Introduction to Squirrel Hill
Squirrel Hill is a beautiful, culturally diverse community with
sidewalks, quiet tree-lined streets, and a bustling business
district. It offers ample public transportation and an easy, quick
commute to downtown Pittsburgh. Some of the city’s most
stunning homes, ranging from Victorian to Contemporary, can be
found in Squirrel Hill, which boasts houses designed by
well-known architects. Many students and professors from
nearby universities, including the world-renowned Carnegie
Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh, call Squirrel Hill
home.
National award winning Pittsburgh Allderdice High School, a
Pittsburgh public school in the heart of Squirrel Hill, offers a wide
variety of AP, gifted, scholars, and academic classes meant to
serve the needs of all students. Squirrel Hill is home to St.
Edmunds Academy, a private non-profit K-8. Also close by are
The Ellis School, an independent private 3-12 for girls, and
Winchester Thurston, a private Pre-K to 12 coeducational school.
Love to shop? Squirrel Hill offers luxury goods, including
clothing, fine jewelry, accessories, and a shoe store to which
people travel from miles around, as well as fun boutiques, gift
stores, and resale shops. Love to dine? You won’t go hungry
here, with almost every ethnic cuisine you could imagine or offer
as well as great deli, pizza, coffee shops, an authentic
pastisserie, and even a full-service grocery store right in the
main shopping district. When it’s time to work of all those
treats, there’s a centrally-located fitness center, yoga studio, and
bicycle shops.
Squirrel Hill offers easy access to two of the city’s
gems-Schenley Park and Frick Park, known to may as “Blue Slide
Park” for its steep slide embedded into a hillside that has been
thrilling children for generations. Jog on the serene trails, have a
picnic, and enjoy the playgrounds, all of which are free to the
public.
5529 Raleigh Street
A small quiet street nestled off Wightman Avenue, one block
from Schenley Park, Raleigh Street is the perfect location for
commuting downtown and to area hospitals or Universities.
You can catch the bus at the end of the street, or hop on your
bike and ride to work. You have all the conveniences of city
living with the sound of crickets at night!

The Builder
Michael “Shlomo” Jacobs spent 25 years in Hollywood. He has
produced multi-million dollar feature films and television movies for
21St Century Fox, Disney, Warner Brothers, and NBC Universal,
Lifetime, amongst others.
During the past 6 years, Jacobs has been rebuilding and renovating
many of Squirrel Hill’s decaying apartment buildings and old homes.
Trying to keep pace with the ever growing need for high-end
housing, Jacobs will be building 7 new construction homes during
2015. The new Squirrel Hill demographic, millenials and families
alike, is demanding updated high-end finishes in a safe neighborhood
that is close to downtown, parks, and shopping.

Schenley Park
Visitors to Schenley Park can spend a morning at the
remarkable Phipps Conservatory, enjoy lunch and a concert
at the Schenley Park Café and Visitor Center, relax on
Flagstaff Hill, play a round at the Bob O’Connor Golf Course,
head to the Schenley Oval Sportsplex for ice skating or
summer sports, or take a dip in the swimming pool. And of
course, the trails offer a refreshing and convenient escape
from the city.
Frick Park
Known as Pittsburgh’s woodland park for its extensive trails
throughout steep valleys and wooded slopes, Frick Park is an
ideal escape from the noise of the city. Birding enthusiasts
love to visit Clayton Hill, where well over 100 species of birds
have been recorded. Children flock to the famous Blue Slide
Playground and learn about nature at the Frick Environmental
Center. The park also features red clay tennis courts, baseball
fields, and the only public lawn bowling green in Pennsylvania.
Eating and Shopping
Squirrel Hill’s thriving business district offers an urban feel in a
community of 26,000. Primarily located along Forbes and
Murray Avenues, you won’t be surrounded by chain stores.
Sort through records, try on shoes, visit the library, JCC or
stock up on fair trade handmade artisan crafts.
Work your way through over 50 restaurants and cafés from
Mexican to sushi, vegan to kosher, including the historic
Squirrel Hill Café. You’ll also find scenic spots to enjoy a cup
of tea with your art, a mug of coffee with your book, or a pint
of beer with your friends.
Every Sunday from June through November you can buy local
at the new Squirrel Hill Farmers Market. Enjoy fruit,
vegetables, meats, cheeses, and baked goods fresh from the
farm.
