IT WILL PULL UP SEVERAL WAYS TO ACCESS OUR INFORMATION!! . OR THE FORMAL WAY IS: www.LakeGeorgeIN.com and/or Facebook www.facebook.com/LakeGeorgeCottagersAssociation IMPORTANT THREAT TO STEUBEN COUNTY LAKES WE NEED TO BE HEARD 4,800 HOG FARM On Monday, August 3, 2015, at 6:00 p.m., the Steuben County BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals) will give or not give the final approval to K & D Contract Pork to build a 4,800 hog operation (CAFO) an uncomfortable distance from Lime Lake and Lake Gage. We, as a Lake George group, need to take a stand and let our concerns be noted on this issue. We need to set a precedence that this type of land use is not acceptable close to any lake community. If it could happen to them, it could happen to us! The Lake George Political Action Committee (PAC) has contacted various county officials and voiced its displeasure on a one on one basis. We need a large contingency of Lake George folks at the public meeting to show our displeasure. There will be many people speaking against the proposal from various lake organizations and Lake Councils and we need to back them with our physical support. ATTEND THE STEUBEN BZA MEETING ON MONDAY, AUGUST 3, AT 6:00 HELD IN THE AUDITORIUM IN “STEUBEN COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER” (THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL BLDG) LOCATED TWO BLOCKS SOUTH OF THE ANGOLA CIRCLE. THANK YOU!! Gary Zandstra – Lake George P.A.C. KIND AND GENEROUS LAKE GEORGE SOUL!! Glenn Bickle (his wife too, Chris) have lived on Lake George for a very long time and Duane Topel and Glenn Bickle have always pitched-in to help Lake George sailing groups, Conservancy and the Cottagers Association in many different ways. This time Glenn helped in a different way, he found this adorable train that is named “Lake George” and donated the train to the local “Tri-State Station” located at the Outlet Mall. This is great for Lake George too as on those rainy days at the lake, you can take the kids to look and learn about our past. There are so many different types of scenes, from country to circuses to logging operations etc. A group of men enthusiastic about trains put these displays together which rival any ones!! They can custom build one for you too. You can join Tri-State Station Club by contacting Duane Topel at 419-304-7030 or [email protected]. You may contact him to set up a special tours and history lesson!! The Station is opened from 10 to 4 every Saturday BUT will accommodate special requests for tours during the week. The kids will love this and there is a station that is hands on!! ICCSA NEWS Three races completed with three different winners is indicative of the level of competition in the Inland Cat fleet. Rick Ahaus, Wally Leuenberger, and Jack Stiefel have each won one race, and all three compete in the elite Cup Fleet of the club. The club is holding two special events in July. On Wednesday, July 15, an informal Beer Can Race will start at 6:15 PM followed by a cookout/potluck at the Mahuren home. All mono-hull sailboats are invited to participate. That means Lasers, Sunfish, Flying Scots, Day Sailors, etc. Join the Inland Cat skippers for fun and food. For more information, contact Don Schmidt. The second special event is the 58th Annual Regatta for this sailboat class during the weekend of July 24-26 John Larimore and Norm Bell, the fleet’s co-founders and co-designers of the sailboat, would be very proud that the sailors and their families continue the traditions of serious competition coupled with warm friendships on Lake George. Stan Parrish and Commodore Renate Brenneke are organizing the Regatta which requires the involvement of the entire club. All Inland Cat boat owners are welcome to participate. If you do not receive an invitation and registration form, please contact Stan or Renate. Their contact information is in the LG Directory. DO YOU KNOW WHY WE SPRAY FOR WEEDS?? Let me introduce you to Eurasian Milfoil. For all you new Lake George residents, this weed can stop your boat!! It curls around on the surface water and your prop. These pictures were taken in 2008 while I was boating in the Bayview area. (more pics in the Conservancy Bldg.). This weed can cover a whole lake in a few short years!! Search internet about a MI lake that did not heed the warning and what happened to their economy and their lake!! You will think spraying and paying is worth it!! DONATE TO YOUR WEED FUND!! AS BREEZE EDITOR (Faye Schlatter) I look for stories, pictures, new news etc. but I could use your help. If you have or know of anything that is interesting to share just email: [email protected] A KIND AND GENEROUS LAKE GEORGE SOUL HAS PASSED AWAY. CALLING ALL LG KIDS!! Tom Cordes lived on Caroline Drive and was one of those guys who loved Lake George and showed his appreciation by fishing all summer long to catch “thousands” of LG fish!! Every winter Tom generously served up, free of charge, all the fish he caught to every year-round resident of the Lake. Tom was generous like that!! We will miss that sparkle in his eye and that deep chuckle in his voice! Our condolences to Karla and her family. Good bye Tom, you will certainly Lake George Conservancy and the Lake George Cottagers Association can always use extra help. Look, it is easy work, see PRESIDENT 0f LGC ,Don Parrish, doing a little weeding! WE NEED WEEDERS IF THE FLOWER BEDS ARE TO REMAIN!! Warren was a long-time resident of Lake George. He lived on Lane 201C on the Mill Pond. LG TURTLES The turtles on Lake George have a heck of a time surviving: cars, speed boats AND raccoons!! At the end of Kope Kon, a couple of neighbors took part of their yard to make a nice sandy beach. It also brought in turtles whose nesting areas around the lake have been taken over by seawalls, grass etc making nesting really hard. With that new sandy beach it’s easy for then now and easy for raccoons to find, dig up and eat every last egg!! Hundreds and hundreds of eggs are destroyed! A continual fest like that will certainly make a big decline in our turtle population eventually! Some generous souls like Robert Shirey took on the responsibility to safely dig up and hatch a batch or two. You might call Bob or email to ask him his secret to do if you’d like to help the turtles survive!! Don’t forget the lake George Conservancy trails are there for you to use and enjoy. Many volunteers have cleared and maintained them, so bring the kids and family pets and enjoy a day in the woods, bring a picnic lunch too. You may call Gary Zandstra if you have any questions!! 260-833-3597 BOUTIQUE If you haven’t stopped in the Boutique lately, there are special surprises to buy as gifts for other or for yourself!! We even have the famous Gurgle vase or pitcher are for sale. Come in soon!! It’s Not Too Late to Register for No Child Left Indoors The Lake George Conservancy has been sponsoring No Child Left Indoors for seven summers! This nature study program is for children aged 5 to 12. Teaching children about nature is a fun, effective way to ensure that they will be committed, future stewards of our precious Lake George and its watershed. Please note that registration is required as well as a signed permission slip. Parents can register their child with Linda Weaver, [email protected]. Cell phone: 419-783-1402. Coordinators Liz and Greg Poole shared the plans for this summer’s three sessions: Session #1. Monday, July 6th, 10:00 AM - noon (Conservancy Property). Presentation by SOARIN' HAWK RAPTOR REHAB of Ft. Wayne will include live raptor birds, including an owl, hawk, vulture, falcon, and eagle (if his manners have improved). On June 25, several members of the book group met in Adrian, Michigan, at Governor’s Croswell Tea Room for high tea and a tour of this area known for its Underground Railroad activity during the mid-1800’s. The group had read Underground Angel about the amazing life of Quaker abolitionist, Laura Smith Haviland who lived in Adrian. July’s book is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, a romantic novel featuring an oddly charming, socially challenged genetics professor as he seeks true love. The group will meet at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 23, at the home of Renate Brenneke; Nancy Stiefel is facilitator. The August book is Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini. In September we will read Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland. The group always meets at 10 AM on the fourth Thursday of the month. Session #2. Monday, July 13th, 10:00 AM - noon (Conservancy Property). WILDLIFE presented by Michigan DNR Officer Jordan Richardson and SAFETY AND RULES ON WATER by Officer Page of the Michigan Conservation Department. Session # 3. Monday, July 20th, 10:00 AM - noon (Lake George Retreat lawn). The always popular FISHING session with presentations by Justin Elston, Hunter Arney, and Bob Trammel. Bait is supplied by BIG D'S BAIT AND TACKLE. Please bring your life jacket and a fishing rod if you have one. A rod will be provided if needed. A related craft project is also part of each session. We recommend children bring a water bottle to each session and wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and woods. Please also wear or bring insect repellant. Snacks and additional water are provided at each session. Laser Fleet News The Lake George Laser fleet has completed 3 official races with Kevin Ahaus of Richmond winning all three! The Laser fleet may not include many sailboats, but they have fun! The first three races this summer have been windy and competitive. If weather permits, the fleet holds two races each Sunday afternoon starting at 1:00 PM. Each skipper can count his or her better finish toward the season standings. You can compete in both races or in only one. The skippers take turns setting up the course and calling the starting sequence. And remember that all small, mono-hull sailboats and all age skippers are welcome to compete: Sunfish, Force 5, etc. Questions? Contact Commodore Dan Andrews on Lane 201B. WATCH OUT LAKE GEORGE BOATERS!! Mike McAlear and his wife Gloria are new residents on Lake George. Mike has joined the Steuben County Sheriff's Office and will be patrolling our lake as well as Steuben's other lakes! He has attended the Police Academy of Lucas County as well as Indiana's required Pre - Basic course on law enforcement. The 4th of July Holiday is by far our busiest time of the summer. Make sure you and your guests fully understand the laws pertaining to our waterways; they are in place to keep us safe! We will be writing tickets for violations! 1.) Lake George is a "restricted" lake, 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM high speed boating is permitted, Before and after 10mph maximum, no wake is preferred. Boat travel is "counter clockwise" around the lake. 2.) Jet Skis represent 80% of our accidents in Indiana. You must be at least 15 years of age with a "Boaters Safety Certificate" on board to drive a jet ski. Michigan is very similar, 14 1/2 with a "Boaters Safety Certificate". A 3 person jet ski includes anyone being towed (part of the boat), 3 people max are allowed to be on a 3 person jet ski, this includes small children! Proper life jackets are required on all aboard. 3.)The buoys on Lake George represent the designated swim area, boats traveling in and out of that area should be at no wake and will go directly out (perpendicular) to shore. Fishing boats traveling in that space must use their electric motors unless trolling. Swimmers have the right of way over powered boats. 4.) Please pay special attention when a skier/boarder/tuber falls!! As a driver you should return to the fallen person as quickly and safely as you can. Skiers should hold up their ski, boarders their board and tubers wave their arms. Some boats will carry a bright flag, meaning they have a fallen skier. Other boaters MUST keep a safe distance from fallen skiers and other boats. 5.) Sitting on the side of a boat (gunnel), transom or swim platform while the prop is turning is a safety violation. \ 6.) Pontoons can not have anyone in front of the front rail while the prop is turning. Thanks, Paul Schlatter, Deputy GLENN BICKLE of Lake George and Ft. Wayne, is a retired school teacher who decided one day to compile a list from our Directory, the number of LG residents who lived in other towns. These are the 2012 results of the most popular. Thanks Glenn for putting this together. 79 YEAR OLD RIDES AGAIN!! If you listen closely you might hear the sound of a trumpet blowing in the wind. Someone, some where plays taps on Sunday evening. At least me and my neighbors heard it this last Sunday evening!! Does anyone know who this is?? Or, if the person playing the beautiful melody will come forward and share your story with me I would love to put into our next Breeze!! It is a nice thing to play at sunset and we really appreciated it. Good job who ever you are!! Dick and Dorothy Burrows had a guest, Leo J. Colins of Martinsville, IN who on June 11, decided he wanted to water ski on Lake George!! He did it!! He has never been a resident here so I guess what I’d like to do is challenge all you Lake George guys over 70 to water ski on Lake George!! I will be most happy to go with you for a photo shoot!!! Or send me a good quality photo!! Call Me!! PS Leo is the grandfather of their grandson-in-law, Brenton. LEO J. COLINS
