leading back to the opening of Westwood in 1959. CMA sanctioned
the events started the formation of what eventually became the Westwood Motorcycle Club
with Pete as Treasurer. As a founding member Pete went on to become Life Member
in the club.

TURPLE BROTHERS
Glenn and Rex’s father tolerated the boys’ preoccupation with motorcycles assuming it would
be temporary. Their enthusiasm has never waned since Glenn bought his first bike, a used 1926
Harley, in 1946 and realized they could make a few dollars trading them. By 1956 they moved
from thier shop on the farm to an old house on Gaetz Avenue in Red Deer. The brothers poured a
concrete floor in the kitchen so they could use it for the Service Department.
In 1959 Glenn and Rex saw the future in a product from Honda and Turple Bros. obtained the
dealership. The brother’s skills and personalities were a good combination with Glenn running
sales Rex looked after the service department.
Glenn is known as a long distance touring enthusiast, having accumulated over 1.25 million
kilometers aboard a long list of bikes. Rex excelled at motocross, hill climbing and flat track racing
with a home full of championship trophies.
Glenn sums up fifty years in the business best in his own words. “Fairness and honesty have been
important to the growth of Turple Bros., It also helps to have a genuine enthusiasm for the product
you sell.
MANITOBA MOTORCYCLE CLUB
The Manitoba Motorcycle Club is the oldest MC Club in Canada, formed in February 21,
1911, and reported to be the 4th oldest in the world. For over a century the Club has been
promoting the sport of motorcycling in many ways. In the club’s first 60 years it was a
driving force in social outings, endurance touring and racing events in the Manitoba hosting
numerous events on an annual basis. The club even hosted the World TT Championship
in 1914.
The MMC has always brought together people of like minds and from its members
emerged many champions such as Hall of Fame member, Joe Baribeau. In 2010 the MMC
amalgamated with the Antique Motorcycle Club of Manitoba. While retaining its heritage
the MMC now boasts a new crest, over 100 members and a new vision for the next 100 years
of motorcycle riding in Manitoba.
STEEN & MARION HANSEN
Steen & Marion Hansen have been involved with motorcycling in Canada for over 45
years. As national Husqvarna Distributor from 1969 to 1987 the Hansen had a tremendous
impact on the Canadian MX and Enduro racing scene. As Steen Hansen Racing Products
until 2011 they were a major distributor of motorcycle accessory products across Canada
and supporter of many Canadian motocross and Canadian teams competing in Vintage
Motocross des Nations events in US, Sweden, France, Denmark and Germany.
With Marion’s support, in the 1970’s, Steen took part in Old Timers Motocross Racing
and they became involved in starting a chapter of the International Old Timers Motocross
Association in Alberta. In early 1990’s he began Vintage Motocross Racing successfully in the
US with specialty built Gold Stars. At 76, he’s still a regular competitor.

Zoli Berenyi Sr.
A refugee from Hungary, Zoli Berenyi took up scrambling soon after arriving in Canada. Within
two years Zoli was winning in the Expert Class. His race bikes at the time were a Royal Enfield
then a lighter 250 Greeves but by the mid 60’s he had switched to CZ. In 1965 the combination
of the Czech MX bike and Hungarian rider produced a Canadian 250 Expert Championship
and the #1 plate.
He won countless Alberta Championships over the next 3 decades in both Expert and later in
the Over 40 class. In 1985 Zoli was the Canadian National Veteran Champion.
Zoli Sr. was a very successful Master Class rider in the California-Oregon-Washington based
Old Timer MX racing circuit. It is Zoli’s achievements at the World Vet Championships that
set him apart as a true ambassador for Canadian motocross. Zoli’s domination at the World
Vet Championship was only limited by the occasional injury like a scattered leg or ankle. Even
with hands arthritic beyond use he raced on to win 3 over 40, 3 over 50 and 4 over 70 World
Vet Championships. His high pain tolerance was a source of inspiration for his peers young and
old alike.
Zoli Berenyi ‘s dedication to the sport was legendary; racing well into his 70’s he could still could
be seen repairing the track, shovel in hand or watering the track between heats. Zoli passed away
in 2010 and the motorcycle racing community dearly misses him.

STEVE BAKER
Steve Baker began riding the dirt trails around his hometown of Bellingham, Washington
when he was eleven years old. At 16, he began honing his racing skills on the short tracks
and TT dirt tracks of the Pacific Northwest racing up and down the west coast of the United
States and Canada. In short order Steve became the top ranked novice and later Junior TT
rider in the country.
In 1972 Yamaha race director Bob Work had been following Steve’s dirt track success and
offered him a ride sponsored by Canadian Importer Trev Deeley. Steve took to road racing
with a vengeance and by 1973 had won his first Canadian 250 Expert Championship. The
ensuing three race seasons Baker blazed the path of a true Champion producing 9 more
Canadian National plates all on the factory built TZ Yamaha race bikes.
With support from Yamaha and Bob Work as his tuner, Steve had success in his homeland
as well. Considering at the time his competition was the likes of Kenny Roberts, Barry
Sheene, Giacomo Agostini and Johnny Cecotto, Steve recorded a 2nd at Daytona and wins
at Loudon and Laguna Seca. Then in 1977 with wins at Daytona, Spain, Brazil, Austria
and Belgium Steve Baker and the Canadian Yamaha Team secured the Road Racing World
Championship in the Formula 750 Series.
The CMA recognized their efforts with a Bill Webster award for the promotion of Canadian
Motorcycling at an international level.

BOB WORK
“Bo” to his friends, grew up in East Vancouver and by age 19 was already tuning drag cars.
Bo joined the Yamaha team as service manager in 1962 shortly after Trev Deely took over the
distributorship. Natural progression saw Bob move into the racing department and with the
addition of Yvon Duhamel of Montreal in 1967 one of the most successful racing teams in
Canada was formed. From 1967 to 1970 Yvon won over 8 Canadian National Championships
in road racing on Yamahas. During that period they also had two Daytona 250 Wins and 2
podiums in the Daytona 200.
In 1972, Bo offered a ride to a kid from Bellingham, WA who had never road raced before.
By 1976 Bob had tuned Steve Baker’s TZ race bikes to a total of 9 Canadian Road Race
Championships. The International success of Team Baker/Work was also recognized that year
with an Ambassador Award from the Canadian Motorcycle Association. Then in 1977 Steve
Baker with Bo on the wrenches, went on to win the World Formula 750 Championship and
finish second in the Formula 500 series.
During the 1970’s Bob’s race team responsibilities also encompassed all other motorcycle
genres. Bo’s ability to ID talented riders produced many other Provincial and National
Championships from a long list of accomplished riders.
Bob also was involved in building one of motorsports most notorious motorcycles, the TZ750
Flattracker. Kenny Roberts managed 1 legendary Springfield Grand National win after which
he declared, “They don’t pay me enough to ride this thing”!
Bob Work as Yamaha Race Team Manager has been responsible for over 40 Canadian
National Championships, 7 White Trophys, 3 Bill Webster Awards and likely close to 100
Provincial Championships.
