Schneider previously served in this position from 1995-2001. “It is great to welcome back Dave Schneider as our new President & CEO. He brings a deep understanding of our organization and a strong commitment to those we serve,” said Dwight Stratton, Board Chair. “His leadership helped establish growth in services and revenue leading to fiscal stability and financial strength.” Schneider remarked, “I feel privileged to return to The Arc of San Diego and am committed to the long-term success of the organization. I look forward to working with our dedicated board and staff.” For the past nine years, Schneider has served as CEO and General Manager for Community Medical Pharmacy. Inside The Jewels of San Diego Visit us at www.arc-sd.com President’s Message Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that I return to The Arc of San Diego as President & CEO. I met many of you when I previously served in this position from 1995 to 2001. I have enjoyed meeting new colleagues and seeing all the familiar faces of consumers, volunteers, staff, and families who remain dedicated to The Arc. Since my arrival in May, I have visited nearly all programs and facilities and was able to see, firsthand, the incredible work taking place at our organization. I had the opportunity to honor staff and consumers for their contributions at the Annual Meeting and participate in festivities at the Arc San Diego Foundation’s Annual Meeting where our major donors were recognized. In order to best achieve our mission and goals, the Board of Directors recently developed and approved an extensive 2010-2015 Strategic Plan. The scope of the plan’s initiatives is far-reaching and this will be a great tool to help us as we continue to develop and improve our organization. A set of Core Values was also adopted. These principles will guide our efforts towards excellence. I would like to thank everyone for giving me such a warm welcome. I am very pleased to be back at such an extraordinary organization and look forward to working with you. Building on our outstanding record of past performance, in the summer of 2009, our Board of Directors and leadership began the course of planning The Arc of San Diego’s next stage of development. A values-based strategic plan was created incorporating input from board members, chapter advisory board members, staff, and external stakeholders. We believe our core values which define who we are and what we stand for, are fundamental to our success. The work we do everyday touches many lives and our values are a source of strength and guidance in everything we do. We’d like to share The Arc of San Diego’s Core Values with you. We DiD iT! Thank You for Your Generosity! The Arc of San Diego proudly announces the successful completion of its five year Building Toward Self-Sufficiency Capital Campaign. This effort was launched in Summer 2005 when the Board of Directors of the Arc San Diego Foundation decided to raise $3,800,000 to rebuild the former Arrow Center and establish an endowment fund. Setting the stage were Rich and Gaby Sulpizio, who made a $1,000,000 leadership gift that led to renaming the facility, Sulpizio Family Center. The campaign received contributions from over 400 individuals as well as significant public and private institutional gifts. The overwhelming support of families and friends was evident throughout the campaign and we sincerely appreciate their investment in the future of The Arc. The Arc San Diego Foundation, past Chairperson Edward C. Walton accepts an award from David W. Schneider in celebration of the successful conclusion of its $3,000,000 Building Toward Self-Sufficiency Capital Campaign. “It has been heart warming to see the responsiveness of our community, particularly our many longtime friends. Thank you for giving - every gift, both large and small, contributed to the success of this campaign. More importantly, it provides opportunities for our consumers today and into the future,” said Dwight Stratton, Board Chair of The Arc of San Diego. Additionally, The Arc was fortunate to receive a challenge grant of $350,000 from The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan after securing an additional $976,580 in contributions. “The Kresge Foundation challenged us to work together and make this project a reality. Besides reaching out to our closest contributors, we were able to expand our scope and attract new supporters,” said Jim Reynolds, Chairperson of the Arc San Diego Foundation. “Being awarded this grant is recognition of the wonderful work taking place at The Arc of San Diego and will have a significant impact on long-term organizational development,” said David W. Schneider, President & CEO. The total cost for constructing the Sulpizio Family Center was $3,000,000. The campaign was completed $800,000 under original projected costs. The new Center, located at 3030 Market Street, was completed earlier this year and serves as the organization’s new corporate headquarters, assists more than 100 consumers in day programs – and contributes to the revitalization of the neighborhood. The Spotlight is published four times a year. You can find the online version of the newsletter at www.arc-sd.com Our Campers Need Your Help! For the past 46 years, children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities have experienced the joys of summer camp. This year, campers are going to need help getting to camp. Our camp program lost 100% of its state funding, a casualty of widespread cuts by the State of California. As a result, The Arc reduced its camp sessions, from five to two, which means only 80 people instead of 255 will go to camp – and all campers are going to need help getting to camp this year. Each camper has to raise approximately $1,000 to attend an amazing five days at Palomar Mountain School Camp in August. Session dates are August 1- 5 and 9 - 13. We hope you can help... Camp is an amazing experience - all about giving, sharing, compromising. It’s where campers relax, laugh often, build lasting friendships, breathe-in the great outdoors - starry skies, crisp clean air, chirping birds, miles of trees, and learn teamwork, kindness, and honesty. It’s where they can be themselves, accepted for who they are... just the way they are. You can assist in this effort by making a donation to sponsor a camper or help minimize camp expenses. Please make checks payable to The Arc of San Diego and mail it to The Arc of San Diego, 3030 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92102, Attn: Camp Donations. An envelope is included in the center of the newsletter for your convenience. All contributions will be greatly appreciated.
